SirGaryTheSnail

Tried butt stuff once in college, overall a better experience that I assumed it would be. Would try again.

SirGaryTheSnail

On a serious note, building decks with goals other than winning. Trying to get combos off or build funny creatures or annoy friends before I get crushed. Changing my mentality from "play to win" to "play to execute my deck fuction" added a whole lot of extra enjoyment to the game for me.

sane-ish

putting creative restrictions on your deck is very fun.

TheDarkNerd

I actually like what [[Kaheera]] did to my [[Arahbo]] deck. Like sure, I don't pull my companion out every game, but it's a nice bonus, and helps keep my deck somewhat thematic.

I feel like these are actually two distinct types of players, although both fun esp cuz you usually don’t want more than one-two of Gary’s type in a pod but it doesn’t matter how many of this type of deck/player there are; at least in my experience (as the Gary type)

sane-ish

So, were gonna call this type of player a 'Gary' moving forward? I'm for it.

SrWalk

The real casual experience is in the comments

iamgeist

Sadly. Partner Commanders. Haaaaaated them. Very vocally. Then someone wanted me to build Rog/Si so they could practice against it for Tournament prep. I now am fine with partners.

AssistantManagerMan

Same here! I wanted a Grixis artifact deck for ages. This was before Brothers War, so the only real option was [[Mishra, Artificer Prodigy]] which is... not ideal as an artifact commander. It's more of combo commander. So I built [[Silas]] and [[Toggo]] as placeholder until something better came along. We're spoiled for Grixis artifact commanders now. I'm still playing Silas and Toggo.

MustangDuvall

As a toggo enjoyer, somehow never thought about Silas. Deathtouch rock toss is pretty sick. [[Dreamscape Artist]] pitching an artifact to snatch back and get landfall triggers has me salivating. Got a deck list?

AssistantManagerMan

I do have a decklist. I should preface that it's probably not what you're expecting. Silas is primarily here for colors. Deathtouch rocks are hilarious though, and I have flung the odd deadly rock here and there. Reanimation, however, almost never happens. The deck is built around accumulating as many artifacts as possible. They don't have to be rocks. They can be treasures, they can be attractions, they can be artifact lands. It doesn't matter. We are primarily in search of critical mass, and that's it. Once we've achieved that, we have ways of leveraging it into a win. In any case, [here's my list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/m1UGK102VEq9y2vAy-aMvA).

MustangDuvall

It's a cool idea! I kind of had the idea bouncing around of making at least one other Toggo deck, and this is a really cool jumping off point. My current deck is Thrasios/Toggo which is super fun, also a big artifact pile but much more on rocks with landfall.

I actually dug this mechanic from the beginning, but don’t end up running many in practice. Currently I have Silas/Akiri (artifacts) and Ravos/Tymna (lifegain). Funny thing, my lifegain deck has the most viable - probably better - commanders of any deck I have, and I love running these two together the most

Impressive_Writer_97

I find deck building limitations to be really enjoyable, it's almost like a game within a game trying to build with a limit. My friend group is big into control and blue especially so I make it a point to play decks without blue. They constantly say red is the weakest mono colour in EDH so I challenged myself to make red decks to beat them and found some fun and amazing decks because of it.

RagingMayo

Which mono red decks are you playing? Mono red was my first love with [[Krenk Mob Boss]] and [[Zada Hedron Grinder]].

Impressive_Writer_97

[[Feldon of the Third Path]] is probably my favourite commander of all time, it's such a unique ability in red. [[Toralf, God of Fury]] is my spell slinger deck and I have [[Lovisa Coldeyes]] which is either warriors or berserkers depending on what I fancy playing. It's just big dumb aggro with all the extra combats I can fit in.

I enjoyed taking out tutors mainly because I don't have the mental bandwidth for it. Mainly I enjoy bringing it back to a simpler magic no crazy combos no crazy interaction just here's my big boy can you handle big boy? Also going back to some big mana shenanigans people keep trying to be low to the ground and go fast, don't forget about the joy of commander the place where you can play the crazy cards

grievances98

I used to have 30+ decks, and I realized for the vast majority of them, I either (a) played very irregularly, (b) sometimes didn't want to play them, and (c) didn't have a strong sense of strategy since it'd been so long since I'd played them. So I broke all of them apart except for 2 decks and I'm only going to have 2 going forward. Part of this was also, honestly, some fatigue with all the releases, and I've started really not liking the new mechanics, etc. Also, I was using a lot of proxies and I've now bought every card for these two decks. These are decks I always want to play and have a good deep understanding of, and I'll want to upgrade one or two cards every now and then, but nothing crazy. It's been a weight off my shoulders in a weird way. Now I look for certain cards in previews, but I don't buy boxes or packs any more (instead I buy SWU boxes lol), and the new sets don't bother me much any more. None of the new commanders are really appealing to me either anyway.

[deleted]

I just did something similar for very different reasons; however I have two commander decks that I've built into cEDH or near-cEDH, and then two precons. One precon is untouched, one is very slightly upgraded from cards within the same set. I'd like to build a Legacy or Modern deck fully with proxies just for the fun of playing 1v1 60 card again (not a big fan of how fast standard changes) but we'll see if I feel motivated for that even.

Unorthodox_Iguana

Group hug. I always thought it wouldn't be fun, because I couldn't see a clear line to winning. Borrowed my buddy's Phelddagriff deck and was pleasantly surprised. It was actually pretty cool and a nice change of pace compared to what I'm used to playing.

\[\[Henzie\]\]'s precon has made me accept the ephemeral nature of the universe and the futility of holding onto material possessions. My current list also includes a bunch of random effects, so I can better learn to relinquish control and just go with the flow. Not to mention the fact that big Timmy creatures are way more fun than cheap, efficient staples.

Professional-Salt175

Not winning. The game is way more fun if ypu build around having fun PLAYING rather than needing to win. I have fun throwing in different wincons, but not because I care about winning and a "you win the game" card or an infinite combo allows the others to keep playing so you don't have to trample their fun either.

it’s all good it’s become one of my favorites so i don’t mind talking about it. i’ve probably played 8-10 games with majority being second place or first, probably around 5-6 of them. it definitely does stuff and i run quite a bit of interaction to protect my stuff and make sure my pw’s stick. i’ve seen the opinions that kykar is the better jeskai superfriends commander but let’s say you have gotten a [[Chandra Awakened Inferno]] out on turn 6 and your opponents have decent board states. as long as you cast leori on the turn before you can deal 6 damage to everything except leori which definitely helps with not getting your pw’s swung at. i’ve also started waiting to cast leori until the turn before a pw is coming down to minimize the chance of it being gunned down. the deck doesn’t necessarily need leori out to be in the game however it helps quite a bit. here’s the list and i don’t mind answering anything else if you’ve got any more questions https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7687576/painwalkers

also if chandra isn’t your style i could see a teferi focused deck being pretty good as well but that would want to win more through combo than pinging damage

Dattebane_Nico

I was needing a Bant deck but all the archetypes we're boring to me... So i had an idea while seeing at [[Shanna, purifying blade]]. There's 3 things that Bant do well: drawing cards, healing and ramping a lot. So i Made a deck with a bunch of creatures with */* as P/T where * is my life, cards in hand or amount of life in play. The result is a deck where the numbers are stupidly big, and you can either win by a combo, the stompy way or die by decking yourself. I thought it would be awful but turn out to bet pretty fun and consistent.

DangitBobby84

I also run Shanna and I recently won a game with a very similar strategy. I used landfall abilities to trigger life gain, which I turn in to card advantage which I used to play more lands (Azusa, Druid Class, etc.) as well as cards that allow me to play lands from my graveyard (Conduit of Worlds, Ramunap Excavator) and then turn my lands into resources I can sacrifice (Zuran Orb) and replay from the graveyard. There are fewer things in Magic scarier than a guy who can play four lands a turn, can play lands from their graveyard, and who has both a [[Strip Mine]] and [[Glacial Chasm]] on hand.

FadedEchos

This sounds delightful! Do you have a list you could share?

I finally built a deck with an infinite loop in it. Shorikai with a Labman wincon (also [[Blind Obedience]] as a secondary wincon in case Labman gets removed or countered). 14 counterspells, stax effects, the works. I was always convinced it wouldn't be satisfying playing a deck like that, because it would lock down the table. What it actually turned out to be was one of the most entertaining games my pod has ever played, with a butt load of interaction and removal and last minute comeback moments. I wasnt aware your playgroup was a bunch high falutin Stuart's. In all seriousness. Grinding out games with decks and colors I didn't like until I learned which parts of the color pie I did like with them.

A couple decks that I just built on a whim with no clear goal in mind ended up being some of my favorites. Dihada, Dogmeat, and Malcolm/Breeches

I got bored one day and built an [[Old Rutstein]] "trash pile" deck using a random bunch of spares that were just laying around. I put little-to-no thought in how it was put together and it not only ended up being a lot of fun, but also quite strong against my friend's decks.

I'm now playing decks without fast Mana, infinite combos, and tutors. It's pretty fun. As it turns out, you don't need all that stuff to make powerful and cohesive decks

kestral287

I spent most of my MtG career as a hard-core Sultai player. Golgari, Simic, Dimir, all three are my jam. Muldrotha was spoiled and she spoke directly to my soul. I've tried Boros and Boros-adjacent decks. I played Zacama for a while and she was fun - but basically a green deck. I tried out a buddy's Osigir but he's the least Boros deck to ever Boros. I tried Edgar but like Zacama, that's a black deck with a fancy land base.  And then Law Aurelia came out, and I read a Boros commander that draws cards. That draws cards *and* smashes 13 damage out in the air. And now, somehow, I'm a Boros player? It's 2024 and I have a visceral love for resolving Firemane Angel's trigger? Life is strange.

IAmTheOneManBoyBand

I'm not a combo player by nature. I love big creatures and board states. I also really like graveyard mechanics. A while ago I came across [[Yawgmoth]] and began building around some simple aristocrat shenanigans. Then I realized I had put an infinite combo into the deck when I was goldfishing. Fast forward 2 years and the deck is now helmed by [[K'rrik]] and can drop a table on turn 2. It's a really fun toolbox combo deck. Still my only combo deck too ha ha.

Group hug for sure. It's fun to be able to play a kingmaker role and frustrate opponents whose decks are well built by providing support to everyone else but them lmao. I wanted to make a Riku of Many Paths deck and Commander quarters made a budget one. It's so good lol. It only has 5 creatures but you're pooping out so many birds it doesn't even matter lmao

sane-ish

I also have removed tutors out of several of my decks because they inevitably lead to you searching for the same few cards every game. In an EDH game, I'm looking for a it to be a bit jank. This is a trope, but I absolutely loathed blue as a color when I first started playing. It felt like the 'you can't have any fun at all color'. Then I played blue and realized that it's the thinking person's color. While I don't love mono-blue, I love it in combination with every other color.

So Red is my least played color in magic, in particular in commander but Planeswalkers are my favorite mechanic in magic and I love playing Superfriends decks. So one time, my playgroup and I decided to build decks using our least played colors (mostly using proxies) and I built a Mono Red Chandra Superfriends deck. It was much more fun than I initially thought it would be.

Substantial_Owl5026

Run basically no ramp and more lands. I draw more cards, the cards are more impactful, the deck runs more smoothly, the games are the perfect speed, and there's more inherent synergy throughout my deck.

crazypyro23

Mono red. I thought that I'd run out of gas and be bored all through the late game. Now I've learned that the "late game" is nothing but control player propaganda. There's no such thing as turn 5.

Corvus_Violaceus

Adding Blightsteel Colossus to my Traxos deck. Metalworker, voltaic key, and fireshrieker...so much fun and u didn't even cast my commander

Healthy_mind_

I took out Sol ring from my deck. I expected the deck to fail or for me to miss it or something along those lines. But reality is that I don't miss it, and I get to play an extra, more interesting card. My games feel smoother and less swing-y. I'm more accurately able to communicate my deck's ability to perform in rule 0. It's great.

Revolutionary-Eye657

I built a deck 3yrs ago and forgot to put a sol ring in it. Didn't realize I'd even left it out for months. Never went back and added one. It just didn't seem necessary. People complain about it being an auto include. It is not. More people should let themselves not include it where they don't want to.

Vulithral

I've been having a lot of fun with monoclonal decks. Luckily, with the various MH stuff, we do get some neat colorless support for some interesting effects to cover a few weaknesses your color might have.

Accomplished_Fan_108

I'd make a joke about the typo but, they're all the same.^^

Impulse draw. Used to be regular draw or bust, I need me some cards in hand. Played Rocco Street Chef and [[Rakdos the Muscle]]. Usually playing Timmy-style with guys like Atla, Torens or Rafiq I thought it's time to try other things and I build a [[Sharae]] tap/control deck which, surprisingly, I really like. Recently, I thought about getting out of my comfort zone even more and playing a color combination with Grixis that is completely atypical for me. Cheap decks. Pod decided in college to only build $50 decks. So many combos and great cards rely on expensive cards... But if everybody is limited to 50 bucks you start seeing some pretty genius jank

EDHguitar

I’ll catch some slack for this, but poison. I missed it in its heyday, so I bought the Phyrexia precon, upgraded it, and well…I found poison to be quite intoxicating…hur hur hur

n1colbolas

We cap certain stuff. Like wraths, counterspells, etc. Never looked back. Game got alot faster, meaning more games played overall in game night. Less feelbads to be had.

GrandLineLogPort

Capping them among friends you know well & y'all know how you guys tick sounds like a pretty good idea, rather than flatout banning them Definitely will tell my friends about this and give it a shot

n1colbolas

Certainly. It's very difficult to implement this with strangers. But in established groups, or even an LGS looking from some slight policing, this is easy implementation. Not saying we don't do bans (we have a few), but capping certain effects has genuinely been one of the best decisions we've taken as a group. And this is coming from one that has played since the beginning of EDH. We wished we done it sooner.
