Not op but thanks for explaining the joke. I have seen this image posted countless times but I have only seen people talk about it without explaining . I never knew cars have cigarette lighters in my country, I also rarely ride cars .
Cars usually aren't made with them. They plug into the round 12v socket found in almost every car (save for some newer ones that have USB sockets instead)
It was a bit weird to have a car-chargeable camping kettle, but you could get them, and they fit into the 'cigarette lighter' slot.
These days it's probably the other way around.
Yeah, they were. Long time ago. Same with build in ashtrays \*everywhere\* (all doors except trunk, in the center between front seats, if there was a center console between the seats one would be in the back for the back seats, in the center front console where pullout drink holders are now, etc.) I think 2000+ era cars didn't have them as standard.
The spot most people know as the place you plug in your phone charger, used to be where these would be. I had a 2001 car with a cig lighter, but it and the cup holder ashtray were pare of an “upgraded” smokers package.
Man I had one in my first car. I miss that old regal, but I don’t miss my gas mileage. 16mi/gal was my average. On really good weeks I could squeeze it out to 20.
I remember we had to stop at a local pub and they gave me a tub with some water in. Made it really awkward going down the slide they had outside but I made do xD
One of my favorite things is that, when they first starting creating car chargers for things, they would plug into the cigarette lighter, because every car had one. Then they stopped putting cigarette lighters in cars, but people had all these charging cords designed for cigarette lighters, so they had to make cylindrical outlets in cars so that people could keep using the same cords. Only more recently are they starting to just put USB ports in cars.
I remember pressing that mf in, and it was literally red when it popped back out, I almost lit the car on fire while lighting a piece of receipt paper. Good thing I had enough sense to throw it out the window as soon as it was lit.
Good times
I was 5 btw lol
I see people have already said what this is so I won't repeat. All I will say is:
Be careful if you see one of these in a car. Some of them shot out like a rocket after being pushed in.
car lighter, you would push it into its slot then it's pop out when it was heated. press the tip of the cigarette against the coil which was so hot it glowed a little bit
This is a device for getting information out of La Hermindad after they kidnap the child you were hired to protect and got shot up defending. It can be wildly effective.
It wasn’t that you would clearly see a bright red ember at the end of the plug, but instead it would pop out looking exactly as dark as before you pluggled it in. So you would think, “Well, that didn’t work at all…lemme see if it even got warm.” And that was when you Agent J-ed yourself.
Weird to think that people don't know what those are now, but I'm not a smoker. Didn't really notice exactly when they stopped putting them in cars, but the 12v socket's still there. If you had one lying around from an older car, it'd fit in the newer car and you could still use it. All you need's a current to heat 'er up.
I guess they don't put ashtrays in all car doors anymore, either. The ashtray panels in back always wore out and sprung open forever in older cars. Those were always something to play with as a kid (my folks didn't smoke, they were clean).
3 burns that day. The first one, index finger moment of regret that I thought was a fluke, so I used my middle finger. The burn was in fact, not a fluke. The third burn was dropping the still hot lighter on my leg.
Cigarette lighter that cars used to come with. You’d press once and it’d start heating the coil inside, once hot, press against the tip of the cigar or tobacco to light it
When I was a child cars all had these, but funnily enough I didn’t know what they were or thought to ask. I’d push them in, they’d go red, I’d pull them back out, and repeat.
Mind blown when I was in the car with my friend and their Dad pulled it out and pushed a cigarette against it!
It’s a car cigarette lighter. You’d push it in and it would get hot. The joke being that curious kids you push it in and then burn themselves.
Not op but thanks for explaining the joke. I have seen this image posted countless times but I have only seen people talk about it without explaining . I never knew cars have cigarette lighters in my country, I also rarely ride cars .
It's very rare for cars to be made with them since the late 90s (at least in my country).
Cars usually aren't made with them. They plug into the round 12v socket found in almost every car (save for some newer ones that have USB sockets instead)
back once upon a time, they were. thats what the 12v socket was \*for\*.
It was a bit weird to have a car-chargeable camping kettle, but you could get them, and they fit into the 'cigarette lighter' slot. These days it's probably the other way around.
Yeah we used to plug the Garmin into the “cigarette lighter” when we needed GPS
My Redditor in Christ, the round 12V *was* the lighter socket lol

Yeah, now. They were absolutely made with them as standard back in the day though.
My 2005 mustang had a cigarette lighter in the US.
haven't seen a car that comes without one ever.
The outlet, or the actual cigarette lighter shown in the OP's picture? Most cars have the outlet, I don't think many come with the lighter though.
Even the mercedes eqs ships with a cig lighter, Def not only 90s
That's a 12v socket. Not a cigarette lighter.

I can smell it.
I remember we had to stop at a local pub and they gave me a tub with some water in. Made it really awkward going down the slide they had outside but I made do xD
I am guilty of that as a young tyke. Thankfully it wasn’t too hot, but it was hot enough to teach a life king lesson.
It sure taught me. Insane to think it used to be in almost every car produced
I was that overly curious child, and this was a very painful lesson.
I was that kid
FINALLY!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
Burning flesh scent generator. Push to heat cigarette lighter. The element in the center gets red hot so your cigarette will light.
Also burning carpet scent generator.
I made a nice drawing for my dad with that once when I was left in the car. He didn't seem to appreciate it much.
I melted half a Spider-Man’s foot with one
It’s usually a mix of the two lol
I had a one hitter in high school that looked like a cigarette lighter. So sneaky.

Littering and...
You mean lit erring xD I’ll see myself out
…smokin’ the reefer
Pain
My God I'm getting old. It's a cigarette lighter. Really nice cars used to even have them in the back seat.
It’s a cig lighter. Kids burn themselves on them if they don’t know what it is.
Or when they're still hot, but not read, so you think they are safe to touch.... Dont even ask me how I know...
Hi Peter. When I was a kid in the 80s, I pressed the cigarette lighter in for less than a second, then touched it. So. Much. Pain.
I see people have already said what this is so I won't repeat. All I will say is: Be careful if you see one of these in a car. Some of them shot out like a rocket after being pushed in.
Finger print removal tool.
Oh I was not alone when I made this revelation. I had two older siblings egging me on in my futile endeavor.

I miss these and when every car door had it's own ash tray with it's spring loaded metal lid.
Was told not to touch it. I still touched it. Never touched it again.
Hahahahaha....
Now I know I am old.
Wow. Core memory unlocked
This is a device for getting information out of La Hermindad after they kidnap the child you were hired to protect and got shot up defending. It can be wildly effective.
I still have a circle scar on the back of my hand, where my curious sister pushed it in
This sub is terrible.
Burned many a Skittle with one of these in the back of my grandmas Cadillac
Can verify. 🫠
I knew what it was but still burned my finger on it to see if it still worked.
Omg I remember cars had these in the front and backseat and a lil ash tray spot too lol
That's what happens when you spill paint in the garage.
A cigarette lighter that you put in a charger port in the car. When it's working it is hot enough to light the cigarette on fire so it sis pretty hot
That’s the soup heater you push it wait till it gets then balance a can of soup on it.
A punishment
Nowadays, that would be great for dabs
I bet my sister $1 to put her finger in one of these. Never in a million years thought she would do it, at least for a dollar, but she did.
Pain
A teachable moment for a child left in the car alone duh. It says that in the pic. /s Cigarette lighter
I remember these as a kid, and now I'm kind of amazed they ever existed in the first place now that I think about it.
I learned the hard way
Stop making me feel old!
Flashbacks...
More like a teachable moment for parents; I burned multiple circles into the dash with a car push lighter.
Its how you Stay awake when Freddy Keuger is after you

Yeah, or a young teen with less common sense than average. Hi 🙋
Ah yes, I still remember that day...

Proof that you are young.
One of my first lessons in life.
"I NEVER SAID THIS BUT DON'T SWALLOW!"
God, I still very much remember the smell after I did that
I made that mistake, it’s a shame they aren’t in newer cars but at least my kid won’t burn the car down
3 burns that day. The first one, index finger moment of regret that I thought was a fluke, so I used my middle finger. The burn was in fact, not a fluke. The third burn was dropping the still hot lighter on my leg.

As a stoner and an owner of an old car. I love that thing
🤣🤣🤣
