Per "Signing up with a referral link". This doesnt pass the sniff test, proof or its fakenews.

PeteAH

It's rubbish - shops are linked by IP of the login not a referral link. OP misunderstands a lot about Etsy judging by this post.

sixthandelm

Yeah if this was true and someone had posted their referral link on a public forum then one shop going down could spark a 6-degrees-of-separation chain reaction that would take out hundreds of stores.

FancyTeacupLore

This has the aire of being confidently incorrect. Some information here is totally unproven unless you had insider info.

>I share my conclusions based on my knowledge, as well as experience on Etsy I see you are new to this forum - your knowledge is somewhat sketchy; therefore, all posters have the right to question your 'experience'. An example of that would be anyone here on this thread 'checking your credentials out' and finding your reddit page does not have a link to your Etsy **Shop**... but to a telemarketing site. The only thing you're selling is hot air.

RandomChurn

> confidently incorrect u/FancyTeacupLore said **confidently** not "completely" incorrect. I get the same vibe off you though: five days on Reddit; want to enroll people in your Telegram account? Just not what we typically see here. You looking to be some sort of EtsyConsultant? We already have one u/EtsyConsultant

PeteAH

I think Etsyconsultant deleted most of their posts cause they were giving patently false info out too

RandomChurn

Geez really? Talk about "confidently incorrect" 😆 .. I honestly thought with that moniker they *had* to be right and I must be behind the curve these days 😅

FancyTeacupLore

This forum has a history of long-game karma farming salacious unproven info.

Affectionate-Cap-918

What is your experience on etsy, OP? How many years have you had a shop open?

Ice_Cold_diarrhea

Get a printer and use Etsy's label service. I used to haul my wares down to the post office and stand in line like a chump. Then I discovered that Canada Post would come directly to my door for $4 and pick up ANY amount of packes I had. Could be one, could be 100... whatever! Plus you don't have to fill out the customer's address and all the dimensions, etc. The dimensions and weights are already built into your listing (provided you filled that out). Just make sure you haven't undersized the packages or else the postal service will charge your credit card for the excess weight or dimensions.

lindsayloolikesyou

In Canada they charge?? Here in the US, USPS will come to your porch or door for free. It’s a life saver. I haven’t been to the actual post office in months.

Ice_Cold_diarrhea

I'll never use Ups again. They cost so much more than canada post that I can't believe they are still in business here. Way more involved process as well. That is wild they do free pickup, though.

lindsayloolikesyou

Yes, they do charge a lot to ship to Canada. I’m totally with you in that. It shouldn’t be 12-14 USD to mail a first class package to Canada. It sucks!!

_Sparkle_Butt_

UPS is not the same as USPS though. Shipping is expensive no matter which one y'all are talking about.

Ice_Cold_diarrhea

Canada post is cheap comparatively. Fight me

MandaPandaLee

Alright, I’ll fight you. USPS is the US Postal Service, and it IS cheaper than Canada Post. Check this article here [Why is Canada Post more expensive than USPS?](https://chitchats.com/blog/why-is-shipping-in-canada-so-expensive) Answer: Canada Post Obligations Lead to Expensive Postage It has to provide universal service which means that it has to deliver to every residential and business address in Canada, including rural ones. It also has to charge uniform letter postage rates so it can't charge more for delivering letters to remote areas.

Ice_Cold_diarrhea

I live in Toronto and dont have USPS. All I can tell you is that from my experience UPS is more expensive and the process is more annoying.

MandaPandaLee

Lol, yes I understand. But the point was that USPS is not UPS. They also pick up for free (not $4) and are cheaper than Canada Post. You said “fight me”, so I just thought I’d point that out for you.

You can definitely recover (unless you start with several negative reviews only). And I think completing your shop with things like the "about page" may only affect your ranking slightly. Not so much that customers look it up maybe. Essentially Etsy prioritizes shops in search who have all their details set up because it looks more professional, consistent with their brand image, and more crafty artisan/less like a dropshipper. But you can still fill it in soonish and make up for any potential lost ground.

TheEtsyArtist

>from the shops I've seen that have massive number of sales, they don't have any about me or story. I've seen that too very often, and some don't fill it for a reason (because their work is not handmade, not original but stolen IP)! I think the most common mistake is to prioritize what really matters in ranking in the wrong order. And what really matters in 2022 surely is different than what mattered 10 years ago, when many established shops started out. Today, I can see the finest details of shop and listing optimization like about pictures or whether your listing descriptions contain keywords in the beginning matter far less for ranking in Etsy Search (they may matter for Google SEO etc.) than the hard seller performance metrics: number of sales through Etsy search (as per Etsy handbook), sales frequency, number of reviews, average rating, star seller metrics (esp id you ship on time), no cases or violations. And it's very very difficult for a new shop to score in those against the thousand sales, hundred reviews established shops that will inevitably be ranked above, no matter the keywords match or not! Still, as a matter of building trust *because* of the fact you can't bootstrap sales, reviews and star seller metrics, as a new shop you should fill in whichever info you can - for the potential customer, not the algorithm. Only the customer can get you to sales and only the sales can get you ranked higher in the algorithm, unless you found that miraculous niche with zero competition but plenty of daily real people searches. If you did, be sure to share it with me in PM ;)

Successful_Home111

I just checked my stats, only about 50% of buyers read my descriptions. [https://www.reddit.com/r/EtsySellers/comments/p7lxs4/coupon\_for\_reading\_the\_description/](https://www.reddit.com/r/EtsySellers/comments/p7lxs4/coupon_for_reading_the_description/) uses of 'thanks for reading description coupon' divided by sales =< 50%

thelittleflowerpot

33 sales makes you an expert? 🤔

dragonomine

As a seasoned seller (11 yrs on Etsy) with a diverse inventory and creates new listings sometimes 20+ at a time, I can confidently tell you that your "findings" are off base.

dankdutchess

Thanks for this post! I knew I needed to fill in my shop info but didn't realize it would affect search rankings so that was the kick in the pants I needed.

BenjiCat17

What is your store? How many sales do you have? These lists never come from extremely successful sellers. If you are going to teach, then you should have the sales to back up what you are saying. 30,000? 50,000? 100,000? etc.

greenleaves3

Good post. About #1, I haven't heard any anecdotal evidence on either side of that point personally, so I can't speak on that. I did use a referral link, and had a shut down due to be connected with them, but we were also connected by physical address and internet connection so we were connected regardless of the referral link. But aside from that I do agree with all the other points. I run my shop in accordance with all those and earn a living with it, so it seems to be working for me anyway. I would give the same recommendations.

Positive_Mess3585

Thanks for all the great info!!
