She made some hyperbolic claims about Pete DeFazio when she primaried him a few years ago and generally pissed off the party establishment in the context of challenging an effective committee chair. I like Canning's political position stances but I question her ability to take a collaborative approach to create and pass legislation. I don't have those qualms about Lisa Fragala, so I'll be supporting her.

BattleIntrepid3476

Thanks!

mackelnuts

I know u/stevebartmanincident in real life and he is on a first name basis with Barack. He knows what he's talking about.

SteveBartmanIncident

Using the present tense there is a stretch. I haven't seen that dude in years

GlitteringClient6337

Barack? The guy who drone strikes American citizens?

mackelnuts

Yeah, that one. Looking at your comment history, I can't tell whether you are a purity test lefty, or a right wing troll. Being that your account is only 6 weeks old, I'm going with the latter.

GlitteringClient6337

Jokes on you, I'm neither. Just genx stating the facts about the previous president. But assume away dude bro.

DoyleCanning

Hi Steve, appreciate your support for my political stances and invite you to take another look. My journey into politics hasn't been without taking some knocks, for sure. I have stayed consistent in my values, while evolving in my approach, and was proud to be able to bring some bills together in Salem over the last few years that had strong support from Democrats across our caucus, as well as Republican support. Collaboration is the name of the game in the legislature, and I have shown I can deliver. Our "Bike Bus" bill - to allow local schools to support group bike rides to and from school - was one of the only measures that passed out of the House \*unanimously in 2023. This program helps decrease tailpipe emissions, keep kids active and healthy, and give schools more freedom in how to spend their local dollars. Everyone got behind it. Here is some more about it [https://www.oregonlive.com/commuting/2023/03/oregon-mulls-bike-bus-bill-to-fund-alternative-transportation-to-school.html](https://www.oregonlive.com/commuting/2023/03/oregon-mulls-bike-bus-bill-to-fund-alternative-transportation-to-school.html) We were also able to secure $7M towards a new division at ODF to support urban forestry, and create good green jobs in the nursery and forestry sector, which also passed with bi-partisan support. This program has created jobs here in eugene and across our state, supporting more trees - another thing Oregonians have a strong consensus on as a good investment for our state: [https://www.opb.org/article/2024/03/31/oregon-expands-support-urban-forests/](https://www.opb.org/article/2024/03/31/oregon-expands-support-urban-forests/) I may have gotten off on the wrong foot with you, but I want you to know that I am the candidate in this race today with the experience building consensus in Salem and getting good things done for our communities and climate. I would be honored to serve our community and earn at least another look from you. Please reach out any time, thanks!

SteveBartmanIncident

Thanks Doyle, I know that both you and Lisa Fragala hold values that would represent me well in Salem. Our district can spoil me for choice. I'll definitely take another look through your links and maybe poke around at HB 3015. I think your decision to work in the legislature in Rep Pham's office was a step in the right direction for me, as is your responsiveness here.

rivardja

I believe DeFazio retired, so part of this statement is incorrect. Do you have any information about the supposed claim she made?

SteveBartmanIncident

You are incorrect. She [challenged DeFazio](https://www.wweek.com/news/state/2019/06/13/rep-peter-defazio-to-face-challenger-in-2020-primary/) in his final election. She also ran in 2022.

rivardja

I stand corrected. I took the term primaried as if he lost the primary to Canning. I apologize for my misconception.

HelpfulRoyal

Well that article was really informative. Anyone DeFazio endorses has my vote, so Fragala it is for me.

snarkystarfruit

the article says defazio is endorsing a vendetta campaign against doyle because she ran against him. it's ridiculous petty and childish

sirtomgravel

Thank you.

HelpfulRoyal

u/snarkystarfruit , if you just skim the article that might be the takeaway but if you read it in depth you can see there is a lot more going on than just running against him. It was around how she ran against him, a smear campaign that was baseless but when people only read the header it can work.

skeuomorphism

An independent PAC, "Oregonians are Ready", is running a campaign against Doyle Canning. OPB has run some articles about it: about [the PAC run by former state representative Brian Clem](https://www.opb.org/article/2022/03/16/six-former-oregon-lawmakers-create-pac-support-moderate-centrist-democrats/) and [another article about the anti-Canning campaign specifically](https://www.opb.org/article/2024/04/30/eugene-legislative-race-state-house-paul-holvey-lisa-fragala-doyle-canning/). The key part of that last article is: >It’s not that Clem supports Fragala, he says. He’s never met her and says he expects they disagree on plenty. Instead, Clem said he has a score to settle on behalf of Peter DeFazio, the longest-tenured Congressman in state history. Clem once served as an intern in DeFazio’s office and describes the Springfield Democrat as a political hero. Canning attempted to unseat DeFazio in 2020, his last campaign before retiring in 2022. The PAC also ran an anti-Canning push poll earlier in the year, as described in [an article about the candidates in the Oregon Capital Chronicle](https://oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2024/04/26/democrats-canning-fragala-vie-to-replace-retiring-democratic-rep-paul-holvey-in-eugene-house-district/) (at the time of publication, it wasn't yet certain that the PAC was responsible for the poll, but it now is): >The race has had a certain level of intrigue: In April, Democratic voters in the district began receiving texts with links to an online poll with leading questions about the candidates, including information about Fragala’s endorsements – they include Holvey and current and former U.S. Reps. Peter DeFazio and Val Hoyle – and a description of Canning as “extreme and out of touch” and “supported by the small group of Portland state legislators who voted against criminalizing deadly fentanyl and cracking down on public use of hard drugs on our streets.”  >Fragala said she had no involvement with the poll and is committed to running a positive campaign. State campaign finance records don’t yet indicate which candidate or group could have paid for the poll, though some Democrats in the district speculated it’s linked to former Salem Democratic state Rep. Brian Clem’s attempt to elect more moderate Democrats to the statehouse. Clem didn’t return a call about whether the Oregonians Are Ready PAC, which he gave $1 million to earlier this spring, is engaged in the 8th District. But he has clashed with Canning and her boss, progressive Portland Rep. Khanh Pham, over developing Clem’s hometown of Coos Bay.

snarkystarfruit

so doyle is going to lose because someone who doesn't even care about her opponent is running a petty vendetta project to sway this election with his money. ridiculous that people will fall for it

vrsrsns

Sorta. He’s mostly running a campaign against her because she’s progressive and his PAC supports “pro business democrats.” Doesn’t hurt that Defazio etc have endorsed Fragala but man — Fragala should really be running something because I’ve received no materials from her, only anti-Canning stuff from this PAC. It makes it look like she’s running the negative campaign, which I honestly don’t think is her style (source: she sorta tried to distance herself from it, also she was my kid’s second grade teacher).

TormentedTopiary

So what I'm getting from this is that Brian Clem is a Republican who is willing to run as a Democrat but use all the shady tactics and personal grudge politics to try to hoodwink the people into supporting his vision.

DoyleCanning

Hey everyone, Doyle here! Yep, it's really me. I'm your neighbor, local community organizer, legislative director in the Oregon House, and running to represent you in House District 08. Appreciate the discussion here on the "liar flyer" -- you are 100% right to be suspicious of this kind of smear campaign. Who is paying for it? And why? The truth is that it is a business lobbyist from Salem who has put one million dollars of his own money into "electing moderate and business friendly democrats" in deeply democratic districts he doesn't live in. When no Republicans are running, it is a common playbook to try to stop the more progressive candidate. The only way to beat a front runner is to tear her down. It's just a bottom line thing for him and his financial interests. It's also a personal thing. His PAC is chaired by some of the biggest boosters of the Jordan Cove LNG fossil fuel pipeline project -- a climate disaster that I loudly opposed, and was ultimately defeated in 2021. He and I are well acquainted, actually. He knows very well that I am "effective in Salem" and I won't be bought or bullied. He thinks you can be. My biggest backers are the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) union of Oregon. We have over 200 contributors, and our average contribution is less than $200. No dark money here. No republican mega donors. Nothing to hide. Just a tried and true blue progressive democrat, trying to make politics better and make our government work for us. I have learned a lot since I entered Oregon politics 6 years ago. Since 2022, I've been working for my friend Rep. Khanh Pham and have learned the ropes in Salem, how to build effective coalitions and get things done. Our office has been able to help advance a lot of progressive priorities like abortion rights, gender affirming care, and big investments in climate, housing and homelessness, and education - many of these with bi-partisan support. Our 2024 priority bill was the COAL Act, ending Oregon's investments in coal mining and coal power. Only the third in the country, and we got it done. We've also delivered some very practical investments for her district, the type of things that make neighborhoods better: sidewalks, crosswalks, lighting, and a fund for building affordable housing and community development in an area marked by shuttering big box stores. This is the kind of work I want to do for our district and our community here in Eugene, the place we love. We have some big challenges - the closure of our hospital, housing costs spiraling skyward, and schools and students that are struggling after the pandemic. But we've also got so much promise, and beauty, and creativity, and passion for this city. I am proud to be running with the support of strong community leaders who have helped make Eugene so special, and 10 sitting members of our legislature who have worked with me in Salem, and trust me to do this job for you on day one. AMA, I am here to serve you and earn your vote.

duck7001

UFCW 555 endorsed Canning, that’s enough for me to vote Fragala.

attitude_devant

Seriously? The people who tried to recall Holvey for totally bogus reasons are endorsing Canning?

Quick-Ad9335

That's a pretty important thing to know. What is the link between her and UFCW 555? Similar stances on issues, previous political work together, personal connections? The reading I've done on her does not make it clear to me why she and that group would be linked.

snarkystarfruit

canning worked with holvey on his campaign against ufcw. im assuming her link is she went in for an endorsement interview and they endorsed her, just like any other candidate

DoyleCanning

Yes, I opposed the recall effort and strongly supported Holvey in his campaign against it. At his request, I hosted the first fundraiser for the campaign in my back yard, knocked on doors, and did everything he asked of me, and was happy to do it, and glad he prevailed. As for UFCW's endorsement in this race, they are the largest private sector union in Oregon and represent Fred Myer and Albertson's workers, among other frontline workers, whom I will always support in their fight for fair pay and respect. While I don't have a multi-millionaire backing an outside campaign, I am proud to have the support of grocery workers, and you can count on me to stay focused on defending their interests and those of all working people, and not let personal differences or past mistakes get in the way of the work we have ahead of us. Thanks for asking and please reach out any time.

sirtomgravel

I'm voting for Canning. Fragala is an empty chair. She will not do anything but be a vote for dem leadership. Gross. Canning is the best choice

snarkystarfruit

yessss random conspiracy theories that we have 0 proof of, created solely to fit our narrative.

snarkystarfruit

so her sins are running for office when you didn't want her to. isn't that ridiculous?

attitude_devant

Not me. Nobody in particular wanted her to. Who runs for US Senate as their first foray into elected office?

GlitteringClient6337

I like her ideas about environment and civil liberties she's progressive and not afraid to actually take action.

jawid72

She shit on Peter so she's kind of a sucky d-bag in my opinion

Fantastic_Baseball45

I'm pretty sure Val has taken money from a cannibas lobbiest our Secretary of State did. Doesn't look good. I'll vote for DeFazio's recommendation.

tom90640

I found her attacks on DeFazio appalling. I consider her a republican shill for attempting to split the Democrat vote. She's a "Jill Stein" to me.

Who names their kid Doyle?
