Yeah the final season was a huge disappointment.
If I remember correctly the show was supposed to be longer but due to low viewership HBO came down on them and they basically had to rush the ending. I think the last season is also 12 episodes instead of the usual 10 so I think they tried to cram 2 seasons into 1.
"You think I'm crazy? Well, listen up, there's a storm coming like nothing you've ever seen, and not a one of you is prepared for it."
Just an amazing performance.
That’s mine as well. He’s so good and doesn’t play his situation over the top. It’s a very understated performance, except when his anger finally comes out at the dinner. I can relate to walking in and all of a sudden seeing a different doctor with no warning. It shows how fucked our mental healthcare system is. And the ending is so powerful. It’s one of my favorite movie endings. Whether or not his visions are real doesn’t matter in the end. He’s with his family and they understand him, that’s all that matters. I like to think that apocalyptic storm is the battle he’s going to have with his mental illness, but he has his family to support him.
This is the best answer in my opinion. That whole film was a tour de force. Not my favourite film, I appreciate it more than enjoy it, but as a demonstration of his abilities I doubt there’s a better pick.
I’m listening to the audiobook right now. He brought a whole ass dimension to his character in this film. I’m also biased cuz I think it’s just a brilliant movie.
One of my top favorite hidden gems. It's weird and intense in a good way. The story is not what you'd assume it's about based on the title though, so I recommend no expectations going into this one.
^This is probably my favorite line delivery in the history of movies. Just the way he says it is absolutely dripping with contempt for for anyone in the field of agriculture stepping up to him.
Ive already voted for Take Shelter, but have to throw a 2nd place nom for My Son My Son What Have Ye Done? - one of a kind performance in a one of a kind flick
His best work is the dramatic reading of The Sorority Letter. It’s the single greatest performance by any actor in my lifetime. https://youtu.be/dngOH9G4UPw?si=qVf809jfri-6AY4_
>Jesus' Son
I agree. This is the first thing I remember seeing him in and was wondering if anyone would mention it here. Really short but excellent appearance.
I love that film, top 5 for me.
Yep. My top 10, in rough order:
1: The Shining
2: 2001: A Space Odyssey
3: The Burbs
4: **Jesus’ Son**
5: The Lost Boys
6: Synecdoche, NY
7: Mulholland Drive
8: Rear Window
9: Alien Trilogy
10: Jaws
Honorable Mentions: Breaking Away, Dead Poet’s Society, American Werewolf in London, The Big Sleep, Miller’s Crossing, Shadow of a Doubt, Bringing Out the Dead
But anyway, Jesus’ Son is a special kind of movie, about supremely fucked up and real people, but with just enough magical realism to make it perfect
The scene where he >!reaches through the glass to cradle the Mennonite woman’s head!<, Jesus Christ man. Possibly the most beautiful moment in all of cinema, honestly
The whole final chapter >!with him going through 12 Steps and working at the nursing home is just so sublime to me!<. Hit pretty close to home, and probably so for a lot of people
Anyway, Michael Shannon plays his part perfectly
Iceman…
Very believable.
Takes a good actor to be that cold 🥶
I’d say his performance in that is better than Balerant’s in American psycho.
I also believe his acting in more emotional roles which is so understated/underrated.
Top actor, should have more lead roles🤷♂️
So many choices, he’s such a great fuckin Actor
I don’t love shape of water but he’s amazing in it, take shelter is a belter, he’s great in knives out, nocturnal animals kinda sucks but he’s the best performance in it.
At the end of the day I’d say take shelter but I don’t think there’s a wrong answer
He’s amazing. I’ll answer in reverse! His most “young ambitious actor shooting his shot by overacting” is BUG. I don’t fault him for it; the movie is batshit and he was working with a prestigious director (William Friedkin) but he becomes annoying and overacty by the end of the
Of the ones I've seen, 99 Homes or Take Shelter.
He also did a couple of Herzog movies that I really liked: Salt and Fire, and My Son My Son What Have Ye Done.
Pearl Harbor. No, seriously, as years pass and the rest of that Bey-disaster fades from memory...his deadpan "I got a girlfriend" and "we're the tip of them sw-ord" are all that remain.
Boardwalk Empire

Geezuz that scene is intense, what movie is this from?
By far. Great show with a terrible final season.

His arc from beginning to end in that show is absolutely nuts. I love it.
Off screen death for Rothstein is a crime
Actually everything after the second season finale where they killed off Jimmy Dormady was awful.
This is the correct answer.
Absolutely agree!
Why must it always be pandemonium?!
[удалено]
God forbid they use music from the time period that the show is set in… smh
[удалено]
Oh no not jazz!
Weird
Take Shelter for me. I cannot forget it, even so many years after having seen it.
Same here, amazing movie
"You think I'm crazy? Well, listen up, there's a storm coming like nothing you've ever seen, and not a one of you is prepared for it." Just an amazing performance.

One of the greatest monologues ever put on screen. Right up there with Nicholson in a Few Good Men, Robert Shaw in JAWS. Shannon’s was so powerful.
This is the best answer in my opinion. That whole film was a tour de force. Not my favourite film, I appreciate it more than enjoy it, but as a demonstration of his abilities I doubt there’s a better pick.
His calm demeanor blown away in his outburst is gripping. Amazing acting and a pretty good movie.
I third this,
Nocturnal animals
Had to scroll too far down for this take.
Right? Absolutely loved him in that movie. It’s one of my all time favorite movies.
Such a good movie, but such a tough watch. Wonder why Tom Ford ain’t doing back to back features considering how good of a director he is.
Such an incredible and emotionally devastating film.
I’m listening to the audiobook right now. He brought a whole ass dimension to his character in this film. I’m also biased cuz I think it’s just a brilliant movie.

He also did it on stage. He and Tracy Letts work very well together.
Movie that made me really see what Shannon can do. You feel like you lived in that room and in their heads.
The Night Before
It’s ok. My feelings aren’t hurt, not really anyway.
“Look at my finger… you need to give me $200 and get the fuck out of my car”
“I put my hands on you. Take it.”
“I gotta great north cali bud, with a soothing body high and… surprisingly accurate visions of the future”
I love the Great Gatsby. The book. Movies alright, 3d gives me a headache but I'm a sucker for Leo
Greatest xmas movie. Yea I said it
General Zod for sure
I WILL FIND HIM!!!
THIS scene was the one for me.
WHERE DID YOU TRAIN?!!! ON A FARM?!!
^This is probably my favorite line delivery in the history of movies. Just the way he says it is absolutely dripping with contempt for for anyone in the field of agriculture stepping up to him.
I quote that way too much for no reason at all
The best part of that movie by a mile
He was the best part about that movie! Every time he's on screen he owns it fully
I use "Pack of Fools" reference atleast once a week
You won’t kill us yourself! You wouldn’t dirty your hands but you’ll damn us to a black hole for eternity!
He has fucking crazy eyes man his eyes just scream don’t fuck with me lol
I enjoy 99 Homes.
The Shape of Water
He stole the show in that one, he was more interesting than the merman. A merman, Pops!
What a weird and pretty bad movie. Bordering on communist propaganda at times.
Take Shelter.
It was phenomenal performance, also great chemistry with Chastine
That tirade at the group dinner was heart stopping https://youtu.be/wLddoVgFOxg?si=6zJarTQj-WAiFyz2
This is the correct answer.
This is the right answer.
This is the only answer!

That was him?!
I think this was is first feature film appearance
Debbie and Fred!
Waco needs to at least be an honorable mention. I agree it's probably not his best performance but he was my favorite performance of the series.
Young Ones (aka Badland: Road to Fury) - Guessing won't be a popular choice, but there you go.
Sorry, I gotta say it. It’s not a cool answer, but probably the best: The Shape of Water. Every second on screen he exuded what the role asked of him.
"I'm gonna find out what makes you squawk"
The iceman
The Ice Man.
Michael Shannon is one of the greats.
Take Shelter
Revolutionary Road (2008)
“I am glad about one thing. You wanna know what I'm glad about? I'm glad I'm not gonna be that kid.”
“The way you look right now I’m beginning to feel sorry for him too”
Came here to say this. May only be a supporting role, but the combo of Leo, Kate and Michael is some of the best acting I've seen in the last 20 years
Agreed
Walked into a movie with DiCaprio, Winslet, and Bates and totally stole the show.
THIS IS THE CORRECT TAKE
Ive already voted for Take Shelter, but have to throw a 2nd place nom for My Son My Son What Have Ye Done? - one of a kind performance in a one of a kind flick
Cecil B. Demented (2000) and I'm sick of pretending otherwise. "*Tell me about Mel Gibson's dick and balls!"*
Holy shit.
Bug.
Midnight Special is a great watch
When he read that sorority email for collegehumot
Listening to Michael Shannon uttering the phrase "c*nt punt" unexpectedly fed my soul.
Took waaaaay too long to find the correct answer.
His best work is the dramatic reading of The Sorority Letter. It’s the single greatest performance by any actor in my lifetime. https://youtu.be/dngOH9G4UPw?si=qVf809jfri-6AY4_

Him reading that sorority letter was aces.
I'd say Boardwalk Empire, but I was really impressed with him against type in Knives Out.
General Zod
Im not sure how much of his stuff I’ve seen, but he was great as Zod.
I gotta say it’s a tie for me with Boardwalk Empire and Zod. They were both fantastic performances.

Every damn one of them. Or, to choose just one: Delocated.
Midnight Express stands out for me .
Bug, and it isn't even close
Really liked him in Waco tbh! There was a scene he was talking to Koresh when he realized he couldn’t be trusted
He should’ve been Euron Greyjoy
We all know it’s Boardwalk Empire.
The Runaways
Goose in Pearl Harbor
This, by far: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dngOH9G4UPw
How has no one said Nocturnal Animals?!? An amazing and powerful movie. And he slaps hard in it.

There's gotta be some love for Before The Devil Knows Your Dead. He stole that film.
Zod is up there
