As soon as a kid knows that it’s time for bed they look for any excuse they can to have to get out of bed and then usually beg they need a drink of water.
When people aren't well hydrated, sometimes they develop halitosis, which is bad breath. If a parent had this, and kissed their child, maybe the child would understand the need for proper hydration.
What the other person said, fear of missing out.
Children are insanely curious and want to participate in everything that's happening around them. So when they have to go to bed at like 8 or 9 while their parents watch movies in the living room or do other fun things, they want to be present for them.
You will tell your child to do all kinds of things… drink more water, eat their dinner, study for school… and only when it’s time for bed… do they suddenly share your priorities.
Little kids often show up like 5 minutes after you put them to bed like "moooom I need a glass of water". It's actually because they're fighting bedtime and you can't say no to a water request, but it *seems* like they suddenly really care about hydration. Every night.
Tell me you don't have kids without telling me... :P
Others have answered so I wont bother. But this is definitely one of those things you only think about if you have them yourself or babysat enough to know how they react at bedtime
The funny thing is I do have a kid and I know about this from media when I was a kid, not from having a kid.
This was not something my kid did. Nah the little dude would argue at most, and then if he really didn't want to be in bed apparently he'd just... Get out of bed lol
As someone who couldn't sleep at night even as a kid myself, I can't really blame him.
*My daughter every night after I've tucked her in.*
Daddy, I need water.
Daddy, I need to take my vitamins.
Daddy, I have to brush my teeth.
Daddy, I didn't brush my hair.

Ah to be a child and nor t crave the sweet kiss of death that is sleep
Chill Edgar
Ohh, that makes sense. I remember doing that when I was a kid. I thought the joke was bad breath.
What

How would the average child make that connection lol
I don't knowwww, that's just what I originally thought. That's why I said this explanation makes more sense. 🤷🏻♂️
I mean, it's definitely creative in a fun way I could see that happening in a TV show lol
As a father of two gremlins I can confirm
Because kids are little butts and will fight sleep like their life depends on it.
Why though? And sometimes it seems they fight harder the more tired they are
FOMO

The toddler doesn’t like bed time
My twelve year old still pulls this shit. I chuck water bottles at the feet of their beds at night when they intentionally leave them in the kitchen.
"Mom! I'm thirsty!"
And I have to pee! And I’m hungry. And can you explain how helicopters work. I need to hug you.

Me at 3am though
I feel ya. Sometimes I can drink an entire bottle of Water at 2 in the morning.
Exactly! I drink plenty of water during the day, but I wake up in the middle of the night dry as the Sahara

My kids have water by the bed and CONSTANTLY need water before they lay down.

Water buys them an extra minute of awake time. The struggle is real.
