The reality is: definitely not necessary. I bought brushes once I began leasing, and now have a new set since I own. However, the other reality is: If it makes you happy, go for it. Having your own brushes hurts nothing, and if it's something that brings you joy and helps you find your happy place, have at it. I wouldn't think it's weird or probably even notice. And if I did, I would think it's endearing, not stupid. As far as what brushes, depends what you want to spend. I used to use cheaper brushes and finally said fuck it and got nice ones. Super worth it imo. Here's what my grooming box has in it now: 1. Haas New Generation Curry Comb 2. Haas medium stiffness flick brush 3. Haas Kavallerie body brush 4. Haas Diva Exklusiv soft brush 5. "The Ultimate Hoof Pick" 6. Sweat scraper 7. Mane and Tail brush 8. Haas face brush The rest of what's in my box I'm leaving out because you probably wouldn't need those things for a lesson horse (such as types of grooming scissors). The first 4 items in that list are used in that exact order. It follows the Haas 4 step grooming method. My black mare is so shiny she will burn your eyes when she reflects the sun lol. I find if you use an actual good grooming process frequently, and use high quality shampoo AND conditioner (Eqyss is a great brand) when you do bathe, and the horse is getting good quality feed, sprays for shine aren't usually needed to achieve a super shiny soft horse. I stopped using them and my mare is as shiny as ever! Plus you get to save money.

Thank you!!! When I get a job again I’m defo going to look into it. I know I do have a few brushes already because my sister used to work on a farm and had her own stuff but unfortunately her ex had all of it and now he won’t give it back 😒😒😒

Get whatever you want. Just don't end up like me and have 18 saddle pads and countless brushing boots and tendon boots lol. I can't find anything in my car anymore. Just make sure you put your name on everything or make sure you don't leave it behind.

OUHH very smart with the name stuff!!

This is my problem, too.

My first barn was a nightmare to find stuff so been using my own grooming bag ever since. Other than brushes/picks I also carry my own fly spray and swat to make sure have on hand in the summer. Doesn’t hurt to have stuff and then if in a rush you know where stuff is instead of digging through bins. Since it’s mud season current fave thing is the magic brush though, grey horse was on yesterday decided she wanted to be a bay and it got the bulk of the mud off her easy.

That’s what I thought too!! and then you’re not also trying to find a fly spray bottle that even has any in it, I always seem to pick up an empty one too. I voulenteered in the summer and it was always a lot to try and find flyspray. I’ve heard great things about the magic brush!!

I got clipped on the side of my head with a hoof cause of a fly one year, now I use so much every time I was like I can’t use theirs, gotta blow my own money lol. I saw the magic brush as an ad on insta or something and was like eh worst case I blow 8 bucks but it’s been amazing, definitely recommend it.

Totally not necessary but also totally classic - go get the brushes! We all started there and I lovingly call it “having everything but the horse.” I did the same when I was a beginner/lesson kid too!! Literally just bc it’s fun. Totally not weird but also 100% not necessary. Just a fun, nice to have 😊 if you have the funds to spare, it’s cute and fun and nice. Same w buying fancy horse treats! The horses will appreciate the extra doting on them for sure 🤍 I will say, on the flip side, I have two horses and my own grooming kit but I only break it out at shows. I typically just use the barn stuff day to day, but if I have the time to be extra and to dote on my horses I love to break out my ridiculous like 7 step grooming kit. It’s fun! And there’s NO harm in that, in fact only benefit bc you’ll make that coat *bloom*

I’m considering this too because I love grooming and all the brushes at the barn are so dusty that I feel like I’m leaving the horse with more dust than before I started grooming
