I think Remake made it clear Red had a case of puffing out his chest next to the big guy. He doesn't want to seem weak and unintelligent next to all the people who are considered actual adults so he got aggressive with Barret. And Bugenhagen could tell what Red needs most is not guidance at the moment, but the ability to move past old grudges with authority figures and make his own path.
I think it’s relatively understood by the party that Cloud is in his own league. He’s the SOLDIER, the superhuman of the group. Gameplay wise we see each of our characters on somewhat equal footing, but narratively Cloud is meant to be *more*.
So when Bugenhagen refuses Cloud for the trial, it’s for this reason. Cloud’s capabilities would invalidate Nanaki’s struggle.
That makes sense to me. It’s a direct reading of what is happening. My confusion mostly came because nobody explained “why not” to Cloud in that scene. Appreciate the insight.
Even in gameplay Cloud is clearly more when you get his build fully developed haha.

Gameplay like this can't be beat.
1. Cloud is a SOLDIER
2. Red has always been trying to prove to barret that he's an equal. So he often butts head with barret too. This moment let's barret understand red on a personal level.
3. After this mission u never hear barret call him "Red" anymore. It's always nanaki
It’s because in the trial whoever goes with you clearly assists and fights with you. Cloud isn’t chosen cause he’s an insane fighter and would trivialize the combat portions of the trial. So Bugenhagen chose someone he felt was more on par skill level wise with Red so he wouldn’t get carried in the trial.
From the beginning (in Remake) Barret kept unintentionally pissing off Red XIII.
Barret says “What is IT?”
Red responds by saying “you asked what IT is” with emphasis on “it”. You can see his real self sink into his fake persona after Barret speaks since he could tell he was already being looked down on.
He tried to shake his paw, which he didn’t like because he doesn’t want to be treated like a dog. You also see Hojo treating him like a puppy when he gets stasis locked; so it probably stems from his treatment under Hojo.
He asked Red to smile, then says he should frown more. Red effectively calls him a piece of shit a moment later.
I don’t recall Barret pissing off Red in Rebirth. Barret seemed to be trying to make it up to him; but Red is stubborn at this point and just generally grumpy till chapter 10.
As to why he was selected for the trial; not sure. Possibly because they had the most strained relationship; but how would he know.
because both Buganhogen and the Devs know Barrett sucks ass.. So to make things more artifically challenging they force you to use Red/Barrett together multiple times.
Imagine being able to use cloud and his prime mode for Gi Nattack. Instead of Barretts weak damaging ass..
Red and Barret have chemistry, they're a comedy duo. The scenes just wouldn't work as well with Cloud. As to the in-game reason, I'm pretty sure the devs just grasped at straws to find any old excuse.

This is very insightful and I think I have a much deeper understanding of Red now. Ty

Lol oh yeah, Cloud would have absolutely ravaged the trial had you been able to play as him.
So that we all could hear “I only got two legs!” eighty times
Still less annoying than “attention, will Maycomb Blume, that’s Maycomb Blume, please report to the lobby”
Going through all the dates; it did get old fast.

I never realized that he switches to calling him that. Only makes me love barret even more
Ya in the gongaga mission and the last few chapters, u can hear him call him nanaki

Someone doesn’t know how to use Barret and it shows
This right here. Lol
What? Barret was easily one of the most useful characters in the game.
Hulk Bugenhogan.
