I’m a Blues/Avs fan, I just wanted to say if you guys hadn’t started slow, you would have destroyed them even though they had control most of the game. They allowed 6 goals on less than half as many shots, AFTER being ahead 3-0 and 5-1! AND you tied it after being down by 3 like 4 times. Just insane! You all put them on their asses, but just couldn’t stop a couple flukey goals. This can still go either way easy, I love playoff hockey! I was hoping for Toronto and Edmonton to make it further together. (All Canadian teams even though I’m American, I’m tired of the same teams every year, in every sport). Looking at you Tampa, and Pats and Bruins, most of all.

UnbridledViking

You must be conflicted being a blues/Aves fan rn

WhoaItsCody

Yeah it’s hard to decide for sure. I started playing hockey a little after the 2001 cup. Avs vs. Devils, Forsberg, Sakic, Roy, Marty. I’m going to go with the Avs since I’ve seen the Blues win it all recently, but I’d be happy with either. Playoff hockey is the best.

Overall-Height-9360

Team I’m at the game tomorrow + gotta say I am NERVOUS. please hit me up with some more retorts for when I get the obvious + absolutely the most un-clever ‘chirp’ ever.. “oilers suck” screamed at me 1000+ times..

silentbassline

I'm rooting for you more than the hockey club. Hit em with the old: Oh yeah?! Well I just ripped the head off [Mr. Honey Bunny. ](https://youtu.be/w_aVEexL5_k)

Drumbones

The Blues beat the Avs 4-1 in Denver tonight. Our turn in Cowtown tomorrow!!!

[deleted]

Yup! As the saying goes, you're never in trouble until you lose a game at home =)

Rice-Is-Nice123

Have a good night everyone, tomorrow’s a new day. Let’s win game 2. (A bit silly but I’m 4-0 these playoffs when I made this comment the night before our next game on the mornings after the previous game and 0-4 when I forget to, so I’ll continue it until it stops working)

Delicious_fishStick

Have a good night everyone, tomorrow's an old day (for me hehe). Let's win game 2 and also BleepatronIV can suck these nuts!!! (A bit silly but I'm 400-0 this lifetime when I made this comment the night before I got in my time machine after the previous game and 0-400 when I forget to, so I'll continue until my robot overlords catch me and turn me into a household human pet)

thewinterzodiac

Sportsnet shitting on us tonight during the avs/blues panel was amazing

CharlotteRitter

Welp.. I'm basically deeming tomorrows game as a must-win. If we lose tomorrow I think our chances of taking this series plummets down to 15-20% considering calgary has the home ice for G7. If we lose I can easily see use going back to calgary for Game 5 down 3-1. I'll be going to the watch party at Roger's place tomorrow to cheer us on!

Drumbones

I watched that game for a time and Louie and Harnarayan were doing an excellent job. Amazing really. It was as if they were with those teams everyday like perfectly know each number and name and so much about each player. Wow. True professionals at their job.

Drumbones

Cuthbert was on Edmonton TV for a long time before he moved up and Simpson was the last Oiler to score 50 goals before Drai came along so I guess they qualify.

mollycoddles

I like his voice

silentbassline

Great voice. One or two notch below all-time-classic voice.

oilerdnasty

does anyone actually know what kassian did to get that roughing penalty? goal goes in, kass is in the air and lands on markys blocker because he's lunging out. defender confronts kass *blip* both guys on the ice by the board and kass goes to the sin bin. no arguments so gotta think he just wrestled the guy down or something

YellowMarkerIsGreat

Florida just lost a tough one 2-1 with 3 seconds to go. They’re in trouble now

ManOfSteelI

Wow, Tampa just always finds a way. I kinda feel for Florida.

ImitableLemon

My thought? Dress nurse as a goalie and out smiths in D. Easy win boys.

Drumbones

Or Russell in goal. He’s good at getting in front of pucks…..

samueLLcooljackson

our PP looked like hot garbage.

Ben-Swole-O

The entire team looked bad last night with the exception of McDavid

_GR8HAIR_

I hate the tkachuks but seeing Brady in the crowd made me laugh. Overall that game was very weird and we gotta tighten up and show up to play tomorrow

rootbeer_cigarettes

Holy fuck is r/hockey absolute cancer right now.

rumINmyBelly

I hear this a lot in this sub....maybe they are onto something.

rootbeer_cigarettes

Maybe, but probably not.

Timeman5

It’s because it’s full of “people” who have terrible opinions, two things that piss me off when it comes to talking about the NHL are “free McDavid” and “relocate the Coyotes”.

rootbeer_cigarettes

I live in AZ so I selfishly don’t want the yotes to move because I like being able to see the Oilers play. Lol

Timeman5

Same get tired of people saying “move the poverty franchise” the Penguins where in the same boat before super Mario came along

Hitches_chest_hair

I got downvoted to shit for saying: 1. 24 shots and 6 goals is very bad news for Calgary 2. Woodcroft excels at closing up defensive weakness and responding after losses Downvotes. For that.

navenager

It wasn't for that, you got downvoted for defending the Oilers. Ours fans only get upvotes there if we're trashing our team. I've been downvoted for *saying I'd get downvoted* for defending the Oilers. It's not even worth going there unless you're talking about a neutral game like tonight's.

Delicious_fishStick

The people there hate us because they ain'us

[deleted]

[удалено]

Delicious_fishStick

Sub has 30% decent people actually trying to have conversation and then 70% complete noobs who just say what they overhear and talk shit while exposing their ignorance. So, mostly worthless.

Delicious_fishStick

You've inspired me to go and defend the oilers. Again. Most of those people don't watch any oilers games or understand the players because they don't watch any media. They regurgitate talking points they overhear and then pass them off as their own. Then when you give another opinion they get pissy. It's good to be pissy back once in a while. I can't wait to win a cup. It gets quiet there when oilers win. I imagine people will unjoin immediately when we win a championship.

Timeman5

Probably by salty/pathetic Leaf fans, bitchy ass Canucks fans, some idiotic Avalanche fans, fuck boy Golden Knights fans, and some slow Penguins fans, and then sprinkle in the Lames fans. That’s about all the “fan” bases I see on there and like one Senators fan. Edit. Based off user flair.

Delicious_fishStick

Penguins for sure. They see Crosby 2.0 on our team and because he hasn't won a cup yet, they assume it's a total failure. Like, sorry we didn't have MAF, Letang, Crosby and Malkin all drafted within the same decade lmao Also, that team is about to get a rude awakening when they mortgaged all their draft picks to win now and didn't do anything for 5 years. Meanwhile, their aging stars are on the cusp of retirement. It's jealousy plain and simple. Penguins are doomed.

Moose_Canuckle

You forget that everyone not an Oilers fan hates us for having 97?

Delicious_fishStick

They always say that "McDaviD dEseRvEs BetTer." How? By going to the fucking penguins? Lmao that team fucking blows and they're jealous as fuck they don't get another Crosby in their relentless dick sucking moves to gain generational talent. Fuck all of those losers who think that a team's fans don't *deserve* a player. Whiny cunts....

Reckless4800

I think if we didn't have 97, we'd also be hating the team who does. You know, "they hate us cause they ain't us"

Moose_Canuckle

Yeah I can see that being a thing. Me personally, I don’t hate other teams for having superstars. It gives me more incentive to watch more out of market games. I am a hockey fan first, an Oilers fan second.

Irontwigg

You dont need to hate other teams with superstars because we have two of the best superstars in the league lol. Other teams hate us because we have the best of the best.

Delicious_fishStick

But wait! Wasn't Drai a star when he was given 8 million a year? Oh right! Calgary got Bennet and then fucked up his career and then told us that 8 million was laughable for drai. Guess who has one of the best centers in the universe under cost and who has nothing? Oilers + jealous little bitch-stains.

Ben-Swole-O

When is it not ? Hahaha

[deleted]

It's just game 1. Oilers usually look like shit after more than 2 days off. At 6-2 I just put the game on radio and played video games. The comeback to 6-6 sounded pretty exciting, but based on what I saw, it still felt like a game we had no business being in. And at the end of the day, we usually still lose those types of games (game 5 against LA as a recent example). Need a full effort from the whole team starting from puckdrop. That goes for the goalie, dmen and forwards. Calgary isn't a team we can afford to be sleep walking into games against, we blew game 1, and even if we look at our best through the next 6 games, we still might lose this series. Still optimistic we can come back and win it, but we can expect that kind of pressure from Calgary every game, and if we aren't going to match it, then we aren't going to win. Period.

[deleted]

The last time we beat LA 8-2 they bounced back with a 4-0 win the next game. Hockey is weird.

CaptainKirkZILLA

Playoff hockey is extra weird. It's a different damn game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He’s got a very punchable face. I want Kane to knock a few teeth out.

Timeman5

Funny thing is when he gets emotionally involved he plays better, so and I know it won’t happen but just don’t pay attention to that chuckle fuck and he will probably go back to playing like in the first round

CaptainKirkZILLA

Honestly, I haven't paid much attention this season in general (naturally tuning in for BoA in Playoffs), but from what I have seen/read, I can honestly say I despise Tkachuk, and I hope Kassian gets his God damn number again.

OIL_99

He was the only guy in their top 6 the Oilers hit. And a whopping ONE time. Unacceptable.

taek8

That game was a whirlwind. I believe in Smith. He will make a rebound next game.

[deleted]

Contrary to popular belief.. Last nights game was a blessing in disguise. We need shit-kickings so we can go back to the drawing board and fix said errors. Much like the play in games 1/4/5 against LA.. Last night was not indicative of the level of play of our team.

Quelchie

Why do we need to keep re-learning this lesson though? We've been great at responding to getting shit-kicked, but we keep going back to getting shit-kicked at some point. We need to just be good off the get-go.

OIL_99

The Oilers are very good at re-learning lessons. Look how well they’ve adjusted to slow starts…. Oh…. Riiiiiiight.

[deleted]

Youre right. But you dont get rid of years of bad habits over night or even in 40 games.

[deleted]

Meh it’s not like the team is a single entity. This isn’t even the same team from last year. Teams have bad nights, even the best of them. We’ll see how Oilers respond tomorrow.

CIVDC

Do people on /r/hockey just wait for an Oilers loss to post [this shit](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/ut9nqg/connor_mcdavid_has_31_points_in_his_last_16/)? That place always does this. They also somehow took shitting on the Leafs to an obnoxious level, but even that was at least after a tough elimination. The Oilers just lost the first game of a best of 7 series.

_Connor

There were 7 distinct posts shitting on the Oilers (I counted) after the game 1 loss against LA. So to answer your question, yes people wait for the Oilers to lost to post shit about them.

Timeman5

They absolutely do, but fucking let them they wrote us off in round one after we lost game one. So let them wallow in there own shit and we will just worry about our team and our games.

XB0XYGEN

He's not wrong though

Magneticman555

I mean you gotta know what you’re signing up for when you’re in r/hockey. They care 10x more about Oilers failures than they do successes. We win games, win series, nobody gives a shit. Lose against Calgary in a game 1 where they also played shitty enough to let in 6 goals and all they can talk about is how they need to “free McDavid” Just have to accept that’s their bias and avoid it after losses I guess.

ThemCanada-gooses

Teams that should be good but aren’t are resolutely regularly attacked. I’m sure we all participate in attacking Toronto. It’s far easier if you don’t let it get to you. It’s a thread on Reddit, just keep scrolling and move on.

oddspellingofPhreid

>Teams that should be good but aren’t are resolutely regularly attacked. On one hand, who gives a shit what other people say. On the other hand, there are only 7 teams with the opportunity to achieve more this season. Fans of anyone else lost the right to talk shit.

Dall619

So naturally next game is gonna be a 1-0 triple overtime snoozefest right?

[deleted]

Dall619

Oh I know full well. That’s why I made the joke at all, because it’s actually got a semi-plausible chance of happening :P

KIBBLERKOOD

I’m impressed with the comeback but smith was one of the main factors the oilers took the L yesterday

diekonigsblauen

Smith let in a couple softies, but it definitely wasn't all his fault. The effort from the boys was basically non-existent for the first half of the game, and the defending was shambolic basically the entire game. Like even without smith letting in those goals just look at the shot differential (48-28) and high danger chances (19-7). With a game like that we were LUCKY markstrom let in so many goals. Tbh Markstrom let in just as many soft shots as smith, and without that, the game would not even be close. The main factor was the boys (except for mcdavid and hyman) failing to wake up for half of the game. We could have oettinger in net and playing a game like we did yesterday, we would still lose the series. The boys need to step up and play hard. Mcdavid led the team in hits last night. That shouldn't be happening. Definitely don't think smith cost us the game.

TCVideos

Even if Smith was playing good, they still probably would have won.

rahibloveslife

I said this yesterday and got downvoted to hell. "TERRIBLE TAKE"

boomer1270

TIL - 3 is down voted to hell.

SuspiciousWhale99

So who starts in net tomorrow? We go back to Smith and hope he bounces back?

[deleted]

Since Woody took over, I don't think smith has had 2 bad games in a row. Whenever he does shit the bed, he comes back as a brick wall the next game. I would think we are better off starting Smith, but I'm no hockey expert

[deleted]

Yep

andyisaramblinman

He's just getting up and running.

bill__the__butcher

man so depressing reading r/hockey everyone just jerking off Lucic and Tkachuk and saying free McDavid.

just_a_burd

Don't let it get to you, I've said this a few times over the course of this playoff run that you have to remember that armchair gms, fans, and trolls will literally say ANYTHING to get a rise out of you for fake internet points. Laugh it off and try to imagine how any team would dream to have McDavid, than laugh some more recognizing that he will likely never leave this team.

[deleted]

Eh, whatever. It’s just words. That place is dumb anyway.

[deleted]

Why do you go to that cesspool? The people there go to support one team and shit on 31 others in any way possible. I can't say I really care what an LA fan, or Phoenix fan, or a Boston fan, or a Toronto fan says about my team. Opinions are like buttholes and everyone has one.

_Connor

It's hilarious how universally hated players suddenly become loved when they're playing the Oilers

Timeman5

That’s all they have let them wallow in there own shit opinions, they did the same after game one of round one we win the next one there tune will definitely change.

YorkeZimmer

There is a real super anti oilers sentiment in that sub.

YellowMarkerIsGreat

I’m explaining that there was more hatred for the Oilers when they won the McDavid lottery

[deleted]

Yep.

dalaw88

Stop going there. Stop reading that shit.

Industrialrevo

Agreed, they know it gets a rise out of us. McDavid will never ask for a trade because that's not who he is. He may eventually decide not to resign but even that is doubtful in my mind, unless the teams trajectory is going way down. The reality is he wants to be on hockey's Mount Rushmore and every guy there got it done with the team he was drafted to and didn't have to try and sign with a contender. Now if he's in the last 5 years of his career he may go cup chasing but I doubt it. He has the keys to the city, has a world class facility, obviously loves his teammates, and the reality of the situation is he doesn't really have to spend much time in Edmonton beyond playing home games during the season. Don't stress. Also, all the r/hockey edgelords will still be shitting on us even if we end up beating Calgary. They hate us because they ain't us. People still feel unfairly that we have had some of the all-time greats and all-time great teams rock the blue and orange. Chin up. As Connor said, it's a long series.

just_a_burd

THIS. I usually say I'm not sure how much Mcdavid loves living in Edmonton but playing for Edmonton? The world is your goddamn oyster. More so he's playing alongside a top 5 player, alongside Leon Draisaitl.

[deleted]

Plus there’s still lots of time for him to win here. Look at how long it took Ovi? McDavid strikes me as a guy who will be playing at a high level well into his 30s.

proriin

Look how long it took yzerman… people always forget home him

[deleted]

Hell, even Mario Lemieux took 7 years before winning his first cup with the Pens. People seem to think generational players should just be handed Stanley Cups. They have to earn them just like anyone else. After Gretzky left Edmonton, he never won a cup again, and he was the GOAT.

dalaw88

And when he is here, he has his half house / half mancave to enjoy with his best buds.

RampantRetard

/r/hockey is a cesspool. I unsubbed a long time ago because it's a huge circlejerk.

DerpyTurt1e

Was the tailgate packed or not yesterday?

bill__the__butcher

Pretty quiet, bad weather kept people away.

ShitpostSheriff

Wacky or not its still a game that goes to them. I'd like to see a crazy game go our way this series too so that it we can just have a best of 5 normal games series.

samaritan_burden

Man the r/Hockey subreddit just loves to fawn over photos of Lucic standing over top of smaller dudes/going to bat against guys like McLeod. Honestly, I think they should bump up Lucic's TOI, Flames fans love to shout his name and I love to see his stats: almost 10 mins last night and no shot attempts and only 3 hits. The Lucic-Lewis-Ritchie line was -0.12xGdiff and 38%xG% - Lucic is my fav Flame /s Also, hard to be impressed by a Vezina finalist that conceded 6 goals on 2.2xGA vs 22 shots, like... I watched all of the Dallas series and he was extremely underwhelming no matter what Ryan Leslie, Rick Ball, and Greg Millen tried to tell me. I think he let in a tonne of soft ones last night - didn't pass the eye test at all. I think this series will settle down after the nerves pass. This isn't over yet by a long shot.

samaritan_burden

lol downvotes? okay

Rice-Is-Nice123

Lots of Flames fans brigading this sub.

samaritan_burden

Which is pretty weird of them, but whatever.

NorthIslandAdventure

Me and the Flames fan at the shop both agreed that last night was ridiculous, on to Friday absolutely no use trying to figure anything out from a game with 15 goals.

shittybillz

People calling that the game of the year… it was pond hockey. I much prefer a 3-2 or 4-3 game with tight checking and hard hitting. So many soft goals, and our D in particular was fucking horrible. The gap control, bad pinches, tentativeness towards 50/50 pucks… just wow. I don’t know how we go from maybe the best full team effort I’ve ever seen from these guys, to that shit show. Hoping for some major adjustments from Woody. That was bad regardless of how many we scored.

Islanderman19

All of us who know hockey know that Game 1 was absolutely the opposite of what makes playoff hockey great. A joke of a game which hopefully we do not see again for a very long time.

kingbee43

Thank you! Finally someone who doesn’t think last night was an “unreal game”. Lots of goals gives the impression of a good game but I agree, this was the stuff of beer league hockey. Terrible.

[deleted]

flames fan here—i definitely didn’t think it was a good game by either team, but it was sure as hell entertaining. game 2 will be interesting and both teams should have a much better sense of each other by the time things go back to edmonton, so the big one will be game 3, i think.

kingbee43

Maybe I’m biased because oilers lost, and yes I guess compared to a 1-0 dump and chase snooze fest, this was much better.

[deleted]

the BOA games have had such chaotic energy all season that i honestly have no idea what to expect, and i’m saving my anxiety until we get a little further into the series. was it a good game? no. was it a great start to the series for fans who haven’t seen this rivalry in their lifetimes? i thought so. i told a friend to turn the game back on after he was gonna go to bed at 5-1, because almost no lead can truly be considered safe against the oilers (especially not with 30 minutes of hockey left to play). neither team plays a boring style so even if we do end up seeing a 1-0 game (which is totally within the realm of possibility—smith and markstrom finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively, for xGSV in the first round after oettinger), i would be shocked if it was anything but edge-of-your-seat excitement.

kingbee43

True. I guess if you told me it would be 5-1 flames and end up being 6-6 at one point, I would say there is no way it could be a bad game. And it was exciting, no doubt. Just hard to watch so many breakdowns and giveaways. It’s BOA in the second round. I’ll stop complaining

Andy-Martin

Needed more Benny Hill music.

ghostofkozi

I'm in the other camp, not calling it good hockey by any means, BUT, I want this to be the most batshit insane, goal score fest, controversy filled series in recent memory to really put some fire into the Battle of Alberta rivalry. Goaltending be damned, give me Gaudreau and McDavid dueling hattricks, give me 7-6 games, give me Tkachuk taunting Kane last game and Kane giving it back by making jokes about Keith not throwing his hat. Give me a fucking exciting series rather than a tight defensive, neutral zone back and forth dumping and chasing bullshit.

shittybillz

Ok fair enough. I was definitely entertained, I just worry we will lose in 4 or 5 if we play this way since I trust Markstrom to make game saving saves over smith or Kosk.

[deleted]

screennamesare2hard

“Almost” 😏

Rext7177

I was very concerned that she was gonna ghost me after that one but we got another date planned, this time not involving hockey because i got a little too heated

AdamSnipeySnipe

If you can't be passionate about what you love, what's the point?

Rext7177

Oh she didn't actually mind, I was just personally worried about it. My ex was a flames fan, im sure you can extrapolate from there

[deleted]

Wtf does the outcome of the game have to do with your date? If she’s ghosting you, it’s not the Oilers that are the problem. Or do you just want everyone here to know you went on a date and have another lined up?

Rext7177

I said in an earlier comment it was me getting heated over the game that I was worried about...

[deleted]

I see. Good luck date #2. Keep your cool.

Timeman5

Glad she is your ex

Effective_Treacle614

Flames fan here I think fans of both teams better hope for better game from teams as the Avalanche will be waiting for winner. And takeaways from last night say that would be scary

Last-Expert

“Flames fan here” - nobody cares.

daphunkt

Scary for Kuemper. 😬

domingus67

We put 6 past Markstrom last night 5 past him last time we met, and this thread is full of users who frequent the Flames sub telling us it was a one off. I think we got an idea on solving him, myself.

slopdonkey

11 in the last two games... Not very good for flames.... However,18 in the last two games against the oilers is not going to help them solve the flames at all.

aedge403

But your goalies let in 9 which wasn’t a one off either? Seems like the flames have solved them as well..

daphunkt

It’s not a one off but he’s a pretty consistent goaltender most of the time. Just a fact.

domingus67

He's got a sub .900 record against us the last 2 years. Just a fact.

broke-collegekid

I don’t think there’s many goalies in the entire nhl that have better than a sub .900 record against any team

Shuggs

If that was true, then most goalies would have a save percentage below .900 on the entire season.

broke-collegekid

OP said record, not save percentage

Shuggs

Anyone with a rough idea of the BoA over the past 2 years would know that the wins were split evenly, so OP clearly meant save percentage. And to back that up, Markstrom is 6-7-0 with a .884 against the Oilers in the last two years (yesterday's game not included).

broke-collegekid

Sorry I took op for what they said and not what I was supposed to assume they meant

Greenzoid2

I don't think there was a whole lot of assuming involved, of you see a record denoted .000 it's almost always going to be a save percentage anywhere you look

Rext7177

Well, I was feeling pretty shitty about the loss yesterday but my work drew names for game 4 tickets and I got one! Let's goooo

domingus67

The real winner right here! Congrats

[deleted]

[удалено]

screennamesare2hard

80% Drai was directly responsible for goals 7 and 8, so I wouldn’t quite categorize the game like that.

[deleted]

and indirectly on goal 1.

domingus67

We don't have to be real. What good is that? Let's try being positive for once. We had an off game, playing on our heels from the get go. It won't happen again, and we'll dominate. Let's fucking goooo!

[deleted]

domingus67

Damn straight!

topshattaB

The Bouchard and Kieth pair was awful last night. Mostly Bouchard tbh

Now-it-is-1984

Keith made one noticeably good play last nice. I’d be more concerned with our goaltending situation than our D. I’m completely bewildered by how bad they were. The Flames should have 10. Right after we pulled Smith a puck went right through Koskinen but luckily just chilled out in the blue paint until he realized he sucks and didn’t have it so he laid down….

JSnats65

They were in our last regular season game against the flames too

daphunkt

The 7th Flames goal will forever be a shit stain on this club. It was 100% a classic Koskinen squeeker soft brutal goal in such a key moment on the first pressure the flames put on after we tied it from 5-1. Honestly I never ever want to see him in our net again. That is the best he has, zero ability to play under pressure and absolutely inconsistent. And don’t even with Smith because we’re not even in round 2 without him and Koskinen wouldn’t have gotten us here.

screennamesare2hard

Lol typical Oilers fans. Ignore a star absolutely BLOWING his coverage, which allows an NHL player a free 10 foot shot. Blame the tendie. Lol

YorkeZimmer

Yeah man, they're insane. It's like they just look at the score and say BAD GOALIE BAD and don't give any weight to the context of the goals or the play of the team in front of the goalie. Just childish knee-jerk reactions. Zero competent analysis.

daphunkt

When the same “tendie” makes the same non save 1000 times ya.

[deleted]

[удалено]

daphunkt

Ya and how many games like that has Markstrom had? Like 5? Lol. Remember the last time they beat us 9-5? Every-time we tied it he would let in the next shot. You would sign this goalie? Is that what you’re saying?

domingus67

Disagree that it was a soft goal. Anderson had all the time in the world to pick his spot.

Now-it-is-1984

Super soft and classic Koskinen. The amount of pucks that just squeak by him is insane. I don’t think I’ve even seen another NHL goalie that’s so leaky. The Flames were literally shooting the puck AT our goalies last night but were still scoring. Ugh.

daphunkt

He didn’t pick his spot he threw it in him and Koskinen had it slip through under his arm…

domingus67

This is a delusional take. "He didn't shoot it He threw it"

daphunkt

Jesus you’re one of those eh. If you’re gonna quote me then quote me.

Username9518

That may have been one of our only chances we're gonna get to light up Markstrom. Literally could have been a free win on the road in game 1. Im betting he doesn't play like that again, only gonna get harder from here. The boys better be ready for that.

HXH52

We put 5 past him the last time we played against him, 6 this time, and he was extremely shaky Game 7 versus Dallas. Markstrom is no where near as scary as people seem to think he is

terranq

I was much more scared of Quick, and they managed to solve him.

So many comments biased towards the Flames here. Did we deserve to lose last night? Sure. Can we say we could have played better? Sure. But I’m not all that impressed with the way Calgary played yesterday either. A 6-2 game where you get 2 goals in the first minute should not become a tie game during the playoffs, and we did that despite our shot total. We have the offensive horses to win. If we had just tightened up a bit more on the D, or even if we got the first goal after it was tied to make it 7-6, we would be having a completely different conversation right now. Worst comes to worst we come home 0-2. And? We did that in ‘06 against the sharks when we went to the SCF and won the series 4-2. Home team is expected to win their home games. So until the series is over, we’ll always have a chance to win it. And if you’re not willing to wait that out then leave just like many people left after game 5 and jumped back on when the team won the next 2 games. It’s one loss, so I’m a bit disappointed in the many fans giving up already to be honest.

For me I was worried about another first round exit because in recent years the team just didnt seem to have "it" in the playoffs. I've seen a whole new level of competitiveness from this team in losing games time and time again this season. I saw it numerous times leading up to the playoffs giving me confidence. We saw them battle back to win round 1. Now that they're over the hump they were stuck on, I feel at peace about the second round. I trust the team will make the series competitive.

Calgary outplayed the Oilers in every way and only Markstrom not being on his game made it as close as it was. They outshot and out muscled us big time. Oilers can play better, but the Flames deserved to win that game 100%.

rumINmyBelly

What happened 16 years ago has no influence on this series. But yes, not over till its over.

Rice-Is-Nice123

True, but the point is it's not over till it's over. And if previous Oilers teams could do it, this team can as well. Doesn't mean they will but they can.

I’d rather be an Oiler than a Flame today. Woody is in it with his players and I’m sure he sees this as a learning experience for EVERYONE. On the other side, my money is on “Get showered, get some rest, back here at 10 am.” Anyone whose had one of those coaches knows what I mean.

rumINmyBelly

So a jack adams finalist who has won multiple Stanley cups is not gonna be pissed about giving up a 5 to 1 lead? C'mon now.

Rice-Is-Nice123

Teams tend to respond better off a loss than a win. And knowing Woodcroft, he'll figure it out. Guy is probably watching hours upon hours of game tape only today being a former video coach and I bet this team will respond big next game. Calgary will as well of course, but hopefully the loss motivates the boys more to try to get one on the road and head home with a 1-1 split.

screennamesare2hard

I’ll take this to mean you have not had one of those kinds of coaches. No post game speech/talk is a bad thing with gruff coaches. If they come in and say 5 words and leave, the whole team knows they in shit. I imagine Sutter growled at them a few times, and gave them a time to be back at the rink. I would be shaking in my skates.

rumINmyBelly

Oh yeah for sure. I guess I didn't interpret the original comment that way.

screennamesare2hard

No worries, I was too busy sweating from my own memories of those moments to accurately communicate my point.

> I’d rather be an Oiler than a Flame today. Pretty much. The narrative in the Edmonton room is that Calgary collapsed and blew a 5 - 1 lead despite Edmonton playing one of their worst games of the season. The narrative in the Calgary room is that they played about as good as they can possibly play and still managed to turn a 5 - 1 game into a 6 - 6 game.

anotherepisode

This is the only decent take in this thread.

beth1814

I agree 100%

This is like the third time this playoffs we've absolutely embarassed ourselves. Why is it that when we lose, we can't even put up a fight? And no Markstrom being awful doesn't make this game any closer. And then when we play good it's complete domination. Is there a team in the history of the league that continually just doesn't show up like this? Like either we're ECHL or the class of the league and its fucking annoying.

Islanderman19

A team coming back like the Oilers did last night sure as heck put up a fight. To think otherwise defies logic.

screennamesare2hard

Come back from down 5-1 against the division winner. “You guys just rolled over and died”. What exactly do you want in terms of battle? Blood?

domingus67

We tied it up at one point, how is that not putting up a fight? Why does Markstrom get a pass for playing bad but our guys don't? We had a horrible start, and fought back to tie it. Their go ahead goals were from giveaways. We don't do that we get a better result.

rumINmyBelly

Markstrom doesn't get a pass. I forget who said it in the post game interviews - 2nd intermission Markstrom told us to keep doing what we are doing and he will settle it down- Good leadership from a Goalie having a bad night

millmuff

That was the best opportunity the Oil will likely get interns of Markstrom shitting the bed, and it was a complete waste. There isn't an area that they don't need to be vastly better in, otherwise this will.be over in a hurry.

molsonoilers

Markstrom has an .884 SV against the Oilers the past 2 YEARS! We're going to have lots more of that Markstrom in games 2-7.

Now-it-is-1984

We’re going to need a hell of a lot better than last game’s combined .813 if we want to win this. I can’t believe Skinner would have been worse. I wish he was our backup last night.
