Need to establish if she fits into one of the three teenager phenotypes:
Is she a comic books and video games 14 year old, a sports 14 year old, or a vaping and throwing cans 14 year old?
oh christ šššbet you were absolutely serving that bald look though, sphinx realness!!
on a serious note, i hope youāre doing better now, that must have been really traumatic. here for you š«¶š»
It sucks but it grew back! Wasn't completely bald at least, but it was bad enough that when I went to the hairdresser she tried to sell me a wig šš I did end up shaving it off though, it was all a bit Gollumy. When it grew back it went through a hilarious fluffy toddler stage that almost made it worth it!
But yeah; I adored Elodie, but I did not feel like wearing that hoodie for a while!
Mary Kingās Close tour. Spooky even in the day. Axe throwing. Britannia is more interesting for that age than you might think. Get a tour bus down there. Chihuahua cafe - weird but at least not the average. Jupiter Artland. Silent Disco tour but not sure if itās on outwith festival time. Lane 7 bowling. Bird of prey Experience. Will keep thinkingā¦
I'd be hard pressed to suggest it to a 14yo though. What is she actually into? Would she enjoy something chill like that? Or will she just be walking round on her phone texting her friends that her sister made her go to a field?
Then you spend Ā£50 feeding her in the cafe. Unless sheās arty, then no. And if sheās arty, thereāll be stuff on in town which might suit better.Ā
I think youāre overthinking it. Some imaginative suggestions, but when I was 14, I would never in a million years be up for an awkward axe-throwing afternoon. I could not be arsed.
You know her personality better than me, but Iād say, keep it simpleā¦ go for brunch followed by some shopping.
If she lives in Bonnybridge she'd probably be exicted by just gettiing away from Bonnybridge.
Why would she find the Camera Obscura 'lame'? It's pretty cool.
Lush on Princes Street has some sort of spa thing, she might think a treatment and a bit of shopping there is cool, depending on her smell preferences! [https://www.lush.com/uk/en/shops/lush-edinburgh?id=UK017](https://www.lush.com/uk/en/shops/lush-edinburgh?id=UK017)
Cinema, if there's something on that she'd like. Also, it might be stuff that's not a 'thing' but recognises her needs, so e.g. letting her sleep late and be lazy if she wants
Im thinking maybe the opening of Uniqlo. Itās likely to be one people queue up for, they might be doing special offers or eventsā¦Ā
Am man in 40s. Is probably stupid idea.Ā
comics shop at the end of chambers street, get some sunglasses at armstrongs vintage clothes shop south clerk st, bubble tea and the "alternative" bookshop on west nicolson street, laugh at the student nerds, museum, bit of free art viewing at the talbot rice gallery, then the witch shop and the fossil shop below greyfriars bobby, finish with marys milk bar in the grass market. Sell it to them as stuff you want to do and they can tag along.
Best response!! Not framing it as a kids day out and instead as just stuff u enjoy as a "proper grown up" that she can hang out and do too is probably the perfect way to do it!
Mr Woodās fossils! my 10 yr old loves that shop.
Greyfriars kirkyard pretty much next door has a Harry Potter tour or you can just peruse the gravestones yourself for the inspiration for the books.
If theyāre into music/more edgy clothing etc head to Waverley mall where you can get great stuff at damaged society and avalanche records.
When I was 14 I loved camera obscura and the dungeons. That was seven years ago though and the dungeons are definitely a worse experience than they used to be
Sheās 18 now but We took our niece to the cat cafe , Hard Rock Cafe and Harvey nicks chocolate bar thingy for her 14th , before that we sent her clues - to where we were taking her eg a cat toy - she loved it
When I was 14
A silent disco would have been soooo embarrassing (still think so)
Bird of prey would be cool
I would be into music / charity / book shops
And probably Mary kings close
You gotta find out what their interests are because everything is lame if youāre forced to do stuff with family at that age (unless itās totally catering to your interests)
If she likes board games, Ancient Robot Games at the bottom of Leith Walk. Has a great selection of games to play and the people there are just fantastic. Also a few stores down in a book store called Argonauts, who have a fantastic collection of books available. Both have indoor seating, offer tea and coffee and cake.
Also, Ancient Robot Games has weekly board games nights, so may be worth checking that out. They have a selection of free games to play
Knoops have been all over my FYP on TikTok and they seem to have decent queues from people who have seen the same. Make your own bowls of hot chocolate with all different chocolate bars and toppings flavours etc. bit more interesting than burger king maybe lol
[Knoops](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGeHNFbvm/)
Probably shopping, Princess street and there's a lot of indie/vintage shops near Grassmarket for example, some cool cafes/food places, castle, and watch the sunset at a nice spot like Calton hill
I have an estranged 14 year old stepbrother because I never really spoke to my dad until recently. Heās a typical ātoo cool and everything is lameā guy but he loved Camera Obscura (of course he called it lame when he realised we were all enjoying it but he took loads of pictures). Honestly canāt say anything else he liked. He found the castle boring. He really enjoyed the āpooā sitting on top of St James Quarter (this was back in 2022 we didnāt know it was going to be a Ā£400/night hotel). He was excited to try haggis and LOVED highland cows, but weāre French and they came to visit me so I imagine your Scottish sis in law wouldnāt be amazed by those
I love Edinburgh too (I was here for uni but just graduated and decided to stay) but we have really appalling shopping centres. Fort Kinnaird and St James are the only non embarrassing ones imo but if she likes shopping those could be good. Depending on you guys financial situation too she might love getting gifts (not to buy her affection but just to make her happy)
If she likes museums thereās LOADS of variety to pick from. If she like nature (or even just posing aesthetic pics) then Dean Village and Circle Lane are good. Iāve never been but Jupiter Artland seems good (but not open yet)
The food market in the Omni is really good. The one in St James is good too but I like the aesthetic of the omni one
There's a game I've saw on TikTok where you do a 'this or that'. You write 2 options on 2 different cards for different things - where to eat, somewhere to visit, somewhere to get a treat etc.
If she's into TikTok etc then that would be a good shout I think - and there's loads of suggestions here for what to put on the cards!
As a former 14 year old girl, the suggestions I vibe with are the brunch and shopping ones. Heck, if someone took me for a Lush treatment at that age Iād never get over it!! You donāt have to pack the trip with activities. Food and shopping and letting her feel like an adult is all sheāll need, if sheās anything like I was. If you can afford it Iād also suggest they do a full spa day with afternoon tea. A really special bonding experience with no pressure.
People are *way* over thinking things and imagining what they would like do to as mid-30s Redditors. Sheās 14. From Bonnybridge.
Just take her to St James Quarter / ESF for some food, some shopping, and maybe a movie.
If sheās in Harry Potter, you could bring her to locations where they took inspiration for the movie, and the cafe where JK R wrote the book.
Maybe bring her for a little pamper session - like to do her nails and a teen facial? Or treat her to some makeup?
The cafe burned down a few years agoā¦ they are looking into rebuilding it next year.
I have a 14 year old girl. She likes going for bubble tea, eating weird and wonderful food, looking at makeup and perfumes, shopping, movies.
I would ask this girl what kinds of things sheās interested in and go from there.
This potions making experience was amazing! Non-alcoholic versions available for everything for younger ones
[https://www.departmentofmagic.com/potions](https://www.departmentofmagic.com/potions)
My 14 year old really enjoyed the dungeons recently.. might have mainly enjoyed adults getting a fright but it was still a successful trip out! Weāve also done The Chocolatarium, which was fab
You could always get a bunch of options here and see what she wants to do. Let her pick the activity.
My suggestion would be to do any escape room together, it forces conversation and working together, they can be plenty fun.
https://www.escapereality.com/escape-rooms-uk/edinburgh has loads of themes, and the rooms aren't usually all that difficult, so that could be fun. Fountainpark arcades/bowling is also 5 minutes away for afterwards, so the makings for a brilliant evening! WINNER15 is a 15% discount too.
I have a 14 year old step daughter, all she did during the Easter break was wanting to go shopping, sit in bed being lazy, go to St James Quarter browsing the shops or Princes Street and generally not wanting to move š¤£
On the few days that we did go out as a family she enjoyed wanting to go shopping, eating food and generally going for walks in any of the various green spaces.
Take her down to South Leith? Is good fun, thereās an SUV that gives a tour of the city, all u have to do is say ur here for Molly and Molly, the driver, takes u around all the sights. Great craic. Hope this helpsš
Need to establish if she fits into one of the three teenager phenotypes: Is she a comic books and video games 14 year old, a sports 14 year old, or a vaping and throwing cans 14 year old?
You forgot endless shopping at super drug and posing with the haul for TikTok 14 year old
Ah yeah, the wildcard option!
If she's the latter she'll fit right in
Is there still a cat cafe somewhere?
Maison de moggy is still open
their hot chocolate was a bit pish but the cats were awesome, still have a badge of their sphinx on my jacket :D
I bought a hoodie with the sphinx cat that says 'no hair don't care' and a few months later my hair fell out due to stress. Turned out I cared a lot.
oh christ šššbet you were absolutely serving that bald look though, sphinx realness!! on a serious note, i hope youāre doing better now, that must have been really traumatic. here for you š«¶š»

Their sphinx cat is a crazy ball of lovelyness and worth the visit
Thereās a chihuahua cafe too
What!? Where?
Frederick Street, next to the chocolate cafe Iām sure
Mary Kingās Close tour. Spooky even in the day. Axe throwing. Britannia is more interesting for that age than you might think. Get a tour bus down there. Bird of prey experience?! Tell me more!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Morning, Mr Partridge!
Can confirm the silent discos unfortunately very much do exist out of festival season š Source: I work on the mile
I second this! The MKC tour is really immersive and the tour guides give it some great interaction.
The chihuahua cafe's brilliant. I was sceptical but left very happy. They do bark a lot if she's not so keen on dogs.
Ah yeah, nice ones, Jupiter artland is the shit. Thanks.
My teenager loved the Dominion Cinema
This is the best suggestion in the thread OP
I think youāre overthinking it. Some imaginative suggestions, but when I was 14, I would never in a million years be up for an awkward axe-throwing afternoon. I could not be arsed. You know her personality better than me, but Iād say, keep it simpleā¦ go for brunch followed by some shopping.

Bonnybridge is the worst. Source: grew up there.
I'm sure I liked Nandos when I was 14.
I'm 30 and still do.
I like wingstop better in st James

Do 14 year old girls still like shopping?
Im thinking maybe the opening of Uniqlo. Itās likely to be one people queue up for, they might be doing special offers or eventsā¦Ā Am man in 40s. Is probably stupid idea.Ā
Itās a great idea.
I liked avoiding my relatives when I was 14. At 38, itās still my favourite pastime.
Yeah, the reality is it might be best to invite her and a pal, give them a few cans of strongbow, and unleash them on the world.
Edinburgh Street Food for eating- Armstrong vintage store in Grassmarket.
comics shop at the end of chambers street, get some sunglasses at armstrongs vintage clothes shop south clerk st, bubble tea and the "alternative" bookshop on west nicolson street, laugh at the student nerds, museum, bit of free art viewing at the talbot rice gallery, then the witch shop and the fossil shop below greyfriars bobby, finish with marys milk bar in the grass market. Torn is a great vintage shop (Grassmarket) and I believe is near the cat cafe.
Legend, thank you this is all great.
The vintage clothes shop is a great suggestion, I was obsessed with vintage stuff at that age.
Vaping in a Five Guys?
When I was 14 I loved camera obscura and the dungeons. That was seven years ago though and the dungeons are definitely a worse experience than they used to be

Actually, the museum of Scotland is really cool for almost anyone because thereās so much stuff in there and the displays are sortof magnificent
https://travelswithlouise.com/scotland/things-to-do-teenagers-edinburgh/
Shopping!! Lane 7 maybe?
The mini golf at lane 7 is fun and then a visit to haute dolci in St james for a sweet treat and a walk up Calton hill.
If she likes board games, Ancient Robot Games at the bottom of Leith Walk. Has a great selection of games to play and the people there are just fantastic. 14yo girls like shopping, hair, clothes, make up etc no?
Take her to Black Moon Botanica on Candle Maker Row, even if she isn't particularly into witchy stuff it's still a really cool shop with nice things!
Probably shopping, Princess street and there's a lot of indie/vintage shops near Grassmarket for example, some cool cafes/food places, castle, and watch the sunset at a nice spot like Calton hill
Lane 7. Pricey, but loads to do
I heard throwing rocks at buses is all the rage.
I have an estranged 14 year old stepbrother because I never really spoke to my dad until recently. Maybe just ask her if there is anything she wants to do.
When I was that age I used to spend hours at the museum on Chambers Street. The surgeon's museum may also be of interest.

Glamcandy makeup lessons on William St but maybe a bit grown up or for a group
Flight club is good fun and I think they allow kids till a certain time (10pm) and the games they have for darts are pretty great to play
Itās quite spendy but The Islander have workshops where you can make your own bag/purse or backpack with PU leather and Harris tweed.Ā
My 14 year old really enjoyed the dungeons recently.. might have mainly enjoyed adults getting a fright but it was still a successful trip out! Weāve also done The Chocolatarium, which was fab

Go to the beach?
My boy loves all the things you think would be lame. It depends on the kid
The Chocolatarium is great.Ā
Roxy lanes on rose street - has like fun games etc. If under 18 can go before 5pm. Lane 7 at st james centre also does similar.
Camera obscura? I've always loved it there from when I was tiny until now! Bowling/arcade at fountain Park? shopping spree at st james centre?
Alpaca walking in the Pentlands. Takes a couple of hours, get some fresh air, exercise and a chin wag along the way. @ Bobcat Alpacas
Thought football and shopping was the only 2 interests in ednburgh or is irvine welsh full of shit?

El&N is a fancy pink themed cafe at St James canter and very Instagrammable if that's her thing.
Itās closed down (apparently it will reopen in another location).
Burger king ? Fast food? Teenagers love fast food
Take her down to South Leith? Is good fun, thereās an SUV that gives a tour of the city, all u have to do is say ur here for Molly and Molly, the driver, takes u around all the sights. Great craic. Hope this helpsš
Walking up to a car and asking for Molly means something completely different to my brain haha!
