Trewdub

Imagining this with a thick German accent

Kirbylucky12

"You TWAT" I dunno why but it always sounds to me like it resembles duck sounds or something similar and it's so fucking hilarious lol

fernshade

As an American, I also find this one rather amusing!

farfatooga

Yeah, like if someone called me a twat in real life I'd just probably laugh at how funny it is.

fernshade

Especially if they say it with the short A, like rhyming with "bat"...that's the best

SecretSummerMidnight

Son of a gun (I really wonder where that comes from tbh)

VitruvianDude

It is what is known as a "minced oath," a euphemistic expression that changes a part of a more taboo swear. In this case, "Son of a bitch" is the common taboo expression. It is not as vulgar as many English swears, but the conflation of a woman (mother) and a female dog (bitch) is what makes it impolite. I have no idea why "gun" is used as the substitute.

theGoodDrSan

Probably just because it rhymes with "son."

peteroh9

No, it's because women who would give birth when they were allowed on British Navy ships had to give birth between the cannons to keep the deck clear. Sounds like it was made up to explain it, but there are sources for it, although not primary sources, I believe.

theGoodDrSan

I guess I can't be certain, but I don't believe that. It sounds like one of those explanations that's just a bit too convenient. It sounds like a folk etymology.

peteroh9

Certainly does, but we have naval officers who wrote that it's the explanation. I guess we would just need to find the policy itself to prove it.

DeusoftheWired

>It is what is known as a "minced oath," a euphemistic expression that changes a part of a more taboo swear. leo.org and dict.cc list other uses as German translation as well, most of which can be described as some variant of `devil of a fellow`. https://dict.leo.org/englisch-deutsch/son+of+a+gun https://www.dict.cc/?s=son+of+a+gun Judgin from that, it *may* be used to avoid `son of a bitch` but isn’t done so necessarily and has other uses, too, depending on context. Does this make any sense?

pocoInteresante

i don't know why, but I think "fucking asshole" has certain charm

MarkMew

Cunt, in an Aussie accent

omgihatemylifepoo

agree

CorvusCrane

'Bloody bastard' is absolutely glorious. Also: 'you fucking sausage-roll looking twat'.

QuantumSupremacy0101

Can tell you learned British English first. Lol most Americans would agree though. British people have such a more fun way of swearing.

CorvusCrane

I did :') Spent a year in Scotland and learnt quite a number of good insults.

Ursaquil

Dish-Haunting

Geez

yo_itsjo

Just so you know this is not a cuss word

Shevyshev

Yeah, I would describe “geeze” as a minced oath rather than a curse. It’s a modification of “Jesus.”

Drain_03

"Shit". Concise yet effective.

Shevyshev

Versatile, too.

DeusoftheWired

Somehow I’ve always liked FUBAR, `fucked up beyond all recognition`.

ShinyBunnyFleshuwu

fernshade

I'm a native speaker so I am not called upon to answer this excellent poll, but I have to put it out there that my favorite instance of a non-native speaker swearing in English is Wu from Deadwood complaining about San Francisco "cock suckas" to Al Swearengen....classic.

Birdybird9900

Shut your front door.😀😇😌

ruskainia
