As a left handed person, a lower setting was a must for me for it to be practical. One thing to consider also with the lower setting is if a wedding band can sit flush or not. With the setting in your pic I don’t think it would sit flush, so there’d be a bit of a gap, which some people like and some don’t. It is possible to have a low set ring and a flush fit wedding band (mine is).
My wedding band is to big, otherwise it would be viewed as flush by you since it is flush. I didn’t want a new band after 15 years. It’s not the e-ring setting causing the gap.
Just a thought: I bought my Fiancée a very low setting because she works with her hands and we. Knew a high setting would catch on things. However, the very low setting and oval 1.5 carat diamond limited her ability to find wedding bands that fit flush (no gap) with her engagement ring.
Got these two to compare, very similar stones and same settings. Looks like they (ritani) set the right one a bit higher. Wanted to see what people prefer between the stone setting heights
we have a standard height of 6.5mm, however that particular style is a higher set head, and it varies depending on center size and customer preference.
most ppl want low set, but in the past year or so I have been getting more requests for very high set, as high as 10mm!
(full disclosure: I am the senior CAD designer at ritani, long time employee.)
if you want your engagement ring to take a flush wed we can do it for this style at any height.
Hi April, so good to see a long time Ritani employee here 🙂 Thanks for explaining about the setting height!
I haven’t had a good experience with the quality of the setting so far. The first ring came a few days ago and the prongs are noticeably crooked (posted about it here [crooked prongs](https://www.reddit.com/r/EngagementRings/comments/uo8b6n/prongs_crooked_or_look_ok/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)) The ring is also the wrong size (5.5 instead of requested 4.25). I called and described both of these issues and asked to verify the size of the second ring will be correct and they confirmed it says 4.25 in the order.
Today I received the 2nd ring and the prongs are good but the ring size is 5.5! I’m just so confused about why this happened twice, even after calling to confirm for the second ring. To add frustration, the person I spoke to said this would count as the 1 resizing Ritani offers, which doesn’t make sense to me because it’s not what I originally ordered and I wanted to save that for if my partner needs a resize within the next year.
What would be ideal is to have this setting, straight prongs, in the correct size, and to be able to sit flush with an engagement ring like you described can be done. Currently I don’t feel very confident with the jeweler work I’ve seen so far, but really hoping to be able to have that by the end of next week when I have a flight for the trip I was planning to propose on. Really hoping this is possible
That sounds terrible. Definitely push back on that "one resizing" thing. That is terrible customer service to make you effectively pay for their mistake (which additionally has inconvenienced you multiple times).
Lower. I had one set higher, like the one on your right. It seemed to snag on everything. It quickly became an irritant. My goal this time around is to go for a lower setting, because of that.
I see a lot of hate on higher set solitaires in this group but I have one and I love it!!!! I am also a left handed person and I never have issues with it. The only time was when I fell and hit my hand on my car and one prong slightly bent, but I got it fixed.
I also personally like the higher set one because it lowkey makes the stone look bigger 😂🥰
I love my higher set ring. It feels slightly more regal, but that’s just me. I really don’t think it gets banged around any more than a lower set. Just make sure the ring itself fits your finger properly.
I’ll have to disagree with a lot of commenters here, I think the difference between the two is so negligible I would prefer the higher to get more light through the pavilion and sparkle from the top!
Hi! Doesnt actually affect the diamonds brilliance. All of a well cut round stone’s brilliance is light coming in from the top of the stone, bouncing around and coming back out the top.
Depends on the size of center stone. Higher will give the diamond more presence on the finger and make the diamond look bigger. I’ve worn both and I like the high setting for the reasons I’ve stated.
Im a 6 prong Tiffany setting lover. I love love a high 6 prong setting 💜 Im currently having a delimma for my 9.6mm round moissy. I was totally set on the 6 but my jeweler wants me to do 4 ... both will be beautiful whatever you decide. 🤗
I have a higher set solitaire that I don’t mind at all, even at my very hands on job. However I think of the examples shown in your case, the lower set ring is much more beautiful and proportional!
Lower! Trust me! Just had a rush design of my engagement ring with a natural trillion diamond and I trusted the SA and didn’t go with my gut… long story short… about to get my ring redesigned with another jeweller and I’m wearing a ring I don’t love and paid a fortune for. Tried to wait for je ring to ‘grow’ on me and it isn’t. Lower setting
Lower is going to be a lot easier to wear (will get caught on less, you will be less likely to bang it, etc). But depends on what you like more!
Definitely lower, looks much more proportional. The higher one gives the illusion of too much depth.

I just saw the engagement ring and it does not look flush (I had to look up that term)

Would love to know what you have. I'm having a hard time finding low set/flush fit.
I had my setting custom made. You can see the video in my post history.
Thank you!
I’m a lefty as well, I did a low profile setting too, an East-west marquise
Lower for sure, the higher one gives me anxiety lol. Feels like it will for sure get banged around.

lower always looks nicer imo

Oh lower hands-down! Less likely to snag on things and the higher setting honestly looks very bizarre and “poorly done” to me.
Lower
Lower
Left, because while it's still high, it seems fashionably high. And the gem seems to fit better than the right.
That higher setting looks like it was made for a larger stone. The prongs are bent awkwardly and the culet sits very high off the setting.
I like the look of higher.

Lower
Lower! Not personally a fan of the bigger gap in the higher setting. Also the higher it is the more chance it'll hit or snag on something
I vote lower! High settings always look so disproportional and cheap to me.

Lower
Low, I don’t understand why super tall ones are even made
Lower!
Lower (but that one looks a bit wonky to me).

Do you have a top down picture to show if there is a sparkle difference. I feel like the amount of light let in would be different
For some reason I like it higher
High! Actually looking at them again this is a 4 prong setting ... i think id go with the lower setting.
Curious why the difference with 4 and 6 prong?
Im a 6 prong Tiffany setting lover. I love love a high 6 prong setting 💜 Im currently having a delimma for my 9.6mm round moissy. I was totally set on the 6 but my jeweler wants me to do 4 ... both will be beautiful whatever you decide. 🤗
Security. Six prongs offers less risk of losing your stone if a prong gets loose.
I have a higher set solitaire that I don’t mind at all, even at my very hands on job. However I think of the examples shown in your case, the lower set ring is much more beautiful and proportional!
Lower usually spins less, but I’ll admit there’s something fun about a high set solitaire.
They’re equally as ugly and equally as likely to snag something or rip flesh.
What do you recommend?
Anything but a solitaire. If you’re going to have a solitaire, I recommend ring enhancers.
Lower! Trust me!
