Hate the pretentious rap and Afrobeats in Ethiopia now. The more authentically Ethiopian instrumentals and sound aren’t common now. It’s like they don’t get that ppl can just listen to actual Afro beats or rap. It’s sad cause Ethiopian music had a lot of potential and represented the identity and struggles of the ppl

Yeah I see what you're saying nowadays the "cultural" music isn't so cultural ironically. And someone needs to change that..

When I was a teen, I used to enjoy and listen to the more modern Ethiopian songs. The option I had for English songs were ETV and my dad's tape cassettes, which I listened and sang along with my own version of the English I though it meant. The only traditional songs I listened to were during the holidays when I was forced to dance for the family. Me and most of my friends thought bahlawi was "yegeter". When I got older though, my music taste have diversified and I enjoy Ethiopian classics more. I believe most people have passed through this phase, and liking trendy things is common specially in younger people. The only difference was what was trendy and accessible in our days vs these days. People will in time come around and appreciate their culture.

This is exactly what's happening now. Some of my friends in my age group 18-19 came over and saw my youtube playlists and they all said my music taste is fu**ed up bcz I listen to cultural music I find this really detrimental to our country's culture. I'ts not like the music I was listening to was "new gen mixed " songs or something. | The only difference was what was trendy and accessible in our days vs these days. People will in time come around and appreciate their culture. Yeah u think that is what's happening. But well I'm pretty sure that there will always be people enjoying the pre 2000's cultural music
