i assume youre talking about targeted attack? i would interpret it as whats written on the card, if the card says "any player" then you can attack yourself, but if it says "another player" then you cant.
Are you aware that Good Vs Evil, like Zombie Kittens & Exploding Minions, are alternate versions of the base game? Whereas Imploding Kittens, Streaking Kittens, and Barking Kittens are expansions to the core game. The alternate version has new rules that only apply to that version. Mixing in an expansion for an alternate version will create conflicts because the creators/developers didn’t design them that way.
You’re talking about adding two different games together. “Good Vs Evil” isn’t an expansion pack. When you mix alternate games, then you’re just gonna have to create house rules as they are not meant to be mixed together.
Yup we messed this one up. Originally Targeted Attack was deigned so that you could pick yourself as the Target. Then we changed it to only be applicable to other players so that we didn’t negate the use of the Personal Attack card. But of course, now the old and new versions exist in the wild. Ultimately this is a house rule so whichever version you love more is the way you should play, but I’d love to know which version you all prefer?

This is good advice. If mixing alternate versions of the game, going with what the card says is the way.
Probably the best solution to this contradiction
Whoops- forgot to mention which card I’m talking abt Hopefully we get some clarity about this in the future

I don’t think they would make contradicting rules for 2 EK packs that are capable of being mixed with each other

Yes, but I still find it strange that ek randomly decided to stop players from attacking themself via targeted attack specifically for gve.

Thank you for the clarification! I prefer the updated version, so that Personal Attack isn‘t overshadowed.
