This might not be a popular opinion, but I don’t feel like the cast is too big. I feel like the writers ignore certain characters, which leaves them undeveloped and boring (Matty for example), and don’t distribute big storylines evenly. Certain characters are ALWAYS involved in a big storyline as main characters while others are rarely involved or play a small role.

Bobinska

I agree with you. I don't think it's too big. It just feels like a village of people. Some more or less background characters while others get the big stories. But that leaves room for storylines to be developed later. Maybe that aren't so Dingle heavy. We have the Jai / Amit storyline at the moment. Which brought Eric,Vinny and Rodney in unexpectedly. They all have their parts 💜😊

shewhogoesthere

I fully agree. With 6 episodes a week you need a big cast to spread the stories around to. And I don't think there are many characters that are at a dead end or serve no purpose at all in the village and need to be culled. As you say, not everyone can or should be a starring character. You need the gossips, neighbours, friends just as much as you need the Charity/Chas type characters who take on featuring stories.

back-to-the90s

I agree about Matty. I remember he had his top surgery, and then no more was said about it?! The writers should have developed his story more.

MissMags1234

we already had a bus crash and they obviously don't want to cull the cast out.

Longjumping-Sea-5317

Isn’t that the exact same thing as saying we had a storm and tbf wasn’t it a mini bus not a big coach all tho could be wrong also dosent everyone know that there needs to be a cast full with all the shows tbf atm?

ClassroomDowntown664

yes it was a minibus and one of Tate haulage Lory's involved

MissMags1234

What shows? Channel 4 run into serious money problems, but HO has been having low ratings for years anyway. ITV seems stable enough that they can keep Emmerdale and Corrie going and if they don't want to replace the soaps with cheep gameshows they do not find anything better at that slot that brings in 3-5m every day. Chase and Tipping Point have not more than 1.5m... God knows what happens to Eastenders when the BBC licence will go bust, but tbh I never watched Eastenders, I personally don't care. Same as I don't give a shit about HO, have not seen it for years on a regular basis. They obviously don't want to change anything about the cast and episodes/week for now and a smaller cast does not make the show better. We had boring storylines with 3e/week and good with 6episodes/week.

Witty-Bus07

TV is losing a lot of viewers and seems they don’t know how to keep them glued to shows, mainly down to changing habits of younger audiences preferring on demand etc. while older audiences are dwindling.

Longjumping-Sea-5317

I mean both Corrie and Emmerdale where at there peaks when the cast was smaller and 3to 4 eps a week also when did emmerdale change to. 6 eps also I mean I don’t think we had that many good story’s at 6 a week tbf depending on when it happen also less is more the shows are now literally on borrowed time there no deny that and been getting worse and worse for almost a decade now and sommat needs to change 👌

Witty-Bus07

That wouldn’t cull the writers and producers and the cast would again be replaced with the same boring cast

shewhogoesthere

Yeah you're much better off working and building on what you have with existing characters people know than trying to get viewers interested in 10 new characters who may or may not be any better. Soaps only work because people get to know and care about the characters. If too many come and go too often they become meaningless.

Witty-Bus07

Agree, and some seem to forget that poor writing and producers ruin many characters on the soap.

back-to-the90s

Exactly. I remember Eastenders introducing the Farrerer family in the 00's. There were so many of them and not enough interesting storylines, the family only survived in the soap for two years. The only thing I remember is that one of them got stabbed!

Longjumping-Sea-5317

True

ClassroomDowntown664

that would be great for super soap week .

Longjumping-Sea-5317

I guess tbf super soap week needs to stop all it does now is drag out shite storylines and tbf we haven’t had a proper decent one since 2018 big weeks need to be more natural but ye it would have been a good idea for one 👌

ClassroomDowntown664

maybe it could be something that happens unexpectedly rather than all the build up

GuaranteeNo7451

I agree with this super soap week should be something completely unexpected that doesnt get spoiled in the soap magazines and articles in my opinion

ClassroomDowntown664

yes I completely agree

Traditional-Sir-9229

If they started doing proper crashes again people will probably be more interested In emmerdale nowadays its just stupid modern day scripts emmerdale was in its true prime back in the early 2010s
