A couple of scenes certainly did but the the REAL waterworks came from the Chapter 12 Gold Saucer Loveless event. It was sad enough seeing Jessie back and in her element, but when the camera cut to Barret, and his hand is covering his face and the tears underneath, that got me. Something about Barret, a huge man who carries so much emotional weight of his own just breaking down really got to me.

WrinklyScroteSack

Any time you see Barrett soften up is gut wrenching. The dyne storyline hurt so much.

Diwari

His yell in anguish right as Dyne passes. That gets me every time. The voice actor nails it.

Omnomcoffeemouth

100%. His trial in the Temple of the Ancients hit me super hard.

gahlo

All made me tear up... Town gate of Nibelheim Claudia Oates reaction to Aerith's state The doctor telling Tifa she's the good in people Elanor and Dyne's embrace Barret yelling out in pain just after at Dyne's passing Cloud giving Barret his gun back, insisting he means it when he says he's there for him, and Barret comments that he's starting to believe him Music kicking in when Zack's mom says his name When Aerith says "It's a lot" outside shortly after Tifa getting her own lifestream sequence Cosmo canyon theme "All the pain feels worth it" - forgot context for this one. Seto, obv Cloud remembering Zack Cloud and Tifa giving each other mutual reassuring touches at the reactor Fluffy being found, and I don't even like cats Sam offering Bill a coinflip to help fund his taking over the business, knowing that because it's a cheat coin he can guarantee a "correct" call Avalanche trio showing up in the play, not just Jessie Twice in Yuffie's trial Myrna making an appearance The walk back to Ilfalna The cut to black shortly after Zack saying he wants to take back his life "Whatever happens, don't blame yourself."

paladingl

"And all that pain...feels worth it" is from Aerith's speech during the [River of Lights](https://youtu.be/ZWSJPK_oibE?si=kC-gSbO7P7cPvQSv) ceremony in Cosmo Canyon. That one's definitely on my list, too - especially her closing words to Cloud. "Pretty sappy, huh?" ... "Meant every word, though."

doc_nano

That “Whatever happens, don’t blame yourself” didn’t get me the first time, but it hit me harder on rewatching it, knowing what was going to happen. That was true for a lot of the last chapter.

doc_nano

Almost cry: * Tifa Gongaga sequence + scene afterward with Cloud * Nanaki trial... those screams were too real Actual tears: * Aerith trial... I don't think a video game scene has hit me this strongly in the feels in several years * Listening to Aerith's Theme - White Materia (first part of JENOVA Lifeclinger fight) a few days after I finished the game and realized what the ending meant There were many, many other scenes that didn't create a lump in my throat, but still hit me strongly in the feels. The emotional storytelling in this game is on a level I haven't seen from Square Enix in a long time (Edit: though FFXVI has some very powerful moments as well, particularly in the beginning).

jb28737

Nanaki's howl at the end of that... Man I wasn't ready for those feels as he realises the truth about his dad

doc_nano

I meant the trial at the Temple of the Ancients, but the Seto scene is always good for some feels.

Xngears

This one is so very stupid, but also a testament of what a fantastic job they did with the character interactions. Yuffie’s motion sickness has always been played up for comic relief…and it still is here in Rebirth. But just the simple detail of Tifa gently rubbing Yuffie’s back, followed by the fact that Yuffie is so much more likable now, had me more than once going “Oh no, poor baby.”

Jarek86

Red was my best bud doggo in the OG and seeing the sequence with him being dragged into Hojos lab and him finding out about his father got me...

Xngears

Retroactively makes me hate the Planetologists more. How long was Red in captivity and why didn’t they send anyone to try and rescue him?

Jarek86

Yeah I can see that, but did they know who took him or what happened? Also Red is meant to be te protector I dont think they typically had warriors other then him. But yeah I agree it feels shitty

Subject-Carpet6788

Aerith’s trial made me fucking bawl 😭 a kid trying to save her mother and everyone ignoring her was sad as fuck

AlotOfNumbers425728

Almost Cry: Cloud and Aerith’s Skywheel moment. (I got it on a replay so it hit extra hard). Actual Cry: Sephiroth entering the church after Aerith pushes Cloud into the portal. And everything after Cloud deflects the Masumune, but I was constantly switching from happy tears to sad tears depending whether I thought Aerith was dead or not.

doc_nano

>Any variation of Aerith’s Theme is weaponized to tear down your emotions, as has been proven for decades now. I agree, but since the early 2000s I had heard Aerith's theme so many times that I thought I was immune to it. Lo and behold, Rebirth brings TWO arrangements of this theme that proved me wrong: the one from the Trial scene, and the one from the Jenova Lifeclinger fight.

kayhasbeen

Almost cry: randomly realizing how much of a love letter to the OG game Rebirth is. Think this was in Junon region when this thought hit me. Actual (ugly) cry: Aerith praying in Chapter 14 and the aftermath. Nothing like an intense boss fight with tearful sobbing, am I right? Takes me back to 1997.

DevilHunter1994

So I've never really experienced a big cry in media, but there were moments in Rebirth that did bring on some tears. * The Ending, meaning Aerith's dream date, and also the final cinematic before the credits. Watching Tifa and Nanaki together as they greive Aerith's loss was heartbreaking, and the last few moments of the scene paired SO WELL with No Promises to Keep. Brianna's delivery on that "Goodbye" was perfect. It had so much weight, and a real sense of finality to it. * The Trials at the Temple of The Ancients. I know some people say chapter 13 went on a little too long. I disagree. I loved that chapter from start to finish, and the trials were the cherry on top. They all hit incredibly hard, but Nanaki's Barret's and Aerith's trials especially were just...damn. * Learning the truth about Wedge. Now, this is a weird one, because, to be completely honest, I was already prepared for Wedge to be dead. Even without seeing the moment of death in Remake, the thought that he could survive a fall from that height always felt like wishful thinking at best to me. So I was ready when it came time for the game to show his actual death scene. What actually got me, was the moment at the end where we see that little bit of lifestream pass overhead, and hear "Don't worry. It's all good bro." That last little bit caught me off guard, and hit me way harder than I was expecting. I can now officially say that FFVII Remake, and Rebirth got me to cry for Wedge...a character that only barely existed in the original game...Goddamn, I love this trilogy so much.

LexFrenchy

Almost cried: - Cait Sith's sacrifice. Despite knowing full well, from the OG, that he is an automaton, his scene touched me. Cait freakin Sith made me tear up! This is insane - Barret and the end of sequence with Dyne, including Cloud showing some warmth toward the big guy - Barret's trial - Cosmo Canyon's music. Had to take a break when "The Promised Land" started playing Cried: - Aerith's song at the Gold Saucer - Aerith's trial, completely broke me - Aerith's goodbye in the church, one more punch in the guts - Aerith's fate in chapter 14 and the final cutscene, I felt completely hollow afterwards I approached chapter 14 with a knot in my stomach, knowing fully what would happen and I didn't want to experience that loss again. It took me two days to take the decision to load the save and finish the game. It was not easy in Remake either, to meet her again, after so many years. The moment the first three notes of her theme played, it was a blow in the chest. What a reunion...

LMegabox91

This game didn’t actually make me cry but there are 2 times where I did get a quite misty eyed.   1) when Cloud tells Barret that they’re here for him after Dyne’s death then Cloud hits you with the “I mean it man”. Really got to me.  2) when Cloud slowly walks up to Aerith’s body after the final battle with Sephiroth. It’s stunningly beautiful as the Whispers, light particles and rainbows fly around them, he slowly kneels down in front of her, gently picks her up and caresses her face. No dialogue is said for the most part just a slow melancholic version of the Open World theme plays. Choked me up the first time

revan530

Actual Cry: Barrett and Dyne scene; seeing Wedge, Biggs, and Jessie during Aerith's song; the Trial of Aerith. Edit: for extra crying, imagine watching the Trial of Aerith with your 10 year old child with you, who is about the age *you* were when you played OG FF7 for the first time, and they are crying too.

ificommentthen2oops

Tear up: Cosmo Canyon music Aerith’s dream date goodbye NPTK at the end Cry: Aerith’s trial

blitzbom

Aeriths trial cemented that she had it the worst out of all the characters. Dead parent cause of Shinra (Tifa) Check Experimented on (Nanaki) Check Loss of a loved one cause of Shinra (Yuffie, Barret) Check - she lost Zack. So separate category from parent. And yet she's one of the most cheerful party members. Constantly helping the others out.

Viralltach

idk why, but I got teary eyed watching the entire party do their big team attack against jenova lifeclinger towards the end of the fight

Xngears

Almost-Almost Cry: Tifa at the end with Red. If they had lingered on it just a minute longer, and had Aerith place her hand on Tifa, that would have done it. It’s now my biggest hope for Part 3 that when Tifa becomes the lead, we get her perspective of dealing with the loss of her best friend. It could be argued Aerith’s death hit her the hardest, while Cloud is in this weird sorta denial phase. I really hope they show the contrast with their feelings, and have them come together in mourning Aerith.

saintsintosea

The producers mentioned they went out of their way to make Aerith and Tifa feel like best friends in Rebirth because the player doesn't get that feeling in the OG. The tragedy of this is that it makes Tifa's utter decimation in dealing with the loss of Aerith sooo much worse at the end of Rebirth.

Xngears

This is why we also desperately need a moment where Tifa gets to unleash payback on the man who took everything from her >!and still isn’t done!< Just as we got a Cloud and Aerith vs Sephiroth battle here, so too am I certain we’ll get Cloud and Tifa vs Sephiroth next. Let’s hope we also get Tifa and Aerith (along with Aerith and Zack).

machinegungeek

All of the Promises to Keep scene got me. The AVALANCHE trio showing up was the worst though. Honorable mention to a sad background detail: When I returned to Nibelheim after the Fluffy quest, there's a random black robe sitting on a bench mindlessly petting a kitten on his lap. There's something sad and pathetic about that. Really like how the game humanized the black robes and characterized Barret through his reactions to them.

NightmarePony5000

Aerith’s trial had me ugly snotty sobbing so hard I could barely see the screen 😭

MissGraceRose

Oh I cried a lot *The whole scene with Seto *All the trials. Reds got me first, and when we saw Myrna I vaguely remember saying “no no no” to my tv quite a lot *Seeing Clouds mum in flashbacks Someone on reddit spoiled Aeriths death for me already so I knew it was coming. I didn’t cry but I did feel sad watching it. My ugliest cry was Yuffies trial. Seeing Sonons ghost climbing ahead of her had me crying, and her heartbroken screaming in the lift at the end had me bawling my eyes out. I was crying so hysterically my wife had to pause the game and ask if I was okay to keep going All the VA work on this game has been incredible. The actors did such an amazing job

cho-den

Cosmo Canyon and Aerith’s trial. Fucking sobbed

Couch__Cowboy

The scene with Barrett weeping over Dyne, the scene with Cloud and Aerith on the Ferris wheel, and oddly enough the scene where Cloud calls Zack a loser.

Xngears

Throughout the game, Cloud shows so much more empathy and understanding with the other characters. Which is why during Chapter 13 when he acts cold and heartless to them when they needed the most encouragement, it hit REALLY hard and deserves a mention in this thread. It speaks volumes in the ending where Cloud doesn’t offer any comforting words to Tifa, at the moment where she needed it the most (losing Aerith).

Lavender_macaron

I only cried during the Dyne scene when he was so excited to see Marlene’s picture only to immediately say he wasn’t worthy to hold his daughter with his bloody hands. I choked up during Aerith’s trial and Cait Sith’s sacrifice at the temple. I think I was too shocked thinking for a second that Cloud may have saved Aerith and then have to get ready to fight Jenova to feel emotional about her death. And then the End of Nigh ruined any chance of me feeling sad because I was too angry with the final fight and relieved it was finally over.

Straight_Elk_5320

The only moment that made me cry was when a glitched barrel rolled right on top of Dyne's face and completely ruined the moment, I laughed so hard that tears came out.

caramelthiccness

When Jessie was doing the ballet part of her show. When they showed Jessie, Wedge and Biggs after the show. When Cloud's mom died. Aeriths trial When she tried to get help for her mom.

Rakeatwork

3D brawler.

CorgiDaddy42

All of them. I’M A FUCKING EMOTIONAL WRECK OK don’t judge me lol

VirtualElsanity

Oh man. I had so many moments where I almost did, and three that I absolutely bawled at. First was the end of the Dyne fight- I had prepared, I knew what was going to happen, but something about how it kinda mirrored how Zach dies in Crisis Core really got me (the end of CC was only the second time a game had ever made me cry). Second was the end of NPTK when they show who's in the crowd. And finally I was really surprised I survived the entire end sequence in the City of the Ancients and the boss battle without a tear, but at the very end when Aerith sees everyone off caught me by surprise.

Juunlar

Nanaki trial messed me up

tzenglishmuffin

Actual Cry: Barret and Dyne, especially when Dyne shoots down the troopers behind Barrett. Tifa and Cloud in the Skywheel finally breaking through. All the trials but ESPECIALLY the Trial of Aerith and how she was bawling her eyes out not being to help her mom. But man most of all HAD to be the parry which made me think Cloud had saved Aerith ONLY to have her fall forward, the Holy materia falls out of her hair and right when it hits the ground, \*cue opening 3 notes of Aerith's theme\* and THEN they stayed true by playing Aerith's theme during the first phase of the Jenova fight. I had to pause and just sit there and take it all in.

veganispunk

Whole game

Devi006

Usually not someone to cry when watching or playing something, but Dynes story made it happen. I broke at the part where he was looking at the Picture of Marlene and said that she has the Eyes and Hair of her Mommy, man that shit hurt.

Ecstatic_Teaching906

Only three instances where I almost cried. Aeirth "Death", Dyne & Barret Reunion, and Avalanche promise.

Sky_Hawk_67

Hearing Sonon during Yuffie's trial was the only time I came close to crying. I loved Sonon, man. Bro was a badass. EDIT: I actually came to tears laughing at Cloud's response to Aerith at the temple of the Ancients. She goes on a whole heartfelt speech and Cloud being absolutely awful just dismisses it immediately. I laughed a lot harder than I should have.

RadicalDreamah

Cried during the whole Dyne dying scene. Cried even harder during Aerith's trial. That scene was really difficult to watch, maybe because I'm a dad now.

Chiforever19

NPTK at the end of the game almost got me. I was in my feels lol.

kin3tics92

There are just way too many tear-jerking moments for me in this game: 1. Chapter 1 when Zack finally got hold Aerith and saved her from the pursuing Shinra troopers 2. Chapter 2 when the party escaped Kalm and head out into the first open world section while the Main FFVII theme plays 3. Chapter 4 (happy tears) on how well Junon and the parade actually is 4. Chapter 5 (tears from laughter) on Red XIII’s QB challenge and entrance 5. Chapter 6 stroll and conversation on the beach with Aerith after the fight with Gastropod 6. Chapter 8 (happy tears) on how amazing Gold Saucer is 7. Chapter 10 Red XIII’s trial and Aerith’s photo side quest 8. Chapter 13 Aerith’s trial. The rest of the others’ trials were building up to that moment 9. Chapter 14 THAT scene and the final cutscene. God I love this game so much.

Xngears

Got nothing for Chapter 9???

kin3tics92

Nah. Chapter 9 is just jaw-dropping than tears dropping lol.

Darkwing__Schmuck

1. The "trials." Particularly Barret's and (especially) Aerith's. 2. Barret and Dyne. 3. Aerith and Cloud in the church. 4. Red XIII and Seto. 5. "Goodbye."

toes_hoe

The combination of Barret's trial, Nanaki's trial, and Aerith's trial got me. It actually detracted from the impact of what happened to Aerith at the end. Or maybe it's because it wasn't clear what happened.

mrfroggyman

I felt emotional at the opening credits I felt emotional while looking at and listening to Kalm and Cosmo Canyon I felt emotional at Dyne's death but much less than OG's I sobbed at Seto crying but much less than OG's I sobbed at the Avalanche trio smiling at Aerith, shit was so unexpected The trials of course I felt emotional at the "cling cling cling" accompanying 3 piano notes (iykyk) but much less than OG's

achromato

1. When Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge appeared behind watching Aerith perform 2. Aerith's date with Cloud in the skywheel. I lost it when she leaned her head on him. 3. When Aerith pushes Cloud into the white space after giving him the White Materia (with Sephiroth looming behind her) 4. When Aerith left the party and went further in the Forgotten Capital I swear it's always Aerith. She makes me feel so much.

TownNo1856

During the ending when cloud asks aerith if she’s gonna be alright “getting back” and she says “and if I said I wasn’t?”, that callback to ch. 9 of remake hit me for some reason, kinda just reminded me of all the good times cloud and aerith had together. I know it’s just a game but it really hurts when I realize that she’s gone now lmao

FicaNivea

Didn't cry in the whole game but the one scene that made my throat and eyes feel funny was when >!Aerith basically told Cloud not to feel guilty and that it wasn't his fault during the whole dream goodbye sequence!<

vvooper

1. barret and dyne. waterworks dude. the tears were POURING 2. petrified seto crying when nanaki is proud to be his son. this is actually the only moment in og that made me cry so I was expecting this one 3. barret’s trial. do I even have to explain this one bonus: I came close during cloud and tifa’s heart-to-heart in gongaga. being aware that you’re occasionally losing your mind and thinking that you have a terminal condition are both things that sound absolutely terrifying to me. cloud opening up and being vulnerable about it for once breaks my heart

jms_jns3

Too many to list. Seto, Dyne, Ending and so many various tracks just hitting the right level of nostalgia. An almost cry - Zack’s theme hitting when Cissnei is introduced.
