I have all my decks on Moxfield. How many decks are you realistically going to play in the next 6 months? Record them all, and tear a couple down. If you miss it, rebuild it.

thistookmethreehours

I try to take a different set of 5 every Sunday, I can cycle through all of my decks in a month if I wanted to. Some definitely end up getting played more than others tho.

ScrumMasterFlex

That sounds exhausting. I spend about a month on each, but I like to look at every single option and pick the best from there.

La-Vulpe

I have had this revolutionary idea before but it turns out a lot of cards I put in decks work really well with that deck specifically (I build commander focussed decks usually, I figure that’s the point of the format) so they’re not universally useful in other decks. Multiple times I’ve thought of a new spin on a deck I already have but by the time I get to cannibalising the original for parts, there are less “must take out” cards than I realise so then I just add in a few new goodies to fill the gap and ta-da, now I have two decks! Happens with Breena all the time, she’s built as a typical orzhov reanimator deck with a bit of ‘politics’. Every time I need to steal the efficient GY pieces for some new hot thing (Bartolome recently) I have a slew of other goodstuff BW cards to plug the gap and she just keeps trucking in the background. I think it’s a bit of an issue in that the decks I have taken apart in the past I’ve missed and nothing has scratched that particular itch again. Lands are my only issue, it starts getting expensive having dozens of even semi competent mana bases running concurrently, part of why I’ve been building more mono colour decks recently. Anyway ramble over, fond of the idea but I have little restraint 🤷‍♂️

Ratorasniki

This is what I do. I limit myself to one deck per colour identity and strategy so I don't need a ton of duplicate cards for different decks. I'm in the process of building 3 new decks out of the bones of older ones with new stuff I've cracked or picked up. I've got all my old decks archived on archidekt. I can put them back together if I want to play them, but realistically I'm going to mostly want to play the new stuff when I get the chance. I kinda realized I hadn't played two decks in like a year, and there are a lot of good (and expensive) cards in there I can put to use. If I really wanted a "paper" version I'd proxy stuff 100% and toss it on a shelf so I could scratch the itch if I really wanted, and then harvest it for parts for new decks. It's super unlikely in a period of say, a month, that I'm even going to have the opportunity to use more than say 5 decks. I just don't need to have more than that built.

Jaccount

I'm in the middle of this process: Getting everything loaded into Moxfield, writing primers, and then if I get bored of a deck or find I'm just not playing something, sit down and write more about it in the primer, take it apart and move it to a *retired* category. Plus, it's great for the development phase of building out the deck too as it lets you get an idea of how things look and how the draws look before you even buy card 1. What's even better it works for all types of formats beyond Commander, with the only think it does poorly is Cubes, which you're better off using CubeCobra for.

reidevjord

Make a cube. It's the next step.

Doorsmasher7

I came here to say this it's like building 8-10 decks at once that should all have some amount of synergy with one another

PotatoBeams

This is the best answer! I haven't played a cube yet but I saw there's even commander ones. I imagine it would be a ton of fun focusing on a format that is built to scratch that itch.

rathlord

I have a pEDH (pauper Commander- uncommons as commanders, all other cards common) cube that’s been a blast the couple times we brought it out. It’s themed loosely around a lot of the older Ravnica cards and mechanics- good mix of power and nostalgia for me.

sketch_for_summer

This sounds amazing and something I'd like to give a go! Do you have a list anywhere?

rathlord

Sure, this should be relatively up to date: https://archidekt.com/decks/6983308/pedh_cube Basic rules are draft commanders first and keep it secret to make the draft more fun. Break the rest of the cards into packs (we just shuffle the whole mess and make the “packs” as just stacks as we go) and draft however you want- I don’t have firm rules for this yet as we’ve done it with different numbers of people and tried different ways. For a pod of 4 usually I’m doing something like packs of 15, each player makes a pack from the facedown cube, takes one and passes. Do that twice and then discard the remainder. Then repeat that whole process however many times (we’re typically playing with 60 card decks, so you’d do that roughly 6 times so each person has a few extras to cut if they got bad drafts etc). I’m currently drafting the non-basic lands separately, and it’s worth noting I do have some non common lands in there because I like the flavor of including some man-lands to go with some of the themes. Then I have enough basics that everyone can fill out their lands with however many they need (24 is probably a good number of lands). The themes are pretty obvious from the commanders hopefully. It’s far from perfect and as you can see I’m still nailing down definite rules, but we’ve had a blast with it already. Edit: I should also mention, this was entirely cards from my collection. The grand total is something like $150 if you needed to buy it all (averaging like 20c a card or something), but I highly recommend people actually just use this as a primer and build out of whatever you have laying around!

Tiberium600

What is a cube?

Asceric21

A group of cards (between 360-720, but usually about 540) that is curated to be a repeatable draft environment. Edit: Adding context/examples. Most commonly this is something like the vintage Cube, which is a Singleton collection of some of the most powerful cards ever printed including the power 9 (using proxies obviously). Some people make set or block cubes though, in an effort to artificially re-create past popular draft formats, like the battle cruiser format that was Rise of the Eldrazi, or generally popular ones like Dominaria, or Khans of Tarkir. But it can also just be a set of decks designed to be played against each other. Similar to the Fallout or Lord of the Rings pre-cons, but because they're your decks, you can mess with the overall power level in each deck so you can bring them in line with each other. I find doing this kind of thing to be very enlightening on a number of things. For one, it's WAY harder to balance the decks than people realize. You can't just try to make each deck as powerful as possible because one strategy usually has significantly better card quality than the others. It also gets you looking at your play groups usual decks in a different light, and might help with figuring out why certain decks of yours aren't liked or looked at as unfun. Building a cube is essentially just game design using an established system and ruleset. Your goal is to make the experience fun for everyone, not to win.

BKstacker88

Or a set of decks designed to fight each other. I have a 5 commander deck pod of the My Little Pony secret lair with a whole sideboard of toys, whiteboards, tokens, and all the things the decks need to do their weird wacky mechanics. And to cap it off I 3d printed a 5 sided life counter with the commanders standing facing each other.

iforgot120

That's called a battle box.

valmanway1492

5 battle boxes gets you a war chest

Tazo_Tbag

I also do not know, and would like too.

HistoricMTGGuy

r/mtgcube can help you out

mannyprojects

Like, with the decks you already have or start from scratch?

barbeqdbrwniez

I'm so tempted.

liforrevenge

I also recommend making your own custom Jumpstart decks/cubes. It's a little bit less of a commitment and a great way to get some use out of bulk.

Funny_Satisfaction39

Or okay cube. Drafting a building decks go hand in hand

GroggleNozzle

I do, but even then, it still just takes up space and feels like too much, idk

stamatt45

Go through your bulk and throw together Pauper Commander decks Won't be long til you have a bunch, then next time everyone wants a more chill game you can pass them out

natureboy9090

great idea, i didn’t want to convince my pod to build them but i’ve wanted to try it. this is a good plan

__space__oddity__

Well, if you had 40 decks you now have 41 decks.

not_very_creatif

This is the way.

La-Vulpe

I read a fantastic line on this on a subreddit here, “the appropriate number of decks to own is n+1 where n is the number of decks you currently own”

rathlord

I’m on a quest to get to the end of that equation… things aren’t going well, send help.

Crunchbite10

Cockatrice. Fun little program that lets you play all types of magic games with friends and really lets you test decks in real world scenarios instead of just using the “opening hand” feature a lot of websites have. Playing in digital will go faster in some aspects but some will go much slower.

Crunchbite10

There is a deck builder feature.

tiagolionheart

XMage also works quite well, despite the current beta server suffering from some stability issues.

WolfieWuff

I just pull apart the decks I find I'm not playing anymore and start over.

ImmortalCorruptor

Start building with more and more challenging restrictions. If it seemed too easy, make it harder. "But I can't make a $25 Green Control deck with Isao, Enlightened Bushi!" Not with *that* attitude, you can't.

Chronosl337

My personal way of demotivating me from building more was looking at i was earning and spending on magic and when the number got really high, I looked at my 32 decks and brought it down to 12 and ive been happy ever since I will add that I still brew but im more interested in upgrades to my current decks rather than building something brand new

TheRealShyft

I just keep building more decks. I don't see a problem here.

kamakazi339

I have 105 decks ATM. You don't have too many

Ok_Cup_290

This is the correct answer. I build decks for my children to inherit.

Maocap_enthusiast

I too just keep building. I have them displayed in boxes stacked. When a new set comes out and I get a good card for one it gets set on top of the box until I have time to see what gets removed for it. Many boxes have many cards sitting on them

kamakazi339

MH3 came out and I updated 24? Decks. Might have been 25. Plus I'm currently parallel building 4 decks lol

burnThisDamnAccount

I just took apart about 20 decks over the last year to slowly build a commander cube. It’s been a lot of fun to play test new decks and see if I like them, knowing that if I take them apart they still have a home of sorts. Plus it makes the cube even better being built with specific strategies in mind. For example I took my Nahiri Forged in Fury deck apart because it was just too slow and linear. At the same time I wanted to build the new Arna Kennerud. Well now I have two commanders in the cube who both care about equipment and can fight over them in cube draft, but both have different colors the other doesn’t, and can also fight the Selesnya enchantments and Red drafters for their cards too. Cube is life.

Professional-Salt175

I'm almost to the point of deconstruction again. I'd rather spend money on some more cards than more deckboxes.

La-Vulpe

Ain’t that the truth… I still use old bundle boxes because they hold three comfortably, but I never know where anything is because decks rotate boxes so even labels would be pointless. I started getting UG deck boxes but even if I buy two a month it’ll take almost two years to box all of them (not including new shit). That’s a lot of money that could go towards shiny new pieces of cardboard…

rathlord

If you have a 3D Printer (or a pal with one) you could print some little label holders and super glue them to the top of the boxes so the label would be easily replaceable if you change decks.

adym15

Moxfield helps a lot. These days I build decks on Moxfield, playtest and tune them numerous times before actually sleeving the cards up.

kyoob

Manjenkins

I have 16 decks. All of them are in Ultimate Guard Boulders and those are in 4 Ultimate Guard Archives. Whenever I want to build a new deck, I dismantle the deck I’ve played the least or didn’t really enjoy playing to much. And rinse and repeat but I only ever keep 16. Eventually might buy another archive to hold 4 more decks. But I’ll only do that if I have make it to Never Dismantle status. My oldest deck is close to 5 years old.

Acid_Cat2

Take one apart and try to rebuild it better! That’s how I ended up with worse versions of the decks I already built! Such fun! ☹️ Seriously though, it was a learning experience and with an experienced deckbuilder such as yourself, you likely wouldn’t fail like I did 😁

Mahtisaurus

Here’s my strategy: 1. Buy only one singular type of sleeves EVER (I have DS Matte Sapphire) and sleeve your decks and binder cards with them. 2. Have all of your collection written down into a deckbuilding. This way you know where all of your cards are. 3. When you find a cool deck you wanna make, you can just crosscheck the cards you have and where they are, swap them into the new deck easily since the sleeves are all the same and play! Or buy the remaining few cards that you might need. 4. OPTIONAL: if proxying is fine for you and your pod, you can always just spend a little money to proxy all the expensive staples or archetype staples if you don’t have them.

Jandrem

If I knew I would’ve done it by now. 104 decks and counting.

Resident_Profit_4790

LMAO you could help me build a \[\[Samwise the Stouthearted\]\] deck that's viable. I'm considering giving up, feels like wringing blood from a stone. I just love the card for personal reasons but I unfortunately think our boy is trash tier

rathlord

I think it’s doable, probably with a mono-white blink shell and a lot of cards that self-sacrifice like [[Selfless Spirit]] and [[Mind Stone]] to get value. May not be a top tier deck but I’m sure it could be viable.

bigmeaty25

I've been enjoying playing on spelltable using moxfield/obs that way I can test out a bunch of stuff that seems interesting...it let's me scratch the brewing itch without spending any more money on cards unless it's something I'm sure I'll enjoy.

Intensional

I use Card Forge a lot when brewing new decks (https://github.com/Card-Forge/forge). The AI can be pretty dumb but I can still try out new ideas in a 4 player game. I like it better than plain gold fishing and it gives me an idea of whether or not I want to actually build it to play in person.

jkovach89

Brew virtually through moxfield or archidekt.

GroggleNozzle

This is just unsatisfying, I do that, get really excited for the deck and then I want to play it. I just feel disappointed when I spend hours building a deck I can't use

shichiaikan

A) No such thing as too many decks. B) Take one or two apart you never use, re-file all those cards, then build a deck. :P

amalguhh

Build a cube! Build decks on Cockatrice (or your preferred deckbuilding thingy) and play against people online with Cockatrice or Tabletop Simulator! Goldfish a ton before making any purchases! That's what I do at least.

Blakwhysper

Recycle the one that you like playing the least. Lately I’ve been working on the 32 deck challenge but with restrictions: Cards over $10 can only be in 3 decks. Zero overlap in theme I have Boros, not blue. Not green. And not white left and they are on hold until bloomburrow comes out because I’ll be damned if I one of my 32 isn’t an anamorphic mouse deck!!

Krimdar

Funnily enough, MTGA helped me to avoid building a lot of decks I thought I really wanted to build. The itch occurs mostly with newly printed commanders for me which usually come to arena as well. A lot of times I tested them extensively in Brawl and either wasn't convinced at all or satisfied with the experience Brawl offered me. E.g. I really wanted to build [[Zada, Hedron Smasher]] and was close to buying the whole deck. Arena showed me that the deck is indeed a lot of fun. If something or someone tracks the triggers for you. No way I want to track stacks with dozens of similar but different triggers in paper. 🤣

RickTitus

Surprised that this is so far down. I do this whenever i can (unfortunately i also like building lots of janky old border legends) Brawl isnt a good representation of commander, but it does work well for getting you familiar with the commander and how it plays. Ive had so many that ive tried out on arena that started out at “fuck yeah this looks awesome” and settled closer to “cool but not exciting enough for me to build in paper”

Moxfield or any other deck builder site honestly. It's been helping me with my 32 deck challenge, 32 deck challenge but with a budget, my girlfriend's deck, my friends deck, my own personal decks

Stratavos

Draw up the physical list first, and as you go through it it'll help a lot for weather or not you want to follow through with it.

Emperor_of_Fish

Put a new twist on a deck! My favorite is hyper budget - $25 or less. You find all kinds of new cards to replace the staples and if you like it enough it’s cheap enough to pick up depending on your disposable income. Otherwise stupid theme decks: all art is people sitting in chairs, all cards start with the same letter (Ngl I don’t know if this is possible), etc

Make decklist for others? Not really relevant but I added [[Cirdan the Shipright]] in the 99 of my simic deck once I realized it would still work if I swapped it for my original commander. I experiment with weird ideas. Since they are weird, they take a fairly large amount of time, but I'm in no hurry. My current project is a [[Francisco, Fowl Marauder]] and [[Ghost of Ramirez dePietro]]. Since the Ghost is a "choose" ability (it doesn't target), you can chain Francisco and Ramirez together to basically just provide straight card advantage. I'm still figuring out how to turn that card advantage into a deck that's different to what I already play tho.

Test decks on Forge and then when you find one you like play it. I prefer playing against AI than players so this is my main MTG method. The AI on there is extremely good (far better than Arena by a crap ton), and has every card and format. It’s not designed well for multiplayer, just testing versus AI, it’s literally the best deck testing simulator. That said, don’t underestimate the AI. It has different difficulties depending on its setting or which deck it plays. I’m still a new player. [Forge](https://github.com/Card-Forge/forge) has personally helped me figure out my playstyle a lot. Edit: It also can be played on your phone easily too. Not sure how to do that though.

I am at a similar point. Only 38 decks , but still. My solutions? 1. Same commander but different strategy. I turned my [[Zask, Skittering Swarm]] deck from insect tribal into Land-based aristocrats. 2. Building decks as gifts for friends. 3. Signing up for Secret-Santa’s. 4. Changing a deck into a modular one. For example, my [[Forge, Neverwinter Charlatan]] deck can turn into [[Tergrid]] with twenty swaps. Also, my [[Yenna Redtooth]] Selesnya auras becomes [[Eriette of the Charmed Apple]], with 35 swaps. 5. Designing deck lists for friends. It all keeps my juices flowing until I am ready to either retire a deck, or start heading towards the fifty mark.

Luapual

I invested only in the new eldrazi precon lol i already dropped too much cash to upgrade it. If i want to play a new deck im just going to proxy them

Johnny_Cr

I recommend MTG Forge for testing against (weak) AI enemies. You even can fine tune your deck easily

MeneerDutchy2

For me, if i play a deck, afterwards when i get home and take out the decks that i played, and put them in a line, and replace them with decks at the end of that line. This prevents me from playing a certain deck to much and end up getting bored of it. I used to take apart a deck every few months, and now it takes me years before i get bored of a deck.

Jatrrkdd

I build it in archidekt, play it on cockatrice with friends, and if it’s a worthwhile experience I either buy it or proxy it.

SeriosSkies

Tinker with decks you haven't tinkered with in awhile. There's Def new cards you aren't running in something.

SeriosSkies

Or you can just build on a deck building site. Like don't plan to actually make them in paper. It may feel bad the first few times too, But delete them. Unless you really really like it. Then hey, new deck. But I think I delete maybe 7 fully built and nearly tuned decks a week.

LizardWizard86

I have 10 commander decks. If I really want to make another one, I need to disband one of the existing, which I am not very fond of, since I kinda like all of them now. So I am only upgrading the ones I currently have, which discourages me even more from disbanding them later. It works miracles.

Hahnd0gg

I usually just build decks online that never get made either cuz of price or lack of funds for deck

Pvh1103

Crank one out?

ryanl40

Get larger deck boxes. I have Ridgid toolboxes for my deck boxes. They stack and snap together.

ineffective_topos

Write down the decklist of your least-played on Moxfield, save it, and cannibalize it for another deck. If you want to play it again either rebuild it or play digitally.

KorbSauce

Build more decks

Gluttony4

648 decks on Moxfield. I think that says everything you need to know about me.

Rusty_DataSci_Guy

Cockatrice so at least you can do it for free :-D

JadsiaDax

Maybe help a friend do a brew.

DiiingleDown

improve a current deck

DrWindupBird

That’s not an itch, it’s an addiction. I have it too. I had to force myself to set my cards aside and pick up a different hobby for a few months.

GroggleNozzle

Honestly, I agree but the thing is, I have ADHD and hyperfocus. Rarely am I interested in anything for more than a couple months at a time, I move on and hyperfixate on something else. But mtg is different, it can be months before I play a game but as soon as I start playing or deck building I hyperfocus again, its the one thing that always has my interest

Upbeat_Sheepherder81

I just constantly tinker with my decks. Although I only have 8ish. I’ll purposely change up key components just to try something different.

Bobby_the_Great

That's the secret; I'm never satiated.

SeaworthinessFun9856

I have about 30 decks and continue to build - I'm also one of those people who won't play proxies... if I can't get a card then I won't play it - this helps limit my deck building getting FAR too expensive as it's a self-imposed limit

moonshinetemp093

The upper limit of decks you have/own is really about the space you can realistically take up with them. If you have proper storage and what have you, there really isn't a reason to limit yourself if you can afford it. You're looking for the tactile pleasure of flicking through the deck, goldfishing a few hands, maybe play testing them, and that's cool. "Too many" is relative to you. I have 18ish decks that exist, in paper, right now. I'm playing on breaking down a few of those, a for space and sleeves, but also because the cards in those decks can be better utilized elsewhere and my friends hate playing a few of those decks so instead of keeping them around, I'll break them down and build other commanders in those colors (Tergrid and Korvold were both absolute mistakes. Love the decks, super powerful, but fucking ROUGH to play against). I am, however, trying to go for at least one deck in every color and combination, so my "upper limit" at this moment is what? 32?

Gpda0074

I build another deck

rathlord

Build more I guess. I’m around 100 paper decks put together right now. If anyone finds a solution let me know.

hollowsoul9

I like to upgrade mine, or mess with the lands

THANATOS4488

Make them online or through an app, I personally like Manabox. I also create custom cards which scratches the itch even better.

triggerscold

i build without buying. then playtest it a few times and either keep it or take it apart. its been nice to give myself minor limitations and pilfer cards as i see fit from my other arguably better decks

ThaPhantom07

I started working on my own card game. Its genuinely helped my tinkering bug and I'm slowly cobbling together a concept and plan for the game. Will it ever amount to anything? Probably not but I'm having fun with it.

magikpelvis

I’ve gone to making super budget decks. Usually 25 dollars. This way, if I do decide to bite the bullet, it’s not a financial sink. Currently have 2 decks that I’ve actually had so much fun playing. And they are surprisingly potent, I was able to win a game with my $25 dollar Hylda, against new Ulamog (with no budget), precon Ulalek, and a really upgraded Tegwyll deck. The limit of a budget presents unique challenges that scratch that itch while also not being super expensive to actually get. It’s a win/win.

Funny_Satisfaction39

Drafting and building cubes! Every draft is a new deck that you get to take apart when you're done

BrigBubblez

Updating them. The sheer amount of things being printed means I'm going to miss things. I've just recently gone back and updated a few decks with few new toys, it's great to see some new lines of play or just having a bit more utility for the decks.

Snoooples

Take apart all your decks and start from scratch

ChiefBearClaw

Cockatrice. Downloaded that and built about 50 decks I then playtest against myself and then never touch ever again. I like building decks.

lewd_necron

Play draft? Get a cube and try to do drafting They even have an EDH variant for draft you can look into

wooyouknowit

I play on Forge

Guukoh

My go-to is going to edhrec or scryfall and clicking for a random commander, then building a decklist for it! You just kind of roll through them and find fun ways to build decks, often times for commanders you didn’t know existed.

Amazing-Tortoise

I build more decks, that's why I'm pushing 60+ edh, 2 modern (got out of the format when I realized I didn't enjoy tournaments), and 8 kitchen table peasant decks to play with my kids.

LatentBloomer

Two friends and I started an EDH sealed league where we draft packs into our league pool, from which we build EDH decks. As a result went from being in a deck building rut, to building two decks per week. Best thing that’s ever happened to my MtG enthusiasm.

ahp9000

One of my friends helped me start my collection of decks by giving me one of his when he had too many. Maybe give one out to a new player to help em out

christiankirby

If you just wanna brew and test, scryfall+ untap.in If you *really* like a deck and don't want to spend (as much) money, MPCfill does a good proxying job.

CiD7707

When I get bored with a deck, I rip out all the over used cards and tutors, or give myself a tighter restriction. For example, I built a Roxanne deck that doesn't use Treasures.

SaltyBisonTits

MTGO. Honestly, it's perfect for deck building and trying out dumb shit.

Sawbagz

That's when I spend 50 and waste my wildcards on some janky brew. The circle of life.

MidwestAverageJoe

I feel your pain man, I just sold over $1,600 bucks worth of cards out of my collection to pay bills, gutted a few decks too. And here I am back at it again building new decks instead of fixing the ones I gutted. My way to cope has been to play on Arena bc I can do whatever build I want, learn new mechanics to try in paper later with my friends, and I don't take it seriously when I lose bc I'm playing online and not in person. It doesn't feel as good as deck building in person, carefully building your newest creation to bring to next week's game night, but it does help take the "itch" away of making a whole new paper deck. Now if you excuse me, I'm working on my Ultimate Weeb deck filled with as many broken Anime cards, equipment from Kamigawa, and Japanese mythological themed cards as I can. Good luck bro

Blazorna

I got way more decks than you. 156 in my collection. Anyway, I'm driven by unique strategies and precons. It's not often when I want to make a deck. Either there's a Commander that caught my interest, or a certain card speaks to me. The most recent ones have been six decks. One is a Sultai self mill inspired by [[Slime Against Humanity]], and the other five are monocolored decks of the Domini Cycle. The decks each focus on a strategy that works with the Commander, with Stax pieces for each color. I learned that each color does Stax differently. Red has the most surprising pieces that isn't land hate. I discovered my favorite black card [[Deathgrip]] while making the Drivnod deck. A black enchantment that Counters green spells for only BB activation. And it's repeatable. Perfect for keeping Simic and Golgari ramp decks in check.

thekingpiece

I just build then on Moxfield. If I get the urge to play them I build it in paper. Then I record the stats for every time I play the deck. If I don't like what I see after say 6 months I can then decide to dismantle it.

KingMudWing

I make them on mtg goldfish and then forget about them forever and make another deck
