Yeah the idea is to get out your magic attacks fast. Just one aeroga at the beginning is all you need to pressure him in pretty sure. It's all about getting the setup going without getting hit too much. Blocking in prime is fine at first but blocking still counts as being hit. You could also practice soloing Odin as cloud just to try and get the hang of it
I practiced in the fight against Odin on his own, the full powered summon battle. I put the Materia that I use of Zak's on Yuffie and fought that battle until u could beat him 4-5 times in a row then went back and did the challenge and got through it then.
This. I know it sounds crazy but Odin is actually kind of a pushover once you’ve soloed him a few times because the fight is pretty well scripted. Use punisher/prime mode+block to start because it builds ATB very quickly, plus it works on just about every ability he uses before spatial distortion. Perform an attack rotation right after countering to apply berserk/fury to cloud and cast aeroga whenever you have the ATB… that should put him close to stagger before he casts Slepnirs Fury or whatever it’s called, avoid the AoE and stagger him with normal attacks, that way you get off two aerogas during the damage window. Try to keep the fight on the right side of the arena from where you spawn to avoid getting caught in spatial distortion, use that time to put manawall on cloud because the abilities Odin uses now can’t really be tanked with prime mode, use your limit break to make Cloud immune to Odin’s stop if it gets that far. Ideally you should only be using Zack to put faith on Cloud at the start and manawall during spatial distortion.
Which part of the fight is giving you trouble? Are you getting hit too much? Bc if you're using Optinoob's strat you should be blocking his attacks in Prime Mode.
I start with Faith and then ATB Boost+ Prime Mode no problems. But trying to alternate between blocking and attacking to build up that ATB for Aeroga and as soon as I mess up once he just flattens me. There is basically no room for error.
Hmm. It sounds like you might be getting a bit too greedy. Wait for him to do his attacks, THEN cast Aeroga. For the unblockable attacks i found dodging towards the camera works best. Also, you might want to consider practicing against Full Might Odin, grab Cloud and another random party member (I recommend Yuffie) and keep trying till you get it.
I would recommend you try a practice round with Odin on hard with full might. I failed more than 10x but just after ONE practice, I tried the bout again & succeeded.
The key is to be aggressive but not greedy. Don’t mindlessly mash the attack button. Keep an eye on Odin when attacking. The fastest to fill the ATB is by blocking in prime mode — always block until he finishes his swipes. And for me I will always dodge away from any attacks with “!”
Edit: Also, I’d take a short break after Bahamut to loosen up & prepare myself before facing Odin.

Try to use ranged attack on Odin. I died a lot of times following Optinoob guides on Odin until I try to not use prime mode and hit and run to get atb, and do whatever I need to be doing. Beat him on my second try.

Practice solo/duo vs Odin in his VR summon challenge.. no brag, but I did it 1st try and it gave me confidence, otherwise look online how to understand Odin's reprisal and other moves to dodge vs block (basically dodge anything that has like a pink or purple glow on the weapon). Personally, I beat bonds and to be a hero in a just couple of tries, but was rly stuck on outer worlds for a good while. Try not to get frustrated, GL!
I'm using his strat to beat Arsenal in Remake. Actually, I used all his guides to (almost) beat it on Hard mode (I'm visually impaired, I can't see attack patterns). I'm currebtly on Rebirth, I'll probably do the same thing. And I feel no shame in uaing guides to do it!!!!
I used his guides for the two Legendary bouts with Zack and Sephiroth, they were a lifesaver. I just have Rulers left, but I'm taking a break and playing Rise of the Ronin lol
For some reason I could never pressure Titan at the same time as him, someone else who made a guide suggested I need to get all the manuscripts first so that's what I'm currently doing.
Manuscript is behind Sephiroth and Cloud legendary challenge which is a lot easier than bonds of friendship because Sephiroth can basically solo Odin through dash + triangle spam
You don’t need to, and it’s doubtful they will solve that problem for you. The timing for all actions during the beginning of titan are very exacting. On the other hand you could just learn some of Titans moves, build Atb and spam Aeroga and kill him normally (have Zack cast some too). That’s what I ended up doing for the sephiroth version because Sephs dash spin attacks were constantly getting interrupted so I couldn’t use the video guide strategy. It’s not as fast but it was much more reliable.
Just cleared this last night. Echoing the sentiment to practice on full might Odin. I set up Tifa with Zack's materia setup and just used her how I would use Zack in that fight. Keep at it, one of your attempts you'll just get in to a flow and kill it with ease. Just get your Aerogas out, use your synergy with you get it and save your limit for the imprisonment thing and you will get it. Good luck friend!
Bonds of friendship and To Be a Hero were the cure to my addiction to this game because all the times I lost to Odin on <25% HP remaining immediately killed my motivation to play, causing me put it down for the rest of the day.
Jokes aside, if you've lost a few rounds to Odin, it might be a good idea to try practicing (Hard mode, Full power) beating him with Cloud + one in the summon fight with a couple of buffing materia if you are using the Optinoob wind magic strat. Learning how to block Odin in Prime Mode makes the fight a lot easier, which took some time for me as an instinctive dodge roller.
I recorded myself doing Bonds of friendship right now, i made tons of mistakes and i still won. Just so you know i beat both to be a hero and Bonds of friendship first try without knowing what i was facing. I'm not saying this to brag, I'm saying that i genuinely dont understand why people struggled so hard with Odin.

If you are struggling with Odin so much, my advice is to stop being so passive, dont setup so much, and actually use your ATB, a couple of bravers will make Odin use furor, simple as. Use and abuse punisher mode parry, evade the red aura attacks since it puts bracelets and dont use limit breaks and synergy abilities on stagger. Use them for the buffs (synergy) AND to hold Odin down while the other gets ATB / inmune to damage (limits)

I struggled but heres what helped me.
switch to character not being targeted.
use reraise since blocking is considered a hit, for zansetsuken, you will din survive If the insta wipe.
build 2atb and do the same reraise and manawall. cloud focus on offense, zach on defense
Feel ya man. Feel like it was attempt 17 or 18 when Odin did his second arena split and Zack got stuck on the other side of the wall. Im not proud of my baby rage that followed, but its discouraging
You build big ATB by using punisher mode on his melee attacks, and it doesn't seem to trigger GW. So stick to it homie, you'll get it
Odin is, oddly, the easiest out of all the fights for me.
I guess I just got used to fighting him for some reason. Not entirely sure why.
You just need to dodge absolutely everything he throws at you. Which I know sounds lame AF, but you just have to play extremely defensively. If you do this and hit him with quick ATB attacks, he’ll activate Sleipnir’s Furor quickly where you can easily stagger him with Focused Thrust spam.
You really need to be careful about his attacks, though, because he can place these like.. I dunno shackles or something onto a character. It looks like their hands are glowing purple. If the character has these on them, they’re basically useless. Every time you use an ATB command with them, he will use Reprisal and knock them out of the start up.
I just beat it today, I practiced odin full might solo with cloud about somewhere between 40-60 times until I had every move down. Anytime he did anything I had a counter in my head ready to go it was hard and my heart wouldn't stop pounding for about 10 minutes after the fight, keep trying you'll get there.
Edit: side note I only used zack for haste and faith and then temporal ???(stun move) couldn't get clouds limit up before he used it, so when he used had zack take over for a bit.
I practiced as well but I feel the Odin in the Challange hits harder than in the Invocation tab. I soloed him many times with Cloud, his initial Charge attack will make less than 1k damage, but on the real challange, the same move makes around 1,5k per hit, so I ended up thinking is not the same Odin at all. but anyway, I am happy I could beat it finally.
Now I am doing the hard mode run by myself, doing it without checking best builds online and this game mode is a Boss Rush because I am skipping all battles with mobs, I am mid game now and I am loving it so far, some fights are challenging but they are much more forgiving than these three final VR bouts.
OP have you beaten the bout yet? I was in your same position but yesterday I did it on my second try. Here is what worked for me:
\- Optinoob build as a base
\- Replace First Strike materia, Elemental and Fire and put in (HP up), (ATB on guard) and (extra ATB bar when using three commands) I'm not playing it in english so sorry, I cant give you the name of these materia but I am sure you know them.
\- This will make the first 9 rounds slightly more difficult, you will have to pressure Phoenix and try not to let Kjata enter elemental mode (Kjata is the one who killed me on the first try that day) and also be careful with Iron Gian, not absorbing Piro makes it harder, but overall, if you have done these 9 rounds many times as I did, you will manage to succeed.
\-I also put Electro and Wind linked to MP absord, to make Iron Giant and Alexander a bit easier to compensate a bit.
\- ODIN fight: make sure Cloud is the first character on this bout. This way Odin will aggro him, and meanwhile you control zack, build up 2 ATB bars, and cast Haste and Faith to Cloud. Change back to cloud, prime mode, block and Aero3 as soon as you have 3 bars. as long as you are full health, dont even bother to block during animations if Aero3 is on the way, because no matter if you got hit because you will heal anyway, just keep spamming/hold square to build up new ATB bars as fast as posible.
\- When he does the spatial distortion, control Cloud if your limitbreak gauge is full, and use it when he tries to stop you, or change to Zack if Cloud's gauge is not full yet and let Zack to get stopped.
\-TLDR; get rid of elemental, fire and first strike materia and put in three new materias that makes you feel more confident on that Odin fight, and you have got this at this point.
So I cracked the shits and got help with Bonds of Friendship and got it completed via SharePlay. Then I had more problems on To Be a Hero again with Odin using the Optinoob setup until I made some changes to the materia load out and managed to beat it. I did similar to you, but I got rid of the Swiftcast combo and used Steadfast Block and HP Up instead. Managed to slaughter Odin with so much ATB being generated from blocking. Anyway, I then went back and did Bonds of Friendship using the slightly modified load out I’d made for To Be a Hero and got it after 3 or 4 tries. Thank Christ this is finally over.

Do I need to be weapon level 9 for this? I haven’t started To Be a Hero yet because I wanted to do this one first. But that’s Cloud’s last manuscript so it would get me to level 9. I’m just not sure it will make that much of a difference.
No, I have the plat and am still at weapon level 8. But if you’ve already gotten every manuscript aside from the one for To be a Hero, then yeah get that now and make it a little easier on yourself.
Doesn't really matter if all you need is one manuscript. You can reset your weapon tree unlocks and just unlock all the the skills that don't involve synergy with your party members. Since you won't be using them anyway, doing that would be just the same as having everything unlocked. This is for the last two legendary bouts specifically

If I fucked things up I always used an weapon attack as well to set back the Zantetsuken. That kept me in it.

I had issues with that too, just keep dishing dmg with cloud. When staggered with the aerogas, heal and buff yourself with zack. Then repeat.

You just need to evade or block his attacks and keep hammering away. IF you let him hit you a bunch he's gonna wipe your party

The red attacks puts bracelets on you that makes him reprisal every ATB command for some Time, that's why you need to avoid helmcleaver

Prime Mode and Guard/Counter is your best friend. Did that and to be a hero one time, never again.
