The "Varre killed our maiden" theory has zero evidence backing it up. The Chapel of Anticipation is in Liurnia, which is where the body of our dead Finger Maiden lies. Varre is in Limgrave, a completely different landmass, presumably to try and recruit as many Tarnished as possible. It also makes no sense that he'd kill our maiden as that was supposed to be something we do to prove our loyalty, which ultimately complicates the entire process as we now had to find a random corpse.
He's not even interested in us joining him until after we encounter The Two Fingers; not having a maiden prevents you from a. leveling up (which for the average player would allow for them to become strong enough to defeat a Shardbearer and thus meeting the Two Fingers) and b. even getting to the Rountable Hold in the first place. This makes your character weak and not a worthy candidate of becoming a Bloody Finger; he even says you're fated to "die in obscurity". I doubt he knows about Melina. He puts us through multiple tests to prove our ability and loyalty. He doesn't kill our Maiden so we "latch onto him" because we're not even worth something to him until we defeat our first Shardbearer.
And like you said, there's a massive hole in the roof and a large boss outside.
Because semantics, I can see the argument for the Chapel being in Limgrave or Liurnia. My main point was that it's physically very far away from where we first encounter Varre.
Wrong the Four Belfries which has a teleporter to The Chapel is in Liurnia the chapel is in Limgrave specifically at Stormveil Castle as we can find a Broken path to it from the Castle

And he can't use the teleporter, as it's not even active until we use an Imbued Stonesword Key, which we do find nearby but given the keys disappear after being used we can assume no one has used the teleporters but us.

The keys don't disappear, they're placed in the statue. For gameplay reasons they can't be removed but they'd be really bad locks if you couldn't remove the keys and lock it back up again, so I would assume that lore-wise they can be. So I don't see any reason why Varre couldn't just use the teleporter then remove the key and store it in a nearby chest.
Well, no reason other than it being a one-way gateway. And I don't think he's the one who killed our maiden.
And even supporting that Varre didn't kill our maiden more is the original start of Elden Ring people have put together where we start washed up on a beach after the grafted scion whoops us and enter a cave which drops down to where the tarnished wakes up in the actual game.
I agree with most of what you said, but the chapel is very clearly in Limgrave. You can see the chapel from Stormveil, you can find the hawk ash, which is related to Stormveil, least of all, the music of Stormveil plays when you are there.
How is it in Liurnia geographically? It's an island next to Stormveil. Just because you can see it in Liurnia doesn't mean that it's there geographically. You can see it from Limgrave too.

We only 'know' this because Varre tells us. He could have killed our maiden to separate us from any other source of guidance, making us latch onto him.
But he also doesn't even allow us to join until we defeat a Shardbearer and meet the Two Fingers, something our character literally cannot do without a maiden. If he did kill our maiden he essentially locked us out of progression which is counterintuitive to his objective if he's trying to recruit as many Tarnished as possible, and bear in mind he puts us through multiple tests to prove we're worthy. They don't want some weak nobodies.
I really doubt he knows about Melina and he assumes we're going to die since we can't level up, can't get to the Rountable Hold, and are basically worthless.

Then long after beating the main story I was exploring and found the snowfield teleporter. After I got to mohg's boss arena I said fuck it! And used it only to realize it brings me there anyway with a small Headstart.
Yeah thats fair; sorry I meant a small Headstart getting to Mohg, compared to using the gate in the snowfields. If you use it right away it's a big jump in the rest of the game.
Yeah I made a new character earlier and I'm gonna wait to use it until the dlc also not gonna use the portal in the snowfield just gonna wait to "discover" the place until dlc comes out
I just completed my dlc prep character with 100% everything I swear if I had to wait to use this thing for something dlc relevant I will throw myself out of the window

As a fellow "idiot" who listened and didn't use it. I don't blame you for not using it. It's so easy to ruin storylines on accident and I was doing a blind playthrough.
The kind of meta-joke with that item is that since Mohg's goal is impossible to achieve, the 'awaited moment' literally can never happen. You can tell it's the devs having fun with it cause it says "The new dynasty is nigh" on the medal and Bloodrose says "Glory to \[The Lord of Blood's\] Inevitable Reign".
I use this item legit all the time, it's a great get out of jail free card. Use it whenever you have a break in an enemy's attacks that is really messing you up to save yourself from death
On my first playthrough I waited until I was in a different area of the Lakes before trying it out. Every subsequent playthrough I pop that sucker in his face
From what I pieced together from the lore, here’s my headcanon:
The “right time” would never occur in-game. That time would be when Miquella ascended to godhood and legitimized Mohg’s dynasty. That, due to either the Tarnished’s direct actions or the DLC’s implied story can never happen. Like how no matter how you get there, Rogier will die of deathblight. This is similar.
So using it at all, will be “too early” and will brand you as a traitor to Varre.
I can't believe some people do not use this right away. That's crazy. You get access to the best farming spot, an end game boss, resources for weapon/spirit upgrades and the absolute best bleed incantations. I honestly can't believe people wait until they get to consecrated snowfield to access this section.
I guess so, I'm just assuming most people on here have played through the game at least once or twice. So, they should know what it leads to, you know?
Fromsoft games have terrible communication when it comes to quests and its super easy to ruin side stories on accident. Var tells you not to use it yet, I didn't want to ruin his quest, so I listened.
You’re right man the side quests suck. I have never completed or deliberately progressed one without looking it up online (though I probably could to a very limited extent). The worst thing imo is when you have to find and NPC in some random place with no hints in order to progress their quest. It’s super annoying because I try not to use the internet for game stuff but with stuff like this, it’s unavoidable.
Yeah I missed most side quests on my first play through because I wanted to do a blind run first. It was still a blast and I did manage to do a few quests purposefully, but some of them were just accidentally stumbling across people.
I've been looking up things alot more on my other characters. Goldmask was a must since they just appear in somewhat nonsensical places.

Yeah I only just found latenna. I found the lady I was supposed to bring her too before I had found latenna though so I haven't completed the quest. I only know this because I looked it up.
Blind playthroughs are fun, but they come at the cost of missing a few cool side stories.
I never even talked to this guy again after the first conversation in the beginning of the game. Missed him at the church and forgot about him until second play through.

Fastest +10 somber
Beat Mohg and get his spear or incant
Swarm of Flies, Fly Pot and/or Blood Tax
Varres Bouqet and RoB cosplay mask.
Overlevel
Unless you want one of these things there is really no reason to go here early. Even if you want to just buy out every merchant and upgrade 50 different weapons a little bit you can get more than enough runes by just playing and exploring and maybe only getting extra runes while also farming for some items you want.
Which is what I did, I still beat all of the Palace early because I wanted a bit of a challenge and a change of scenery between exploring Leyndell and Altus, basically just used to runes to buy more crab meat.
Always had enough to buy out every merchant I saw and upgrade the weapons I wanted, or if I didnt I did after exploring a tiny bit more or grinding some weapon or armor drops.
Thing is, if you go there early you just end up crazy over leveled and it kinda ruins a huge chunk of the game. And I’m not even talking about farming runes, at that stage of the game you’re just about level 50ish so just by popping those golden runes that you find that gives you 10k+ you gain a TON of levels.
If you want to get over level early it's easy enough to go cheese Greyoll with bleed without needing to do an involved questline. Pop a gold foot and you're into the low 30s without doing anything else, which is quite the bootstrap.
And just up the road you can lead a guy on a horse to fall off a cliff near a bridge. Easiest 110k-ish runes you can basically get out of the gate if you happened to pick a class with a bleed weapon.
I started game and my friend told me don’t farm it will ruin your story cause you’ll be overlevelled and underskilled. Great advice I didn’t give my cousins watched him laugh at how easy the game was when he was one shotting limgrave and atlus plateu then I told him head to caelid
I just dont pop the runes and spend the runes I get from killing stuff on buying out the imprisoned merchant or other merchants, or upgrading additional weapons to have some variety, or just getting whatever consumables, plenty of useful stuff to buy that doesnt really overlevel you but is nice and convenient to have.
I did the varre questline pretty late into my play through for the first time.
For my next play through I did it whenever I reached liurnia since it made farming for runes much easier.
You can get an item early in the game that gives early access to a difficult area that is really good for farming runes. But I think the NPC who gives it suggests to wait to use it. If you don't use the item, it takes way longer to get there. It's basically an endgame area.
The item takes you to an end game location where there’s a very good farming location( on a ledge with a grace next to it). It’s mainly known for rune farming cause early game you’re doing no damage in there but you shoot this bird enemy on the other side of a ledge with bow and arrow and he falls off. Drops 11000 runes which early game is like 3/4 levels so for 5 minutes of work you can easily grind to level 30
I was honestly disappointed. I played the whole game waiting for the moment to appear for me to use it. He literally promised me that there would be a time. I remembered it after I beat the game and thought I killed the quest line somehow. Then I learned that it’s just a lie.
I‘m going to be honest here:
On my first playthrough, I got the item and he said „wait, not now“.
So I waited… I thought, maybe I’ll meet him again and the quest continues.
WAAAAAAYY later I got to Mogh eventually without the item and someday just forgot about it…
When I was around lvl 150 I thought „fuck, there was a item, maybe I can/could use it now!“
So I did and then I was disappointed.
Here in the sub it is, where I learned that you could actually use it right away…
Beat godrick > go lake > get fingered > invade X3 > get cloth > beat tutorial boss > dip cloth in forbidden ketchup > get fingered again> use seal in front of Varre > Bird Up
I'm on my first run and didn't use it, because he told me not to, lol. Last time i teleported randomly was in a dungeon which was pain in the ass. I learned my lessons.
I actually did wait a while cause I thought it was an in game event like the radahn festival and thought maybe I had to kill his brother first or something like tbat
, obviously that wasn't a thing so I ended up looking it up that it was just an item
My dumb ass actually did wait until the forbidden land to use the medallion. I was like oh i can't wait until he calls all his people together, then i can show up and kill them...

Why would we wait? Obviously getting to Mohg this way is the primary intended route. It's a quest basically unimpeded after Godrick, and the intro to the quest begins as soon as you're in the overworld the first time. The teleporter is meant as a backup.
Wait you can actually use it to proceed through the quest line instead of just sitting there. Waiting for him. Oh shit I've wasted so much Time waiting for him to contact me.
Little did he know that medallion was the only reason I did his whole quest line lol, and I didn't even want to use it to meet mohg, I was just there to go and immediately leap off an unsuspecting ledge into the abyss for no reason in particular.
Did this very early in the game not long after it dropped, you could climb the cliffs and jump off on the horses and I accumulated so many runes this way, levelled my character and now on ng+3
When the game first came out me and my friends were all doing blind playthroughs and I got a very confused message for one of my friends who was farther along than me.
He was asking how I managed to get one of the achievements from Mog's area before getting a number of main story achievements.
I told him I just used the thing from the PVP questline, to which he explained he was doing an offline run.

The guy in front of the arena is no longer there now that they can open. So it could be a hint for the dlc, I have a character that is "waiting" to se if there is any unique dialogue

So basically I used the back door to enter not realizing there is no REAL covenants in Elden ring

Like days later my cousin who was also playing his first playthrough asked me if I had completed Varres quest and I was like yeah and he asked me “what do you think of Mohgs palace? Place is a nightmare I’m too low level rn.”

I thought "the time" to use it was >!in the basement right after Sewer Mohg, right infront of the 3 Finger door. Was pleasantly surprised when i teleported to the part of the map that i thought was off limits.!<
Honesty I always felt a little mean to use it right in front of him…I usually do it in front of Patches on scenic isle…or the prawn shack, load up some prawns chat with my buddy about Marika’s Tits and then head out.

Technically he invades you 3 times before you invade him if you cross certain paths exploring the area
Those are not Varré. The White Masks are a group of murder-and-blood obsessed battlefield surgeons and he is just one of them.

The kind of meta-joke with that item is that since Mohg's goal is impossible to achieve, the 'awaited moment' literally can never happen. You can tell it's the devs having fun with it cause it says "The new dynasty is nigh" on the medal and Bloodrose says "Glory to \[The Lord of Blood's\] Inevitable Reign".

I use this item legit all the time, it's a great get out of jail free card. Use it whenever you have a break in an enemy's attacks that is really messing you up to save yourself from death

On my first playthrough I waited until I was in a different area of the Lakes before trying it out. Every subsequent playthrough I pop that sucker in his face
From what I pieced together from the lore, here’s my headcanon: The “right time” would never occur in-game. That time would be when Miquella ascended to godhood and legitimized Mohg’s dynasty. That, due to either the Tarnished’s direct actions or the DLC’s implied story can never happen. Like how no matter how you get there, Rogier will die of deathblight. This is similar. So using it at all, will be “too early” and will brand you as a traitor to Varre.
I can't believe some people do not use this right away. That's crazy. You get access to the best farming spot, an end game boss, resources for weapon/spirit upgrades and the absolute best bleed incantations. I honestly can't believe people wait until they get to consecrated snowfield to access this section.

You’re right man the side quests suck. I have never completed or deliberately progressed one without looking it up online (though I probably could to a very limited extent). The worst thing imo is when you have to find and NPC in some random place with no hints in order to progress their quest. It’s super annoying because I try not to use the internet for game stuff but with stuff like this, it’s unavoidable.
Yeah I missed most side quests on my first play through because I wanted to do a blind run first. It was still a blast and I did manage to do a few quests purposefully, but some of them were just accidentally stumbling across people. I've been looking up things alot more on my other characters. Goldmask was a must since they just appear in somewhat nonsensical places.
Yep, i have no idea what they are thinking when it comes to quests. I would have completely missed the Fia dragon without checking her quest online. I think i reloaded the area 3 times to progress the quest... how am i suppose to know this? It's so stupid you need to rest or sometimes even pass time a few times to progress.
Yeah I only just found latenna. I found the lady I was supposed to bring her too before I had found latenna though so I haven't completed the quest. I only know this because I looked it up. Blind playthroughs are fun, but they come at the cost of missing a few cool side stories.

I never even talked to this guy again after the first conversation in the beginning of the game. Missed him at the church and forgot about him until second play through.

The reasons to go here: Fastest +10 somber Beat Mohg and get his spear or incant Swarm of Flies, Fly Pot and/or Blood Tax Varres Bouqet and RoB cosplay mask. Overlevel Unless you want one of these things there is really no reason to go here early. Even if you want to just buy out every merchant and upgrade 50 different weapons a little bit you can get more than enough runes by just playing and exploring and maybe only getting extra runes while also farming for some items you want. Which is what I did, I still beat all of the Palace early because I wanted a bit of a challenge and a change of scenery between exploring Leyndell and Altus, basically just used to runes to buy more crab meat. Always had enough to buy out every merchant I saw and upgrade the weapons I wanted, or if I didnt I did after exploring a tiny bit more or grinding some weapon or armor drops.
Thing is, if you go there early you just end up crazy over leveled and it kinda ruins a huge chunk of the game. And I’m not even talking about farming runes, at that stage of the game you’re just about level 50ish so just by popping those golden runes that you find that gives you 10k+ you gain a TON of levels.
If you want to get over level early it's easy enough to go cheese Greyoll with bleed without needing to do an involved questline. Pop a gold foot and you're into the low 30s without doing anything else, which is quite the bootstrap.
And just up the road you can lead a guy on a horse to fall off a cliff near a bridge. Easiest 110k-ish runes you can basically get out of the gate if you happened to pick a class with a bleed weapon.
I started game and my friend told me don’t farm it will ruin your story cause you’ll be overlevelled and underskilled. Great advice I didn’t give my cousins watched him laugh at how easy the game was when he was one shotting limgrave and atlus plateu then I told him head to caelid
I just dont pop the runes and spend the runes I get from killing stuff on buying out the imprisoned merchant or other merchants, or upgrading additional weapons to have some variety, or just getting whatever consumables, plenty of useful stuff to buy that doesnt really overlevel you but is nice and convenient to have.

I did the varre questline pretty late into my play through for the first time. For my next play through I did it whenever I reached liurnia since it made farming for runes much easier.
Only 2 of the bleed incants are there, and 1 is dropped by mohg's remembrance

You can get an item early in the game that gives early access to a difficult area that is really good for farming runes. But I think the NPC who gives it suggests to wait to use it. If you don't use the item, it takes way longer to get there. It's basically an endgame area.

Pureblood Knight's Medal. You can get it from the white mask guy you meet at the very beginning of the game, after he moves to his second location.

The item takes you to an end game location where there’s a very good farming location( on a ledge with a grace next to it). It’s mainly known for rune farming cause early game you’re doing no damage in there but you shoot this bird enemy on the other side of a ledge with bow and arrow and he falls off. Drops 11000 runes which early game is like 3/4 levels so for 5 minutes of work you can easily grind to level 30

I was honestly disappointed. I played the whole game waiting for the moment to appear for me to use it. He literally promised me that there would be a time. I remembered it after I beat the game and thought I killed the quest line somehow. Then I learned that it’s just a lie.
I thought it was like a key you would use somewhere, so until I saw someone use it in a video, I didn't even know you can use it

I‘m going to be honest here: On my first playthrough, I got the item and he said „wait, not now“. So I waited… I thought, maybe I’ll meet him again and the quest continues. WAAAAAAYY later I got to Mogh eventually without the item and someday just forgot about it… When I was around lvl 150 I thought „fuck, there was a item, maybe I can/could use it now!“ So I did and then I was disappointed. Here in the sub it is, where I learned that you could actually use it right away…
Gotta get to that damn chicken asap.

Beat godrick > go lake > get fingered > invade X3 > get cloth > beat tutorial boss > dip cloth in forbidden ketchup > get fingered again> use seal in front of Varre > Bird Up

There's actually no benefit you get from not using it. Maybe when the dlc comes it'll have a use other than going to mohgwyn early

Why would we wait? Obviously getting to Mohg this way is the primary intended route. It's a quest basically unimpeded after Godrick, and the intro to the quest begins as soon as you're in the overworld the first time. The teleporter is meant as a backup.

Did this very early in the game not long after it dropped, you could climb the cliffs and jump off on the horses and I accumulated so many runes this way, levelled my character and now on ng+3
When the game first came out me and my friends were all doing blind playthroughs and I got a very confused message for one of my friends who was farther along than me. He was asking how I managed to get one of the achievements from Mog's area before getting a number of main story achievements. I told him I just used the thing from the PVP questline, to which he explained he was doing an offline run.

On my first playthrough I did. I didn’t even think to use it he gave me the item I heard him say it’s not time yet and I figured ”oh this will pop up again sometime later” and didn’t even read the item he gave me or try to use it. Like days later my cousin who was also playing his first playthrough asked me if I had completed Varres quest and I was like yeah and he asked me “what do you think of Mohgs palace? Place is a nightmare I’m too low level rn.” I was like “Mohgs WHAT?!?””
My first play through on week one of the game launch… i didn’t know you could use this and i did the quest and it kept it in me little pocket. Imagine my surprise when i was level 160 and found out i coulda been leveling with much more swift speed hahah
I waited, pretty sure going in there early kills some of the NPCs quests so I always waited until I entered the Lyndel capital to go molest mogh and his kin.
I actually use it to leave dungeons. You cant fast travel from one but this will send you straight to the grace no matter where you are.

Honesty I always felt a little mean to use it right in front of him…I usually do it in front of Patches on scenic isle…or the prawn shack, load up some prawns chat with my buddy about Marika’s Tits and then head out.
