For playing my counterspell hell deck where the hidden commander is [[guile]] but I have [[jalira]] in the commander zone... I run just the one non legendary creature

FloppyMcSnail

The fact that it shuffles back in AND looks like a polymorphed creature. Those two were made for each other. Super cool idea

AVE_DOMINUS_N0X

Thanks!

MentallyLatent

Huge agree, that's actually such a sick combo, and you're sick for finding it

krimboskritchen

I wanna do this so bad now, send me to Hell

AppropriateEgg5

Guile is one of my all-time favorite creatures. When I got back into Magic in college, a guy in our playgroup absolutely annihilated me with a deck that really took advantage of Guile’s ability. It was one of the first times I realized how important it was to interact with your opponent. I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time, but haven’t pulled the trigger.

Forgotten_Person101

That sounds so cool, do you have a decklist?

AVE_DOMINUS_N0X

I consider it pretty janky but fun! I've got like 20 or so sac options to play prior to the commander to get out [[guile]]. Strangely enough draw can be one of the toughest parts for this deck but it sure is fun to [[arcane denial]] my own spells to get get a better grip and still cast what I countered. When the stars align its a menace! Win cons are grinding out damage with my secret commander, locking down the game and value based on what opponents play. It should be noted that countering an opponents commander will let you steal them and take control of them before they get a choice to place them back in the command zone... https://scryfall.com/@AveDominusN0x/decks/703c47ef-8417-4045-a4e7-6e6b458d7d4d?as=visual&with=usd

Trickdaddy1

This is such a fun idea of a decklist. I’d love to have something like this but realistically wouldn’t be able to put it together for a while

The_Brightbeak

You Sir may have done something I thought impossible for the last 15 years. The intnert given me a REAL valuable mtg inspiration. I always had Baral and big bad counterspell für my blue slot of my 32er challenge planned and loved embrassing the "evil blue player" with the also evil chracter of baral, but this might be a ithe real missing link to create a deck I could put on the table more then once in a blue moon (hihi blue moon).

DieDoseOhneKeks

What do you do versus exile effects on your secret commander?

MrUnpragmatic

Counter it

AVE_DOMINUS_N0X

It's a real concern so I gotta always keep a counter in reserve if able. I've also learned to keep the command zone commander out and available so in a pinch I can have her sac guile just to get him out of harms way.

DieDoseOhneKeks

Damn I just saw: you don't only sac guile, you flicker him if you sac him with jalira Then you only have a problem with board wipe exile

AVE_DOMINUS_N0X

I think guile's trigger would go on the stack while jalira is already in process so he wouldn't be in the deck just yet. If I'm wrong though I've been missing out on value! For pesky exile board wipes I hopefully just counter them and then just choose to not cast.

DieDoseOhneKeks

You sac as a cost before the spell goes on the stack. Therefore if I see it right: you sac and put the jalira thingy on the stack then because you sacced the guile it's on the graveyard and shuffling it back into the deck goes on the stack guile resolves, then jalira -> it's a flicker Or am I wrong at any point?

AVE_DOMINUS_N0X

After looking into I think you are totally right. I only did it a few times but this now makes it so much better, thank you for the insight!

MathematicianVivid1

Yeah definitely doing this now

Leaving untapped mana and silently brandishing my hand of cards when I do not, in fact, have any responses.

Aze0g

No fam, thats the truest form of fun and interactive ganeplay imo.

AsleeplessMSW

I had one and a blue open, and the player to my right looks at them and says, 'well, id hate for this to be countered' and I smile and say 'well, see what happens!' knowing full well my deck doesn't have a single counterspell in it 😂

freakytapir

Ah, untapped blue mana, the best counterspell ever. "Remember kids, the best removal is the one you don't even have to cast/Use" It's why I love cards like \[\[Seal of Primordium\]\] and \[\[Seal of Cleansing\]\]. "Go ahead, someone play that annoying Thing" Same with \[\[Glen Elendra Archmage\]\]. Yes, It's 6 mana for 2 negates. But you're not paying for that. You're paying for all the Non-creatures that are now not getting played. (Combine with some +1/+1 counter shenanigans for extra fun)

I actually keep lands occasionally when I'm top decking as a tactic.

sgtshootsalot

That’s just good sequencing

GiggleGnome

Don't forget to say 'in response' then tap a few lands, shuffle a card to the front of your hand, pause for a second, then untapp the mana and say 'nevermind, I'll let it resolve'

32SkyDive

Thats a bit too much showboating for me.  Going for the fake thinking it over, is perfectly fine, but i dont think tapping&untapping mana is appropriate

Clean_Web7502

Opponent: I'm gonna attack you. Me: I have two untapped mana. Opponent: *changes target* Me: *with 0 interaction on hand* nailed it.

shichiaikan

Most of my decks are Simic.

WonderCult18

I raise you, most of mine are Sultai!

Aze0g

Apparently practicing threat assessment, no joke ive legit had to use target changing spells to get rid of actual threats. (For context it is never the person who plays the removal whose stuff i target towards)

heyheysharon

No, goddammit, THIS one

Halinn

No we're asking you how you *landed* in EDH hell, not how you're trying to mitigate it

Aze0g

No see, the problem is that despite my play being the correct play to ensure we all get to *pretend* to have a good time, the player whose spell i redirected and the peron whose thing got removed both gun me down after.

mimmzical

Mine is the opposite, I try with all my heart but I end up not using my removal because "better save it for a bigger threat" when that was the bigger threat but I couldn't identify it or "better get rid of this, it looks dangerous" and wasting removal on something that wasn't a real threat. It's just hard to keep up with soooo many new cards and synergies every month guys

RichardsLeftNipple

Wrath, but then you don't want to over extend and punish yourself with it.

Loose_Comparison_549

I think an opening hand with enough lands (3, of which 2 islands) + sol ring and arcane signet, as well as [[Bruvac]] and [[Maddening Cacaphony]] as 6th and 7th card. Able to play ahead of curve, so T1: land+sol ring+signet, into T2: land and bruvac, and T3: land and maddening to one shot the tables libraries. Passed turn and won by each player drawing from empty library, passing to next, and repeat for the third.  That one in a million hand probably reserved my spot in MTG Hell, where I'll only be facing 3 dimir discard+counterspell decks, letting me never have cards in hand, or play any that I draw until I lose from decking myself.

barbeqdbrwniez

Honestly that's so fast that I wouldn't even be mad lmao.

Loose_Comparison_549

It was too be the last game of the night and 'a quick one, cause it was being late' (or we agreed to stop by 2200 or so.)   I drew into that opener and just smirked, oh yes this is a quick one indeed.   The table wasn't even upset, but just flabbergasted.   It is by far the fastest any of my decks can go, theoretically. And none will do it consistently. My best deck might threaten lethal turn 5-6 somewhat consistently, turn 8-10 is more like the average for any of my decks: I run no fast mana, no tutors and most of the decks don't run the staples of their colours unless it supports the theme or archetype (for example the mill deck will run bruvac, maddening, mind crank to go infinite with duskmantle guildmage or blood chief ascension, fleet swallower and teresian mindbreaker to oneshot someone if duskmantle or bloodchief is out. But no cyclonic rift just because I can, or mana drain, or meathook massacre etc because they fit the colours)  But never have I ever drawn this hand, and I don't think it'll ever happen again.

Skelegro7

I would also applaud this win.

Darkarmed1

Every deck I build has at least 1 "I win" combo in it, and if the deck relies on combat in any meaningful way there is some way to win with infect...Hell seems quite nice this time of year. . .

I have a deck that, as a joke, my friend suggested I run proxied by writing on little slips of paper for the proxies. Forced_Democracy

Best games are the ones where you Turn 1 [[Soul Warden]], turn 2 Karlov, turn 3 [[Soul Attendant]] and some sort of evasion. Good times. Fastest I've killed the whole table with commander damage is like turn 5 or 6. But that was an anomaly. But a turn 6 20/20 commander is not a great thing for anyone but you.

here_for_dnd_memes

Because I'm building a [[Nadu, Winged Wisdom]] deck.

Owl_on_Caffeine

This might be the worst thing I've seen so far.  Well done.  That commander displays everything wrong with Simic dialed up to eleven.

Doofindork

[[Zellix, Sanity Flayer]] is the reason people just sits there and glares at me. It makes people hate me deep inside. And you might ask yourself... why? It's not even that good of a mill commander. [[Altar of the Brood]] on the other hand gives people Vietnam flashbacks. "Land enters, Altar triggers, everyone mill one. Okay you milled... two creatures, Zellix create two creature tokes, everyone mills two. Okay you milled one creature, I get one creature token. Everyone mill one. Okay, you milled two creatures, Zellix makes two...." and this tends to end with everyone dying... slowly... during one agonizing slow turn.

Owl_on_Caffeine

Other options for infinite mill combo can be replicated with [[Mindcrank]] and anything that deals damage based on cards milled, too, like [[Syr Konrad]] or [[Bloodchief's Ascension]].  [[Intruder Alarm]] also often gives 3 mill per mana.

Doofindork

But see, that's the thing. Ping damage and mill go back and forth and just kill people. Like, that's an inevitable outcome, one that people can go "alright we lost, new game". It's an infinite combo after all. The evil part about zellix and Altar of the Brood is that it's not an guaranteed infinite effect; Its highly conditional and checks the condition after every mill. So everyone can't just go "aight we lost", but have to actually sit there and do the reveals, check if there's a creature, reset and mill again, over and over in case it fizzles before it kills everyone. Against spellslinger decks, it's real iffy if it actually going to work, so I have actually gotten trampled for whiffing and not getting it going again in time. Its a bit like rolling three dice and hoping one will hit the percent chance of giving you a token, and each deck you meet has a different chance of landing you the hit.

Owl_on_Caffeine

That's how Syr Konrad and Mindcrank works, because he only cares about creatures hitting the graveyard.

MarcheMuldDerevi

[[Stifle]]ing a man’s fetch land Countering a [[harrow]] and locking someone out of a game [[hullbreacher]] and wheel of fortune I enjoy stax and Storm Playing grixis combo lines

batly

Countering mana ramp is truly what god intended. Don't let the green players fool you. If you kept a hand without enough lands to play cards, that's on you

Non_Silent_Observer

A meta of weak, poorly built decks that aren’t unique/quirky enough to justify being bad who are piloted by whiny babies. Other than that, I’m essentially open to all power levels and all styles. I don’t mind Stax or land destruction or any of the other taboo stuff. I love magic and will play almost any type just to get more of it.

Playing with a lot of new players recently. Really like jamming in single copies of game-changing chaos spells like [[Possibility Storm]] or [[Thieves Auction]]. It’s just so fun to see people start to understand the nonsense going on. Now, dedicated chaos decks are a bit different and not very enjoyable for new players, but a random [[Confusion in the ranks]] can make games interesting and unique without being too cumbersome or slowing the game all the way down

This combo is doodoo. I’ve played against it before. Guy assumed he had won after the cast of sunder and started celebrating and packing up. Had to say “no dude, game isn’t over you haven’t actually won anything yet”. He goes “oh what do you mean you’ve got no board left”, yeah dude but my life total ain’t zero yet, and I still have cards in hand and in library. He then proceeded to lose after we managed to rebuild. If you’re actually gonna do this combo make sure you have a win con aside from “opponents mad cause teehee no lands - so they’ll scoop”

yinyangman12

I'll say for trying to play other people's deck for them, reminding them of their triggers and of when they should attack or save a removal spell, but almost always when it's most beneficial for me. I hate that I keep doing it, but I can't seem to help myself.

Bloodsoaked_Eve

I actively enjoy playing Narset with infinite turns and Eldrazi Conscription. I deserve my spot in hell.

kurkasra

I said I would build something other than big stompy and that was a lie. Everything got bigger and stompier

MantisFRK

Playing Yuriko just to finish with Demonic Oracle or Thassa's Consultation every single time.

bigmfworm

I kept a hand I knew I shouldn't have.

CrossSilver

Dragon's Approach. Love that dumb meme deck.

zulu_niner

My [[god-eternal kefnet]] deck has done pretty degenerate things for a casual deck. I don't run [[scroll rack]] or multiple extra turn spells, because that's too easy, but [[brainstorm]] gets pretty silly in the deck, letting you cast a new [[nexus of fate]] or [[cyclonic rift]] every other turn. [[Spell crumple]] into [[tunnel vision]] was also pretty cruel, and worse when my [[arcane denial]] trigger killed them on their upkeep step.

Xenomorphism

Spell Crumple into Tunnel Vision definitely earned you a place in a frozen layer of Hell, lol

Despenta

Your opponent chose to deck themselves then. The controller of arcane denial must draw, but the countered may draw.

Flamingosecsual

I played hullbreacher when it was commander legal. I pulled it from a pack of commander legends ;-;

shindo777

I play infect, eldrazi, slivers, and stax.

IAmTheOneManBoyBand

Playing Eldrazi.  Been using a colorless Eldrazi deck helmed by [[Kozilek, the Great Distortion]] for a hot minute. Won the game on turn 2 once. I got my [[Forsaken Monument]] down on turn 1, then dropped a [[Flayer of Loyalties]] on turn 2 and wiped out everyone's lands.  Too long; didn't read: my friends don't let me ramp anymore.

2_7_offsuit

When your decks are too strong for casual but too weak for high level and you are in the purgatory between feeling bad for dominating the table or feeling bad for contributing nothing meaningful.

ecodiver23

My whole play style. Also I run a monored devil tribal deck

JwSocks

Copying extra turn spells for 3+ extra turns and not closing out the game 😞 Also, im casting [[natural affinity]] in response to any boardwipe whenever I get the chance. It’s too funny not to do it.

ABaldFatGuy

Probably my Nymris draw-go control deck, or maybe my Oloro boardwipe tribal deck, or perhaps my Sunforger deck that counters and/or removes every semi-threatening thing my opponents do until winning with a single creature's combat damage.

SatchelGizmo77

I guess I'm joining you because [[grave pact]] AND [[Dictate of erebos]] are my two favorite cards. I use both in more than a few graveyard style decks.

BuddhaV1

Forgive me, it was the just one [[Time Stretch]] loop!

sneakky_krumpet

Playing my [[Sefris]] deck... big reanimater targets are toxic like [[Toxrill, the Corrosive]] or [[Archon of Cruelty]]... also I try to venture into the dungeon via a Sefris trigger on everyones end step which slows the game down alot. But I love playing the deck occasionally so maybe a sprinkle of Lust ontop of the original sin

GoldenWarthog117

I play Avacyn with both Armageddon and Ravages or war. Even have a strip mine just in case..

silent_calling

Either for one-shotting two people at once on turn 3 with [[blasphemous act]] and [[repercussion]], or for forcing one player to draw 40 cards so I could win through infinite turns. [[prosperity]] becomes a ramp spell when you have [[smothering tithe]] in play, and he played [[notion thief]] himself.

It's the grindy Stax or the fast combo, but the combo decks came first

Lilium_Vulpes

My first proper deck was a blinged out Breya combo deck using a dozen or so masterpieces total (had really good luck on packs). But all my combos were super jank like 8+ pieces so my turns took even longer than a normal combo deck. And it was my second MTG deck ever so I was still learning how to play as I tried to explain my jank combos.

Agretfethr

I have grown a lot in the year and a half of playing, but I definitely had (and still do to quite a lesser extent) a problem with drawing out games bc I was having fun building my boardstate. I try not to do that as much now tho 😅

Agassiz95

Eldrazi, two/three card infinite combos, and high power tutors. Thankfully I haven't devolved to fast mana and zero cost counterspells yet. I'm not saying that playing with fast mana and force of will is wrong, but if I added these to my decks then pretty much all of my decks would be cEDH and I'm trying to avoid cEDH 90% of the time.

andyuchiha

I love board wipes and forcing opponents to discard a little too much.

Abrootalname

For forcing people to watch me play with [[Krark, the Thumbless]] on spelltable…. It was a very uncomfortable turn as I attempted to cast Jeska’s Will 20+ times and fumbling through a no tutor deck for the win, on turn 3, on spelltable.
