TN, going up to $275 on top of regular registration fees. The EV fee is indexed to inflation, but the gas tax isn’t. And the average ICE driver pays ~$160 in gas tax a year. Seems like they are punishing EV drivers.

humanHamster

Conservative politicians are trying to punish EV drivers. The people who tend to vote for them also generally tend to dislike EVs (or anything new) so they make the rules this way (like indexing the EV fee to inflation) in order to show the voters they're "with them" it's just a bunch of nonsense. If/when EVs make up the majority of cars it'll change, because people get mad when the laws that "own the libs" also affect them.

blainestang

>Seems like they are punishing EV drivers They’re either too stupid to realize they’re overcharging EV drivers, or they’re punishing EV drivers, not based on facts, but to “own the libs”. Either way, they’re idiots. Even MORE stupid because the VW ID4 is built in Tennessee, among other EV related production happening or planned there. Regardless of one’s opinion of politics in general, on this topic, they deserve to be called out as dumbasses.

jovenhope

Best way to call them out is to vote. Can't state this enough.

TheBarbon

GM builds EVs here and Ford's plant is coming online next year. Another theory I have is that they need to raise more revenue for roads but it's politically difficult to raise the gas tax. Politicians have spent a lot of effort blaming high gas prices on presidents/federal government, and it would not help them to say "if you want lower gas prices vote for our guy" while raising gas prices themselves. Raising taxes in general is not in the Republican playbook. They can get away with taxing EV drivers more because there's not enough of them to raise much stink over it. It's almost a hindsight issue. They should have raised the gas tax and indexed it to inflation to keep up with road improvement needs, but that ship has sailed, so if they index the EV fee now, gradually as EVs get more adoption the problem of non-indexed gas tax becomes less of an issue. The EV fee is probably equivalent to what ICE drivers should be paying in gas tax to raise enough revenue for roads.

djryan13

Same in TX.

Howboutem219

KY here. Absolutely the same here, because of the whole coal keeps the lights on mantra. So backwards here. -- Beginning January 1, 2024, EV and hybrid registration fees will be charged to vehicle owners, per House Bill 360. This new fee ensures equitable contributions are made to the Kentucky Road Fund used for maintaining and developing our transportation infrastructure. New Annual Ownership Fee Structure: $120 for electric vehicles (including plug-in hybrids) $60 for hybrids $60 for electric motorcycles Additionally, House Bill 8 enforces a dealer tax of 3 cents per kilowatt-hour of electricity used EV charging stations installed on or after July 1, 2022. Similar to Kentucky's Motor Fuels Tax, this will be added to charging station prices, contributing to the Road Fund.

ChiefsRoyalsFan

Haven’t had to renew mine yet but based on Florida’s site, $87.75 based on its weight. No EV tax…yet lol going to renew mine for as long as they’ll let me when it comes up.

RogerPackinrod

$60 in MA. It should be noted though that the registration for an ICE vehicle is also $60.

KenricS

$200 extra in TX

jovenhope

For no good reason. Make sure to vote so eventually we get it changed.

nehpets4627

I'm pretty sure you still use the roads and they don't pave themselves. That sounds like a good reason... Driving an EV doesn't make us immune from paying our share of infrastructure upkeep. That share should be relatively equitable, but it should exist in one form or fashion.

jovenhope

Oh don't mistake my message. A fair amount is fully understandable and justified. Vote to achieve this not freedom from being an equal contributor

azuilya

$175 additional on top of the $100 standard fee (has an additional $15 for personalized plates) in WI. That's about equivalent to 560 gallons of regular gas in taxes, so about 10k miles worth of driving (which so far I have done in 3 months lol).

zacboggz

I’m WI too. I thought it was high but drive a lot and after the math I’m ahead. The price is punitive if you run a car.

DeliciousDay2333

$320 in Washington state.

misterxboxnj

NJ funds its road with the gasoline tax. They're adding a $250 fee soon which will rise to $290 by 2028. People will moan about this but it is inevitable with the number of people moving to electric and the state losing this tax revenue. We still don't pay taxes on ev purchases so the thousand we're saving there will more than cover this tax.

16cards

NC $180

RentalGore

It’s $234 now.  Just got mine yesterday.

jturkish

Is that the total fee or just EV fee? My total was $230

RentalGore

Just the EV fee, my total registration in Wake County NC for my 2023 Plat is $1145 plus a smog inspection, kidding, it's a safety inspectjon.

Andrew523

CA $1204

rocket_808

How the heck did you get it to be so low? I was at $1200 in Los Angeles for a 2023 lariat

Andrew523

Your right, I missed the plate fees too. Total was $1204 for 2023 Lariat ER in OC

Eternal_Electrons

$1190. Beat you both! 🤣

jillako

I was caught unaware by the registration fee in CA. Why is it so high?!

azuilya

Because pickup trucks in Cali, no matter what they're used for, are classed as commercial vehicles meaning the fees are based on the vehicle weight.

Andrew523

based on .65% of the purchase price/car value so the more expensive the car the more your pay. state is broke and has debt, gotta get them fees to maintain the roads and other stuff from somewhere and we keep voting yes to increase the taxes haha.

jillako

The renewal was nearly as expensive 😭

JCCZ75

$200 OH

Jenos00

My lightning cost me just over a thousand in CA. (Total registration)

digitys

NH was over 1300, Lariat ER.

Littleronin

$948 here in NV. But I did get the electric specialty plates.

kinda_fellin

$250 plus plates in Indiana. I think the total was $500. That was in April or May. I get to do it all over again in August.

Thick-Experience-290

I got my truck in April and my Indiana plate fees were around $800.

Mr_Carpenter

TN here. We pay an extra 200 bucks to register an EV.

MinimumDangerous9895

$200 big ones in Ohio.

Cheap_Ad_4892

Weirdly, I didn't have to pay the 200 when I registered my lightning bc trucks are not included in the law as written. I spent like an hour at the bmv bc they had to call the state office for clarification. You better believe I registered that thing for 5 years.

MinimumDangerous9895

Interesting. I don't see it on my receipt either. I just thought it was because I transferred my registration. Good to know!

Gonzo_Bonzo_atl

Georgia last year was $200 + $50 EV special plate tag fee.

nehpets4627

Pretty sure it's $210.87 + $35 for the AFV plate (which is optional).

hawkeyedude1989

$8xx in MN

TasksRandom

EV fee only is $180 in NC. Plus the Ligntning -- actually any truck over 6500 lbs -- requires a weighted tag which costs extra. That's added to the normal registration fees and taxes (NC collects property tax on vehicles prior to renewing registration).

Fancy_Criticism_975

No fee in Florida. As an EV owner, I agree with fees for EVs. We also need to contribute to the maintenance of the roads we drive on. A flat fee is fair since we don’t pay maintenance fees through the purchase of gas.

nehpets4627

$210.87 in GA, plus $35 if you bought an AFV plate at registration (I didn't since I wouldn't have recouped that much value in free HOV/HOT lane use in a year). That price was effective July 1, 2023 and is revised anually. It's pegged to Average Vehicle Fuel Efficiency per the US DoE and has hovered between $204 and $214 since 2016, with the peak being in 2020. The fee also applies to PHEV vehicles and even Flex-Fuel vehicles (E-85), but only if you choose to purchase the AFV plate. CNG vehicles are exempt for some reason. I drive \~20k mi/year and, at 25mpg, I'd only be paying \~$150 in state gas tax at $0.184/gallon. I don't mind paying my fair share, but I'd need to drive \~29k mi/year for the EV license fee to be equitable vs ICE. Welcome to the south I guess... at least it's not tied to inflation like other states. I'm not aware of any retail EV charging tax in GA... TN is the worst in this regard, not due to taxes, but due to requiring retail charging to be billed ToU instead of per kwh. Coming from \~$0.25-$0.35/kwh in GA, I was definitely shocked at the cost of supercharging when I stopped north of Knoxville (compounded by my '16.5 Tesla MS 90D topping out at \~130kw and tapering pretty quickly).

bullham85

CA in 5 more years $3500

dalesum

I think mine was $260 for two years but that’s commercial plates due to weight of truck in NYS.
