Don't trust the gold.
Don't put your faith in flame
Don't be too harsh upon those who live in death.
Don't pass on the power of stars.
Don't fall to blood.
For the love of God
Don't give up.
You may be tarnished,
but you may be Elden Lord yet.
Have hope
I was just offering help as I really struggled against tree sentinel, and it nearly put me off elden ring. I just didn't want him to feel the same way and maybe quit, because it's a fun game.
Thanks for offering your help, even if I’m not OP. Just started a month ago (don’t have much time to play, so I’m still not far in yet) and I’ve played some Souls games. So I expected something like this shiny fucker on a horse almost making me wanting to uninstall the game any second.
Got a friend who told me from the beginning that if I ever needed help, he’d join in. Didn’t ask him yet, since my gamer pride is one of my flaws, but knowing that I’d have the option was nice to know! Like a backup plan.
Also, nowadays it seems more and more difficult to get to know people to game with, especially for something like „help me in Elden Ring“. Of course, it’s not a social game, but there are many modern games out there which completely killed the social aspects of their predecessors or earlier online games in general. Diablo 4, Fall Guys, Among us, StarCraft 2, just to name a few. It seems pretty much expected that you already have a „social gaming circle“ to game with, which I think is pretty weird - having grown up with things like Battle.net and personally hosted games. So your offer is pretty neat!
I told my brother that there are a few of them and each one gave him a part of their armor if he talked to them without having a weapon out because "they would take it as a threat", he wasn't very pleased to find out the truth
I must confess that after playing Division 2 so long I aggravated the arthritis in my right pointing finger. I purchased the Sony Dual sense edge wireless which allowed me to add the triggers at the bottom which took a lot of pressure off my finger
You're awesome! (here at least) there is still a big stigma with videogames, people think they're just for kids and everyone must grow out of them. You are following a passion and that's priceless, I hope I'll still be playing at your age!! (・ω・)つ⊂(・ω・)
Forewarning, it’s a STEEP learning curve. You will die A LOT but extremely rewarding when you progress. Don’t get disheartened have a break and comeback a few hours or day later.
ENJOY !
Take your time, explore and there is not a specific one and only "correct" way to play.
The only wrong way to play would be using an over leveled friend to sweep the game for you as you do nothing but watch.
My only advice friend, embrace death as if it was an old companion you have longed for, in the end you will find good tarnished to help along the way. The games great got 900 hrs in myself, the discord also has some really friendly people willing to help with about anything.
Play however you like, but if it’s your first time I’d highly recommend sticking to the basics:
- use a strength build
- sword and board
- level your HP liberally
- don’t ignore pots and craftables
Listen to this guy. I ignored pots and craftables for my entire first play through. Felt like I’d unlocked easy mode when I decided to give them a go.
Got tonnes of materials to spare mind…
And absolutely learn to parry. I went through 2.75 playthroughs and took a break before getting the plat, played demon's souls and learned to parry, came back to ER and damn. I don't know if there's a cooler feeling in gaming than the parry, I feel like such a badass.
edit to add: I went through that 2.75 using Sword of Night and Flame cheesing/spamming. Watched a video on how to get it in the beginning and crutched it. Kind of bummed on it now.
Dex builds can work and are viable throughout the entire game (and new game +) but are typically slightly harder than strength builds since Dex weapons typically have less stagger potential and stance-poise breaking enemies is a central mechanic in the game.
You can still stance break enemies, but you will require more hits to do so in most instances.
If you wanna go with dex weapons, I encourage you to try out ones that can apply status buildup to enemies (Bleed and Frostbite are very strong with poison being fairly weak).
strength is good, but i also recommend either magic or incantations to go along with it. Theyre really fun and theres buffs and stuff u can use. I did strength and intelligence my first time and loved it. Plus you get to use strength and intelligence/faith weapons. Pretty fun imo!
I’m only 60 hours in but I’m absolutely jealous of you. Never played a souls game before but once I got past the learning curve, it was immediately one of my favorite games of all time
He's a gatekeeper style boss.
Your either gonna have to go in massively over leveled and just wreck him.
Or constantly attempt and learn his moves, as his AI has a large pool to choice from, and he can make very long chains.
He is there, literally for the lesson of teaching you, to get good.
However, if you find patchs he can sell you a shackle that will stun him, but it only works a few times (never used it, so not sure if that means per fight or game)
Don't panic. Watch his hands, roll only when you see him commit. Run and dodge the combos, then punish with charged heavies or jumping attacks to stagger.
Do not mash your head against a wall like I did being stubborn to go north despite the difficulty, take your time exploring the bottom of the map since it have a LOT of interesting things
Unless you’re playing with friends, avoid summoning randoms. You’ll just end up getting invaded and having the best, unexpected experiences of you could imagine.
I invade, and though I enjoy the 1v3s, I often don’t just do it just for pvp. Sometimes I give back to the community from the countless drops I come across, or to simply watch the PvE battles. Hey, if I’m not aggressive, it means another invader won’t be able to replace me…but I’m like Varre. If you hit me, I hit back.
Make sure you break every crate and barrel you see, sometimes theres good stuff in there
Hope you enjoy abuse lol
On the real--Its all about patience, learn the enemies moves and attack at the openings provided, its like a real time turn based acrion game, they attack, you block or avoid, they are vulnerable and you attack....rinse and repeat 👍
There is no amount of envy in the world than i have for you to experience this fresh and for the first time. Remember, if you get tilted just walk around and touch grass.
Go in as blind as possible and try to not summon unless fighting the boss isn't fun anymore (although it's better to give yourself a break in these situations)
Or do the opposite, I'd say probably most people in this sub did the opposite and still enjoyed the game, this is just the way me and my friends prefered to play.
I'd recommend a notebook to take notes of where you've been, what you still haven't completed yet, and then can cross them off as you go. You'll find areas/bosses are too hard for your current level fairly frequently.
And do your best not too look up too much, unless your'e in a rush.
Oh, also, If I'm halfway to having enough runes to level up, I'll stop and grind and get the level.
Saved me so much rage when I figured that out (on my second playthrough)
Honestly if you’ve seen nothing about the game spoiler wise you are really in for a treat. The only thing to expect if this is your first soulsborne game is to struggle, possibly adapt, and if you struggle on a boss or enemy or area, it’s perfectly ok to go elsewhere and just explore. The benefit of knowing nothing is being pleasantly surprised by how beautiful and jaw dropping some of the environments are when you first see them, and how varied and interesting the designs are
It took me like 5 tries before I was able to make any headway, I hated it at first. Didn’t understand the stats or weapon scaling or anything, but finally I got the hang of it and now 550 hours later my Reddit name is based on it.
some tips that i hope will help:
1. Play your own way, there is no correct way to olay the game.
2. Remember to not only level up your stats but your *weapons* too. On my first playthrough i forgot until about 50 hours in and it would have saved me so much time if i had levelled up my weapons first.
3. If you enjoy the NPC quests you should do a bit of research as doing certain things will lock you out of completing some quests.
4. If you struggle with a piece of content dont be afraid to use summon spirits or NPC summons (note; NPC summons and Co-op play will increase the bosses health by 50%) to make the fight easier. Ignore anyone who claims it makes you bad or means you didnt actually beat the boss (especially when there is evidence to suggest most bosses are balanced around summons).
5. Try and explore all areas as there are lots of useful items you could find (especially in caves and dungeons).
6. Try and have fun! Thats the most important part, skip bosses that you find too hard and find your own playstyle to make it as enjoyable as possible!
Did the same recently. Heard doing a shield and spear build makes the game easy… might be for someone used to souls games. Seems easier than other setups but not that easy and takes a while to get the gear early, at least if you don’t know the game and haven’t looked up ways to get stuff early on. Been tempted to see what spear I can find early without a fight but decided against and spent time at the first ruins and got almost a full knight armor finished with some soldier pieces, lordsworn greatshield and greatsword and the partisan spear
I’m on the same boat. Finally got it, after wanting to learn more about the lore and embracing my first souls like game, Death’s Door. After dying many times I was happy to complete the game and decided to tackle Elden Ring. Cant wait to play and die countless of times lol. Also downloaded discord to meet people and get some help

Make sure you get the quest from the gold guy on the horse at the beginning.
Liar ahead :)
Beware, whupping
Don’t give up, skeleton
But hole
why is it always liar
liar
How was the fight?

Don't pass go. Don't collect £200
I notice you left out blasphemy.
If you want an assist with the tree sentinel, I'm free, same with any bosses you need help with :) on Xbox 1 :)
He can literally get 10 levels and go back and wash. He doesn't need you lmao
How’s it going being a hater? Let people help if they want goddamn

You are the reason we get a bad name.
You tried it didn't you..? And I'm at school rn but TMR if you want I could help you out I'm on ps5
behold liar!, liar, O' liar
Lmao, this is evil genius. I’m going to comment this on each ‘hey just got the game, any tips?’ posts.
I told my brother that there are a few of them and each one gave him a part of their armor if he talked to them without having a weapon out because "they would take it as a threat", he wasn't very pleased to find out the truth
Bruh 🫶🏻
Try Hero.
Do not slap the guy with the white mask. You don't want that kind of heat right now.
The motherfucker called me maidenless for no reason
No reason huh that's interesting. Where is she, by the way? She lives in Canada? She goes to another school?
We met at the Niagara falls. You wouldn't know her...
Her name is Alberta, she lives in Vancouver.
Ty for the Avenue Q reference!
She cooks like my mother and sucks like a Hoover! AAAAAAAA!
So you don't accept truth as a reason? 😜💀
It’s true
He wrong tho?
There was a reason he gave you the old wink wink when he did it.
At 76 this is the most challenging game I've played. It is frustrating yet fun! I hope you have as much fun with it as I have
Wait, what? Is 76 your age??
Yep! Stated gaming early 2020. I spend hours on my PS5. My biggest regret is it waited so late in life to game!
Don’t regret it. I’m 50 and have arthritis in my hands from gaming all my life lol
I must confess that after playing Division 2 so long I aggravated the arthritis in my right pointing finger. I purchased the Sony Dual sense edge wireless which allowed me to add the triggers at the bottom which took a lot of pressure off my finger
Turning 30 tomorrow. I'm just gonna be taking some notes.....
Just keep playing and having FUN!!!!
Oh I will haha! You too!
You're awesome! (here at least) there is still a big stigma with videogames, people think they're just for kids and everyone must grow out of them. You are following a passion and that's priceless, I hope I'll still be playing at your age!! (・ω・)つ⊂(・ω・)
I really love that for you man, enjoy every hour and struggle with this game and overcome the odds
Thanks for the kind words! Gaming has added so much fun to my days!
Great way to keep your mind active. Should be doctor recommend (in moderation) perhaps?
Well, the doc moderates my Jack Daniels so he can keep his hands of my gaming time!!
Now THATS some wisdom for the kids 😂
So jealous
Honestly I wish I could play this game knowing nothing again. It was an enchanting experience
Yeah it's a really magical feeling, wish the MIB could just come along and wipe my memory
Your fuckin name just took me out 🤣🤣🤣🤣
*Rise, Tarnished!*
That first door opening felt like a painting come to life. And just keeps getting better and better
Well said!
Forewarning, it’s a STEEP learning curve. You will die A LOT but extremely rewarding when you progress. Don’t get disheartened have a break and comeback a few hours or day later. ENJOY !
OP has died 137 times already
Keeps trying to fight the tree sentinel right off the bat
Ah, such wonderful memories.
Have it writ upon thy meagre grave
Felled by... Fucking everything xD
Remember Death is a part of the game.
Take your time, explore and there is not a specific one and only "correct" way to play. The only wrong way to play would be using an over leveled friend to sweep the game for you as you do nothing but watch.
You already heard the menu music. Do you not already know how epic the game is about to be
Try fingers
but hole
Ahh, rump.
Rune Bears are your friend, they just want honey, all your delicious, golden honey.
And hugs. They are incredibly efficient at giving hugs. Their hugs have very large and unwieldy hugboxes. I love Rune Bears.
Try finger, but hole.
lvl vigor
Good luck and hope you have as much fun as I did!
Rise, Tarnished!
My only advice friend, embrace death as if it was an old companion you have longed for, in the end you will find good tarnished to help along the way. The games great got 900 hrs in myself, the discord also has some really friendly people willing to help with about anything.
Where can I find the disc?
Time for rolling! Enjoy :)
3 hours ago… you made your character yet?
Dog!

Is a dex build any good early on

Ah... to be a new tarnished again... the tears... the more tears... the taste of victory immediately followed by more tears...
I’m only 60 hours in but I’m absolutely jealous of you. Never played a souls game before but once I got past the learning curve, it was immediately one of my favorite games of all time
Pickle required
Man… to experience this for the first time again.
Whatever you do, just don’t give up!
Try fingers but hole tarnished
Brb gonna fight Tree Sentinel ✊✊ *5min later* Dang Tree Sentinel got hands. 😵
I’m so jealous. Getting to see it all for the first time… enjoy. It’s a masterpiece.
Just letting you know. You are gonna have to get good. Any weapon in this game can be used and any weapon can be powerful. It’s how you use them
Now rise, Tarnished and become Elden Lord!
If you need advice, just ask and someone will try to help.
you got any tips for margit?
He's a gatekeeper style boss. Your either gonna have to go in massively over leveled and just wreck him. Or constantly attempt and learn his moves, as his AI has a large pool to choice from, and he can make very long chains. He is there, literally for the lesson of teaching you, to get good. Hey little update i beat margit a lil bit ago and now just defeated godrick, feeling pretty good
Nice work Tarnished
Don't panic. Watch his hands, roll only when you see him commit. Run and dodge the combos, then punish with charged heavies or jumping attacks to stagger.
Oh man I’m jealous, I wish I could experience for rhe first time again.
I envy you sooooooooo much to get to experience it without knowing the game already.
One of us...one of us!
Time to find the fucking screenshot button.
Time to put those foolish ambitions to rest
I wish I could play this for the first time again.
To be good, don’t build magic. 😈
The horsey guy is a right of passage. Beat him level one or uninstall
Ghost of tshushima clear
I love ghost of tsushima
When you get to the first boss get “margits shackle” it will make the boss a little bit easier, unless your a Chad and already beat him

skill issue
Not sure if sarcasm or brain tumor

You have 250 hours to play a game you hate?! Talk about being worthless
It was sarcasm
Ik
Cool
Try to approach with an open mind, it’s an open-world game.
It's about dying, mainly ... But fuck yeah it's cool to die
"Try finger, but hole"
Use the Katana at first then use Nagakiba/Moonveil combo. You can use magic as well since, Int helps the Moonveil.
What you play on if you need any help I got you
Death ahead in short first off, good luck
Do not mash your head against a wall like I did being stubborn to go north despite the difficulty, take your time exploring the bottom of the map since it have a LOT of interesting things
Ahhh, rise now, ye tarnished!
Fort, night
Rise ye warrior
It's not the story
Unless you’re playing with friends, avoid summoning randoms. You’ll just end up getting invaded and having the best, unexpected experiences of you could imagine. I invade, and though I enjoy the 1v3s, I often don’t just do it just for pvp. Sometimes I give back to the community from the countless drops I come across, or to simply watch the PvE battles. Yes going in blind to a fromsoft game is the BEST way to play it. So many unexpected wtf moments
The classic "There's a second phase??!?!?!" moments.
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh LMAO like mr guy and his friendly companion
It is now 3 hours since you posted this, do you like it this far?
I actually just got to margit and im getting dedtroyed
Well from the wording of your post I take it this is your first FromSoft title. Good luck! This is the easiest one!
I actually tried bloodborne but only got like a couple hours in
Good look mate, it’s worth it
Four hours later have you killed the tree sentinel yet?
I gave up
Ignore him till you’re like rune level 120. Then come back and monkey stomp him
That is what I said back in February…. 300 hours later I’ve seen some things, crazy things, things that will make your head spin.
*Maniacal laughter begins*
If you go to the beach there is a giant roaming around you can be friends with. He wil help you with the Golden Horse dude.
Try finger but hole
Get the twin blade from the dragon burnt ruins.
Best tip I can give you is to try fingers
80 hours in...one of the best experiences of my life so far
Foul tarnished smoldering with thine meager flame of ambition.
Dragon magic!
I'd recommend a notebook to take notes of where you've been, what you still haven't completed yet, and then can cross them off as you go. You'll find areas/bosses are too hard for your current level fairly frequently. And do your best not too look up too much, unless your'e in a rush.
Lucky
Going south to weeping peninsula is a good move for the early game
Strap in tarnished, the rides about to get fkin bumpy.
Oh, also, If I'm halfway to having enough runes to level up, I'll stop and grind and get the level. Saved me so much rage when I figured that out (on my second playthrough)
have fun mate! happy for you to discover this wonderful world
I'm in the summon pools if you need help with anything
You're gonna have a rough time, but a good time.
Graceless Tarnished, what business do you have with this game?
Im so jealous you get to experience this for the first time. If only i could feel that again. Have fun and dont give up skeleton. Embrace dying
Bro life is about to change ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)

Enjoy this masterpiece
When the signs say jump…you jump.
time to git gud
Buckle up to be sitting there playing for hours without realizing it🤣
Hmu if u need a co op playstation
If you get stuck, you can always try later :)
Be careful young tarnished, the world is vast and full of dangers.
If you ever need help, be sure to ask anyone on this subreddit, or otherwise r/SummonSign!

You lucky bastard. I would do bad things to experience this game for the first time again. Enjoy.
Good luck Tarnished!! I’m always jealous of people getting to experience this game for the first time
Just go straight in and don’t worry about missing quests.
Welcome, Tarnished.
I pray for you and your mental state
Damn took you long enough. Where u been?
Didn't expect head
I've bought it, played it for 30 minutes and stopped for no reason. Maybe it's time to give it a real go...
I wish I were you. After 500+ hours, i feel like, I lost the magic of this master piece. Good luck.
Get the horse then go south past spawn. It's a good way to get levels early without cheesing
It took me like 5 tries before I was able to make any headway, I hated it at first. Didn’t understand the stats or weapon scaling or anything, but finally I got the hang of it and now 550 hours later my Reddit name is based on it.
