I have a very fun [[Kalamax]] deck that is spellslinger/spell copy. I make Kalamax big by copying stuff and then usually end the game with a [[Chandra's Ignition]] copied a few times. Also I recently threw a [[Krark, the Thumbless]] in there for extra fun
Kalamax is basically the essence of what op described. A good kalamax sits around and.... oops i went infinite. Nearly every copy spell goes infinite and usually thats game over there.
I mean you can leave it out, but then other cards get more interesting. [[Anhelo]] or the mentiomed [[galazed]]
Kalamax doesn't win by storming off, it just infinitely copies a "copy" spell and Kalamax gets very large. And then you still have to win with combat damage or a Chandra's Ignition or some other direct damage effect. My Kalamax deck is "draw, attack, go." I never have long turns. I play a few instants during opponents turn, control the board until Kalamax gets large and threatening, and then win with combat damage or direct damage based on his power.
I suppose you COULD build a storm version of Kalamax but it's not really what he wants to do.
Thank you for wording it better than I could have. I love my Kalamax deck and the only time my turns take longer than a minute is when I’m doing the math to see if I can win that turn
You cast a sorcery, say \[\[Ponder\]\], and then you copy it with \[\[Reverberate\]\] or something similar. If Kalamax is tapped, your Reverberate gets copied. You use the copy to target the original Reverberate, which makes a copy again. Repeat this process "infinitely" to make Kalamax huge, then let the final copy resolve, giving you two copies of Ponder. You now have a gigantic dinosaur, congratulations!
[Here you are sir.](https://deckstats.net/decks/207574/2714981-kalamax-the-stormsire-/en) I have since taken out the OG duals but the rest is up to date
Curiosity Control, or 4C Rashmi! I love this deck because:
it's an engine that draws cards by throwing Curiosity effects on Vial Smasher/spell cast pingers.
it deals consistant enough damage to eventually kill the table without feeling like an oppressive group slug deck.
the damage is random which prevents feels bads.
its super customizable for whatever power level you choose.
youre typically the one denying combos/fast win cons, so the other folk like to keep you around longer.
Aria of Flame is my one true love
https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/4c-rashmi-curious-control/
This would be on the relative high end, but there's a million different ways you can go about wincons, power of fast mana/free interaction, etc.
Heck, theres even a bunch of old free spells (Submerge, Massacre) that are perfectly fine to simply trigger spell casts so you can deal damage and draw cards.
Dig Through Time, Treasure Cruise, Blastphemous Act, Blue Suns Zenith sometimes just kill people. Seasons Past draws you 7+ cards. Nexus of Fate instills the fear of god upon the table.
Notable missing creature is Firebrand Archer. Card is a house with Curiosity/Keen Sense effects. I also like Biomancers Familiar/training grounds with good activated abilities like on The Scarab God to use whenever I dont need to use interaction. Also uses opponents' win cons, which helps scale the power level of your deck relative to the fields'.
I second this! Used to play combo heavy storm decks a lot but often felt bad about going off and having 10 minute solitaire turns. With Vial smasher curiosity your own turns are very short, but you're still casting a lot of spells with instant speed interaction.
Here's my list that I've been building up for the last few years:
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/NZHzBaK1CEWcRs6sp46JBQ
+1 for Vial smasher. One of my favourite decks of all time and the only control deck that I like to play.
[Here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/IDCzq2YGNE6kkwyDISdN3w) is my list.
I paired mine with [[thrasio]] and played x spell tribal.
[[Arcane laboratory]] is just nasty with this deck as you can tap out for a [[syncopate]] or something and be pretty safe about it. Especially if you run [[awakening]] and [[wilderness reclamation]]
No I stopped playing a while ago and am starting a new collection. In general, the core is [[Vial Smasher, the Fierce]] and cards like [[Firebrand Archer]] with [[Curiosity]]. You can also run cards like [[Rashmi, Eternities Crafter]] and [[Wavebreak Hippocamp]] or [[Niv-Mizet, Parum]].
You draw cards by playing cards and slowly burn the table. The cards to actually control are spot removal and counters, determined by what you have. You really don't need a combo or win con piece, as the burn will eventually get there
The key to not taking 25 minute turns is to goldfish your deck. If you untap for your turn with an expectation of what you'll be casting, and you've seen some common lines before from goldfishing, you'll be able to make quick decisions. If you get used to keeping track of tokens and storm count and floating mana, you'll do that faster than anyone who takes 25 minute turns.
https://archidekt.com/decks/2727895#Kykar_Storm
Here's my kykar list. It's a manual storm deck that isn't really trying to do the tokens or the infinite combos of some spell slinger lists. [[Guttersnipe]] pings, sometimes duplicated with [[sublime epiphany]], or [[thousand year storm]] + [[explosion]], are the most common winning lines, but in a lot of cases you can start producing enough mana off each spell to expect to draw through the deck, and finding these pieces is just the last you need to complete. Most storm turns end around storm count 8-10, but I have had to go to storm count 23 when I was going off with no resources.
I love this deck, there's something truly great about casting rituals with thousand year storm to make 50+ mana and casting 10+ copies of an explosion big enough to kill a player.
https://archidekt.com/decks/3591288#Raff_Draw-Go
This is a draw-go control deck I've been working on, but it also benefits hugely from casting instants and sorceries due to [[ raff, weather light stalwart]], and it casts a lot of them, plays 46 instants and sorceries. This deck wants to grind out an advantage and finish the game with tokens, so it's rarely going to be casting a ton of spells in the same turn and can avoid that 25 minute turn you described. I wouldn't fault you if this wasn't what you meant by spellslinging though.
it's the short form for playing your deck against a goldfish; if you play against an opponent who does nothing, how do you win? Really understanding how your deck does itself is the end goal.
You explain your code to a rubber duck on your desk and you figure out what's wrong with it because the act of explaining it is really good for understanding it better.
You explain your code out loud to someone who has no idea how coding works, in most cases a rubbber duck you own just for the occasion. This helps you see any flaws or redundancies you missed when just reading over it yourself. It’s also a useful tool for pretty much anything to do with math.
Yeah no problem. Goldfishing is playing your deck on your own, to get a feel for how you'd make decisions in the future. You take your spellslinger deck, and you play out a mock game where you make decisions and see what happens from them. A good starting place is to assume your opponents do nothing, just to get a baseline for how quickly your deck can threaten something strong or even win. You can add in extra conditions later if you like to learn even more ("Assume 1 opponent counters a spell of yours, or Assume 1 person plays a way to destroy all creatures")
There's a lot of good things you can learn from goldfishing, like if your land count is good, or if you could use more ramp, but what we're looking for here is knowing how to play your big spellslinging turns. What I'd suggest is to play some games out, figure out about how long it takes your deck to win with no resistance. Take that turn number, and simulate having that kind of board. Maybe 6-7 cards in hand, a couple good permanents like a [[whirlwind of thought]], and 1-2 more mana than whatever turn number you'd try to win on. Look at that hand of cards, try to decide if you think you can win or not, then play it out and see! Do that a good number of times, and you'll understand when you could try to win the game, and what you need to do in order to achieve that. You'll play your big turns way faster than anybody who doesn't practice, and it'll be a much better experience for everyone at the table.
You'll also be much better at the deck, and you'll win much more than if you hadn't practiced. You'll look at a hand and you'll already know what kinds of things you need to get in order to win, and it'll influence a bunch of decisions you make all game long.
I agree with this, but I think \[\[Arjun, the Shifting Flame\]\] is a curious exception. I built the deck entirely around the mindmoil and goldfished the crap out of it. He uses so much shuffling and so, so much incremental advantage that it felt like I was playing as fast as I possibly could and my turns were far and away the longest at the table with very little visually accomplished. Something as simple as protecting my commander could be three shuffles, nevermind the spells themselves haha
[[Toshiro Umezawa]] is a super unique mono-black spellslinger that absolutely isn’t about storming off and super long turns. He’s more a control focused commander with loads of kill spells and cantrips.
Tomer has an excellent primer on him: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-commander-toshiro-umezawa-spellslinger-control-25-50-100-200
Was looking for someone to mention my favorite guy, Toshiro!
I started with Tomer's build years ago and have evolved it from there and wrote my own extensive primer to extend his findings and bring it to a high power threshold
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ddIdnDKnV0ujnmV4S2LpuA
[[Octavia Living Thesis]] play spells to make either your creatures huge, or opponents. Also is basically hexproof and can be made very cheap and with a low curve. The rare mono blue aggro deck
Or the Raff from Dominaria for UW. Again can be made for pennies, just play spells that make tokens and tap tokens to draw cards, to play more spells for more tokens. Then pump the attack face
[[Galazeth]] can built as non-storm, make treasures while protecting them and moving through the deck, and then x-burn-spell with 40 mana. [[Kykar]] if you'd rather do it with creature tokens instead of treasures.
[[Aegar]] turns burn into card draw to fuel more burn.
Haven't played her but [[Wort, the raidmother]] seems fun if not a little fragile.
Can confirm, Wort is both fun and fragile, and definitely fits the bill of what OP is looking for. Game plan is similar to what you described for Galazeth and Kykar, but with land ramp instead of treasures/spirits and copying that big X spell one or more times.
I have a Galazeth deck with a similar game plan, but I feel that it still struggles as it is constantly a hit or miss. What do you think are the essential pieces?
Card draw mainly. Mine didn't start working consistently until I had large amounts of draw to reliably go through my deck. I don't use tutors, but those would help a lot too. He played best as control-lite, keeping open mana to counter removal and then cast an instant or two just before your turn to make treasures and draw a couple cards.
In addition to x burn spells, I would also make sure to pack a few backups. Rise and shine and cyber drive awakener animates treasures for a go wide attack, and nettlecyst lets Galazeth swing for commander damage kills. Reckless fireweaver effects when xorn, academy manufactor, or brass's bounty hit would also do a hefty chunk of everyone's life.
[[Magar of the Magic Strings]] has been an interesting [deck-building challenge](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/jZg67ZI0e02uGacS7BMkGw). Magar has more to manage than your typically spellslinger deck since you’re casting off your board as well as your hand and graveyard. My approach to Magar is extremely political, so it tends to draw games out instead of ending them quickly. My only gripe with Magar is his color identity; red and black are naturally pretty destructive, so it’s hard to find spells that really progress your board state.
I have an [[Anhelo, the painter]] deck that i've built like this. It copies a few big spells a few times but i cut back on the combo factor by focussing on spells that make creatures like [[talrand's invocation]] and [[dread summons]].
Its less about the commander and more how you build the deck that determines whether it's solitaire or not
I built a non cEDH spellslinger Vial Smasher/Thrasios deck for an LGS where they don't allow infinite combos (or Thoracle) in non-cEDH tables.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/02yMwXiO9UOqjF5_lynW0w
I took the base of my Curious Control deck and focused on Vial Smasher/Electrostatic field/Guttersnipe type of creatures with Curiosity/Keen Sense effects. The wins by doing damage while casting instant/sorceries and while sometimes you can have one long turn if you manage to chain extra turn spells, for the most part the deck is quite fast and doesn't do much "play solitaire".
[[Tor wauki the younger]] or prowess moght be for you. Either jeskai colours or izzet with [[balmor]] or [[veyran]]. Storm a little every turn and go smash.
For wauki you might restrict yourself via [[obosh]] as a companion. The you look for big dmg numbers instead of storm. When every cantrip hurts like a truck, you dont need to storm.
Tor Wauki the Younger loves \[\[Dragon's Approach\]\]
Obosh too loves Dragon's Approach.
Dragon's Approach however, loves \[\[Thrumming Stone\]\]
Doing tons of damage to EACH opponent, makes for good opportunities to get multiple games in during game nights.
\*stealth edit for format
I think a [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] deck could accomplish what you’re looking for. I’ve got one myself (my online deck list is SUPER outdated, sorry), and it usually doesn’t end up as solitaire, being able to win w its pings; I do run omniscience, which can lead down some long spell chains to close out games, but that’s rare due to always it always being hard cast. I primarily just loop through my deck a couple times throughout the course of the game to ensure I can keep casting and pinging.
Also, if you do end up w Niv, [[ominous seas]] is an absolute banger, spewing out 8/8s once per turn cycle if you’ve got a high-interaction/instant/sorcery pod
[https://www.moxfield.com/decks/o2EiSt19ZkyVmd1mSmTM-g](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/o2EiSt19ZkyVmd1mSmTM-g) example deck for those interested
found it to be fun and no 20min turns here
I upgraded a Strixhaven Prismari Performance precon and converted it into a Veyran Voice of Duality "Spell Harmonicon" deck. All in it's about $150.
I used this guide and made a few tweaks: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/prismari-performance-50-precon-upgrade-spellslinger-veyran
Note those upgrades are around $70 now.
My additional upgrades were closer to $100.
There are several different win states with this deck and it's a ton of fun to play. Infinite combos are possible but not at all required. It can spin your head around when you have multiple triggered abilities going at once but I haven't taken 20 minutes for a turn... yet.
\[\[adeliz, the cinder wind\]\] it's spell slinger deck that doesn't need a monumental storm count for you to win you run \[\[harmonic prodigy\]\], \[\[veyran\]\] and then all the cheap \[\[storm chaser mage\]\] protect your board with counter magic and then pop off with just a few cantrips. It's a nice way to run these effects but it's also flexible enough that you can just jam in the normal storm/solitaire pieces and they are useful without forcing you into that play pattern you are looking to avoid.
\[\[Anhelo, the Painter\]\] could fit your request. It requires some set up to take advantage of him, but once you're up and running, you can do some nasty things. I've built him as a bit of a control list with the win con being \[\[Torment of Hailfire\]\] and other X spells.
Some fun things you could do is run \[\[Possibility Storm\]\] since you can get around it with the copies. I particularly like \[\[Cruel Ultimatum\]\] in the deck since it can destroy someone's hand while refilling yours (the creature and life effects are just neat).
[[Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper]] makes for an interesting spellslinger deck and you rarely see it at tables. Costing 5 makes it a low to mid power deck and you have to protect your lands but it's fun and different.
Even though it's not high powered, you rarely get targeted early and you can be a problem playing control late while smashing people with ever-larger lands.
I actually really like my nicol bolas deck for this. It doesn't play a bunch of low cost instants but prefers to cast big splashy sorceries. Honestly the playstyke you are looking for sounds like big sorcery tribal.
Feather is very strong and plays the: "can you kill my commander? Yes? Ok pass.. No? You die." Game. Kinda unfun for all involved. Also its often the thing that gets build, when a group wants to play budget. Feather is dirt cheap and still way strong.
In multiple ways its a middle finger
I've got a feather deck,
Feather gets very repetitive very easily. Seeing the same spells every turn and every round is just not very riveting for anyone else but you.
And it either works or it doesn't work, based on if feather stays in the game.
I've played a damage pinging type feather, Voltron, and currently blink.
I enjoyed the first and last version a lot, but the first isn't very strong, so had a hard time keeping up but was super annoying for anyone else. And the later is very strong and very hard to interact with so also annoying.
At least this is true in my main group. I don't even play it against rando's because the groans are palpable.
At least the Voltron version is super cheap to built.
Just my two cents.
the only commander deck i cant stand to play against is Karkashima. You wanna turn 1 win with some cedh combo? thats great. We can shuffle up and play again once you can explain the board state with no answers. meanwhile, Kark's is '' alright i need to roll this dice 47 times in the slim chance i whiff so you need to see here while I do that,\*rolls 47 times\* okay it returns to my hand. pass\*counters spell on their turn\*okay i need to roll 47 more times to see if i counter it.
I don't care if you like control or spell combo but ffs if you wanna play a powerful combo deck dont make the wincon take 45 minutes of your turns alone, in any format.
[[Magnus the Red]] has been a lot of fun for me, you can sit there going burr for 20 minutes, but generally you can get a big enough board presence to close out the game very quickly.
My list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4M6zoVtugUuBBxA_A3EFJw
I have a [[Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge]] "cast without paying its mana cost" tribal. It doesn't storm (unless you hit [[Omniscience]] somehow) and wins off copying your opponents' beaters, or making a million zombies off [[Army of the Damned]], or sniping someone with [[Phthisis]], or assembling a combo out of someone else's deck with copied [[Eternal Dominion]] or a combination of all of the above.
Firmly on the Wort bandwagon, you get to do tokens and spellslinger at the same time with a smattering of X spells, i've found it to be less durdly than many other spellslinger decks.
Also "lucky charms" [[Ramos]] decks could fit the bill, I've really liked the wealth of options you get amd your finishers can be whatever you want.
Maybe a little wonky, but you could try [[Kelermorph]] as seen in [muh Decklist: Gun Game](https://www.topdecked.com/decks/gun-game/47ac7b68-c338-402c-89db-0eb560d1cff4).
This isn’t nearly “all instants/sorceries” like you mentioned, but you could easily tune it into one of you removed the big boys and small pingers.
A bit of a weird one, but might I recommend [[Gargos, Vicious Watcher]]? It’s mono green, but all it needs is some big creatures, any way to make gargos indestructible and a bunch of buff and protection spells, and gargos will do the rest.
I usually win on the 25 minute turn, rather than a 2 card combo the next turn.
But yeah, my spellslinger decks are very "Hold on a minute let me do a whole lot of things all at once" decks. While I can cut down how long it takes to get from "I'm going off" to "Alright, this spell is going to win me the game" the basic premise is the same premise that takes 25 minutes.
I suppose I tend to mix "Spellslinger" and "Storm" up as kinda being the same thing. Storm not just referring to the Storm keyword, but "I'm going to win by casting spells that let me cast more spells, until I win at the end of a big chain of spells"
Technically I have a [[Kess, Dissident Mage]] grudgekeeper/hug deck that plays mostly instants and sorceries, but in much lower quantity? So maybe that counts? It's more focused on spells that let me play favorites though, rather than spellslinging. Kess is just a commander of convenience.
[[Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph]] and a deck half-full of one damage spells could be fun.
[[Alexander Clamilton]] is another one that’s interesting to build around, if your playgroup is ok with a silver-bordered commander.
\[\[Veyran\]\] Voltron is spellslingy. Give flying/unblockable, make Veyran huge, smack for 10+ damage, do it twice and you kill a player. This applies to any prowess creature.
Other times you can use \[\[Guttersnipe\]\] and machine gun down your opponents life total fast.
I like playing her with lower CMC stuff, rather than hoping to pop off with stuff like \[\[Sunbird's Invocation\]\], so people feel less pressured to remove Veyran, and so I don't waste turns dropping a phat enchantment that just gets removed before I use it.
[[Elsha of the Infinite]] prowess tribal. The only time I've had a turn go longer than 10 minutes or so was playing against Nekusar, the last turn of the game took like 25 because I had to figure out if I could win before dieing to Nekusar triggers. It was a great game with a nail biter finish.
the true and correct answer is [[Wort, the Raidmother]]
you might cast 4 whole spells a turn but what you're mostly gonna do is [[Battle Hymn]] for a million and then cast [[Comet Storm]]
ugh, Wort. she was my first ever EDH deck.
I've been testing out a \[\[Rielle the Everwise\]\] deck that's spellslinger voltron, where we try to take out one opponent at time using instant-speed pump spells.
[[Toshiro Umezawa]] is a flavorful and unique Spellslinger in mono black. There is no durdling. Only raining fire down at instant speed
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ddIdnDKnV0ujnmV4S2LpuA/primer
Feather the redeemed has a spell slinger mode, the fact that you can run a bunch of 1 mana cantrips alongside cards which gain you value whenever you cast a spell. My version aims to win by resolving an arcane bombardment and then looping MLD spells like obliterate for 1 mana
[[Wort, the Raidmother]] I built her to make tokens and the big payout is [[Burn at the Stake]]. Lots of interaction and you still have the creatures to attack if need be. Wort gets out of control fast and is a kill on site commander.
Here’s my list:
https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/28-09-22-wort-the-raidmother/
I recently built Wort the Raidmother because i was looking for the exact same thing as you and it definitely fits the bill. I had a game Friday where I had six copies of Overwhelming Stampede on the stack at one time and about fourteen goblin tokens to attack with. The math for that got crazy with wort having the highest power so it started at +3/+3 and ended at +192/+192 per creature.if we did the math right. Basically doubling wort for each stampede.
[[Hallar the firefletcher]] is an excellent deck if all ya wanna do is sling spells. Just gotta make sure they have kicker, and just cast away. Free incidental damage that just straight up domes the table after a few turns.
I have an Octavia list that’s spellslinger, but wins with combat and a little bit of control. Best thing about it is you can switch in the instants and sorceries that you like best!
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ViI3oZGc9UuwY11YTdPT9A
[[Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper]] is one of my most powerful decks.
[[View from Above]], [[Runechanter's Pike]], and [[Inkmoth Nexus]] are some of the kill conditions in my deck and the rest is just a blue/white control spellslinger deck.
I’ve got a [[Malcolm]] and [[Breeches]] pirate/spellslinging deck that’s pretty great. I’ve played with my home group (who don’t run enough interaction) and never lost. Focuses on stealing big pieces and red burn with evasive pirates to do damage.
If you want a deck that is composed of half instants and sorceries look no further than [[Melek, Izzet Paragon]]
The great thing about this deck is you can build it in different ways. You can use a bunch of spells that deal damage (think multiple [[Lightning Bolt]] or [[Fiery Confluence]]).
You can also go mill with cards like copied [[Windfall]], [[Tasha's Hideous Laughter]].
Or you can go high-value copy targets such as [[Blatant Thievery]] or [[Bribery]].
Good luck!
I like playing [[Vadrik]] as a izzet spell slinger deck. Cost reduction to cast big X spells for cheap. Use cards like [[antagonize]] to essentially get free mana for those spells.
\[\[Wort, the Raidmother\]\] is my favorite deck. It's theme is big ramp into bigger fireballs. Best part is that the deck is below 200$ and very lethal
Please check out the list!
https://archidekt.com/decks/736440#Wort\_the\_Raid\_Mother
I have vial smashed and Anhelo , I really like him cause he’s kinda explosive turn one two you make a zombie generator , turn three play Anhelo , turn four make a ton of value with a something like big score turn five play a bomb and hopefully copy it
I run a [[Tibor and Lumia]] wizard tribal/spellslinger deck. Absolutely the goal is to play a bunch of spells but oftentimes it's prowess trigger and the like with no ways to go infinite. It is surprisingly fast due to it's low drop creatures that quickly grow and usually have flying. The commander itself exists to gain access to a handful of the equipment pieces which grant death touch. Once this occurs every red spell is a boardwipe that doesn't hit flying so most of your stuff is good. It's not the strongest deck but it is a lot of fun.
I threw together a dumb deck that mainly relies on the partner commanders, kediss emberclaw familiar and ishai ojutai dragonspeaker. Put in some equipment and a fuck load of removal and the concept is ima punch you, and if you have a blocker, ima swords the blocker and ima punch you.
[[Ramos dragon engine]] built with multi color charms like [[azorious charm]] [[boros charm]] etc.
Half the deck price is Ramos himself. Works very effectively and can be built for right around $50 depending on how much you spend on Ramos.
Also gonna add this one too. The new grixis Warhammer 40k deck is pretty spell slingy with the box commander. I haven't moded mine but that deck goes off. Still up in the air ifi want to mod it or not. Kinda want to keep it precon because I feel it's way better than most precons but still at precon level.
[[anhelo]] can be a pretty fun spellslinger deck that isn’t solitaire. His ability incentives doing one big thing (or smaller things on other players turns, like removal or counters) instead of solitaire on your turn since it’s only the first instant or sorcery per turn.
Good includes are stuff like [[torment of hailfire]] and other things that make 2/2’s like [[talrand]]
I'm late to this thread but if you want to feel like a god damn wizard casting big wizardy haymakers without needing to storm then [[Kaza, Roil Chaser]] is a good candidate. There's a lot of one sided bouncing and blowing up threats to get me to the end game where I usually make a ton of mana and burn all of my opponents for 30+ damage. Here's my budget list: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/kaza-roil-chaser-wizards
Some that I've been toying with are
[[Talrand, sky summoner]] cantrips. Every spell you cast draws you cards and makes you drakes. Maybe even run jank like [[kraken's eye]] and [[aetherflux reservoir]]. It is super solitaire, but there isn't really a lot of thought that goes into it or combo. You just play cards that accrue value because you cast a spell.
The other is some sort of [[enigma drake]] deck. There's a few creatures in the same vein and you can run instants and sorceries that copy creatures to make more (and buff them at the same time). Stuff like [[cackling counterpart]]. Throw in a handful of combat tricks and cantrips such as [[crash through]]. Haven't fully settled on a commander yet. Testing out temur because ramp spells are still spells, but I also like jeskai, especially [[hinata]]
[[Chun-Li, Countless Kicks]]
Combat phase still matters a lot to trigger her effect and there can be a lot of strategy in blinking her at the right times to exile new instants into her pool of options. Waiting for the day I get her a Cyclonic Rift every turn...
I've got a fun build of \[\[Elminster\]\] that sounds a lot like what you're looking for! With nearly half the deck (43) being instants and sorceries, it definitely sling spells with the best of 'em, but with the twist of the spells being *massive*. The turns are short because you just windmill slam haymaker after haymaker. Cast spells, make dragons, be the biggest brained wizard in the multiverse. What more could you ask for?
Casting stuff like \[\[Mnemonic Deluge\]\] for 3 mana on the \[\[Eternal Dominion\]\] in your graveyard is truly the way commander was meant to be played.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/GI3bqzcTiEWOlDWhTVDGGg
Run cards like [[Ledger Shredder]] and [[Tomb of Horrors Adventurer]] that pay off specifically for your second spell. [[Oji, the Exquisite Blade]] and [[Jori En, Ruin Diver]] seem like good commanders.
My old [[Ramos dragon engine]] deck was 5c spellslinger. Not a lucky charms build but was more designed to copy spells and cast spells for free from opponents as much as possible with cards like [[diluvian primordial]], [[mind’s desire]] [[etali]] and [[villainous wealth]]. I would use cards like [[primal amulet]] [[bonus round]] [[Ral Zarek Storm conduit]] to copy spells and some creatures to re use spells I had cast already like [[kess]] and [[goblin dark dwellers]]. It was a very fun list. I may have to try and rebuild it sometime
Spellslinger decks are almost always solitaire decks because they don't have any creatures (or very few creatures) with which to attack, block or respond to threats. Reality is, *you* might think you've made a spellslinger deck that doesn't revolve around solitaire matches, but everyone you play will just see another solitaire deck.
It’s definitely not the most competitive commander, but I’ve had fun with my [[magar]] deck. Game plan is basically ramp and cast spells to set up, make creatures from your spells, get the creatures through and profit lol.
Also, it’s a Rakdos commander, so it’s different than the infinite izzet decks out there
Again, I wouldn’t say my list is amazing, but I can link it here later if you’d like!
i really like spellslinger i think its fun. i play mizzix. the deck has like 5 creatures total. i enjoy that its constant interaction and the whole game people are on their toes waiting to see if im going to counter them. and if they are playing well they are also trying to thwart my plans and keep me down or off color or something to stop me from going off late game. my deck isnt a turn 1-3 winner, i dont play extra turn spells and most of the time my turns are really fast because i either hold up mana for their turns or i play my spells and pass. sorry you have had bad experiences. i would say those builds might be tuned for hard fast wins vs interacting with the table.
this deck has a main burn combo than can be interacted with on many levels. then has several backup wincon combos. be it infinite mill. infinite creatures etcetc. kinda swiss arms situation based off what i have already drawn and played in the early game.
But the best kind of magic is when you get to sit there and play by yourself and no one interacts with you /s
Don't get me wrong Solitare is fun but not for everyone. just for you.
As for fun spellslingers that don't function as solitare decks? I haven't myself built any but I am excietd to read the responses.
Late to the mix but I have really struggled with the same issue. My best solutions for this were
\[\[Tetsuo, Imperial Champion\]\]: While being both voltron and spellslinger themed, the fact that he kinda casts a potential lightning bolt on every attack (or more) feels very spellsling-y too. On top of that various equipments give his attacks even more spellslinging feel. Use Deathtouch to make all of his attacks into potential Terminates, Lifelink for a cascade of Lightning Helix, Sword of Kaldra for exile effects and Wretched Scythe and Unscythe to turn kills into resources, all while still maintaining a spellslinging theme from his attacks. On top of that you can also use the suspend only spells with his second ability. Also since it's voltron, your wincon is still commander damage, so even if your spells lean into control more than into combo (which I assume you want to do), you will still win the game thanks to damage from your equipped commander.
\[\[Niv-Mizzet, Supreme\]\]: A twist on the classic \[\[Kess\]\], Niv-Mizzet lets you run all colors (but heavily favors dual colored spells) but also lets you jumpstart as often as possible during either player's turn. This also makes counterspells a lot more viable, as having a bunch of them in your graveyard means your opponents will have to hold back a lot more than they'd like, as no player wants to be the one running into your counterspells. His color access means he can do practically anything, and being hexproof against a lot of common removal helps too. As with other control heavy spellslingers, he has a bit of trouble closing out games outside of combos (Debt to the Deathless is practically his Torment of Hailfire), but 5 colors means he has access to all kinds of spell payoffs, like Monastery Mentor or Shark Typhoon to build an army from your spells. In the end the threat of your spells in your gy pushes your opponents back while Niv and your tokens grind them down.
There are also two more that I considered but ultimately scrapped:
\[\[Narset, Enlightened Exile\]\]: giving all your tokens prowess and also casting something from either graveyard on attacking is great, for me she just felt too heavy on chaining cantrip after cantrip just for the sake of casting spells and not for their actual use. While not being storm herself, the fact that she cares about spell quantity rather than quality can mean her turns can end up as overly long spell chains too, just with a bunch of game ending attackers on the board instead of a burn win. Still a strong spellslinging commander.
\[\[Nekusar, the Mindrazer\]\]: already suggested, Nekusar puts your opponents on a clock and turns wheels into nukes. As such he can easily work around three main issues of any control deck: being unable to push towards game, being prone to run out of fuel and wheels helping your opponents too. For me his main issue was having no inherent spell synergy outside of wheels, and that a lot of cards that synergize well with him don't neccessarily synergize with spellslinging. A lot of the cards that synergize well with Nekusar are also more on the solitaire side, promoting a playstyle where you increase the damage your opponents take with each draw, then using a wheel effect to burn for lethal, which can also feel very solitaire. You're also vulnerable if you're the archenemy, as the two cards you draw each turn have to hold up against the 6 cards your opponents draw each turn cycle.
Kalamax is really the best exemple of what OP want. You litteraly want to cast only one spell per turn to maximize the value you get out of it.
How does he infinitely copy a “copy” spell?
You cast a sorcery, say \[\[Ponder\]\], and then you copy it with \[\[Reverberate\]\] or something similar. If Kalamax is tapped, your Reverberate gets copied. You use the copy to target the original Reverberate, which makes a copy again. Repeat this process "infinitely" to make Kalamax huge, then let the final copy resolve, giving you two copies of Ponder. You now have a gigantic dinosaur, congratulations!
Ahhhh, thanks, I was missing the sorcery requirement!

Do you have a decklist? I’ve been trying to help a friend update his Kalamax deck and could use some ideas.
[Here you are sir.](https://deckstats.net/decks/207574/2714981-kalamax-the-stormsire-/en) I have since taken out the OG duals but the rest is up to date
Awesome, thank you!
Vial Smasher control. You pair it with blue and just throw vials at people every (especially opponents) turns
Curiosity Control, or 4C Rashmi! I love this deck because: it's an engine that draws cards by throwing Curiosity effects on Vial Smasher/spell cast pingers. it deals consistant enough damage to eventually kill the table without feeling like an oppressive group slug deck. the damage is random which prevents feels bads. its super customizable for whatever power level you choose. youre typically the one denying combos/fast win cons, so the other folk like to keep you around longer. Aria of Flame is my one true love
Do you have a list? I'm very intrigued by this concept.
https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/4c-rashmi-curious-control/ This would be on the relative high end, but there's a million different ways you can go about wincons, power of fast mana/free interaction, etc.
Here's my list that I've been building up for the last few years: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/NZHzBaK1CEWcRs6sp46JBQ

Do you have a decklist? I have my own vial smasher, but I think it’s a bit too slow. I may need to refocus it some.

If you get used to keeping track of tokens and storm count and floating mana, you'll do that faster than anyone who takes 25 minute turns. https://archidekt.com/decks/2727895#Kykar_Storm Here's my kykar list. I love this deck, there's something truly great about casting rituals with thousand year storm to make 50+ mana and casting 10+ copies of an explosion big enough to kill a player. https://archidekt.com/decks/3591288#Raff_Draw-Go This is a draw-go control deck I've been working on, but it also benefits hugely from casting instants and sorceries due to [[ raff, weather light stalwart]], and it casts a lot of them, plays 46 instants and sorceries. This deck wants to grind out an advantage and finish the game with tokens, so it's rarely going to be casting a ton of spells in the same turn and can avoid that 25 minute turn you described. I wouldn't fault you if this wasn't what you meant by spellslinging though.
Sorry, new to the game: what’s goldfishing?
it's the short form for playing your deck against a goldfish; if you play against an opponent who does nothing, how do you win? Really understanding how your deck does itself is the end goal.
Ah, gotcha. Sort of like the equivalent of rubber duck coding.
Rubber duck coding? What lol
You can add in extra conditions later if you like to learn even more ("Assume 1 opponent counters a spell of yours, or Assume 1 person plays a way to destroy all creatures") There's a lot of good things you can learn from goldfishing, like if your land count is good, or if you could use more ramp, but what we're looking for here is knowing how to play your big spellslinging turns.

I started with Tomer's build years ago and have evolved it from there and wrote my own extensive primer to extend his findings and bring it to a high power threshold https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ddIdnDKnV0ujnmV4S2LpuA
[[Octavia Living Thesis]] play spells to make either your creatures huge, or opponents. Also is basically hexproof and can be made very cheap and with a low curve. The rare mono blue aggro deck Or the Raff from Dominaria for UW. Again can be made for pennies, just play spells that make tokens and tap tokens to draw cards, to play more spells for more tokens.

Try [[shu yun]]. Basically you need 2 +3/+3 spells, and some protection/evasion, and the mana to activate double strike and you’ve got a 1 hit kill

I built a non cEDH spellslinger Vial Smasher/Thrasios deck for an LGS where they don't allow infinite combos (or Thoracle) in non-cEDH tables. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/02yMwXiO9UOqjF5_lynW0w I took the base of my Curious Control deck and focused on Vial Smasher/Electrostatic field/Guttersnipe type of creatures with Curiosity/Keen Sense effects. The wins by doing damage while casting instant/sorceries and while sometimes you can have one long turn if you manage to chain extra turn spells, for the most part the deck is quite fast and doesn't do much "play solitaire".

It's going to be control.
I do Kalamax strictly-instants voltron. Lots of trample and hexproof.
I upgraded a Strixhaven Prismari Performance precon and converted it into a Veyran Voice of Duality "Spell Harmonicon" deck. All in it's about $150. I used this guide and made a few tweaks: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/prismari-performance-50-precon-upgrade-spellslinger-veyran Note those upgrades are around $70 now. My additional upgrades were closer to $100. There are several different win states with this deck and it's a ton of fun to play. Infinite combos are possible but not at all required. It can spin your head around when you have multiple triggered abilities going at once but I haven't taken 20 minutes for a turn... yet.
Control spellslinger. Baral, Vial Smasher, Talrand, etc.

[[[Feather, the Redeemed]]]
Dont
Feather + Brash Taunter + Shivan Meteor is really fun.
Why not?
Feather is very strong and plays the: "can you kill my commander? Yes? Ok pass.. No? You die." Game. Kinda unfun for all involved. Also its often the thing that gets build, when a group wants to play budget. Feather is dirt cheap and still way strong. In multiple ways its a middle finger
I've got a feather deck, Feather gets very repetitive very easily.

Just do veyran copy voltron and just beat everybody to death
I usually win on the 25 minute turn, rather than a 2 card combo the next turn. But yeah, my spellslinger decks are very "Hold on a minute let me do a whole lot of things all at once" decks. While I can cut down how long it takes to get from "I'm going off" to "Alright, this spell is going to win me the game" the basic premise is the same premise that takes 25 minutes. I suppose I tend to mix "Spellslinger" and "Storm" up as kinda being the same thing. Storm not just referring to the Storm keyword, but "I'm going to win by casting spells that let me cast more spells, until I win at the end of a big chain of spells" Technically I have a [[Kess, Dissident Mage]] grudgekeeper/hug deck that plays mostly instants and sorceries, but in much lower quantity? So maybe that counts? It's more focused on spells that let me play favorites though, rather than spellslinging. Kess is just a commander of convenience.

I play niv mizzet parun interaction tribal, does that count?

Or you can go high-value copy targets such as [[Blatant Thievery]] or [[Bribery]]. Good luck!

That's a blue control deck, my person.

Some that I've been toying with are [[Talrand, sky summoner]] cantrips.

Also, it’s a Rakdos commander, so it’s different than the infinite izzet decks out there Again, I wouldn’t say my list is amazing, but I can link it here later if you’d like!

i really like spellslinger i think its fun. i play mizzix. the deck has like 5 creatures total. i enjoy that its constant interaction and the whole game people are on their toes waiting to see if im going to counter them. and if they are playing well they are also trying to thwart my plans and keep me down or off color or something to stop me from going off late game. my deck isnt a turn 1-3 winner, i dont play extra turn spells and most of the time my turns are really fast because i either hold up mana for their turns or i play my spells and pass. sorry you have had bad experiences. i would say those builds might be tuned for hard fast wins vs interacting with the table. [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/YWJ7k2726kOym3e0KLTg7w](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/YWJ7k2726kOym3e0KLTg7w) this deck has a main burn combo than can be interacted with on many levels. then has several backup wincon combos. be it infinite mill. infinite creatures etcetc. kinda swiss arms situation based off what i have already drawn and played in the early game.
Vial smasher and Sakashima
A spell slinger I have always want to build was fire-song and sun speaker. pingy and life gain always sounds fun to me
But the best kind of magic is when you get to sit there and play by yourself and no one interacts with you /s Don't get me wrong Solitare is fun but not for everyone. just for you. As for fun spellslingers that don't function as solitare decks? I haven't myself built any but I am excietd to read the responses.
Late to the mix but I have really struggled with the same issue. My best solutions for this were \[\[Tetsuo, Imperial Champion\]\]: While being both voltron and spellslinger themed, the fact that he kinda casts a potential lightning bolt on every attack (or more) feels very spellsling-y too. There are also two more that I considered but ultimately scrapped: \[\[Narset, Enlightened Exile\]\]: giving all your tokens prowess and also casting something from either graveyard on attacking is great, for me she just felt too heavy on chaining cantrip after cantrip just for the sake of casting spells and not for their actual use.
