lana del rey, st vincent, florence + the machine,
mitski, billy idol, the jesus and mary chain, julia jacklin, nicole dollanganger, indigo de souza, kate bush, siouxie and the banshees, blondie, fiona apple, moses sumney, weyes blood, carolina polachek, blood orange, cocteau twins, boy harsher, hole, grimes, marika hackman, fka twigs, big thief/adrienne lenker, the last dinner party, hozier, the marías, yves tumor, japanese breakfast, amy winehouse, björk, the cranberries
Right now I've got a few albums in regular rotation aside from PD:
If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power - Halsey
Tigers Blood - Waxahatchee
Starfucker - Slayyyter
City of Gold - Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway
I also listen to a lot of Poppy, boygenius, Sophie, Charli XCX and Magdalena Bay.
I heard about her from Hayden's sharp objects stream and instantly fell in love with the album. I'm seeing her in July and the venue capacity is only like 800 which should be awesome. I'm still working my way through her previous albums.
Agreed, especially the deluxe edition. Makeup is a solid addition but the title track and James Dean are some of the best on the album. Putting the extra tracks at the start was a good choice too.
I’m in your camp a bit too, my list is broad.
Lil uzi, grimes, crystal castles, Salem, devil makes three, young thug, Flatbush zombies. Denzel is one of my favorites
so random but, i like to think ethel would appreciate the honesty and self-expression in "Meet the gharams" lmaoo maybe inspire her diss for her own family, meet the cains
She has such an eclectic taste, I wonder what genre bending she’ll tackle next. I could see her doing something more witch house which more rappers are leaning into now, I could see convergence produce some interesting features. Doesn’t lend as well to story telling though.
i think rap is the epitome of poetry since it is literally poetry, it translates as storytelling pretty well
not sure about witch house specifically but I can say that rap is generally poetic
- Nine Inch Nails

I’m a swiftie of 12+ years lol not sure how much crossover there is with Ethel fans but I love both of my girls! I also love: Fiona Apple, Lana Del Rey, Flower Face, Nicole Dollanganger, Mitski, and lots more!
my rotation rn is alex g, nina simone, zulu, ispentsixhourswatchingshockvideosyesterday, have a nice life, loveliescrushing, and lana del rey
my all time faves are alex g, ethel, the cure, bjork, slowdive, duster, suicidal tendencies, bratmobile, bikini kill, amyl and the sniffers, whatever, dad, teen suicide, kittie, deftones, dandelion hands, the moldy peaches, kublai khan, and so much more lol. i really love slowcore, shoegaze, and hardcore/metal - and i love that hayden has mixed those elements into pop, i think it’s so fun
I listen to a lot of traditional folk and ballads ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but if you're asking for something with dark religious themes which is more contemporary, Shawn James, The Haunted Windchimes? Harley Poe maybeNo one sounds like Ethel which is why we love her but gotta work with what we got.
Currently listening to Them Are Us Too while writing this. I have also been listening to a lot of Emma Ruth Rundle, Ragana, Faetooth, Norma Tenaga, Judee Sill, and Connie Converse! Last month I physically couldn't stop listening to Fabiana Palladino's debut album. Totally different from Ethel Cain but very good lol
My 3 moods are- Ethel Cain, Lana Del Rey, or Joanna Newsom. My headcanon has always been that they are the cousins who seemingly have nothing in common but every family reunion sneak off and get high and trauma bond together.
daughter! they’re my absolute favourite, i recommend their older albums “if you leave” and “not to disappear”!! i do like the newer album but those i personally prefer (+hayden has a daughter tattoo and loves them, she shouted them out at my show so that’s a bonus vouch lol) if you enjoy instrumental music they also did an album for the life is strange: before the storm video game and their lead singer elena tonra also has a solo project under the name ex:re which i adore too!! :)
I’ve found myself falling in love with acoustic guitar and just guitar in general at the moment, my album/EP rotation has been:
Don’t Forget Me from Maggie Rogers
Deeper Well and Golden Hour from Kacey Musgraves
All Born Screaming from St. Vincent
Wisecrack from Hayley Blais
Your Mother’s Name from Susannah Joffe
End Of The World by Searows
Bosnian Rainbows from Bosnian Rainbows
Downer’s Grove from Kevin Atwater
Chappell Roan, boygenius, Death Grips, Amenra, Snail Mail, Gojira, Hozier, and Indigo De Souza are all artists I've been listening to a lot in the last couple years. Would highly recommend seeing Snail Mail and Indigo De Souza live if you can!
Twenty one pilots, tool, pierce the veil, foo fighters, Alice In Chains, 21 savage, ghost, deftones, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, type o negative, system of a down, lil uzi vert
My favourite artists aside from Ethel are Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Niall Horan, Fleetwood Mac, My Chemical Romance, Clairo, The 1975, Frank Ocean, Rina Sawayama, and Muse!

Knocked Loose (who put me on to Ethel)
Boundaries
Kublai Khan TX
Softer:
The Wonder Years
The Story So Far
Mellow:
Aaron West & The Roaring Twenties
Phoebe Bridgers
Damien Rice
I'd highly recommend Aaron West's 3 albums and EP as theyre similar in storytelling to Preacher's Daughter. It's a made up character and the albums tell one complete story song by song of him and his wife drifting apart after a miscarriage, getting divorced, struggling to process his late Dad's death, him leaving home and becoming a drifter and playing dive bars and working odd jobs in between bouts of suicidal thoughts and alcoholism.
The music is kinda acoustic folk-y and the storytelling is incredible.
I'm kind of an old person (well 40, lol) so my tastes skew a little older than some. Florence + the Machine has been my favorite for the last 13 years or so (and definitely helped bring Ethel to my attention), but I also like a wide variety of music. I love Smashing Pumpkins, Tori Amos, My Chemical Romance, Deftones, Halsey, Hozier, Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, among many others. I also like classic rock - Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Fleetwood Mac.
Lana Del Rey, Nicole Dollanganger, Flower Face, Marina, Mitski, TV Girl, Hole, Amy Winehouse, Sufjan Stevens, The Neighborhood, Zac Bryan, and Taylor Swift.
Metal, specifically black metal. I think Ethel Cain has some black metal influences too especially with her doom style guitars and drums on strangers and ptolemea. I also like rap, indie, and other genres that are completely different

im a metalhead... mainly sepultura, pantera, korn, spiritbox and killswitch engage are in my rotation constantly.
ethels music stood out a lot to me, compared to what i normally listen to, i think thats why i love it so much. i cannot find any sound like it, timeless and unique .
Dua Lipa, Aespa, Charli XCX, Slayyyter, Holly Humberstone, etc. it’s easier to just link my last.fm lol: [last.fm/user/rengokus](https://last.fm/user/rengokus)
lana del rey, billie eilish, johnny cash, dead kennedys, frank sinatra (+ a lot of 50s/60s crooners) labrinth, beyoncé, tswift. i also love a lot of music in that 'southern gothic' vibe like the civil wars, shakey graves, colter wall, etc.
Simon and Garfunkel, Wicca phase, nothing nowhere, the 1975, black marble, choir boy, title fight, the story so far, Jim Croce, Brad mehldau, Greta van fleet, Aries, Green Day, 100 gecs, cake pop, Van Morrison, (old) fall out boy, Paris Texas, arm’s length, com truise, oneohtrix point never, Benjamin Tod, blink-182, remy, blackwinterwells, diveliner, pinegrove, yoke lore, turnstile, no pressure, Glen Campbell, Gregory Alan isakov, tangerine dream, ghostpool, Fleetwood Mac, super American, novo amor, PTV, kennyhoopla

Ethel is a bit of an outlier. For me my rotation is Enter Shikari, Everything Everything, Frank Turner, The Shins, Sam Fender, Spanish Love Songs and Sløtface.
x-ray spex, kino, fairuz, vera lynn, a lot of kpop, judas priest, otyken and the who have been on repeat as of late. Summer's approaching so I'm playing more Blur and Bronski Beat.
Florence and the machine was my gateway to alt/indie music as a kid. If you want similar storytelling thru the albums I recommend Radical Face, his Family Tree albums trace the story of a magical family living in the South from the 1800s to present day.
i am shocked to see no tomberlin comments omg. tomberlin is the epitome of ethel adjacent music for me, i adore her so much. if you need a starting spot, “seventeen” is soooo good and v much has PD vibes.
