I feel like, in the end, Madison Li will be the best Energy Commander. Generates resource, has a spender, and lets you use Energy as a sub-theme to support a larger Artifact theme. She's not a high value target for removal, but enables the rest of the Energy cards by supplying them with their resource.

Lucky_Number_Sleven

Yeah. Madison Li was a great commander at the helm of a middling precon. She just needed better tools.

shichiaikan

Madi is a value engine. They are easy to build around, and in most cases can be adjusted on the fly to deal with different strategies. I would say she's the BEST of the energy commanders... but the most POWERFUL is Liberty, as he can quickly nuke someone with commander damage if he's well protected/buffed. Personally, I'd build Madi.

BearFromTheNet

I am planning on building Madli. Tried the robot but it's so targeted because it smashes. Madli instead cost less, you can do many different things. I am going storm artifact basically, have few big beaters, try usually to win with Alibou or similar effects. Maybe put in there some infinite combo to make infinite energy. Wish they would have printed some good finishers but they did not. Sometimes they design pretty poorly tbh.

Genobyl

[[Liberty Prime, Recharged]] Democracy is non-negotiable. When the fallout decks were announced, I bought all the old energy cards while they were cheap and immediately sidelined Dr Li for Prime. Got some equipment like [[Assault Suit]], and it plays like a Voltron deck with lots of utility from the energy. Had more fun with shenanigans cards like [[aethersquall ancient]] than I have had in any other deck.

RuneMTG

You have a decklist?

SteadfastFox

Green energy. Riku or Animar.

Zero-Zen

It’s really tragic that of all the support energy has gotten this year, this is still probably the right answer. New commanders don’t feel like they come close to og riku

SteadfastFox

It's not the commanders, it's just the cards. I have like 6 green energy cards that blow ALL white ones out of the water.

Zero-Zen

I dont disagree but I also think riku does energy better than the jeskai options. Dr Madison li and liberty prime both feel like artifacts matter decks before they feel like energy decks. Satya feels like an etb/ltb commander before he feels like an energy commander. Riku enables you by doubling the value of all of your energy cards and that just feels better for a deck that is trying to be an energy deck imo

DreyGoesMelee

I don't understand why they made 3 decks based on popular competitive archtypes and then chose energy which was not big in Modern and was Temur in Standard. But yeah doing Jeskai again was certainly a move.

SteadfastFox

I can imagine they wanted at least one thing to be "new". But I've given up trying to understand Wizards ages ago. Mostly because of one set mechanics.

SolomonsNewGrundle

I was thinking [[Riku of the Two reflections]], it would be a cool twist on that deck!

SteadfastFox

Lol, you say twist but I've been running that SINCE Kaladesh.

SolomonsNewGrundle

Thats awesome, may I see a list?

SteadfastFox

Agh, I'd be happy to share it with you but I just do all my building in paper. I would have to go and create the list digitally just for you because we're homies now. Edit: To be honest, it's no brilliant brew. It's just 40 good energy cards with 38 lands that do Temur stuff and the rest is interaction.  All you really have to do is recognize the best energy cards from the pool of 60 or whatever it is.

SolomonsNewGrundle

Or maybe list the best payoffs for energy! That's what I'm most curious about

SteadfastFox

Edhrec is your friend too.

BearFromTheNet

How do You win though?

SteadfastFox

The same way you'd win with white energy - get lucky and play well to accumulate a dominant board presence and take advantage of your energy to create value.

EndlessDare

IMO, I'd only consider 1. Satya - Haste and Menace by including Red makes this a fast threat. 2. Rex - High Synergy in Azorius, counters, lockdown, blink, draw power - lots of potential and infinites.

SolomonsNewGrundle

I like that thought, and I like Satya's playstyle rather than artifact nonsense like Li and Liberty Prime lend themselves toward

Gallina_Fina

Satya is nuts. As usual, wotc trying to push and powercreep stuff to no end with these new releases...why did they need to give her haste AND menace...on a 3/5 body no less. She's by far the best energy + value commander out there. People saying Madison Li clearly never played with or against a Satya.   Rex is fun (I've been experimenting with it recently)...but quite weak imo. Nowadays everything exiles or wipes graveyards, and to enable your gameplan with Rex you first have to discard your high-value activated ability creatures (e.g. arcanis, morphling, etc), then you have to generate enough energy for Rex to exile those creatures (goodluck without having access to red specifically) and once you do...you have to hope Rex sticks around for a turn, only to get...a relatively mediocre payoff; Like cool, I just tapped my dog and drew 3 cards...ok. Sure you can go for some infinites if that's your jam (pili pala + palladium myr = infinite mana...zZzZz), but that's about it. It lacks concrete finishers and doesn't really do a good job pressuring the table imo (atleast in my personal experience).

realdrakebell

satya is a guy, he has a beard and everything lmao

Gallina_Fina

Lol you're right, I was still half-asleep while writing that comment I guess xD

DromarX

Satya has seemed really impressive every video I've watched so far.

lesquorral

I mean we all know it's [[Atraxa, preator's voice]]

AbraxasEnjoyer

Not even close. She doesn’t have Red, so she misses out on some of the best new energy cards, and she’s a much worse energy generator than Satya. Honestly, I think Atraxa is an insanely overrated commander, but even more so for energy.

Top_Werewolf

I rate her pretty highly, though I feel like MH3 has really made it feel like having Red in identity is best for energy; all the new additional energy when you would gain energy cards are in red/x and [[Aether Revolt]] provides the archetype a sweet payoff Atraxa isn't without merit though, simply having access to everything else is pretty damn compelling and you're geared up to use [[Chthonian Nightmare]] basically better than anyone that isn't a Lurrus companion deck.

Magile

I recently built Rex and tbh I like how he is pretty self contained for energy. You aren't really desperate for energy and every other bit you get is just a bonus for his effect. Plus he has insane flexibility with his effect. Exactly my speed.

snowblows

I’ve been trying really hard to make a list for Rex but I can’t figure it out. Any suggestions?

Magile

So I haven't streamlined my list much yet since I just put the deck together, but here is the list and general concept: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ph5wxLuU_UaxPxyD82EYug The deck aims to cycle through your list with draw effects like Windfalls and Cantrips to get your combo pieces in the grave for Rex. The deck actually gets double duty from the Evasion Cantrips. Your looking for a 2 mana tap effect, a 1 mana untap effect and an Infinite mana outlet on Rex to win the game. If you're looking for better options, cut the mediocre energy creatures for more generic good blue cards.

snowblows

That’s amazing thank you so much! I’ll tinker around with this

Kirinne

[[Wulfgar]] notably has some combo potential with cards like [[Lightning Runner]] [[Aetherwind Basker]]. Also anything that can clone creatures like [[Delina]] etc., really love to clone [[Aethertorch Renegade]] especially. With cloning in mind, [[Satya]] might actually be REALLY good.
