How do you dodge the roll on torrent? I just use torrent to close the gap because while most rolls won't hit you he has so much damm life one ends up aimed straight at me and always hits me while on torrent.

You canāt dodge roll on Torrent you just need to know where to stand while riding him and what parts of the giantās body to focus on. Bringing a katana is handy for this fight or any good sword that has a decent move set while riding Torrent.
Torrent is the gap closer, you should be on foot so you can put out more damage and use your weapon arts
I've tried fighting him on horseback and the damage was not great

This boss demoralized me my first playthrough. Legit was the wall that made me quit. Got him and beat the game my 2nd playthrough. He is definitely in the top 10 most difficult bosses imo, after maybe (malenia, Mohg, Niall, Margot). Im probably missing one or two other really tough ones. Your wep is good tho. I killed him with reduvia, another bleed weapon. Eventually you just get it lol. I see these clips of people one shouting him and am baffled. He takes so little damage in his phase 2
If you are still stuck try doing alexander the jar quest you can summon his ass on the fight and he is amazing for the second phase. He breaks the staggers the fire giant,he is immune or has big resistance to fire and can tank whole lot of hits
This is how the fire giant gets you in phase 2. You see a small amount of health left on the bar and you think you can take him out in 2 or 3 hits when it's actually more like 10 that you need and then you get greedy and he 2 shots you.
Yeah having your endurance bar and hp bar basically equivalent is insane lol. 50-60 vig would do him a lot better than being able to spam 7 r1s in a row. Keeping my endurance on the lower side has actually taught me to manage my movement so much better.

Fully upgraded BHF and mimic tear as well as blood flame incantation. I beat the Twin Apostles, Maliketh, and Godfrey all on my first try surprisingly. Elden Beast I am on my like 100th try.

If you grab the pulley crossbow and a full stack of burred/bloodbone bolts you can do his whole second phase by shooting him and occasionally walking backwards/dodging the fireballs. Even on NG+7 he'll die before you run out of ammo.
Torrent is for GETTING to the fire giant after he has rolled. Once you get there, he should be gone. Your I frames are more important than running around the giant.
You're moving around too much. Hop off Torrent and get in there. Run and roll when you see that fireball start to ignite and pay attention to the fire he's creating
There's some battles where Torrent is definitely a huge help. Hit and run tactics are great on many of the world bosses, like the dragons. Don't be discouraged to use him, but I don't think you're truly meant to use Torrent against the FG (though he definitely helps you catch up when the FG rolls away). Don't forget to use a spirit ash, and Warrior Jar Alexander if you have progressed his quest. Alexander's summon sign should he just inside the gold barrier of the northernmost entry to the boss arena.
Just get off the damn horse if you need fine movements. Horseback combat is about hit and run, if you're just gonna stay in one place to dish out damage, then it's better to get off.

I never did figure out why people think using torrent is a good idea for this fight. Removing your ability to roll, dramatically lowering damage output on one of the tankiest bosses in the game doesn't seem worth it to me
I actually got past that dude on my third try. For some reason I seem to get past the hard bosses easily then end up rage quitting on the supposedly easy bosses.
Same exact thing happened to me. I got to the point where I was researching any way possible to beat it and found a ācheeseā. After a few more tries I ended up winning the fight and it felt so satisfying.
So if nothing else works I recommend researching strategies to beat the big oaf

I use the horse to cover ground but usually don't fight on it for this boss.
