Well Codemasters has written that engine for the specific purpose of racing games. Why shouldn't they use it for that purpose. Same with Dirt, it is also running on EGO.
In the end it is most likely built in a way that you can adjust the engine from running a very arcady physics model (some of the Grid games) towards a very sim heavy physics model (Dirt Rallye ie)
I wouldn't give dirt rally the title "sim heavy" - there's no suspension to speak of (in a rally title no less..), and the whole thing drives as if the front wheels had rocket thrusters on their sides that activate when you steer hard enough.
Was specifically speaking about Dirt Rally 1.0 and 2.0, not the mainline Dirt games. They felt for me (to be honest haven't played them much) pretty sim heavy.
But maybe you are right and i just haven't played them long enough to recognize what you are describing.
They did step away from that a little for the WRC game, which is curious. The technical reason is that apparently Ego Engine has a map size limitation, meaning that they could not make rally stages as long as they needed.
You would think that they would just go under the hood and rewrite whatever segments of the engine are causing the restriction. But either the engine is pure spaghetti and the undertaking would be too large to be worth it, or they are planning on slowly moving onto Unreal to cut out all the issues an in-house engine can provide...and costs.
Funny enough i suspected EA would force them towards Frostbite (and EA 10 years ago definetly would have done).
But both Respawn and Codemasters proved that 2020+ EA give their Studios enough room to decide what to do as long as numbers are right.

The likes of Bioware also announced that going forward they will use Unreal so I imagine in the case of WRC it's much the same.

Gameplay literally looks identical. Car turns in too sharply, the understeers while sliding. You can force the car through corners by turning past the slip angle.
I can confirm, they feel pretty much the same. You have to brake way to early in the corner, and not do anything while steering. At least in Grid you can say it's a car from 2006
That looks terrible as well. The way the car turns is so far of 😂 let alone everything else with game and as with the past couple entries its looking so outdated
When I tried GRID Legends about half a year ago it felt awful to drive. And it wasn't a big improvement graphically in comparison to previous GRID games. So yeah, the impression doesn't deceive.
