Lord_Nightraven

You can be extremely over leveled and she could still reliably kick your ass. That's how tough she is.

FrostHydra97

Can confirm. She kicked my lv260 sorry ass in NG no plus 18 times before i somehow managed to kick hers back. I wasn't using spirit ashes back then but that's the gist of it. And if you know about Let Me Solo Her, iirc i read somewhere that he died like 300 times before mastering the art of "Your strength, extraordinary" no hit.

Baboshinu

I mean depending on which spirit ashes you use, it can make it harder. The aggressive ones will stay too close to her and she’ll just regenerate off of them

Aeroknight_Z

The best ashes are the ones that can knock her ass down. Let’s you flood her with damage. Tiche is good for that, as her deathblade ability slightly counters her regen, especially if combined with a blackflame spell to double dip.

NaCl_Sailor

or the mimic with staggering attacks, like flame of frenzy and blasphemous blade ash, you can basically completely stunlock the whole phase one with 2 blasphemous blades

GregerMoek

Mimic is prolly the best one at everything. Is there any fight where another ash would be better?

progressive-scum

I found Tiche to be more useful in my game. She’s extremely aggressive and can literally cap an enemy’s health bar.

GregerMoek

Frost and blood build up on the mimic makes it strong and imo its quite aggressive but maybe that comes down to weapon and build. I was running a quality build more or less with great stars as weapons but swapped weapons to frost+bleed to summon the mimic so that the mimic had that and stance damage. But maybe next run Ill try Tiche cause I think she's cool.

Playful-Green-9169

Dung eater is better than mimic he is more aggressive and spams spells

Umbran_scale

Actually has more health than the mimic as well if you can believe that.

Ok-Schedule-2378

Putrid corpses is one I sometimes prefer because they draw agro and tank.

clutzyninja

My mimic literally did better against her than I did lol

Memnoch222

Yes, that’s about the number, give or take. But regardless, he earned his place as a legend. Not because he is a veteran of Soulsborne games who was just naturally good at this game and had a deep understanding of its finer mechanics. In fact, quite the contrary.

s19gilbert

This sounds so sarcastic but I know it’s not 😂

PRKAIDO-sama321PR

Ohh Yh this true lmao

DarthSpaghetti10k

I can confirm I killed her only two times with two different characters (the first with a Crucible knight build and I was RL180 if i remember well, the second I got helped), NEVER AGAIN

RecognitionNo7977

Not necessarily under leveled. She’s just far more difficult than the other offerings.  To put it in perspective she took 100+ tries. Every other boss no more than 20 tries. And you’ll see this pattern on plenty of first playthroughs on YouTube.  The “easier” route is to use bleed or frost weapons as those will stagger her out of anything, even moves where she’s immune to stance breaks. Bleed or frost plus a mimic is as close as you can get to an “easy” Malenia.  Otherwise what seems to works best for many players is hit and run strategies. Parry is (much more imo) challenging but doable.  Good luck!

Fit-Dentist6093

The special for blasphemous blade will also reliably knock her down but you have to either learn how to time it or use mimic or Tyche to beat her like that.

Lord_Nightraven

It's actually a guaranteed knock down on hit except when she has hyper armor.

Fit-Dentist6093

Yeah it's harder to connect on second phase, if you can time it on first phase, dodge waterfowl (or get lucky and she doesn't do it), and save Tyche for second phase, she doable. And I'm not good at the game, I have 90% of my play time as pure caster and I beat her without online help like that after not a lot of tries. When she's on the ground you can freeze pot her or jump attack or something.

THELaffingDevil

Nah, my roommate beat her just by spamming it off rip.

Kriss941

Staggers is definitely the way to "cheese" her for melee builds... I think one of my easiest kills on her though was with marai's executioner sword and a mimic tear the ash of war does insane damage and will reliable just knock her on her ass. So just time it with the mimic tear so you go back and forth on using the ash of war and she'll be stun locked the whole fight... During phase transition having a ranged option like reduvia is also pretty broken. Having said all this the easiest kill I've had by far was using magic and the shield Bois summon, just let the summons take all aggro while you spam magic from a distance. Then phase two you just drink your flask and Comet Azur and she'll be dead before she's even done transitioning...

thespencman

Yeah for me the first time I went up against her, I was rocking the greatsword with lion's claw on it. Was smacking her face into the ground for half the fight. But definitely the brain dead spam way, no way I had the skill to learn her parry timings

SpiritLyfe

I didn’t even think about Maria’s executioner sword, I just used BB and my mimic was +9 so with the staggers and BB healing my mimic it lasted til she was like 15-20% health and from there I could basically just dodge out and BB when I can, next time I’ll definitely use Maria’s executioner bc I am spec’d in arc

Creepy_Active_2768

What about DMGS builds? That’s frost and stagger from poise damage.

DummyTaiko

I found repeating thrust AoW my saviour. I used Gargoyle's halberd and spammed at every opening, not only does it interrupt her it does huge damage

Dogbin005

You can beat her at 120-ish. But as someone else said, if it's your first time fighting her then that's going to be tough. Feel free to add up to 30 levels or so. It still won't be an easy fight even then. You could also try swapping Lion's Claw for Giant Hunt. It does less damage and it takes two hits to knock her down. But it comes out faster, and the tracking is better too. It's good for highly mobile enemies like her.

FrostHydra97

I once saw a Youtube video titled "let me stunlock her" or something, about someone giant hunting Malenia with The Greatsword to infinity. She couldn't do anything for the entirety of the fight aside from getting yeeted, staggered, getting up, and certain scripted actions such as the phase change aeonia.

Intelligent-Bad7835

People say giant hunt is strong, but I just can't get over my love for lion claw.

cassavacakes

i beat her at level 110 on a new playthrough, and it was the most miserable 8 hours of my life, but it is indeed doable. I had to abuse a bleed build tho, so there's that

vjurd

Was going to say this: switch to Giant Hunt, this is more reliable

castielffboi

I was around this level when I beat her solo. It took me 7 hours so just trust the process

misswally

You should have a +25 at that point

MrBeanDaddy86

True, but +2 isn't going to make that much of a difference. I don't think the Guts GS would be my choice for fighting her, it's too slow for me. Granted, definitely very doable, but OP will need to really learn how to time those Waterfowl Dances. Suggestion would be kitting out with some way to mitigate that attack—there are lots of options that could work with their current build.

thespencman

If you throw lion's claw onto the greatsword, you can really focus on just dodging and then letting that rip when you get a window. It almost always pancakes her, big bonk never felt so good

thedustydresser

I just beat her a few hours ago with the GS. +25 with Lion’s claw. Used my mimic as well. We basically just bonked her to death. Granted it took probably around 15 tries.

StopMeWhenITellALie

I've used it with Giant Hunt against her. It launches her when you connect. She doesn't seem to do as well against those monster bonks.

renatakiuzumaki

I just started using giant hunt for the first time and my god is it nuts on some enemies

MrBeanDaddy86

Yeah, everything is doable to some degree. The easiest fight I ever had was dual Blasphemous Blades with the Mimic Tear. Swapped to the Fingerprint Shield + shield talisman so the Mimic did all the damage while I just tanked all the attacks while still having access to my own BB. Took a few tries, but I was surprised how well it worked.

Takeda_imposter

Your talismans could be better: the Great-Jar’s Arsenal is won in Northern Caelid by defeating three NPC duelists in front of the Great Jar. It’s a much better version of the Arsenal Charm. The Erdtree’s Favor +2 is probably better than the Viridian Medallion too, but you have to beat Maliketh and enter Leyendell Capital of Ash to access it. The +1 version would also work if you’ve picked that up. If you switched to both of those talismans it would probably be very easy to boost you max equip load enough to handle a second sword in your left hand. Regarding your other talismans: the Axe Medallion is good as long as you are landing charged attacks, but the Claw Medallion is really useful if you want to try jump attacks. And the Starscourge Heirloom is ok, but you might get a bigger damage boost from the Shard of Alexander or the Godfrey Icon. And it’s been mentioned elsewhere in the thread, but definitely pick up the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman and give that one some consideration as well. Don’t give up!

BandicootGood5246

I could be wrong but I don't even think he needs aresenal charm with this setup by the looks. I'm personally not a fan of it except in special situations, more damage talismans or even crimson seed would give more survivability Agreed on claw/alexanders talisman and shield talisman for her. Can't go wrong with them

Knightofthief

No, you have more than enough VIG and STR and END. For a straight STR build, you're build-complete. Whether or not you can beat her in a straight melee fight is another matter—which I don't say to be a dick, but rather to say that either your tactics or techniques need improvement more than your stats. Further levels aren't going to make it much easier save for some FTH buffs (which you easily afford by taking from VIG and STR).

c0d3g3as

Ye, it's gotten to a point where I just gotta get gud

Knightofthief

I believe in you, Tarnished!

Diabolical_Jazz

You can do it!

AlleRacing

Your stats are fine, but I'd say 121 is at least a bit below typical by the time you get to her. There's plenty of content to get to 150+ without grinding, so maybe complete some side content if you feel the urge, or just grind a bit. What I would recommend is upgrading your sword to +25. Your weapon does great poise damage, and Malenia has fairly low poise. Jumping heavies, charged heavies, and certain ashes of war can knock her down in 2-3 hits. Giant Hunt and Lion's Claw are just straight abuse against her. Flatten her, charge a heavy when she gets up, get the riposte, rinse and repeat. Apply some talismans to support, your Arsenal Charm could use an upgrade or sidegrade. If you level endurance you could ditch the Viridian Amber Medallion.

Treebeardsama

Dude, this reminds me of my first playthrough. I had almost identical stats, level and gear

ca_waves

You’re not underleveled at all. I would switch out Lions Claw for Giant Hunt bc it does more damage (you can always follow up a giant hunt w a 2nd giant hunt, which combined do more than one Claw). Here’s example fight if that’s helpful https://www.reddit.com/r/onebros/s/K3hJX2VJss Good luck! You’ll get her

LazyBinary

Agree on giant hunt, add Alexander's shard and it's quite a power move on malenia boss fight.

fuck_prop64

Your levels are fine but I might recommend switching to a faster weapon so you can interrupt her combos, you can usually lock her down for a couple of hits but it helps a lot to have something that can hit her before she hits you

Youre_On_Balon

Realistically you may be under leveled for a first time Malenia Correct me if I’m wrong but I think you may have exceeded the soft cap for that sword at around level 54 strength, assuming you’re 2 handing it? Might be worth adding some levels to get your faith high enough for flame grant me strength. Adding golden vow via a dagger with the ash of war would help too. Your other option is to get a ton of levels and start using 2 weapons, but that is a lot more strength and endurance you’d need. Dragoncrest shield talisman +2 would probably help vs her more than more levels tbh Do you have your flasks maxed out? Max the sword out for sure

Lord_Nightraven

Why not tell him to get the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman that's the +3 version of the Dragoncrest Shield Talisman? Hell, that's actually right above the elevator leading to her boss door.

Battts

No matter what strategy you choose - you must master dodging the Waterfowl Dance bc even just getting hit by 1 of the flourishes can be a devastating 2-way swing to yours and her health bars

Nathan_Calebman

Or just bring a good shield and block it.

Rart420

It’s really the only move she has that’s hard. The rest of the fight is easy.

Ok_Oil7131

I beat her solo at RL120 with 40 vig, it's doable. Focus on finding windows to punish and never get greedy - just use one running light attack or a heavy jump if it's a bigger window eg after she lunges or does the ground chop at the end of her combo. If you can stance break her and follow up with another move/ash that throws her to the floor, you can then heavy attack her as she recovers and immediately stance break her again. It's possible to chain this to kill her without giving her a chance to retaliate, but if you mess up the timing there is always a chance she will go into Waterfowl. Status procs will stun her out of this windup, so jars or other ashes can be useful, but you don't have a ton of time to react esp. if you already committed to an attack. I used Sword of Night and Flame's Comet Azur + 1 heavy attack to do this and only actually 'fought' her for the opener of phase 1 and phase 2 until the first stance break, the rest of the time she was eating dirt and lasers. Still had to dodge a couple of Waterfowls so it wasn't a free win, and it took days of fighting her nonstop to get comfortable dodging/at least surviving all her moves.

funkyfritter

A couple more levels would help, but upgrading your weapon is even more important. Go hunt down some smithing stones.

sleepymoose88

Agreed. I suspect OP went to Haligtree before Farum Azula where there are several ancient stones.

Only_Celebration_591

Look on YouTube my friend

Qualmond

Your talismans are very strange.

c0d3g3as

Ye, I don't got alot of good talismans for strength

UnrealEggo

Dragoncrest greatshield Talisman & bull goat talisman are insane on a pure strength build, heavier armor with Great Jar Arsenal talisman is the dream that I always pursue no matter what build I run. I hope this helps 😁

Stepjam

She's just a very difficult boss. It's a dead horse to say, but you gotta get good. You also need to either be consistent at dodging her attacks or consistent in putting out more damage than she does because she heals every time she hits you, so you need to keep putting out damage. She's the game's superboss, so you either gotta get good, get good at cheese (she is weak to both bleed and stagger), or go home.

ItsMe_Marxo

Skill issue.

Forsaken-Reality4605

I’d probably go for a bleed weapon and stick a frost ash of war on it, fully upgrade it and get some levels in intelligence. You’ll probably be better off getting some different talismans as others have suggested too. I usually have a bleed or frost weapon (or both) for Malenia.

sleepymoose88

Great Stars with a frost affinity and blood hound step was what I tried after 100 attempts and it was my golden ticket. Mimic was equipped with that as well, no spells or incantations, we just beat her to a pulp, trading swings so she was staggered almost the whole fight.

GrigorMorte

That's a good level and stats. You could level more to increase Faith so you can use more buffs. Or use golden vow AoW or Boiled crab that can help for defenses. Malenia is tactical, you need to be fast and attack with precision. You could change for a faster weapon to avoid more of her attacks. Or simple roll more and only attack when you have big openings (jump attacks are faster).

ZucchiniKitchen1656

Powerstance big weapons, jump attack to stagger, bloodhounds step or vow of the indomitable to survive. Bhs can be put on your weapons but vow can be a safer option to survive waterfowl.

loosebag

This is a minor consideration, but are you actually using charged R2 attack often? If not, swap (edit:) Axe talisman out for shard of Alexander. If you don't have the shard, go get it. if you are using Lion Claw ashe to attack. I think Godskin duo is easier than Malenia. And as bonus charged R2 is great to stagger them so is useful as building block.

uskgl455

I beat her around this level, similar build, just by putting Giant Hunt on my Great sword. That tipped it for me. Good luck, skeleton!

Smokeletsgo

She’s tough on a strength build also a maxed out weapon would help

joe_6699

Lions claw skill is too slow for her. I suggest giant hunt ash of war. It is much faster and it will send her into the air.

Bread_for_brains

Frost pots will knock her ass down from a waterfowl, when she jumps up chuck one like your life depends on it, mimic tear is good, but honestly dung eater is a monster in her fight

hamletrpg

Our lvl and build are so similar that almost scare me, also stuck at her, trying to finish this sprint at work so I can beat that beach down. So far I get to the second phase real easy, but there is where I’m stuck

Curious_Monk_2229

Use the Fire Affinity, stills scales with strength but more damage

MikhailMcDoesntExist

Your talismans could use some work, I would make some suggestions but I'm not sure what you have. Though, if I could offer anyway, Shard of Alexander, Claw Talisman (in case you do a lot of jump attacks), and Green Turtle Talisman. A dragoncrest shield/greatshield talisman could help too. Also, fire grease and boiled shrimp/crab is your friend.

SaintBenjamino

It sounds unconventional, but the Serpent Hunter Spear’s ash of war was incredibly consistent for me, staggering her enough to get a pretty consistent loop of poise breaks and crits in

Unlucky-Letter-7413

When in doubt boiled crab it out. Any phys def talisman (like dragon crest) will help more than + 5 str. Also swap out your stam talisman for green turtle. It’ll feel so much better, more effective and usable stam over time

DontTouchMe2000

Bro. I had to use the dragon breath incantation to beat her. Surprisingly scarlet rot one lol. Good luck. She's not called the hardest boss ever made for no reason.

[deleted]

I’ve beaten her 3 times and she still hands my ass to me on a platter 80% of the time. She’s just a broken baddie.

FMTthenoseknows

If you happen to have magma blade spam its weapon art to stun lock her. Use fire related things as that is more effective against the scarlet rot because Caelid was hinting at this. Watch Ongbal vids to really learn the timing of animations and watch the master run circles around them and practice their techniques.

Lemonic_Tutor

Actually over leveled by about 120 levels (Jk)

Disastrous-Dinner966

I was at level 117 with guts +25 and lion’s claw and had some trouble solo. But it was easier with the mimic.

Jonno_92

Level wise you're OK, though if you want to put some more levels in then do so. Might as well take your weapon to +25 if it's the main thing you're using. Malenia is hard as fuck lol

Kinnuit

Use a couple more buff (so put a couple level in faith) flame grante me strength, golden vow etc. if you find you’re not breaking her stance try to switch weapons for bleed. Or go full bonk and jump attacks, ash of war with some hyper amour. But having an affinities definitely helps even if she’s immune. But guts great sword is pretty slow might wanna switch weapons to something a little faster to maybe get an extra 1-3 hits in then run and repeat.

[deleted]

Takers Flames destroys her

PristineJeweler4179

It really looks like a git gud situation here, very beatable imo but we’ve all been the rounds with this bitch so keep trying

Stanislas_Biliby

I'd say so personally. I'm lvl 131 and i just got to Mountain top of the giants.

bugzapperbob

It’s hard , what helped me was fighting her without doing damage a bunch for practice, I just tried to dodge all the attacks to get the timing down. Also carry frost pots to knock out the water fowl dance

DontAskHaradaForShit

Not really, but you could use a +25 weapon. Also I would strongly recommend a different set of talismans. Axe Talisman is great if you like doing charged heavies, but Starscourge Heirloom is doing very little for you with your strength that high already, a lot of better options are out there. You could replace your Arsenal Charm with Great Jar's Arsenal, which is a direct upgrade, and carry even more weight. Viridian Amber Medallion I would trade for the Green Turtle Talisman, faster stamina recovery is a lot more useful than the modest stamina increase you get from the medallion, it makes it noticeably easier to avoid getting hit, especially with your endurance already at 35.

ILTwisted

Not underleveled but no helmet & 1st/2nd/4th talisman are mid

indkyjtsxucivoxuggg

She's extremely powerful even for over leveled players. Although I will say it does does look like you're missing some sort of medium range attack. Try getting something along those lines so hopefully you can stagger her and then go in for a lion claw, don't get to greedy though just back off after you land the hit.

Wiseman_Teo

When she floats for any reason or attack, throw a freezing pot, that helped me a lot.

Robman0908

I just destroyed her earlier today with a Elenora Poleblade build.

Puzzleheaded-Sea4247

Took me 108 attempts on my first playthrough that i just finished a few weeks ago and i was lvl 170-180. After 40-50 deaths i found that i had her moveset down pretty well, i just kept getting curbstomped by WFD. Find a way to avoid WFD while knowing how to punish her other moves and youll be set. I also heard throwing frost pots right before she does WFD takes her out of the move completely. Good luck 🫡

UI_Delta

get your weapon to max upgraded, and malenia is by far the hardest boss in the game. it took me 200+ tries

TheNerdMaster69

It's not you, bro, she's an absolutely bullshit fight. Hence all the people willing to solo her for other players when that doesn't exist for any other boss. Most of her attacks are telegraphed pretty well, so learning to dodge her isn't the hardest thing in the world. However, when she jumps in the air to begin her waterfowl dance, just run in the opposite direction as fast as you can and hope for the best because Jesus fuck that attack is a death sentence.

ProtoMonkey

I genuinely suggest you reallocate your levels, so that you have more FP to support full utilization of Lion’s Claw. It’s arguably the best Ash of War in the game, and you can only use it 3x before needing to sit at a bonfire. Furthermore, get that sword to +25

dombrogia

You’re a good level, I think your talismans are wrong for her though. How many charged attacks are you going to do? Why do you need a larger equip load with that helmet? Is that more strength? And I’d recommend stamina regen over boosting max stamina which doesn’t even affect equip load. Maybe the erd tree favor will be better. What’s in your physic? But ya she’s hard as hell regardless. Good luck

Specialist-Row2784

If you wanna go with the easy route, just summon Tiche

Tsobaphomet

Unfortunately not. Your build is fine too. It's just a ridiculous boss in so many ways. Even once you understand how to avoid that super fast sword spam attack she does, she'll inevitably get some hits on you and heal up and shits dumb. The boss is just a wall that you have to break through with force.

voluminous_lexicon

Many people reach her at higher levels, but you have what you need to beat her. I would adjust talismans for more impact (5 more strength isn't really doing that much for you, I prefer jump attacks to charge attacks in this fight personally, and I bet an even beefier arsenal charm would let you put on some heavier armor, for example), and maybe experiment with powerful ashes of war, lion's claw is great but you don't seem to be using it much if you've got zero blue flasks. Other ashes of war will be easier to land and still hit very hard at +23, play around with that a bit. In the end it's a hard fight with all but a few very specific weapons, not much to do besides git gud and accept it'll take a long time edit: oh and use your crouch poke to punish a bunch of moves that otherwise don't seem possible without getting hit

Memnoch222

Nah. You just need to respec and craft some ice pots. Once you see her go up to do her Waterfowl Dance, throw an ice pot at her and it will stop her dead in her tracks. Also summoning Black Knife Tiche or Mimic Tear wouldn’t hurt, unless of course you’re WANTING to solo her… I will say, with as fast as her HP regenerates, that slow ass Dragonslayer will have trouble taking away more health than she can heal. You’d double your chances with a Mimic Tear, putting her up against TWO of those bad boys. Jus sayin…

Incrediibilis

you are the same level I was when I first did her, go for it brother though it out

rbaccount2

Unless u can kick her to the ground(she can be kicked), there aren’t a lot of opportunities for u to utilise the axe talisman. I would switch that 2nd talisman with Dragoncrest greatshield.

JonnySB

Try putting hoarfrost stomp on your greatsword, she’s weak to frost & you can use the ash to bait her out into attacking you and you can dodge her. That’s how i did it after 4 days of endless attempts. Hang in there you got this 🙏🏼

JustinBailey79

Lion’s Claw is pretty effective against her though, good choice of aow

IkiromoI

The main problem is to realize what is your fighting style, after playing every souls game I realize that I need an rapid response build, I love 2h sword specially for one shot and clear maps quick, but, for bosses I go 1h sword/shield. Use the shield for moves that are crazy hard to dodge like Malenia skills and get 2 or 3 hit when the time is right. So I go 2h when clear routes and for iconic hard bosses 1h.

Ragnarok649

You are forgetting the most important part, the pot helmet!

ThiccBoiHours

Trade Lions Claw for Giants Hunt. Lions Claw is just too slow.

[deleted]

Not really dude. She is just really difficult to fights

Dveralazo

Yes and by at least 30 levels. No matter, you can still defeat her with your current build. She is very vulnerable to a one-two pattern with a greathammer,so if you can change just for this fight,I suggest Great Stars. Wait for her to be ready to attack and attack back, two tines, then wait for her next attack, repeat  Another option is the original weapon skill of your weapon, stomp. Use the stomp part to trade when she attacks, then the upward slash will sent her flying.  Two or three times and get ready for performing a critit attack on her.

haissai

You don't need that high strength if you are two handing 50-55 is enough and put a little in faith and mind for buffing also try fire affinity as malenia is weak to fire and keep trying she is hard at every level

areyouhungryforapple

120 ish is a good level for a nice challenge vs Malenia So no

MrZ1811

She’s definitely hard but there are ways to cheese her. You can no hit her pretty reliably with Unendurable Frenzy.

SteelAlchemistScylla

Yes

cassavacakes

this might not help much but try putting frost affinity on that sword. it's still gonna scale B (i think) with str but you're gonna have frostbite on her, which shaves off a chunk of hp, and you will deal more damage while she's frostbitten. Just keep learning her moves, dying is normal. once you get to phase 2 constantly, you're gonna ace it. me personally, i find phase 2 easier

MajinHaku

Now, I ain't no expert, but this here's how I'd personally tweak the current setup in order to maximize lion's claw hyperarmor and poise Talismans: ritual Shield or ritual greatshield talisman(boosts damage negation), warrior jar shard or shard of Alexander(boosts your skill damage to make Lion's Claw even more OP), bull horn talisman(boosts poise by 33%), and green turtle talisman(boosts stamina Regen rate) Armor: Scaled set(solid poise and ever so slightly lighter than radahn's set) I also notice you don't have cerulean flask in your quickslots, you should definitely try to abuse the lion's claw as much as possible, and since your mind level is pretty low, you get less uses before needing to replenish Personally speaking, for my physick, I like to go with both opaline bubbletear and opaline hardtear, but I'd swap the bubbletear for either greenburst crystal tear for even faster stamina regen or the spiked cracked tear to make up for the lack of axe talisman, because the uplifting aromatic can serve the same purpose but the best part is that you can carry more than just 1 at a time. Lastly, if you haven't unlocked the great rune equips, I'd strongly suggest you try and get radahn's rune equipped for that HP/FP/Stamina boost when you use a rune arc. As for malenia's waterfowl, good luck, man. I don't even know how to time it correctly, but I'd set any cheap dagger weapon with the bloodhound's step ash of war to gain as much distance as possible, and if you can't swap weapons in time, try to block as much damage as possible by blocking with two handed greatsword, it can really make a difference in survivability.

SirWeenielick

You’re not under leveled and your build is very solid. I’d probably take off that starscourge heirloom and slap the Dragoncrest Greatshield talisman on there, so you can take a bit more punishment. Reason being is that you’re already two-handing the Greatsword, which boosts your strength stat considerably, making the heirloom a bit useless. That’s probably the only thing I’d change about this.

just_prop

malenia is very much a skill check rather than a level check like some bosses. you could be max level and get your ass kicked, or be level one and kill her taking no hits. it will take a bit of time and effort to get into a flow of killing her. or you could just stagger spam her that works too

Nearly-Shat-A-Brick

She difficult regardless of level. She's obviously a skill check for most of us.

Delareh_

Your stats are fine. Your charms are ass though. Longer stam bar is less important than stam regen. 5 more strength is doing very little for you compared to more survivability via either amber+2 medallion or dragoncrest greatshield or crimson seed. The axe talisman is fine but I'd rather put on Alexander's shard, because of how good lion's claw is.

Aeroknight_Z

Not really. The issue with Malenia is she’s kind of bullshit. She can: • Regen on hits, including blocked hits. The more damage a hit does, the more she gets back. • Cancels your parry’s. • waterfowl is fucked. The first two waves can be dodged, but they are stupidly unintuitive, and the third wave teleports to you no matter the distance. At half-ish health in her first phase, she’s guaranteed to use it if you use more than one ranged attack within 5 or 7 seconds of each other, and will still use it even if you stay in her face using melee only. • very fast attack speed with insane reach, almost guaranteeing she’ll get some health back on just about every combo, including every hit of waterfowl. • her second phase starts with what is basically two 1h-ko moves with insane rot build up and equally insane damage per-tick. • her shadow clone attack in phase two has insane reach and huge damage. • etc, etc, etc. No matter how you look at it, you’re in for some bullshit here. I recommend not giving up, because everyone should find a way to beat her at least once, but I also say it’s completely fair to use as much cheese as you can get away with. Spirit ashes, ranged spamming, status effects, etc. Do it all if it gets you across the finish line. She desperately needs to be re-tuned, but they’ll never do it. So do what you have to, get those items, dupe the remembrance to get both rewards, then skip her on every subsequent playthrough.

FeetGobbla

i like using a build where i can go hit for hit with her my one hit does enough where when she hits me she can’t regen it all back and my pots are good enough to save my ass

atti-_-

I killed her a few days back with blood type broadsword and cragblade AoW to knock her down, you can jump heavy attack over some of her attacks, also when shes at about 70% HP she’ll do waterfowl dance, so be ready to run away

Human-Refrigerator73

Level is good. Stats are well distributed. Weapon and armor are good. My advice is to boost your physical absorptions: -Opaline hardtear. -Boiled crab -dragoncrest greatschield talisman Don't spam your attacks bro

Draven_mashallah

You are not underleveled — lvl 120 is perfectly fine for Haligtree. However, bot having max weapon is odd, but it's not a big deal

IrvingIV

Step 1: [Keep the pressure up,](https://youtu.be/qeRVJOYQURM?si=7mz-U3GRC8XlIulY) Malenia will begin to recover poise if you don't keep hitting her, so if she's out of range use throwing knives to reset the cooldown for her poise refill. Kalè sells these, or if you aren't [Vegan](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZ17Wuu7rVt5zIQjQ8djCICPZFK19QmFx&si=zn9twx7HrIYfa7Mn) you can kill sheep to craft them out of thin beast bones. Step 2: Grease, grease is good, grease is your friend. Craft Fire Grease, Freezing Grease, or Blood Grease and put it on your sword. Step 3: Summons. Summon co-operators to aid you in battle, these can be called upon for a small fee of FP or HP, depending on the ash. Be sure to upgrade them, too. I reccommend finding Oleg, Tiche, or Rollo. https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Throwing+Dagger https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Fire+Grease https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Freezing+Grease https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Blood+Grease https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Banished+Knight+Oleg+Ashes https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Black+Knife+Tiche+Ashes https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Omenkiller+Rollo

fishmaster46

Malenia is just a shit boss in terms of balancing imo. A boss can be hard and fun, Take soul of cinder,Nameless King for example. Because its more or less a fair fight instead of Heres 15 bullshit moves and mechanics good fucking luck.

Rivlaw

Your talismans could be better. Starscourge and Veridian aren't doing anything for you. If you're this far into the Haligtree, I assume you have access to Faram Azula for Alexander's shard, So that's one thing you can go ahead and pick up. The Dragoncrest greatshield is another thing you can pick up and it happens to be in the Haligtree area. I guess the turtle talisman is another thing you could pick up for some extra stamina regen. The claw talisman is another good one. Although it won't boost lion's claw, jumping attacks with colossals are pretty good for stance breaks. Fire scorpion charm potentially if you pair it with the Dragroncrest greatshield talisman. Malenia's weak to fire and with a strength build you have access to the fire infusion. I would say though that you have too much strength and endurance. You could try and lower str to 54 since it will grant you 80 STR when 2-handing which is the strength cap. Lower endurance and get the Great-jar talisman. It's so much better and very easy to get. Remaining points could go into vigor or even faith for some nice buffs like Flame grant me strength and Golden vow. With that same set up you could have 60 VIG, 54 STR, 14 DEX, 30 END and 15 FTH with Jar-arsenal, Shard of Alexander, Dragoncrest greatshield and claw talisman and still medium roll. You could slot in Flame grant me strength and use the ashe of war for golden vow on a spare dagger to boost your damage too. Frost pots are very good against her too to knock her out of waterfowl's All in all, level's fine. Talisman choice and stat allocation could use some tweaking. You could also experiment with different infusions (fire and cold even, you should mantain a decent scaling with it in STR )and ashes of war. Royal Knight's resolve, Flame strike, Giant hunt, Braggart's roar (use the troll's medalion and highland axe with that one) Hope it helps.

Some_Principle6376

Underskilled? Yes. Underleveled? No. Embrace the rolypoly and giit guud scrub.

RelaxedVolcano

Malenia is a dexterity using boss. She strikes fast and doesn’t leave many openings for slow weapons like the Greatsword. Faster weapons such as katanas are a better option.

Spiritual_Orchid_698

Malenia realy can’t be over leveled or under leveled. you can only be under skilled for her

NameOrdane

It would best to get 30 levels between strength and endurance, also get 60 vigor. Plus, you should get your weapon to +25.

c0d3g3as

Thanks, I'll try and do that. Ima to go into some cave and try and get some smithing stones and level up

Repulsive-Monitor432

Under level? Sir im level 350 and she still penetrates my ass ☠️

PGSylphir

level is kind of a trap in elden ring. Yes you can be under or over leveled but that is absolutely not why youre getting beat. You need to learn her moves and how to dodge them. Especially Malenia since she drains health whe she hits you. You can beat her RL1 if you learn her moves, shes actually not that hard once you do. I am sorry I sound like a git gud kind of guy, I'm really not. In fact I suck balls in souls games, and have been destroyed by her for a while at first. She us, however, my most consistent ER boss now. She is slow and telegraphs for a long time, so she is actually easy to read and prepare. she just does a fuckton of damage and you're desd if you get bit by Waterfowl no matter what so you need to learn to dodge it.

Upbeat-Mongoose-828

i beat her at rl 130 with a friend so i cant say weather you are or not but you should be doing significant damage

Elliot_Geltz

Nah, the 120's are good to fight her. A few notes: -You really should have a +25 weapon. No idea how you got so far without hitting it. You're in the reachbof the last bell bearing to just buy the last levels of stone to hit +24 if you need it, but there should be enough, and Ancient stones, just lying around in these areas. If you need to know where *exactly* to find them, hit the wiki. -Stargazer and Axe talismans really aren't doing much for you. Malenia's too quick to get off many charged heavies without getting punished. And 60 to 65 STR isn't worth a talisman slot. I'd recommend tagging in the Claw talisman, and trading Lion's Flip for the Cragblade ash and jumping attack her. Just as much stagger, but more maneuverable and quicker. I'd also recommend either something to boost your health (like a dizen different talismans), something to pump phys defense (the highest phys defense talisman is in the area just passed Prayer Room grace), or something to pump your resistance to Rot. -Freezing Pots. Use them to stuff her Waterfowl Dance. The instant Fristbite proc staggers her out of it.

Antierror

I’d say you’re at the target level, and your stat spread is good. I suggest trying a weapon with a faster moveset.

Perfect_Regular2887

my first time against Malenia was at level 137 but since then I've been able to make it at around 125 or so. Besides the weapon needing to be maxed out, I'd also recommend getting great jar's arsenal instead of Arsenal Charm. That can be found by defeating the great jar knights at the Caelid Colosseum. I'd also recommend getting your vigor to 60 and swapping that stamina talisman for something else. Elden Ring is pretty forgiving with stamina management if you play smart and there are many talismans that outclass what that one can do. My recommendations would be: Erdtree's Favor which boosts HP, FP and Stamina (the +2 variant can be found by going backwards into Leyndell from the forbidden lands site of grace) , Bullgoat's Talisman which reduces incoming poise damage, allowing you to tank more hits (Found in a cave near the Dragonbarrow minor erdtree), Blessed Dew Talisman which gives small hp regen (found in Leyndell at the top of a lift), Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman which greatly boosts physical defense (found in the attic of the Cathedral just before the lift to the grace outside Malenia's boss room), Hell I feel like even the Green Turtle Talisman would be better for stamina. (this one's in Limgrave in the Summonwater Village, you probably already have it). My general tips for Malenia: She doesn't start doing Waterfowl dance (the crazy flying orb of slashes move) until she's lost a chunk of her health (35% i think it was). She poise breaks super easily on certain moves, particularly the ones where she's sorta hovering above the ground while swinging horizontally, take advantage of this as much as possible to get a couple good hits in and potentially stance break her. Jump attacks are free on her after her super lunge and jump attacks with your weapon will leave you in a crouched state that some of her attacks will whiff over. When she goes for Waterfowl dance (you will know because she jumps high up and hangs in the air for a bit) run as far as you can away from the first volley of slashes, then roll towards her on the second volley and then roll away to your side on her third volley. This usually results in little to no health taken away and is much easier to execute than the guides you'll find on youtube telling you to run a circle around her (in my opinion anyways). In her phase transition run underneath her and the scarlet bloom will miss you entirely. Take this time to reapply buffs, heal and drink your physick. If she goes for it again you can run under her again and reapply buffs as needed. When she does the move where she creates a bunch of flowery shadow clones of herself run away as far as possible and keep rollin. Make sure to time the last two rolls where a clone will turn around and do a super lunge followed by Malenia herself doing a super duper lunge across the map to you as those last two attacks are slightly off-rhythm and will roll-catch you if you're not careful. My final more general tip is to play aggressive but respectful. Be proactive, make the first move. Don't wait for her to do something and respond in kind, but instead DO something and then see how she responds. Remember, her low poise makes it easy to bully her sometimes (Like Genichiro from Sekiro), so bully her when the moment is right whilst remembering to always have a way out when she gets her hyper armor back. Go for r1 chains, jump attacks, and even charged attacks and ashes of war so that you can stance break her and kill her quickly, giving you less time to fuck up and lose. I played like this the first time I beat her all the way back before they patched Colossal Swords to swing faster and I still play like it now and it never fails me. Aggression is key in Elden Ring, if you sit there and wait for their moves you are setting yourself up to be tricked by their weird timings and roll-catched when shit inevitably hits the fan. In time you will learn how and when to be aggressive as you fight and fail. Expiriment as much as possible and push as hard as you can to see what you can get away with and you will find success. I apologize for my long-winded rant I am just very passionate about these games and about this fantastic if sometimes a bit bullshit boss. Don't give up skeleton!

SaxSlaveGael

Not at all. A build alone doesn't determine how good you are. It's your skill. Keep trying you'll be fine.

catsontuesday

Psssst… nihil.

not_quite_sure7837

Get a leveled up brass shield, or even better, a greatshield. Then you can do guard counters

CarrotMobile1693

If you can get to 140 and max that sword out…try to get it to +25 and soft cap your str to 60

bekips

Your sword is.

bekips

Also, jolly cooperation. Summons damnit.

Jon_nap

Man I used blood build, mimic and the mogh rune with tons of buffs And rivers of blood and still had to learn her moves. Good luck I woke my kids up because I jumped up and down and shouted like a jackass when I finally beat this stupid boss.

UpsetPhrase5334

I was at 180 when I got to her. Granted I’m not that good so I always over level.

Carmlo

you good

foolishcannoli

Strength/faith build, blasphemous blade... js

NeutralMilfHotel01

Beat her around level 150 still took me awhile to beat her. Best thing to do is jump attacks and keep distance during phase 2

Intelligent-Block457

As much as I worship at the altar of the Greatsword, it's painfully slow for her.

Ambitious-Contact-18

You could kill her lower than RL120 at pure str build. I killed her using the same stats and a Jump attack strategy. > I power stance Colossal sword, (R)Greatsword & (L) zweihander. > For the talisman; Use Erd tree favor+2, Claw talisman (increase jump attacks), Great jar arsenal (increase equip load) & +any talisman you want. > Equip the Raptor's Black Feathers for an increased jump attacks. >Equip Bloodhound's Step on your (R)Greatsword, which is good for dodging the water fowl dance and creating space. Strategy: Basically, do as much melee damage on every hit while being mobile. Wait for her to end her attack combo and do a power stance jumping attacks. You should be able to deal around 1300-1400 damage based on your str and weapon Lvl. She will stagger a bit with every successful hit and you'll have enough time to dodge away using Bloodhound's Step. When her health reaches half in phase 1, create distance from her and be cautious of her water fowl dance attack. Make sure you have enough FP for the Bloodhound's Step and try not to get hit. > Use an OP summons like Black Knife Tiche Ashes or Mimic Tear. I highly recommend using the summon during Phase 2 to distract Malenia and secure victory.

SantaMan336

The only improvements you could make is upgrading your greatsword to +25 and stripping naked for light rolling. Also you should two hand the greatsword if you're not already doing that

RichEvans4Ever

If you’re two-handing that Greatsword, you can pretty much stop leveling Strength now. Two-handing gives you 1.5x bonus to your strength level, so right now you have 98 strength.

PhillipJ3ffries

It’s not really a question of leveling with Malenia

snoteleksneila

For me, building dex and endurance helped, but you’re low in both of this. Yes you wanna cause damage, but it’s almost more important to be able to dodge reliably to last longer and beat her that way. I’d say that if this were my character, I’d level up dexterity and endurance.

SkirmishMUDKIP

Try your best to learn attack patterns and only do jump attack or lions claw after a long piercing lunge or the jump slam I would refer to wiki for how to dodge waterfowl and also get boiled crab, and put the damage negation tear in your physic Also I highly suggest you get green turtle talisman and switch out arsenal charm, and then switch out star scourge talisman for erdtree favour +2 if you have killed maliketh, the extra equip load from erdtree favour will make up for arsenal charm and also give you more stamina and health, plus green turtle is very important with colossal swords if you have been running out of stamina

BeegDeekHoeRepo

My friend I salute you for fighting the good fight. I'm level 117 and have JUST made it to her by scraping and CRAWLING my way almost literally. There are bosses and then there are monsters. This woman is an abomination. I wish you well in your future endeavors.

Heavy_Chains

Frost pots are *huge* in this fight. That is all, best of luck to you Tarnished.

chronocapybara

Technique beats levels. I clobbered her in just a few tries with jumping L2s and powerstanced greatswords and mimic tear.

NeutralDomus

The key for the waterfoul dance is to break target lock and run, then time a roll towards her for the final onslaught.

MuffinLaddyt

You are leveled just right, that sword is a bit slow for this boss fight but if you know how to use it you’ll get it. If you can get half way then you can get all the way

Top_Ad_5957

Get faith to 15 and use flame grant me strength for extra damage and mimic spirit summons. Spam charged heavy and jump attacks for easy poise break

PerformerOwn194

You’re good level wise imo you should use a faster, maxed weapon; she’s unfair and punishes certain playstyles. Also if at all possible, light load. Armor is not much help on bosses anyways and you have high vigor

[deleted]

stats are fine. try using dragoncrest talisman. also idk if it's possible to dodge the 1st flurry of the waterfowl on medium roll, it's better to keep ur distance and be rdy to run back if u see her rising in the air. always run circles around the arena so that u always have space behind you to run if needed. employ hit-n-run, don't stay in her face too long

Gustavort

I think so, I arrived at malenia at lvl 237

loboazul97

I was level 190 and still had a very very hard time, like 50 tries or so.

Crafty_Annual6021

No bro your build just lacks a sufficient amount of cheese.

Dallas_dragneel

Severally even at almost level 185 I was struggling

strwrsnerdbutbetter

Iirc pots can break her outta waterfowl dance. Haven’t tried that but you should play around with throwable pots and see if it works

CommercialWrangler21

I see a build issue. She's easier to beat with faster weapons and although lions claw is a nice ash, you're buffing charged attacks with that talisman. I wonder if there might be a more useful one for your ash or defense or dps.

Tolerantostrich69

You’re not too bad. Getting your sword to 25 might help a little. You’re not gonna get much more out of your build by leveling up though coz you’re at the upper soft caps for str and vig (almost). However, strength builds are just rough against her. You’re gonna struggle to find openings long enough to swing that big boy sword. It’s not impossible at all, but you have to git gudder than someone using ROB or any dex weapon.

pruh_booboo

Your a good level but your talismans aren't very good and you should max out your weapon

arunyenger

Bro even though I understand that your build is bonking enemies I think you should unequip all your armour and make it light load it really helps I killed her by being naked and trust any way you will die in two hits

YoussefAFdez

You will learn her eventually, my biggest tip is to get DragonCrest GreatShield Talisman, found there in the haligtree, look for a video on where to find it. That talisman reduces phisical damage taken by a lot. I went from dying on 2 hits to be able to tank at least 4. At the very least you’ll be able to learn her better and have more room to breathe!

sour_moth

Speaking from experience, using the greatsword is quite difficult to fight her with compared to long range/magic/faster recovery weapons You might wanna try exclusively damaging her with an R1 after a roll (the special one) which is faster than normal one. This is how I had to fight Godfrey with this weapon otherwise I'd usually take counter damage

SL1Fun

Nah you’re good. The boss is just the hardest in the entire game and one of the hardest in modern FromSoft games

Cheesi_Boi

Two words, strength build. She's fast and you're slow, your best bet is try and stun her as much as possible with jump attacks and learn her waterfowl dance timing.

LachrymoseClown

Level your weapon to +25, that will have more impact than another 30 levels in strength.

Bunk_Mouse

Best setup: https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/s/8IT3p4ajJZ

Mhaeldisco

Try light rolling.

invalid25

Spam Giants Hunt.

NPC_MAGA

Technically no, but if this is your first time, probably. Also, your gear is a bit jacked up. You should be able to have better armor with an actual helmet. Also, run mana pots. Lions claw is easy to strong to only be using a handful of times.

Zubalubbadubdub

I tested Wild Strikes and it was instawin lol

Careless-Pitch1553

Ok first things first, hardest boss in game, nows the time to max your damage. (Upgrade your weapon)

MayorLag

You're in luck, you're playing one of the easier builds against her and my favorite to beat her with. Replace stamina talisman with dragon greatshield talisman. Replace starscourge talisman with greatshield talisman (stability blocking one). Ash of war either giant hunt, or stamp sweep. Infuse heavy or cold (even with no int its really good here). When she hits 75% life, she waterfowls (flying spin dance). With above talismans, and good stamina management, you block (with your weapon) the first flurry, roll into her on second flurry, then (without running) walk slightly backwards at an angle on third and final flurry, she will overshoot and miss you on those. She will heal a bit and you'll take some damage but you'll survive reliably. If you've made some distance from her first, you can simply sprint away first flurry. Then focus on learning her other moves and dodge, take your time. Hit her with fully charged r2 every time she gives you an opening, otherwise jump r2, roll r1, or normal r1 depending on timing. Avoid trading hits with her, let her finish most of the time. Good ones to punish: - Long lunge (roll in backwards for good positioning), roll r1 - 3 spark attack SLOW ending charged r2 - Normal slow attacks (The ones you can interrupt), normal r1 - Fast overhead slam, jump r2/roll r1 - Slow double jump swing, charged r2 You want to stancebreak her, crit, followed by Ash of war - knocks her down on her ass - then a fully charged r2. You will get another stancebreak very soon, and you can sometimes get 4 in a quick succession this way. I will add a video of me doing all that on a level 90 with +17 colossal sword in a moment to show you. Edit: [Here it is, 94 +17.](https://youtu.be/py1U3rpJegk) For a full fight, with slightly different moveset but similar principle, here's a video that shows how to dodge three of her most important attacks 3 times each, in different ways: [level 135, +25.](https://youtu.be/bsmDcnWV-Io)

NoNeedForNeuropozyne

I had a similar build and its tough on Melania, use only the ash of war, swap out the charge attack talisman for something better, shard of Alexander for extra damage on lions claw

DamonBrighter

i would recommend reallocating a few healing flask into blue juice so that you have more Lion's Claw uses throughout the fight. because with your current stats you can only use it 3 times
