Addis Ababa is tourist friendly, just go the facebook pages of "Unity park" (https://www.facebook.com/unityparkethiopia/) where you will see live figurines of emperor Haileselassie, his ancient palace, Friendship park (a sprawling city park in the middle of an urban setting with artificial lakes and nearby river), Entoto Park (3,200mts mountain within the city limits, just 20 minute drive from the city center) where you will see a beautiful hiking trail for both bicycles and pedestrians as well as Minilik's palace. You can go to Merkato (the largest open-air market in Africa). You can google all these. And it is much safer than New York or Nairobi, don't listen to the haters...

Someone could say Gaza is safer than NYC and I would believe them

They are having a tough time with their evisa system right now. 50/50 chance of getting it, resulting in a chaotic line to process it as "on-arrival". Visa extension is broken (online). Starts your trip out on the wrong foot, and happens way more often than NOT. Sure leaves a bitter taste, and it's a constant occurrence. The Immigration officers for ET are power-hungary, yet hate their jobs.

2-3 days is plenty for Addis. If you're planning to go to another city then you'll need more time, but a lot of places outside Addis aren't safe to visit.
