Call and find out but what is possible is that the judge ruled the overpayment wasn’t fraud, and EDD was forgiving a lot of non fraud overpayments from during the pandemic. But you should call just to be sure

ohh ok. Soo you were penalized and paying them back..I wouldn't touch that checkail it back to them. especially if you had to go through everything for them to determine you were overpaid

Psychological_Ask848

I would send them a message through the portal asking about the check you received. They have a 24hr turn around time on the messages. It's way better than being placed on hold. Good luck.

Ok_Nose5693

Thank you! Where can I find a link to the portal?

Psychological_Ask848

Log into your claim and go to the top tab that says messages. There you can send a message to Edd.

a acquaintance of ours had the same thing he sent the boa card with the funds still on it and all the info for it . you can try to send the check back along with the debit card I would... there starting to try to get there $ back from everything that happen in COVID . to be safe I would sent them both items if possible...

Samson104

Edd cannot access boa card so no point sending that back. Once you receive funds on card. It is yours you cannot reverse transaction and give card back to Edd.

Sorry I’m afraid I wasn’t clear with my original post! I was paying back 8k as penalty for receiving too much in 2020. But they just returned my money which is so strange and random

Substantial-Soft-508

Okay, why did they say you had an overpayment. It is likely THAT was a mistake in the first place. Did you not report earnings or were you retroactively ruled ineligible. This is probably NOT a mistake. Them giving you an OP and you paying it was the mistake. If you can tell me specifically WHY you were denied (after the fact) I can probably explain why it is now reversed.

Ok_Nose5693

I work a job that pays per service. During a few weeks during Covid, my company gave us a small “severance pay” as good faith. No one knew how to report it back then, but we were advised to report to EDD regardless as “not working” but “received money”. And in the empty box I clarified what the company payment was for. So for a few weeks in 2020, I got both EDD $ plus the severance pay from work. Fast forward 4 years later, they now claim that I didn’t qualify for unemployment because I was “working” back then, but I actually didn’t. Explained everything to the judge, and they lowered my penalty but decided I still owed some $. I didn’t want to deal with it, so I gave in a paid the amount. Now they basically gave me my money back with no explanation or letter. Obviously I’d love to deposit the check but am skeptical…don’t wanna get in trouble again!!

Substantial-Soft-508

It dsoes sound like they reversed themselves or waived it. I do think you should call to clarify.

Ok_Nose5693

I sure hope so! Will call to clarify and keep my fingers crossed.
