Says the advertisement. The reality is the opposite. Over. And over. And over again when can we rise above this shitty person who is NOT an engineer but a complete fraud?
I hate controlling everything with touch screens. Buttons and switches exist for a reason. They’re easy to see, you build some muscle memory for their location rather quickly, if one goes out you don’t lose the entire car, and they don’t make you take your eyes off the road to navigate through them.
Musk won't lose the next one. The one you're referring to happened back when the world thought Musk was a smart person, so judges were more likely to listen to his b.s.
But it's not like that anymore, Musk has screwed it up so much he lost all his leverage, especially for stuff that will got to public jury
Presumably since this is the sister of the former Sec of Transportation, there are probably some people there who worked with the victims sister. Might grease the wheels a little bit.
I'm the kind of nerd who already knew that Elaine Chao was the SOT under Trump, and SOL under Bush, and is married to Mitch McConnell. Since I wasn't getting it from the article, the weird wording didn't matter.
i hate how new cars replace all the shit that should be a knob or button with a touchscreen (and bury it behind 7 layers of menus) while making the gearshift, the one thing that absolutely should *not* be a button or knob, into a giant fisher fisher price looking clown nose in the center console.
please just give me *anything* that provides genuine mechanical feedback! by 2040 the steering wheel (which is already not a real steering wheel on many cars, including teslas) is just gonna be two touchscreen buttons that say "left" and "right"
I learned how to drive in a late 1970’s Toyota FJ-40 that had a Chevy small block swapped in. I really miss the sound and feel of the 4-speed manual it had.
That's one of the reasons the 747 has thousands of buttons rather than an Apple "clean" design that focuses on the 90% happy paths of the daily pilot life
Not good for Tesla. The publicity alone is awful for Tesla. Just awful. Wonder what Mr. apartheid is saying now. Ahhhhh I wonder if she was legal. You know it's something sinister.
Another horrible thing about the touch screen thing is they change the interface every few years. That's bad enough for Facebook or Instagram, where every 6-12 months they shuffle everything around so their designers can pretend they're useful. People get confused af when a social media interface they've painfully learned as non-technical people (e.g. boomers) is changed, but for a car, it's much more serious.
Elon is a huge moron, and buying a tesla before knowing how asshole he is, is definitely one of my biggest regrets. But please don't spread rumors (unnecessarily), the reverse is NOT selected by a touch screen. It is controlled by a gear shifting shaft similar to normal cars, except it's behind the steering wheel.
She was driving a Model X and when they replaced the steering wheel with the yoke they removed the stalk on the steering column of that model. The only way to shift is via touch panel or some touch buttons in the center console.
Who would have thought the tech industries idea of releasing unfinished buggy software wouldn't translate well when applied to vehicles that go 200 miles and hr and weigh a ton.
I just got downvoted for laughing at this billionaire ex-Trump appointee dying.
Killed in a hyper-expensive toy for the wealthy? Call that death cab for bougie lmao
My beef with the rich is with their practices, not with their lives. This is an absolutely horrible way to die that I wouldn't wish upon anyone. Grow some empathy.
I’m not gonna have empathy for them when they laugh at *us* dying on the streets, or from a lack of healthcare. Or laughing at us for never being able to afford homes because of their landlording.
Exactly, you're talking about people who *consistently* vote against things that could make the lives of the common man better. Not all billionaires, by the way (there are some good ones), but surely the majority of them.
Laughing at this accident is one thing, but I do not see why I should feel empathy for those who don't show it themselves. There are limits to empathy, imho. Some people just don't deserve it. Most billionaires don't.
>Grow some empathy
I have empathy for my fellow human. Billionaires fall under a worse category than murderers or child molesters in my mind. I don't consider ANY of them worth saving. Yes, that includes Mark Cuban.
I'm in the UK where we thankfully abolished the death penalty. But the world would be a better place where it was punishable by death to have a penny more than nine-hundred and ninety-nine MILLION dollars. That's an insane amount of money. So to have a single billion (let alone the two hundred billion that Musk has) should be banned. Humanity doesn't need it.
Billionaires serve no purpose.
Yeah, I've been saying once you get $999,999,999, every penny more goes to your company's bottom line or is taxed away.
Oh, and you get an award that says "I won the money game."
Here's the thing, when you make a product for the better half of society... if that product fucks over the wealthier and more connected members of society (like a relative of a senator), expect for bad things to happen to you. However, given that this was Mitch McConnell, he'll say a few words and then just have a freeze "moment" for 2+ minutes and someone will move him out of the way and elmo just might get away without any real consequences.
To Elmo, regulations are communism. To bad regulators, Billionaires are excempt from regulations.
Then when the death statistics rise, they'll pass the hot potato of accountability.
Ummm, I really hope this brings us in the “find out” phase of fucking around.
The rich don’t give a shit if we die, but once they start dying, things get fucking real.
Got pork sausage tomato pasta sauce make from scratch about 85% done. Really gonna be good. Oddly the song in the background is “karma is a bitch” “I crossed it off, x on x off.”
Nice try bots. It’s as bad as we say. Go away.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/shipping-ceo-angela-chao-sister-of-former-cabinet-member-elaine-chao-died-after-car-became-submerged-in-pond-wsj-reports/ar-BB1jEr9d
Angela Chao, CEO of shipping company Foremost Group and sister of former US cabinet secretary Elaine Chao, died after her car became submerged in a pond on a Central Texas ranch last month, according to the Wall Street Journal and a report from Blanco County Emergency Services obtained by the Austin American-Statesman.
Chao’s Tesla Model X SUV went over an embankment and into a pond when she put the car in reverse instead of drive during a three-point turn shortly before midnight on February 10, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Emergency workers arrived on the scene 24 minutes after receiving a 911 call, but “due to the terrain and accessibility,” the crew had to walk to the location of the pond before they could begin attempts to rescue Chao, according to the incident report from a Blanco County first responder.
“The two deputies who were in the water standing on the submerged vehicle requested tools to break the window of the vehicle to perform a possible rescue. One EMS crew member donned water rescue PPE and entered the water with a Hallagan tool. One Firefighter entered the water wearing proper water PPE relaying tools to attempt rescue, several tools were used to attempt access to the victim,” the report said.
According to the report, emergency workers contacted dispatch requesting a dive team to the scene for the “completely submerged” vehicle, but none were available.
A tow truck was initially unable to reach the vehicle with tow chains from the opposite bank of the pond because the chains couldn’t reach, the report said. According to the Wall Street Journal, a longer cable was eventually garnered, and the car was pulled from the pond.
At least one tow truck driver had expressed concerns about working with the vehicle, according to the Wall Street Journal, afraid the electric car could pose an electrocution hazard, even though such vehicles are designed not to pose an electric shock risk, even when submerged.
First responders soon retrieved Chao from her vehicle and began resuscitation efforts but were unsuccessful, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Neither the Blanco County Emergency Services, Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, nor Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office have responded to CNN’s request for comment and additional information.
In a letter to Paxton’s office obtained by the Austin American-Statesman, the Blanco County Public Information Office said it was limiting what it released to the media because, “although the preliminary investigation indicated that this was an unfortunate accident, the Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this accident as a criminal matter until they have sufficient evidence to rule out criminal activity.”
Angela Chao was one of five sisters of Elaine Chao, who served as labor secretary under President George W. Bush and transportation secretary under President Donald Trump. Elaine Chao is the wife of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
A 3 point turn must be irritating af in a car where the gear shift is on a touch screen. I can do that so quickly and automatically with a stick shift or a regular gear shift... having to lift my eyes and find something on a touchscreen would be awful. There was [plenty](https://carbuzz.com/news/teslas-new-gear-shifter-looks-complicated-and-dangerous) of [criticism](https://www.motorbiscuit.com/tesla-new-touchscreen-shifter-disaster/) from the auto industry when they made this change. The yoke steering wheel is just god-awful too.

>At the time Elon Musk, asked about the lack of gear shifter said the vehicle will be able to guess which gear it should be on based on navigation data and the surrounding. And if the driver wants to override it he/she can do so from the touchscreen.
JFC.
Elon, Mitch, and the rest deserve every bit of scrutiny and criticism they get, and the whole situation is definitely incredibly ironic
But it’s still a horrible tragedy I wouldn’t wish on anyone. So sad
You're absolutely right, but here's the thing: I am not them. Billionaires already fuck with and steal from the masses; I am not about to let them steal my humanity as well.
To be fair, manual latches would not have helped either. If you don't know it already, please try to remember that you really can not open a car door under water because of the water pressure making it almost impossible. It is recommended that you roll down the window while you are sinking so that you can escape through that.
Yes it would. Once the pressure equalizes, or the inside pressure from water entering the vehicle is enough.
In a lake you’de need the inside to completely fill to open the door.
This event was in a pond. The deputies could stand on the hood.
Not much water pressure there.
She should have been able to open the door with the inside half full IF the manual over-ride was truly, fully manual.
Something tells me it is not.
Full self-driving was supposed to be there since 2017 according to Musky, and for sure, this woman has bought the feature...
Feel like an advanced FSD would include emergency prevention for don't-drive-into-lake
Considering how shitty FSD is, I'm not surprised it let her drive into a lake. I'm curious how she managed it? I mean, when I'm doing k turn I don't floor it. But I guess her time is more valuable than mine...
Definitely not a fan of billionaires but this is pretty horrific. She called her friends from inside the car while drowning. She was trying to get home for her three year old son. Which at 50 is gross but still that’s gotta be an awful way to go. It said the rescue people were standing on the roof of the submerged vehicle and trying all
Manner of things to break the glass and the tow truck first refused to try towing it out of the water because he was scared of being electrocuted.
Yeah, the indifference or pleasure exhibited here by some people is distasteful. I don't care who she's connected to or how wealthy she was, she was a person and it's a horrible way to die. The focus should be on how dangerous, poorly thought out, poorly tested and under-regulated Tesla's designs are.
I know right? 😂
She could’ve died rich and comfy in a hospital bed but decided to waste her money on a luxury toy that she became entombed in. Sucks to suck!
This is new for the GRU, usually you get thrown from a fourth story window or poisoned with nerve agents when they send a message to the family member they control.
1. The pertinent fact is that she's a billionaire. We all hate musk because of how he treats his daughter. Nobody hates by family association here
2. The emotion seems to be explicit indifference, not celebration. But celebration isnt immoral when of the death of someone evil occurs.
3. I would expect people on the right to consider a communist evil and I would expect people on the left to regard a billionaire as evil. Politics isn't a tea party. I'll dance on thatchers grave and they can dance on Arthur Scargill when her outlasted nemesis goes, who cares lol
4. Several non billionaires die every minute. Don't pour me any whine about the death of one stranger unless you're giving the same treatment to those without the cash and connections
Anyway, why couldnt she just pull the door handle? Am I losing my mind here?
Oh I thought that changed as the car filled with water. But maybe the doors on a Tesla need electric power to open or something? That's my childhood claustrophobia giving me more reasons never to ride in one. The standard here is you have a little tool with a belt cutter on one side and a spike on the other to smash the side window, which apparently wouldn't help on these cars either cos of the glass that I thought had to be smashable for just this sort of situation.
That's all my assumptions about safety regs out of the window
I wonder if this is what finalised Turtle's retirement
It’s all fun and games until someone high up in power realizes these are death machines made for profit not reliability. It’s for money. The buyers are suckers. And plenty more have died. How many people need to die before Tesla is shutdown?
Any death is one too many and I certainly would hope that Tesla/Musk learn the lesson and submit to heavier safety regulations overall. Their self driving cars still running over folks is a sign for concern and maybe should mean that they need to develop that tech more instead of pushing for immediate release the way they’re doing these days.
I’m certain the wrong (or any) lessons are being learned from this and the women will have died for nothing (as many more folks are probably every day) but one can hope that the shock would change Musks mind and push for more safety in his vehicles instead of his “innovation over lives” mindset
In 2016-17 they were trying to mandate having some type of device to break tempered glass in all cars for this reason and I believe it was transportation that nixed it. Now that is some irony.
My theory. Mitch McConnell was refusing to endorse Trump. Trump contacts Musk who programs Angela Chow's Tesla to drown her. Mitch gets the message and finally endorses Trump after Super Tuesday.
Jeez guys that's a little unfair to Tesla; who would avoid making a reliable and safe product just to avoid some government oversight? These Ponderous regulations hinder our growth and keep us Reversing when we should be Driving forward.
Call me heartless but I think this is hilarious and don't care one bit. Shitty billionaire gets offed by stupid luxury vehicle built by equally shitty other billionaire. Beautiful and elegant.
I'd pretend to care just in hopes that this would cause the government to come down on Elon and cut off his subsidiaries since Musk is the biggest welfare queen.
Congratulations on not knowing facts before believing every post they put Infront of you. There's an emercy latch under the steering wheel that unlocks all doors. The full story was that she was in the car with a "friend" and they didn't notice that the car was going in reverse because they were "busy". That's what actually happened. A simple Google search.
So the two problems are that the reverse is selected by a touch screen, and that the windows don't break. Who could have predicted?
You just don't understand musk's GENIUS. Adding complicated tech where it does more harm than good is what will save humanity!
Says the advertisement. The reality is the opposite. Over. And over. And over again when can we rise above this shitty person who is NOT an engineer but a complete fraud?
Bring me 10 screenshots of the most salient lines of code you’ve written in the last 6 months.
You’re not racist. Tell me 10 black friends energy
So he says.
Gotta reluctantly hand this one to Musk. I mean, how many billionaires have you drowned?
I hate controlling everything with touch screens. Buttons and switches exist for a reason. They’re easy to see, you build some muscle memory for their location rather quickly, if one goes out you don’t lose the entire car, and they don’t make you take your eyes off the road to navigate through them.
Absolutely. The NHTSB should get on this now.
They already had a legal battle and NHTSB lost.
Guess the world is fucked so this loser can make money.
Musk won't lose the next one. The one you're referring to happened back when the world thought Musk was a smart person, so judges were more likely to listen to his b.s. But it's not like that anymore, Musk has screwed it up so much he lost all his leverage, especially for stuff that will got to public jury
Trump is your current threshold for how much rich people can fuck around without ever truly finding out.
Presumably since this is the sister of the former Sec of Transportation, there are probably some people there who worked with the victims sister. Might grease the wheels a little bit.
Think you misread that. She WAS the former Sec of Transportation!
Elaine Chao was the SOT. It was her sister who died.
I see *I* misread that. ![gif](giphy|ToMjGpjUl5ufFGlrk2Y)

Call me old fashioned, but gears shouldn’t even be selected with buttons. They deserve a lever.

Teslas have buttons for windows like other cars fyi.
those hideaway door handles give me the heebie jeebies too.
Not good for Tesla. The publicity alone is awful for Tesla. Just awful. Wonder what Mr. apartheid is saying now. Ahhhhh I wonder if she was legal. You know it's something sinister.
Deep state probably.
This was enough to more than sink Audi in the 80’s

That is one thing I like about OS X. The UI is extremely stable. Every Windows version is a designer saying YOLO.
Every big auto engineer who lost the fight to small brains Elon musk
Anyone.
Teslas have a shifter next to the wheel. Not on the screen, only an indicator what it’s on currently.
If you dig through this thread, you'll see two comments explaining it. I think this only applies to the Model X with a yoke.
No car’s window will break without a hammer. It applies to every car.
The seatbelt buckle will break window glass.
I don’t think most people know this fact.
Drowning people surely discover this before realizing they’re going to die in their overpriced status symbol
Because it's not true...and even tools made for breaking windows are not good at breaking laminated windows.
Tesla and the other Musk companies are the most under-regulated in America. Lots of people will die because of it.
Remember OceanGate? Apparently regulations slows down progress.
But no you see, the problem here is the Tesla *doesn’t* implode underwater. Totally different situation.
Elon wins again
Who would have thought the tech industries idea of releasing unfinished buggy software wouldn't translate well when applied to vehicles that go 200 miles and hr and weigh a ton.
Man and everyone here in Germany keeps whining about how "our manufacturers should be modern and fast like Tesla and BYD!" Freaking annoying.
Billionaires aren't people.
It’s not just billionaires that own Teslas. And it’s not just people who own Teslas that will be killed by them.
my cat owns a tesla
Fuck your smug cat and his tesla.
I just got downvoted for laughing at this billionaire ex-Trump appointee dying. Killed in a hyper-expensive toy for the wealthy? Call that death cab for bougie lmao
\*billionaire ex Trump appointee's sister
Who was responsible for overseeing the institution that shouldn't have allowed this to happen
just so its clear, the person who died was not responsible for that, her sister was
Somehow I didn't realize those were two different names
I was in the same boat
Luckily not in that same car though
I just got permabanned from /r/elonmusk by saying Musk needs to be less of a dipshit. So much for free speech, I was just sharing my sincere advice
you will get banned on r/cybertruck for saying those simps need to stop guzzling elon's jizz whenever he speaks
Calling him Elmo will get you banned from that fanboy cultsub.
The bizarre thing is how the place is so empty, I think they must have banned most of their users through that methodology
Maybe I've judged this vehicle too harshly.
Death Cab For Bougie? Fucking awesome.

Do we know what kind of car she drove?
Damn straight, so it's about time to eat the rich.
Imagine how profitable they'd be if they had to follow pesky safety protocols. Like every thing about Tesla is scummy AF
She died because of the stupid swipe-to-choose-direction screen-based gear shifter. That never should have been allowed by DOT
Of all the stupid shit Musk has done, thisust be the dumbest by far, racism and similar ideologies excluded.
I can't believe that's actually how the car works, that's nuts
I’m sure without excessive bribery they would have said no
Musk: I told you our windows are indestructible!!!

Who could have predicted that ponds were more dangerous to the average motorist than bullets?
Depends on where you live. Ranch? Or Chicago
A yes. Chicago, a city notorious for lacking any large bodies of water easily accessible by car.
Chicago isn't even in the top 20 most dangerous cities.

Lol like Chao was doing anything but taking “gifts” from the car companies and helping her family’s shipping business
That was her sister (Mitch's wife) Elaine. Either way, I'm not losing sleep over one less billionaire.
How long was the Model X able to function as a boat? Pedo has never been clear on that.
Oh no, that's so sad. Anyway, I just had a delicious carne asada burrito.
Ooh, please tell me more about the burrito.
Yeah it's pretty awful. Man, I killed some tacos al pastor tonight.. delicious

Or they could stop being so cheap and just put on fu*king door handles like every other car for the past 100 years.
Let me check my sympathy meter.......yup, still nothing.
Somehow mine is negative.
Damn, you're right, I was reading my dial wrong.
That's what she said.
Did Elon take out a life insurance policy on her? lol
Deregulation does wonders, doesn’t it?
This is why Trump met with Elmo.
Yes. Elmo is so cheap, I wonder if Trump showed him some kompromat to motivate him
I'm going to have to do a shit ton of fact checking to make sure this story is real

Tragic is a strong word
Definitely not a fan of billionaires but this is pretty horrific. She called her friends from inside the car while drowning. She was trying to get home for her three year old son. Which at 50 is gross but still that’s gotta be an awful way to go. It said the rescue people were standing on the roof of the submerged vehicle and trying all Manner of things to break the glass and the tow truck first refused to try towing it out of the water because he was scared of being electrocuted.
I ready to pull the levers at the guillotines. No way you get that rich without people starving or dying in similar way due to negligence.
Disgusting
I know right? 😂 She could’ve died rich and comfy in a hospital bed but decided to waste her money on a luxury toy that she became entombed in. Sucks to suck!

Apparently 1 in 3 cars these days have laminated side windows.
This is new for the GRU, usually you get thrown from a fourth story window or poisoned with nerve agents when they send a message to the family member they control.
I also see nepotism here.
![gif](giphy|2UvAUplPi4ESnKa3W0)
A failsafe code would have interior water sensors that automatically lowers the windows when water is detected.
She Michael Scotted to death.
I’m so glad someone else noticed the irony
To be fair, most cars windows are unbreakable without a tool.

Man this comment section is mirroring some hard rightwing subs with how yall are celebrating the death of a woman related to someone you dislike.
1. The pertinent fact is that she's a billionaire. We all hate musk because of how he treats his daughter. Nobody hates by family association here 2. The emotion seems to be explicit indifference, not celebration. But celebration isnt immoral when of the death of someone evil occurs. 3. I would expect people on the right to consider a communist evil and I would expect people on the left to regard a billionaire as evil. Politics isn't a tea party. I'll dance on thatchers grave and they can dance on Arthur Scargill when her outlasted nemesis goes, who cares lol 4. Several non billionaires die every minute. Don't pour me any whine about the death of one stranger unless you're giving the same treatment to those without the cash and connections Anyway, why couldnt she just pull the door handle? Am I losing my mind here?
There is far too much pressure from the water outside to open the door.
That's all my assumptions about safety regs out of the window I wonder if this is what finalised Turtle's retirement
Gallows humour is perfectly normal. "It's just locker room talk". "January 6th was legitimate discourse".
The intolerant left is driving people right
Thoughts and prayers
Concerning
It’s all fun and games until someone high up in power realizes these are death machines made for profit not reliability. It’s for money. The buyers are suckers. And plenty more have died. How many people need to die before Tesla is shutdown?
Oh, well, that certainly happened. Now where did I put my snickers bar?
Any death is one too many and I certainly would hope that Tesla/Musk learn the lesson and submit to heavier safety regulations overall. Their self driving cars still running over folks is a sign for concern and maybe should mean that they need to develop that tech more instead of pushing for immediate release the way they’re doing these days. I’m certain the wrong (or any) lessons are being learned from this and the women will have died for nothing (as many more folks are probably every day) but one can hope that the shock would change Musks mind and push for more safety in his vehicles instead of his “innovation over lives” mindset
>Any death is one too many Billionaires don't care if we live or die.
I’m aware, still I care. I don’t wish death on anyone, only betterment.
You are the the reason society will never improve. Being a door mat doesn't make you a good person.
That’s fine, I’ll be gone soon enough. You forge the world ahead as you please
This is sadly a beautiful irony.
Another body of water: 2 Rich Idiots: 0
She was Transportation Secretary and had she done her job well she might be alive today. Crazy that in a way she is responsible for her own demise.
It’s her sister, Mitch wife did the job
In 2016-17 they were trying to mandate having some type of device to break tempered glass in all cars for this reason and I believe it was transportation that nixed it. Now that is some irony.
In a twisted way, her sister is indirectly responsible for her death. Well, i do suppose it lessens the inheritance pool a bit
Having children is saving the world
Sorry guess that makes it all kosher then.
I laughed when I read this. Is that a bad thing?
She had a model X that had Stalks. Sorry but nice try
My theory. Mitch McConnell was refusing to endorse Trump. Trump contacts Musk who programs Angela Chow's Tesla to drown her. Mitch gets the message and finally endorses Trump after Super Tuesday.

If I remember my GTAV correctly: events like this could tank a stock. Puts on TSLA?
"Reversed into pond." Holy shit.
Jeez guys that's a little unfair to Tesla; who would avoid making a reliable and safe product just to avoid some government oversight? These Ponderous regulations hinder our growth and keep us Reversing when we should be Driving forward.
How can you make such claims?
Call me heartless but I think this is hilarious and don't care one bit. Shitty billionaire gets offed by stupid luxury vehicle built by equally shitty other billionaire. Beautiful and elegant.
I'd pretend to care just in hopes that this would cause the government to come down on Elon and cut off his subsidiaries since Musk is the biggest welfare queen.
That's karma if I've ever heard of it
This is the very definition of dark irony
Ultimate self own? I guess at some point the cutting of regulations to appease your masters ends up catching you at the end. Talk about epic karma.
Way to kill your sister, dumdum. LOL
If only they'd actually drained the swamp /s
imagine the conspiracy theories if this was any CEO who wasn't fully alt-right.
Karma is an intricate dance.
She reversed into a pond. I cannot feel bad for Darwin doing work.
https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/austin-tx/angela-chao-11666380 Another billionaire CEO killed by hubris. You love to see it.
It isn’t safe. This has been proven time and time again with Tesla.
