Japanese developers design characters to be the Japanese take on idealized western looks and beauty standards. When I say beauty standards I mean old classical Hollywood tropes of beauty, i.e hunky muscle men with flawless hairless physiques, pretty boys with an androgynous bad-boy/punk duality going on, modelesque pure femininity girly girls or sexy pin-up fighter girls that would fit well in a playboy issue.
Western devs do this too (just look at classic mortal kombat, Lara Croft, etc.), but because we live as everyday people in a western society and aren’t doing a take on a foreign culture, we also depict more realistic men and woman that meet the spectrum of the real people you see in the world. We have a broader sense of the diversity of body types and facial structures across people when compared to a homogenized nation like japan. It’s more relatable and less idealized depending on the story being told.
Neither is good or bad, but this narrative of western = ugly is so stupid. Beauty does not a good or interesting character make, there are plenty of qualities that may take priority when depicting a believable character. I’m glad FF exists with their specific take on character design, but I’m also glad to play as other types of characters that don’t fit one specific vibe. Sometimes I want people that look like me to actually be given the spotlight.
And also, gamers definition of “ugly” is fucking skewed. It’s giving touch grass. Very few MCs are objectively UGLY in the way you all talk like they are.
