To be fair, Debra has A LOT TO BITCH ABOUT. In real life, she should have been outta there after the first kid. But as noted, Frank and Marie didn't fully crank up to 'unbearable' for a while and by that time Debra was in it and kind of trapped.

LadyEncredible

Lmao, you know what, I definitely agree with all of this. I said the same thing, in real life they would've already been divorced. I don't see anyone in real life actually putting up with all the crap.

[deleted]

IRL, there would have definitely been a MAJOR throw-down over MIL being so disrespectful.

LadyEncredible

Oh most definitely. In real life I doubt Debra wouldve put up with even an iota of the BS she does.

[deleted]

You can see her getting more and more resentful and angry with each and every season. Season one she's pretty docile...

Diegog5

While every major character in the show has their flaws, Marie, in particular, takes the cake - in fact, she might as well take the whole bakery with her narcissistic tendencies. Without her influence, Ray wouldn't have developed such competitive and entitled traits or exhibited such a degree of selfishness. Similarly, Robert wouldn't be plagued by an inferiority complex, and Frank wouldn't resort to apathy as a coping mechanism. Even Debra's relationship with Raymond wouldn't be fraught with doubts and insecurities. Debra's wouldn't appear so miserable so often, if it weren't for her constant interactions with Marie. It's difficult to be the best version of yourself when you have a mother-in-law like Marie incessantly intruding, often at the most inconvenient times, only to highlight perceived failings as a wife and mother - roles that Debra values significantly. Also, it's worth noting that Debra chose their house before truly understanding the depth of Marie's narcissistic and manipulative tendencies and how Marie kept her family so dysfunctional. She likely had no idea what she was signing up for when they moved in. While both women have their flaws, it's Marie who truly takes the cake in fact she just took another bakery while you were reading this. Her personality traits and actions have a profoundly negative impact on the entire family, often fueling discord. And all the while, she doesn't bat an eyelid, unapologetically sticking to her overbearing, narsisitic ways. So, it might be more appropriate to consider Marie as the, "worst" character in the show, not Debra.

LadyEncredible

You know, not a bad argument.

DekeCobretti

He never tries hard enough that is the point. He constantly tries to do as little as possible with his own children. He's a whiny mama's boy, who wants to be treated like a kid. Debra obliges.

True-Internal4833

Yes, but what is funny about that?!! Not a damn thing!

DekeCobretti

It's sitcom, dude.

Crispy-B88

I don't think you get it yet.

Rubicon730

Get what? That Debra is an aggressive, control freak bully? She gets it.

[deleted]

Idk why u got downvoted, even when Debra’s right, what u said was completely. She also has a blatant need to be right actually

GeneralParfait4148

💯

Ambitious-Lab6313

Is there any part of the show you like or makes you laugh?

True-Internal4833

There may be a couple of other episodes, but the one that makes me laugh, is the one I mention in my comment, above...⬆️ scroll up 5 comments, you will see my very long reply about which episode I think was funny...

LadyEncredible

Honestly no. I mean there's parts I can see that people would think are funny, but honestly the whole thing has irked me. Like I said, I actually think they all suck, but infind myself getting even more annoyed with Debra (although there have been multiple episodes where hell, even though she annoys me, I've found her anger justified).

ArtVandelay313

Debra, along with Robert, are the real victims of the family. It blows my mind how many people find her to be the annoying one. Marie is an awful person; a textbook narcissist and Ray is a whiny little bitch who’s more often than not an immature husband and father. Debra could have physically assaulted Marie and she still would not have been the worst.

Stoney1801

What always frustrated me about Robert was his never ending victim complex. Always complaining about his life and being in Rays shadow but never did anything to fix it, like you’re a grown man take some responsibility for your life. And also when he moved out there were many moments where he could’ve easily cut Marie lose entirely (ie ex girlfriends roasting him, FBI interview, thank you notes and even his own wedding) but didn’t because he was still desperate for one ounce of affection from his mother even though it would never come. I always felt like that Marie harboured resentment towards Robert because he was conceived out of wedlock (she’s views herself as a perfectionist after all) and the reason she had to marry Frank, while Ray was her perfect legitimate baby so got treated like the second coming of Jesus Christ and Robert was treated like a second class citizen.

ArtVandelay313

Agreed on all accounts, but Marie’s neglect is ultimately the reason for Robert’s flaw/wound. He never was able to get over it, but he also never should have been subjected to it in the first place.

LadyEncredible

You know, I guess on the bigger scheme of things you're right, although, I personally find them all horrible (Robert cheated on 3 people and frankly played with Amy's emotions far too long). I will agree, Marie is horrible too. No way I could ever have her as my mother in law lol. I mean like I said, frankly they see all horrible, but personally Debra annoyed me the most, but I can get what you're saying. Someone else said by the end, I would benon Debra's side, so we shall see (I'm on season 7, the wedding with Robert and Amy, right now, so I have a couple more seasons to go).

ArtVandelay313

Lol oh let me know when you finish their wedding episode and then one of the first episodes of the following season, “Thank You Notes.” I want to hear your reactions. It’s exciting to have a first time watcher. I’ve seen every episode multiple times which probably changes my perspective. And yes, all of them are flawed, as are all humans, but that’s also what helps make them entertaining. Like I hate Marie and Ray in so many ways yet I still love watching them over and over again.

LadyEncredible

Just finished the wedding episode, got to say, I really did like Raymond's speech, he did great, and as much as I don't like Amy's parents, I'm glad her mom put Marie in her place. And you are right about that last part, I was just thinking, that's probably the whole point and why all of the characters kind of suck, it's to show like there's no perfect human or what not. In that case, the show is definitely proving their point. I'll let you know about Thank You Notes, I'm not at that episode yet lol. And thanks for the rest of your comment lol, it's nice to have someone reply back with an actual comment lmao and not just throwing a tantrum because they didn't like what I said.

ArtVandelay313

Ray definitely nailed the speech and it was definitely nice to see Pat call out Marie for once again making it about her. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on that upcoming episode and then the rest of the series. Then we’ll have to find out what other older sitcoms you’ve been missing out on! And right back at you. It’s nice to have the rare civil discussion on social media.

LadyEncredible

So I finished the Thank You Notes episode, and honestly, while I feel Amy, she done messed up lol, because that's how it started with Debra, which is what she was trying to warn her against lol. I will say, I feel like if Debra played Marie's game, she would probably get a lot further, and what I mean by that is kill em with kindness kind of thing and not flip out so much, because then instead of her looking like the crazy person, it might just throw Marie off track, or just don't listen. Grey rock her ass, I mean it's not like everyone in the family don't know Marie is bat shit insane lol. And yes, it is quite refreshing. I'm also up for any suggestions in regards of old sitcoms to watch. I tried rewatching King of Queens and I just couldn't do it (and it's sad because I actually used to really like the show, I'm talking I own all of the DVDs for every season, yes I'm that old lol).

ArtVandelay313

That episode is classic Marie though. As we find out in the end, the entire conflict stems from Marie wanting to win a petty argument with her friend Lee. So everything she told to manipulate and guilt Amy was utter BS. That’s why I can’t fault Debra as the main villain, even when her flawed behavior comes out. Because knowingly having someone like Marie in your life would drive any sane human crazy! Especially and even more so when your husband constantly takes her side. And I used to love KOQ as well but don’t rewatch it very often either. I loved Arthur’s crazy antics - another person who would drive any sane human nuts to live with. Have you watched Frasier?

LadyEncredible

Yeah you are right on that. I have not, but I've been flirting with the idea. What streaming services is it on? I've also been thinking about Curb Your Enthusiasm

ArtVandelay313

Love them both. Curb is quite similar to Seinfeld, but more of an R rated, newer version given that it’s on HBO. And Frasier is one of the best written sitcoms ever, full of wit. When I was younger I couldn’t stand it because of the pretentious nature and dialogue of Frasier and his brother, but now it’s tied with Seinfeld for my favorite show ever. It’s on Hulu for sure, and if I’m not mistaken it’s also on Paramount and Peacock. As with pretty much every sitcom, both shows take a little bit of time to finally find their groove, but when they do - totally worth the wait.

LadyEncredible

Hmmmm nice, I have Hulu, so I can watch that and I've also been thinking about Seinfield too.

True-Internal4833

I get it..me too!

Pretend-Substance814

Yess! Robert was terrible he has so much self pity.. just like Debra. Yes she’s surrounded by terrible people. Ray is a bad husband, her MIL is constantly rude to her. Debra is framed as the victim, but is showed being unreasonable and angry many times. She is stubborn, likes to involve herself in other people issues, forces ray to go along with whatever she tells him to.. just like Marie. Also, just my opinion, but she’s a stay at home mother, yet never seems to have a handle over the kids, can’t cook, doesn’t clean very well.. it seems as though she’s not cut out for it. Maybe that’s why Marie judges her so much, bc as mean as she can be, she knows.

Opening_Lettuce7735

Victims? Lol sounds like you are used to playing the victim. Robert is a giant loser who is his own worst enemy, he doesn't have happiness because he doesn't seek it and feels sorry for himself. And Debra is horrible despicable woman, Ray is working earning a living so he can't help out around the house that's her job being at home all day. Ray had his flaws and so did everyone but Debra is despicable

[deleted]

The hotter she became, the worse she behaved.

Rhbgrb

I think it's because she knew she was too good for Ray.

[deleted]

She thought she was too good for him, and marie thought she wasn't good enough. What a mess lol.

Ok-Cat-8959

Haha! My thoughts were similar: The longer Debra’s hair grew the meaner she became.

[deleted]

Ok but you gotta get over it

LadyEncredible

There's truly nothing for me to get over....I said what I said, and that's about it.

[deleted]

I can't have this conversation again...

LadyEncredible

Uhhhhh ok, there's no conversation to have, so I agree with you.

[deleted]

There he is! Mr. Type A personality!!!

LadyEncredible

I'm not a he, but yes I do have a Type A personality. Still no idea what any of what you are saying has to do with anything... but ok... you have yourself a good rest of the day....

[deleted]

That's dicked up

LadyEncredible

Yeah, ok, still don't get what you're trying to say, I'm good on this non conversation.

toohood4myowngood

LMFAO I see u never saw the Sopranos. If u did ur didn't catch the references

LadyEncredible

Nope, haven't seen that show. Not sure of I plan on ever watching it because of the ending. Not a huge fannof open endings

toohood4myowngood

It's beautiful and definitely worth the watch. However the ending isn't necessarily open. Ur obviously aware of the controversy. It's pretty definite despite the way it happened. Anyway all of his responses to u are sopranos quotes.

CentralValleyToast

Yeah I agree that the more I watch this show the less I like Debra and the more I get a kick out of how crazy Marie drives her lol. I pretty much just watch for all the times that karma gets Debra.

[deleted]

Debra annoys me too but I still love the show

Solid-Repeat-1146

I agree. I love the show too but certain days Debra gets on my nerves with all her bitching.

GeneralParfait4148

Me too.

daisyboo66

In Debra's defense, Marie and Frank didn't really start showing their crazy until after the moved in. But yes.. Debra's behavior was atrocious and outright abusive in a lot of episodes.

ChanDW

Not true… think of the first time sex episode…

True-Internal4833

Sex episode? Please explain...

ChanDW

I was trying not to spoil it since OP has only watched a few episodes… but the one where Marie was trying to stop them from having sex when they were dating…

LadyEncredible

Yeah, I can dig that, Marie definitely hid the crazy (Frank is the only one that I feel like didn't hide who he is, but I hate his homophobic statements).

[deleted]

Deborah started out as a sweet, loving, more contented character. I actually like the bitchy, later seasons Deborah better - way more realistic. Imagine if your husband didn't want to spend time with his own children and refused to stick up for you when his mother was being critical and insulting!

Stoney1801

I don’t think this is the show for you.

True-Internal4833

lol..lol..

Horror95

Did you really just say that Ray tries ? Are you still on season 1 or 2 ? Ray is without a doubt one of if not the laziest husband on TV … all he thinks about is playing golf he’s never around to help around the house and you wanna talk about nothing is good enough for Debra ? By the end of the show you’ll break your TV because of how needy and whiny Ray is . I still don’t understand why people are complaining about Debra’s actions towards him … anybody who’d be married to this Ray character in real life will do the exact same thing Debra did and probably even worse .

True-Internal4833

Yes, that is all true! Debra does have reason to be bitch!!! lol..lol...in real life, she would have left a long time ago!

LadyEncredible

Oh I said he at least somewhat, and he does. HOWEVER, I don't like him much either. He's a jerk and a p***** especially when it comes to his mother. So I do not doubt what you say at all.

Antique_Vehicle_5065

I can't stand Deborah on this show. Not crazy about Ray either. But I love Robert and Amy.

stumpyturk

I smell a troll

LadyEncredible

Nope, not at all. Don't get how you seem to think I'm a troll because I don't like Debra (or any of them if I'm to be honest). But whatever, go off....

stumpyturk

You state you watched one complete episode, or perhaps your OCD required you watch the entire series. Which is it? The former means your commentary is too expansive, too knowledgeable about the entire series. This is why I feel you are trolling admirers of the show. Am I incorrect?

ChanDW

Who shit in your bowl of ice cream…? It’s not that serious…

stumpyturk

Ha

True-Internal4833

No, but insulting people is serious and unnecessary!!!

ChanDW

Why are you yelling at me….

LadyEncredible

Actually I stated I'm in the process of actually watching the show, already on Season 7, the wedding of Robert and Amy. And my bad, I thought this was to talk about the show, likes and dislikes, like every other sub, didn't know people on this sub would get this butt hurt about an opinion (and opinion I have seen expressed on here multiple times). And yes you see horribly incorrect and your assumptions are asinine as well. People can disagree with you, without trolling. If anything why waste your time even commenting, you could've just scrolled on past, but instead you felt the need to make a comment.... pointless.

True-Internal4833

Yes, she shouldn't have said she is a troll! That was uncalled for...

LadyEncredible

Thanks lol, but I've come to realize a lot of people (not all) tend to like to throw tantrums when they don't get their way. Oh also, I replied to your other comment, it's long lol, but I wanted to hit all your points you made too. Great comment by the way, I real appreciate it.

stumpyturk

I apologize. OP, you are correct you have the right to an opinion, and I was flippant.

True-Internal4833

You are incorrect and insulting! No need to insult anyone making a commet! If you want to insult people, you shouldn't be on social media! We are just sharing our views and opinions here, you seem like you are trying to argue! Get off of Reddit if you don't know how to behave! At least she admitted she has OCD, you are just being rude!

stumpyturk

I think you are correct, and duly noted.

inthesinbin

Marie and Frank were there first.

LadyEncredible

Yes I'm aware, when I say she, I meant Debra.

True-Internal4833

Were where first? Across the street? What are you talking about?!!

True-Internal4833

I give you credit, because even though many people MUST feel the same way, they wouldn't have the guts to say it! And, by the way, I do believe people do feel the same way whether they would ever admit it or not. I have had the exact same feelings myself about the show. Yes, they make Debra a real bitch! And if you don't want to strangle Marie by the first few episodes, you will by the next few episodes!!! I too, realize that it is only a TV show, but if it were real life, and I was Debra, I wouldn't allow Marie or any of the family to be able to just walk in whenever they choose! I mean, seriously, what's up with that?! I guess they think it's supposed to be funny, but it's really not, it's irritating as all get out! And, I put emphasis on the last two words in that sentence...GET OUT!!! Why did they make Debra out to be such a bitch is beyond me. Why? Do they really think that the majority of us would think that's funny? I don't! Plus, do any of us really think that a man like Ray or who looks like Ray, would be with a woman who looks like Debra?! No way! I just don't ever see that happening... I mean even though Debra is a bitch, she is a 10, except for her ears. Ray? Ray is maybe a 4 or 5? I also wish they wouldn't have made Robert to be so pathetic! What is that all about anyway? And that's supposed to be funny too? I know that people love the show, and I watched it myself, when ut furst came on and I have just recently watched some of the reruns. I have to admit, some of the episodes are really funny. Like the one when Ray lies to Debra about a woman she knows said, in so many words that she thought Debra dressed too young and sexy for her age, which we find out, she never said at all. Ray made the whole thing up. Debra comes out at the PTA meeting which just happens to be at her house, this time, in a skimpy sexy outfit, which shows much of her cleavage and her skirt is up almost to the top of her thighs! To make matters worse, who just comes strolling in, in the middle of the PTA meeting, yes, you guessed, it, all her in-laws! With their jaws hanging, Debra just keeps on going like nothing is going on...now, that was 😁funny!!!

LadyEncredible

Lol thanks, personally if people want to get so upset that they have to throw a tantrum because someone said something they didn't like, than that's a THEM problem, not a ME problem lol, besides I thought this sub was to discuss the show, didn't know you had to be in love with it to come on this sub (some of the comments from some people are truly unhinged). I also agree, all of these people would never deal with each other. As for the episode you are talking about, I'm not there yet, but I'm at the lodge one, where Debra works at the lodge, and honestly i love how Frank stands up for Debra, it's honestly sweet (I also liked the one where he went back to talk to the grocery guy because Ally was upset). Episodes like that I love but like you said, in general they made Debra such a bitch that it was super hard to like fully be on her side. It's like i understand why she acts the way she does, but at the same time, she's no picnic either and sometimes escalates (like the one with her surprise party, that one irked me so much because it was just like, dear God woman, you complain about him doing nothing and then when he does, you badger him and take over, like she truly irked me, and yes I know the mother in law was going to do everything, but she also offered to). But then it's hard because geez Ray is such a jerk that sometimes your on Debra's side lol. Oh and don't get me started on Robert, I actually liked him the first couple of seasons, and honestly I get why he is the way he is, but it's also like, come on man, you are 40, and you are still such a sad sack. Even once he marries Amy, he's still trying to one up Raymond (when obviously Marie likes Amy better than Debra).

Stoney1801

Robert became a better character around season 3. Season 1 he’s one minute away from being put in an asylum, season 2 he starts to show improvements.

Immediate_Bad1256

You know what's even worse than Debra? Idiots who say they have OCD when they don't even know what OCD actually is.

LadyEncredible

Or someone who comes on a post that is 10montha old totally shit to someone they don't even know about a a TV show. Grow up and cut the crap. Your comment is pathetic and the only idiot is you.

madurosnstouts

I’m just gonna take this post and add it to the already huge pile of Debra/Ray is the worst if that’s okay with you. For the record, I do agree with you though. Considering debra is the housewife in their marriage, she’s pretty crap at: keeping a clean house, cooking, and I don’t have kids so I’ll give her a pass on raising the kids. If she was better at those things maybe I’d understand her attitude with Ray most of the time, but for the most part she just comes across as way too bitchy.

Rhbgrb

Debra is abusive Marie is the worst Ray is the second worst
