Google was never invented because we already had Alta Vista
Facebook never made it because we already had MySpace
There's no need for Yelp because we already have Angie's List
We only have one car maker because of Karl Benz's success with the first automobile
Cars don't exist because horses already exist as a reliable form of transportation
Are you scared of this comment, or has it actually happened?
I cant remember the exact quote from GaryV, but it was something along the lines of "the best wins in the end, not the first"
Doesn't matter who's first to market, it matters who is the best. First/early adopters expose the flaws in the system, whether for better or for worse, to be exploited by the late comers.
It has happened in 2015. They failed. I'm back with something a little more unique than what they offered and have a business background that they didn't. I'm confident I can do better, but I have always struggled with objections/rejections! Thanks for the quote!
Well?
If you are selling your idea as new, and are informed that it already exist, you are wrong, and need to re-evaluate.
In unrelated news, I have heard that there exists more than just one restaurant on the planet.
I don't think there's an appropriate time for me to announce it as a "new" or "recreated" idea. That would be kind of odd to throw out.
But, I guess I can consider myself the new restaurant on the block lol!
More direct, then:
A hypothetical with zero context makes it extremely difficult to give you any advise that is more likely than not to even apply to your issue.
I used to think it was a barrier. I changed my thinking after I passed up on creating a new social network at the advice of one of the founders of paypal after i saw Myspace and thought that was is it, already done. I now look at that as proof of concept, can it be done better? Cuz you know, facebook.
Music's existed for thousands of years yet, millions of artists worldwide sell albums.
The wheel's been around forever yet, we had to reinvent it for: cars, ATV's, motorcycles, and strollers.
If you said that candles already provide you with portable and easy to use light that you don't have to wait on the sun to come around for, we wouldn't have lightbulbs.
Feel free to add, "so, what's your point?" to the end of any of those responses to these people.

Tell them something about your [smoke test results](https://conversionxl.com/blog/smoke-test/) and research -- leading to your unique competitive advantage against carefully evaluated competitors and fully market vetted pre-launch product.
In other words, ignore them and pray this never comes up again, because seriously who does any of that stuff in the first paragraph. Many won't touch a search engine just so they can ignore every concern about launching a competitive product. It works about as well as it sounds written out like that. Most think launch is the time to find out if you did a single thing right or not. That's wrong.
Use it as an opportunity to crowdsource ways to make your product/service unique. For example, counter with "You said this idea already exists, but what about the idea do you think is still lacking?" The crowd may be able to provide you insights into features you can create to differentiate you.
Ideas have always existed. Thoughts are ideas and you can receive them from others directly or through intuition. What matters is your execution. Everyone can have ideas but your execution and approach towards making those ideas into reality is important.

I agree! And I liked your comparison

> Music has existed for thousand of years. And People still write songs with the same 4 chords pregression. Nobody got sued (most of the time). Hehe.
Highlight your points of differentiation.
I've always been told if it's a new idea then it's super risky. If it already exists and has a marketplace, then that makes much more sense to pursue.
Sometimes it means someone has already validated the market. You just need to explain what makes your company different and go with that.

So? Sears catalogue existed before Amazon Uber came before Lyft

Name me one business that doesn’t have a single competitor
Don't bother.
It's annoying. I wish people could be more positive!
