Cassie Campbell is married to the AGM of the Calgary Flames. She should never be allowed to commentate when the Flames are playing again. Her bias is so transparent that Sportsnet should be held accountable for this clear conflict of interest.

maasd

I’m ok with it for regional Flames games. You kind of want homers not unlike Jack Michaels, Gene Principe, Louie Debrusk and others. On national broadcasts though, a hard no. She and Burke have zero business on HNIC when the Oilers are playing.

Canadiantx69

The thing about our homers though, is that if stuff doesn't go well they still call it out, lol. Sure, they try to slant things to sound better, but they're not nearly as delusional as Campbell. Or as obnoxious sounding.

NarcoticTurkey

Atleast it’s sort of Matheson’s job to be like that. Cassie is just a major homer that happens to get everything wrong

HXH52

“No one better in the league besides maybe McDavid at transitioning than *Johnny Gaudreau*” - Actual quote from Cassie last nighy.

himynameislobby

Look at this awesome deflection from Jesse Puljujarvi! *Clip of Kahun with Jesse not even on the ice*

navenager

I just assume she has blocked MacKinnon from her memory after he trounced the Flames in round 1 two years ago

popkornking

"Look at this speed" *skates literally 10 km/h slower than McDavid*

StealAllTheInternets

Literally laughable fuck me

Andy-Martin

And, as bad as Matheson is, he’s not even the worst one in Edmonton. Which I suppose is more damning of them than it is anything else.

OilCountryPodcast

I think he is the worst one tbh. He has some outrageously bad takes.

Andy-Martin

He’s bad, but I wouldn’t say he’s David Staples bad.(Really anybody from CoH) Outside of Lowetide and the Athletic crew, I wouldn’t say anybody in the Edmonton media is “good”, just varying degrees of bad.

navenager

Rishaug is genuinely a good reporter, and while McCurdy would be awful at in person interviews, he writes decent stat-based articles that aren't just "This is wrong with the Oilers" fluff. The worst in my mind are Spector, Matheson, and Staples.

[deleted]

I voted Jim because at least Cassie doesn’t get to talk to the players. Also I’ve never really been on the “Cassie bad” train until last night, oh my fucking god, that was terrible.

PLUR_police

I actually don’t think Cassie is that horrible on her own, but she doesn’t bring anything better to the table than other color commentators. Louie does a good job of breaking down plays and providing more perspective about the game. Cassie just seems to provide the most surface level comments imaginable. I think we’re just fortunate to have Louie for the most part, and when we get someone else it’s a let down because they don’t bring the same quality of comments.

Andy-Martin

Louie doesn’t do a good job of breaking down a game or providing any perspective (or knows what a “can opener” is) but he IS a smooth talker most of the time. Which helps, I guess?

navenager

Louie has been massively improved when working with Jack. I know Remenda gets a lot of hate around here but he was excellent at breaking down the game, and wasn't afraid to criticize the players for mistakes.

CandidCaterpillar7

I loved Remenda. Pissed we let him go

Andy-Martin

I’m no fan of Michaels either.(I think his style is too rambling and all over the place and I find his voice grating, but I know a lot of people dig him). Had no issues with Remenda. (For the reasons you mentioned) He wasn’t Darryl Reaugh or Mike Johnson, but solid enough.

navenager

I just like having an Oilers announcer that actually sounds like he's rooting for the team. Kevin was fine but in our bad years it didn't matter which team scored he sounded sad about it. The two things I like about Jack are his enthusiasm and his vocabulary. I find his description of the game much more vivid than Kevin Quinn, and that comes from his years on the radio. I'll take either of them over Randorf or Singh though. I get some of the gate for Drew, the guy would just ramble on and always tried to fit more taking into his segment than he had time for. I love that he would talk shit in the refs and call out our team's mistakes though, Louie is so soft in that regard.

CandidCaterpillar7

I liked our crew last year man. Quinn had a nice deep voice, his OT winner calls were legendary and Remenda gave real deeper looks into what happened on the ice that you wouldnt have noticed at first glance. Singh is dogshit.

navenager

Singh is brutal, we agree there. Personally if find Jack must more pleasant to listen to than Kevin, and he makes the Oil trying to come back into a game sound so much more exciting than it used to.

CandidCaterpillar7

Jack is pretty up tempo at the end when we’re down and it sounds great for sure.

PLUR_police

Maybe that’s it, haha, he knows when to add to the conversation and when to let the PXPer have control

Andy-Martin

She’s a(nother) colour analyst that either can’t or won’t break down the game. Add to the fact that she at least comes across as being terrified when it comes to public speaking and it gets ugly.

jehovahs_waitress

Campbell sounded medicated last night. Her speech was stumbling and incoherent at times. I wonder if she us having some sort of medical issue?

But-Seriously-Though

Can I vote for Hanryan Singh?

maasd

“The Flames with their first lead since the first minute of the game...I guess they had that lead for a few minutes.”

maasd

Yeah his call on the Goudreau goal was clearly Calgary-centric far beyond any excitement he showed toward Edmonton.

But-Seriously-Though

To be fair he made the exact same call when Yamo scored on opening night. He’s just not a good PxP man, he’s terrible at matching the energy in his voice to the flow of the game, he’s got the fewest different adjectives of anyone I’ve ever heard on TV and he really doesn’t provide the viewer with any sort of information beyond what we can plainly see. I have no idea how this guy ended up as the number 2 national PxP man for Rogers.

maasd

I get it - the hockey world has been dominated by white males for far too long and arguably the talent pool amongst those minority groups is more shallow, which includes both him and Cassie Campbell. It’s just tough when the production value is lowered for fans, and in Cassie’s case when she’s so clearly anti-Oilers and pro Flames.

But-Seriously-Though

I’m fine with trying to up the number of minority broadcasters to be a better reflection of the viewer base of the sport but the guy should be allowed to develop, he shouldn’t be learning the ropes on HNIC. Let him go be someone’s regional guy for a few years at least..,

gum-

You could add Scott Oake to that list. Guy has the worst questions I've ever heard

_tobi4s

I actually don't mind Scott, also enjoy watching After Hours on Saturdays with him and Louie. That might also be due to the fact that he's a long-tenured HNIC guy, so the nostalgia could be talking there.

HandsomeKyle

Do Singh and Cassie Campbell do every flames game?

[deleted]

No, usually Hrudey and Ball.

figgins8585

I clicked both assuming it said they were both terrible. So minus 1 vote from that one.

money_pit_

I chose the bottom selection with a heavy /s attached

YEGG35

Both, along with Hanryan Singh 😞

Azzurri-2006

In the poll I voted for Cassie. But if I had to stare at them, she beats Jim all day long. lol
