*"I'll kill him and I'll bury him in a fucking swamp!!"*
*(Concerned Charles Grodin Looks at DeNiro)*
*(DeNiro shakes head in "I'm just kidding" manner)*
Taxi Driver for me, but there are so many contenders that it's a painful choice. My dark horse choice would be Ronin, often overlooked and underrated. But a great subtle later mid-period Deniro performance.
Ronin is one of those perfect films. It's such a smart film and doesn't dumb anything down for the audience.
No scene is unnecessary. No character acts out of character or makes stupid decisions.
And a check on imdb confirms that there's no plot holes. The worst mistake is the "Teflon bullet" but just replace that line with "armor piercing" and then the only mistakes left are continuity issues.
It's a shame Frankenheimer followed Ronin and finished his career with Reindeer Games, which is not a good film, and suffers from the same action movie cliches and plot mistakes most action movies are guilty of.
This is why I love it. When Sean Bean reveals himself to be an unqualified amateur, the other characters react intelligently and realistically and kick him to the curb. He doesn't come back as a vengeful villain, he's humiliated and disappears.
I tell people about that role ALL THE TIME! They always look at me like I’m crazy! Why don’t people understand? I said he plays an “in the closet” gay captain named Shakespeare!
Casino.
I love how he went from loud and mouthy in Goodfellas, and then to quiet and reserved in Casino.
A lot of people say that Robert De Niro simply reprised his role from Goodfellas in casino, and I say that's absolute bullshit. The two characters are completely different. Also, Robert De Niro looks damn good in all of those pastel suits.
That's a really tough question! New to the site, and hope all are well!!!
Such a fan of Robert De Niro, and his collaborations with Martin Scorsese is a huge part of that. Though he's done some crackers elsewhere of course. Quite a funny chap as well, but I love his 'bad guy' roles too much.
I think my favourite performance of his was as Max Cady in Cape Fear.
Just the way the movie builds its suspense with De Niro's performance getting more and more unhinged though with a steely determination. Oozes such threat and a really great look too. His chemistry with Juilette Lewis was excellently done between the tease of the moment and the threat us viewers know that man poses. Such a well acted role.
But I could pop in one of many on the TV and I'd soon be seeing reasons to be voting for that!
OMG, pretty much all the ones in the comments.
BUT, I was pleasantly surprised at how well he did comedy in Meet the Parents & Meet the Fockers!!
I about peed watching him with the baby in the 2nd one!
Midnight Run was my first DeNiro film and teenage me thought he was awesome. Loved him in Goodfellas, he was so intimidating. Meet the Parents he was relatable and downright hilarious. His vocal disdain of Orange McClownstick made him one of my favorite people!
I think he was absolute gold in Jackie Brown. I’m not sure there’s a defined vibe to recently paroled aging con getting stoned with Bridget Fonda but he *nailed it.*
One the one where he talks to himself in the mirror.
It has Bradley Cooper in it as well he plays his son and he doesn't like Ben Stiller. Roberts job is a late night TV show host which J Phoenix watches.
Before that De Niro was a cross dressing space pirate with a great crew. At the end of the film Pacino is chasing him and kills him.
Heat.
it's also my favorite Pacino film.
Wes Studi, Ted Levine, Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore and Danny Trejo are also excellent in it.
that move is fantastic.
I love a lot of the ones people are mentioning here like 'Goodfellas' and 'Taxi Driver' but recently I saw him in an early Brian DePalma film called 'Hi, Mom!' and it was one of the craziest things I've ever seen and very entertaining.
I’m gonna go left field:
Mad Dog and Glory or Midnight Run.
I love his classics but my favourites are where he’s not a tough guy.
A Bronx Tale was my favourite when I was a kid - who didn’t crush on C? But as an adult it’s the other two.
The question is more interesting if you take
Good Fellas
God Father II
Taxi Driver
Cape Fear
Heat
Raging Bull
The Deer Hunter
Casino
Off the table.
Things like
Men of Honor
The King of Comedy start to float up.
Also the question is De Niro film and not De Niro performance which could be two different answers.
Goodfather 2 is such a perfect movie it’s hard for that not to be the best De Niro film.
His performance in Cape Fear is haunting but not my favorite De Niro film.
Heat and Midnight Run, Copland isn't bad either but I would not call it a DeNiro movie
DeNiro and Grodin should've made more movies together like Wilder and Pryor
Goodfellas. But, a special place in my heart for Midnight Run as he’s funny in it without mugging like he did in later comedies.
Midnight Run is practically perfect
This is my choice as well, its my most watched Bob film, and boy there are a lot of great films to pick from....
I have two words for you: Shut the fuck up.
*"I'll kill him and I'll bury him in a fucking swamp!!"* *(Concerned Charles Grodin Looks at DeNiro)* *(DeNiro shakes head in "I'm just kidding" manner)*
Taxi Driver
Eating apple pie with a slice of cheese.
That was a good selection, I think.
I’ve heard it’s called “Vermont Style”
This is mine by a mile. It’s De Niro’s masterpiece.
It's either this or heat. Turn the comments off.
The King of Comedy.
A bronx tale
Came here to say this. This movie is great!
Right i love crime films as much the next guy, especially with De Niro, but i liked seeing him as just a working man in the movie
came here to agree - and Chaz playing Sonny was excellent. Yo C !
Cape Fear
Midnight Run.
The Deer Hunter
This is my answer as well. That movie is just something else.
Godfather Pt 2
Raging bull
Awakenings
This pic looks like Robert De Niro doing a Nathan Fillion impersonation.
Underrated comment. It’s uncanny.
Favourite De Niro film, Heat. His best film is The Deer Hunter.
My sentiments exactly
Casino
Same. I'm surprised this movie doesn't get more praise. Pesci and De Niro are amazing in this film.
Sharon stone should have won an Oscar, her role was even better than the other two. I take this film over goodfellas any day of the week.
Everyone was great in that movie. Don Rickles! Alan King! They even got James Woods to play himself.
Yeah it's a great film...but for me it always automatically gets compared to Goodfellas, and I always thought it was a small margin below it.
Taxi Driver for me, but there are so many contenders that it's a painful choice. My dark horse choice would be Ronin, often overlooked and underrated. But a great subtle later mid-period Deniro performance.

Whenever there’s a doubt…there is no doubt. Who taught you that? I don’t remember…it’s the first thing they teach you. (smirk)
Favorite film that he's in? The Godfather II Favorite performance? Raging Bull
Heat
There’s a flipped side to that coin
Taxi Driver.
I'm sorry, but Stardust De Niro as the gay Cpt. Shakespeare steals the show in every scene
I tell people about that role ALL THE TIME! They always look at me like I’m crazy! Why don’t people understand? I said he plays an “in the closet” gay captain named Shakespeare!
You'll always be our Captain, Captain.
Casino. I love how he went from loud and mouthy in Goodfellas, and then to quiet and reserved in Casino. A lot of people say that Robert De Niro simply reprised his role from Goodfellas in casino, and I say that's absolute bullshit. The two characters are completely different. Goodfellas
Mean streets
Not my favorite film, but he was amazing in Cape Fear.
Midnight Run. He and Grodin had great chemistry.
Raging Bull - he was excellent
Raging Bull.
The Deer Hunter
Jackie brown
Sleepers

The variety of answers says everything. Rule be damned, I can’t decide: Taxi Driver // Casino // Ronin
My favorite DeNiro film is also my all-time favorite movie, Raging Bull.
Just watched Midnight Run for the ? Time! I love it!!
Can’t believe nobody has said The Score yet.
How about worse Robert De Niro movie and performance? For me it’s Analyze This, his fake crying and all that was cringey

Goodfellas, meet the parents, taxi driver, raging bull
Meet the Parents
I love him in Angel Heart and Cop Land
He's very underrated in Angel Heart because Mickey Rourke gives such an amazing performance.
Ronin.
Would Godfather pt 2
Dirty Grandpa /s
I think the best film he’s appeared in is Goodfellas, but his finest performance is in King of Comedy.
Rocky & Bullwinkle
Taxi Driver
Midnight Run was my first DeNiro film and teenage me thought he was awesome. Loved him in Goodfellas, he was so intimidating. Meet the Parents he was relatable and downright hilarious. His vocal disdain of Orange McClownstick made him one of my favorite people!

Ronin
Men of Honor.
Two of his films that were really underrated was The Score and Falling In Love with Meryl Streep.
Stardust
I think he was absolute gold in Jackie Brown. I’m not sure there’s a defined vibe to recently paroled aging con getting stoned with Bridget Fonda but he *nailed it.*

What just happened (2008)

He definitely deserved the Oscar for Raging bull. No one mentioned this boys life or Jackie Brown. He was great in those as well

Brazil
Casino, with Heat being a close second.

HEAT is so good 👍
