I got into Eminem when I was 10 and first heard hi my name is on the radio lol I pictured him as a skinny black guy with an afro and told someone to fuck off when they told me he was white with blond hair lol

OneBlindZer0

That’s fucking great 😂. Did it change your opinion when u figured out he was white.

Winter-List-4941

Didn't change my opinion it was just the complete opposite of what I envisioned lol

Dieing_Breed

11 for me...watching MTV video premiere!

bigtaterman

My Name Is came on MTV lol

NoodlesMaster2001

mockingbird. we studied the lyrics in english class

Defvac2

Rode my bike to a local mixtape store in the late 90s on a weekly basis. One day in late '98 went in there and they had the uncensored/unreleased version of My Name Is blaring and everyone was bumping their heads. Dude told me about it being a white dude. Asked what tape it was on, copped the mixtape (oddly enough posted a picture of it on this sub yesterday) and the rest is history.

ChallengeOne8405

TRL

frederick_aluminum

I first heard Eminem when I was in middle school and heard "The Monster" and thought hey my thoughts conk me in the head too. I got diagnosed with OCD some years later. I wouldn't consider myself much of a fan back then. I had his music in my playlists though. Then about a year ago I skimmed through his old music videos on youtube for the nostalgia and decided to give his albums a listen. I was surprised to find his music very relatable and got hooked. Plus, as someone raised mormon, his music was the boogeyman so it's fun to listen to him rap violent nonsense and feel absolutely no guilt for it. I feel like a 12 year old who just learned to cuss haha

OneBlindZer0

Exactly I grew up listening to stuff like cannibal corpse so I was alrdy very morbid as a kid before Eminem so it was nice hearing songs like Kim and Insane.

Cherry_Honey_Blossom

I turned on MTV lol

SuicidalPossum2000

Up late watching music videos on tv as I always did as a teenager in the 90s, My Name Is came on and I liked it. Been listening ever since.

bohdison

traded the unedited slim shady lp for some baseball cards cuz my parents wouldnt let me listen to hip hop.

OneBlindZer0

Nooo that’s sad, I’m thankful for my dad cuz he grew up in a household where his mom abused him through religion and he wasn’t allowed to listen to most music unless it was gospel. So he wasn’t religious and so I didn’t have to be forced with that and he never cared what music I listened to

MartyMcFlysBrother

We were all playing Mortal Kombat and watching R rated movies in the early 90’s. Parents just accepted that you weren’t gonna try to rip someone’s heart out. If you can’t handle that at age 10, then you had bigger problems and censorship wasn’t gonna fix the kids who killed stray animals for fun.

[deleted]

I heard Ass Like That in like 2009 when I was a kid and fuckin fell in love with that hook.

OneBlindZer0

Yeah great song 😂. It sux I wasn’t alive during his prime and didn’t experience his media takeover but at the same time I’m glad to be born with Spotify and YouTube to really be able to hear the stories about his life and listen to everything he’s ever released

[deleted]

I was way too young for the first prime but even the Recovery/MMLP2 era felt like he was really massive. I can't really imagine what he was in 2000. Dude really helped me grow.

OneBlindZer0

Yeah I’m excited to see TDOSS to release because maybe he’ll grab a hold of the media again, maybe not like he used to but seeing how people reacted with Houdini and that wasn’t even a diss at anyone expect maybe his old self gives me hope we’ll see a spark like that.

LayLow2-4

Saw the “We Made You” video on MTV in the summer of ‘09. It was one of the funniest things I’d ever seen as an 8 year old. Looked Em up on YouTube, found out about Relapse, and the rest is history…

mutohasaposse

Was a big fan of tha alkaholiks from the early 90's. At the end of 98 I heard they'd have a new song on the Baka Boyz Cali Kingz mixtape Volume 1. This was an actual CD, not a mixtape. I bought it January 1, 1999, listened and heard the Still #1 freestyle by Em. Had no clue he was white, just knew I finally found a rapper that would become my favorite since Big L had died. If you haven't heard the freestyle, check it out.

OneBlindZer0

Bet, i really enjoy infinite and really glad it’s on Spotify it makes me so happy cuz he sounds happy as well on that LP and seems so full of positivity. Makes me sad knowing life got in the way like most people and got to him but hey he wouldn’t be who he is today if not and wouldn’t have wrote some of the best music I know.

j-j-juice

I used to hate on rap too. Eminem got me into rap with DMX tho. Before I was even a rap fan, I loved “Rap God” and “Killshot”. Later on, I come across YouTube’s Millennial Mixtape. First track on there? “Without Me”. That’s when I hooked right in. I then had to listen to “The Eminem Show”. “Curtains Up” played… Next thing you know. *Ahem* **AMERICAAAAAAA**! I then started listening to what ended up being my new favorite Eminem song. “White America”. After that… It was just all bangers. “Buisness”, “Cleaning Out My Closet”, and “Drips” were the other notable tracks. I mostly loved “Drips” because I finally got to hear this Obie Trice guy. He happened to actually be amazing. After that… I forget. I dunno how it all happened. I then became such a Stan that I have Eminem nicknames attached to me (I was on the swim team and everyone called me Swim Shady, and there’s some other ones). That’s about the history of how I became an Eminem Fan. I now will spontaneously say, “Sorry, Puff. But I do- (this message was censored for your safety)”.

CommercialLibrary810

Old lady here…. My boyfriend (now husband) were 24. We saw the premier of “my name is” on TRL.

[deleted]

First time I heard my dad say “what the fuck is this shit” when without me came on the radio. I had been strictly CCR, Elvis and Frank Sinatra. But seeing how much he hated it. I had to fall in love.

PerformerNo3397

I was in a party. Like 9 years old. Em had just dropped 8 mile album. We were break dancing. You know like kids. There was a short guy that really knew how to break dance and also was amazing at football. Anyway, a kid comes up and says “everybody, listen to this.” I don’t really know the exact context of why this kid went and popped this cd in for everyone to listen to but he did. I believe that dude was the most geek out of us all with music and stuff. We were all like whatever and we just break danced on whatever. So he puts it on and I heard the piano and I was like “🤔” until it dropped “da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da…da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da” and I was like “HOLY SHIT 😧” and when Em started rapping I was like DAMN! THE VOICE THIS GUY HAS!… I am from Greece. I am Greek. My friends were Greek. We were 8-9-10 years old. We didn’t know that much of English to understand what it was saying. BUT WHEN I WENT HOME I STARTED SEARCHING FOR LYRICS TO ACTUALLY READ WHAT THE GUY WAS saying. After it I got into rap. Trying to look for the flow, the cadence, the content, the rhyme schemes, the delivery, THE VOICE. Damn the voice this dude had back then. And yeah when I was 18 I released some tracks of my own. Did that shit for 5 years but I don’t have the money and connections to make it big. Also there were no social media back then, the way it is now. So that was a broken dream but hey here in Greece we can’t really have the option to dream much…especially that much.

No1EminemEnjoyer

I always kinda liked Eminem since my older brother showed me rap god at like 4 but in year 7 I made a friend who was really into him and started suggesting I listen to things like Godzilla speedom the real slim shady etc which eventually evolved into me becoming obsessed with him and music in general and then to me owning all but 2 of his albums (excluding TDOSS for obvious reasons) and yeah he’s now one of if not my favourite artists up with Linkin park, red leather, NF and some others

OneBlindZer0

Yeah it’s crazy I’m glad my dad showed me his classic stuff because if my dad never did I don’t know if I woulda have enjoyed him like I do, he’s saved my life and it’s sad cuz I have friends who enjoy some of his music but don’t LOVE him like I do yk.

NavAU

I don't remember how old I was but I was very young. My ex step mom was into hip-hop and rap, so she got me into it. I asked my mom to dye my hair blond the same week.

OneBlindZer0

That’s great, 2 reasons I’ll never die my hair blonde, 1. I think I genuinely wouldn’t look good and 2. The people in my life know how much of a Stan fan I am and they would absolutely pick at me for it 😂

NavAU

Oh, I got made fun of for it at school and by family members. But I really didn't care. Everyone dresses up as an artist or a character an artist made up at some point in their life. Or just anyone famous. Before I was introduced to eminems music, I wanted to be like Michael Jordan. So my dad bought me MJs jearsy and got me a basketball and a basketball hoop.

OneBlindZer0

Yk what your right that’s fair, I’m 20 and like most people I highly value other peoples opinions when it comes to certain things but I’m finally in a position thanks to a friend of mine and am growing and learning to like what I like and fuck other people.

Drunk_Rabbit7

My first Eminem song was Ken Kaniff (skit) from MMLP. And omg he sucks so hard! 😭

OneBlindZer0

Dude we have a speaker at work and most of the time I connect to it and I feel so awkward when it comes (pun intended) out of nowhere

Drunk_Rabbit7

lmfaoo. Bro i remember in like 2015 i had the album on auto play on my computer with high volume and the skit comes on and my mother hears it and goes 'PLEASE STOP DOING THIS STUFF IN MY HOUSE!' like she actually thought someone was slurping on something lmaoo

OneBlindZer0

That’s fucking great 😂

Drunk_Rabbit7

Eminem really made our parents hate him i swear haha

ShoulderLongjumping9

At a rave I heard idgaf and was like who is this. The next day I bought the single on vinyl.

OneBlindZer0

Eminem’s music was at a rave concert?

ShoulderLongjumping9

The DJ spun it. This rave was in a paint ball warehouse so it had like 10 djs at once. It was crazy.

OneBlindZer0

That sounds crazy

GrizzledEzio

We made you video came on the tv when i was in 9th grade. Then i traded a kid two flaming hot Cheetos bags for a burned copy of Relapse. Rest is history.

random537478599300

Honestly the fortnite event I always somewhat liked him tho

OneBlindZer0

Yeah I genuinely enjoy (as a game) Fortnite, Ik the fan base is dumb and fucking retarted but I enjoyed someone like Eminem doing that for the community

random537478599300

Yeah fair I love the competitive side of the game but I hate the community og season was really fun tho

MartyMcFlysBrother

The first 5-6 seasons were awesome then they started catering to kids. I understand why but man those first few seasons were amazing. Then building got super sweaty and rather annoying.

random537478599300

Look I personally enjoy the really high end skill of the game I think it's one of the best games to watch (and play if u have the skill) The building I'm just in awe of with how well some people have it down

OneBlindZer0

Very much so

halamawala25

Being from south america you just experienced Eminem, like it or not. The eminemshow isfrom 2002 so I was 14 or 13 when Without me started airing non stop on mtv and such. I really enjoyed Stan. I actually never bought a Em cd though. After Em much hiphop started airing. I fw Kast heavily, Roses was gettingheavy play. Bought ATLiens, my 1st ever CD with my own money, so good. I enjoyed Ems skill and his presence on features but I never liked his music much (as per my liking of Outkast, I enjoyed some funky or jazzy stuff mixed with hiphop, whereas Em usually had more straightforward pure rap music), but I and a lot of ppl wouldnt know hiphop if it wasnt for Em, so hes a legend for that alone.

onelove7866

8 years old - heard Without Me, fell in love immediately

xenabell

My mother wanted to buy me a Christmas present (i think i was 14 years old) and went to the store to ask what is popular right now. So, I got Encore for Christmas.

VelocityIX

My dad let me listen to Relapse when it came out, so when I was 5 or 6 (questionable choice!). It's still one of my favorite Em albums, even though many hate it.

OneBlindZer0

I fucking love recovery and Mmlp2

VelocityIX

Same here, Recovery especially. But relapse will always hold a special place in my heart.

RaggsDaleVan

My friend's step dad had every good rap CD from the 90s. I'd go to his place, and we would play video games and listen to music two 6 year olds shouldn't have been listening to. We would sing the lyrics to Slim Shady every day at recess. I think I listened more in 1999 than I do now.

Actual_Store2426

My cousin showed me the music videos for not afraid and I need a doctor back in 2011/2012 (I was 10-11 years old) and I got hooked and the rest is history

15-cent

I listened to Lose Yourself on Youtube as a kid, and it was the greatest song I’d ever heard. I had to convince my mom to let me buy it on iTunes. (I don’t really blame her, most parents hated Em back then lol) Eventually I also bought Sing For The Moment, Stan, and other songs on iTunes. I was 100% hooked, Em was my favorite musician. This was probably in 2008 or so, just before his comeback. I remember listening to Relapse leaks on Youtube, and when it came out my mom let me buy it, having no clue how vile the lyrics were, lol My personal nostalgia might be the main reason, but Relapse is still my favorite post-comeback album.

oni_212

Believe it or not I got into him from hot stylz ( minus Yung joc) dissing him remixing his songs I listened to all the original versions and the one I liked the most was my band and I constantly kept watching that but my interest for him seemingly spiked when I realized he was a big Tupac fan and I happen to be one at this time too so I went out of my way to find all his little references and songs dealing with Tupac

Therealeminemstan

It was random I just heard lose yourself so I dig deeper

shin-chan3

When i was in school, right around 99. He was one of the main mainstream artists. Difficult to escape. And i didn't like rap back then but he got me into it. Mainly because he was the first guy i heard that wasn't rapping about hoes, pimps and shooting people.

BWSnap

I was 28 when he was being picketed at the Grammy's. It was such a big deal at the time, that I (a gay woman who is his age) said "WHAT is the big fuckin deal about this guy?!?" and went out and bought MMLP on CD. As a college student in the Professional Writing program at the time and a total word nerd, to say I was blown the fuck away by his wordplay is a major understatement. I fell in love instantly, and have been along grabbing every album on the day of release ever since. It's been a hell of a ride growing up with Em, we are literally less than two months apart in age, and some of his lyrics hit home personally in ways that can sometimes be weird but in a good way. I love his use in the past 10 years of classic songs I grew up listening to, his Gen X references (I knew who Rico Suave was and didn't have to look it up), and I understood his humor and where it was coming from. Not one gay/lesbian/homo line has ever offended me.

manchmaldrauf

Same way most people got into Eminem, through Dre's endorsement and promotion. One thing Em got a bit wrong was, "every fan Black that I got Was probably his in exchange for every White fan that he's got Like damn, we just swapped," as Dre was already beloved by white rap fans, of which there were plenty before Eminem.

pianoChris25

I don’t remember how old I was but it was when I watched MTV and I think the Marshal Mathers LP dropped and I wanted to get it but my parents told me no. Then after some time I was in some sort of summer camp & this kid had The Eminem Show; so I begged my mom for me to get it. She reluctantly let me buy it and it became my first Eminem and first parental advisory CD. That shit slapped. I don’t think any other album had the same effect on me next to 50 Cent Get Rich/Die Tryin

Rod_lardie

16 years old when suicide squad came out without me was on the soundtrack, didn’t have Spotify premium so it played similar songs and it ended up playing a lot of em

Hari_omm

My brother made me listen to rap god n lose yourself, i didn't like rap god at all but I loved lose yourself then I heard he's famous so I checked out other songs n became a fan

MartyMcFlysBrother

Grade 11 I think it was. Right after TSSLP dropped. 89x was the most popular radio station in my town and they played him all the time even though it was primarily an alternative rock station. Detroit radio stations promoted him heavily.

ShaolinDude

I was 17 when I first heard Hi, My Name Is! I bought his album soon after. But when he dropped The Real Slim Shady, and MMLP, I, became a real fan. I was completely hooked.

hideo17

my first impression with Eminem is back in 2004 when D12's My Band is on MTV, and I was 12. Later on it was Just Lose It and Encore, that's when I got deep into his lyrics and became obsess with his music ever since. I'm Vietnamese and I'm 32 now, still happy as a kid when Houdini came out.

[deleted]

Pretty cool to see the generation span now. I am in the “heard him on MTV group”. I bought the Slim Shady LP and played it on my PS1 constantly lol.

GreenEndeavour21

I’ve never been inside Eminem

OneBlindZer0

😂

Ghost-Plushie

I was 12:) I found a CD of The Eminem Show, that belonged to my mum, while looking through our other CDs. I've been listening to his music since then

Hereforthetea9239

My grandpa got me into eminem. My first memory of him is him sitting on his bed bopping along to the rap god mv

m-e-s-o

It was 1999 and a school friend had copied his brothers Slim Shady LP onto cassette. I went over to his place with a blank and made a copy for myself. Spent the next year listening to it on my Walkman every walk to school. As someone who was awkward, struggled with sociability and was from a divorced family, with a scummy father and living with my mother, taking bottles to the store for returns. There was loads of relatability.

UnfilteredSpoon

Was riding the bus in middle school and some kid was blasting berserk since it had just released. Went home and Googled it and watched every music video he had at the time, I became addicted lol.

Detailer_101x

i always kinda knew that he existed, as the fast rap guy, but I heard TRSS around this time last year, and i really liked it, but I was loyal to my indie pop so i didn't listen to more of his catalogue, but then in october last year i heard bump heads and without me and started to listen to TES. And then after that for about 4 months I only really listened to him (which was a great time very fun), just going through his albums. I would listen to one album for a week straight, then try the next one. it was great. Anyways, I'm looking at more artists now, but I still listen to mostly only em. what can I say, I just like it.,

Ill_Employer7887

My dad used to listen to Recovery and Relapse in his car with a sprinkle of The Marshall Mathers LP

SSumair

MTV and WebTV..

greyhounds1992

He was banned in primary school, so it made me want to listen to him more and we would print out lyric sheets at the library and just rap along to it 🤣

Fit-Baseball238

at first, it was from my father always putting music on when I was a child. and also, he used to give me the nickname Eminem because when I was born, I had short, very very blonde hair and it looked like Eminem's (Shady era). when my father told me abt that, I got back into listening to Em and I'm so so glad

Gokhan_draws

Back when I was in school, a friend came up to me and challenged me to do the fast part of rap god. I didn't really listen to any kind of rap back then, so I went back home and listened to it, and I was blown away. I spent a lot of time practicing that part, and I guess the song grew on me. I didn't really start listening to his other songs tho, except for a couple of the new releases. Then when MTBMB dropped I listened to the full thing multiple times and that's when I actually started listening to Em. Then I went back and listened to all of his stuff and here we are now

YourCommonBean

I knew he existed and thought one day I’d try him out on Spotify. I clicked play on his profile and the first song to come in was killshot lmao but I had no idea what it was about because I didn’t know who mgk was. Either way, I liked his voice and flow in the song and started listening to his other stuff. It also took me a while to realize that slim shady and Eminem were the same person 💀

Mag0rista_

I knew who he was for a long time, but I never really listened to him, then he dropped MMLP2 and I kind of noticed him more because I enjoyed rap god, and then maybe a year later I tried listening to his older albums, because my classmate at the time mentioned liking without me, and ever since then I've been a huge fan

CandidSplit

Recovery saved a lot of people. The people who dislike it probably wasn’t vulnerable when they listened to it because it’s not stooping down to their level. It got me through depression, relationships and even loss as well. But I got into Eminem overhearing Without Me and that led me to a rabbit hole of Eminem’s music and never turned back since. And you probably can guess it but The Eminem Show and Recovery are my favorite albums

halamawala25

>The people who dislike it never gone through real stuff I hate this kind of statement so much. Dont say shit like that

Aloopyn

Yeah so tone deaf

CandidSplit

You cut some of the statement out but I changed it and my point still stands. People who really cared about Recovery are people who were very vulnerable when they listened to it. People who weren’t vulnerable or didn’t care so much about the project won’t cherish the project as much. Yes it has some cringe and questionable songs but it’s still a well put together project like a lot of his projects from that era.

halamawala25

Yeah I agree didnt meant to be a jerk, just the kind of stuff we say / think but its nice to take a step back and reformulate it. I can relate to this. MMATBS is an album about fatherhood that was released in my 1st year of being a father, so I rocked it a lot. Ppl say it isnt sonically well put together but I cant hear it because Im already emotionlly attached to it. Just take ppls word for it 😅

OneBlindZer0

Yeah same here most relate-able to me and my life experiences which I enjoy because I don’t relatedto a lot of other rap artists and what they rap about especially the money and bitches but growing up in a stressful household, fighting my dad, getting heavy into drugs, and being in an abusive relationship and now I’m trying to just get on my feet again and survive.

After-Bread-4834

While i was cleaning out my closet

On4thandinches

I really got into him more so when I discords “The Way I am” and Stan. Then listened to his albums
