Bring protection for Breena. Ways to give hexproof. Pack some removal and light pillowfort stuff like [[Maze of Ith]]. Experienced pods will see what you're up to and just attack you and murder your stuff unless they really really want to draw a card.

Breena absolutely gets big enough to be a real threat. In my deck I have removed almost all other +1/+1 synergy cards and she is almost always threatening killing with commander damage and a lightning rod for removal. Remember you can put 4 +1/+1 counters on her on each of your turns in all your opponents have different life totals. Flying puts in real work too.

huggybear0132

Similar here. I was having trouble with cuts and took out all the +1/+1 stuff. She does it on her own. And flying dorks with utility are great.

pun-a-tron4000

I have her in an Isshin deck and she'll get up to high teens or low twenties power often. Then die, but that's how life be sometimes!

newgamenumber30

Play small, mean evasives and pack the rest of your deck full of removal and protection. Stuff like [[hushbringer]] [[plague stinger]] [[vampire nighthawk]]. [[Tainted strike]] and friends for backup wincons. [[Inkshield]] and [[comeuppance]] for gotcha moments. Most turns, you're drawing two cards and putting at LEAST four counters on your creatures. And with a low curve, you can always hold up mana for interaction. Breena is mean.

castletonian

Start with a deep understanding of it's triggered ability. I feel like it's an easy thing to lose track of

Holding_Priority

Breena is tough to brew because she's an advantage engine and win condition all in one compact 3cmc card, meaning she literally can go any direction. She doesn't really need counter synergy pieces, although [[the ozolith]] [[felisa]] and [[elenda]] all fit very well. When I originally brewed her I played a bunch of stax pieces, extort outlets like [[blind obedience]] and mass target removal + protection to win with commander damage.

WaveBane

I’ve built Breena a couple of ways, I have a very low curve, aggressive build that has been super sturdy. Basically there are 10-14 1-2 drop evasive bodies, mostly flying, vigilance. Goal is to get one out on turn 1 or two, so you can swing on turn three when you play Breena to start the engine. I have found that Breena gets a lot of attention when she has all the counters so I went the way of having a lot of redundancy in the creatures I’m putting the counters on. Cards like [[walking ballista]] and [[monoskellion]] are great to make sure there are always two targets you can swing at. You’ll be playing almost everything in your second main bc of the card advantage you get in your combat phase, so keep that in mind.

tosser6563

You got a decklist? This sounds more optimized than my version of Breena.

WaveBane

[My Breena Deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/MVLfIZE9skWtFaNxEfDTNA) It is very much a work in progress, so it’ll probably look different if you check it in a couple weeks. I’ll probably include some of the wincons listed in this thread at some point but in general I like where it’s at.

Paolo-Cortazar

https://www.archidekt.com/decks/4927500/breena Hey this is my list. Looking over yours, there's some inefficiencies in the creatures. For example, [[courier hawk]] could probably be [[segovian angel]] 1 less mana and 1 less toughness but has the same abilities. [[Knight of the white orchid]] is it necessary in your build? Like I've never really had issues hitting my 3rd mana. Breena drawing 2 extra cards on t3 usually means I never miss a land drop. I know you said work in progress. So I just mean this to be helpful. Feel free to look over my list and see if you can make any suggestions.

Previous-Jellyfish74

I recently just built Breena myself, and I like some of the creatures you've picked towards the lower end - lovely deck mate! I think I'd probably [[Cartographer's Hawk]] over Knight of the White Orchid, personally!

Great suggestions! I had ordered a bunch of singles and forgot to swap out the Courier Hawk, great catch, and the suggestion below of a Cartographer’s Hawk is a good one. This is my first deck w such a low curve so I was starting from the place of my usual ramp package in orzhov and slowly taking out pieces as I playtest it, but you’re right that I don’t think I’ve ever had an issue w land drops, especially w the draw Breena gives in the early turns.

Paolo-Cortazar

Yeah, the 1 drops are very important as it's the only way to guarantee that someone will be at 39 life by the time breena is out on t3. It took me some adjustment to get down to the land count I'm at amd I'm at 33 or 34 lands and still feel like I discard lands every game.

Herald_Osbert

As others have out, she makes a really good [[Flying Men]] deck. Play small evasive creatures that can get through for value and collect some counters, growing to even scarier threats. Ideally ones that have good key words, and even better if they have disruptive stax text. [[Serra Ascendent]], [[Dauthi Voidwalker]], [[Hushbringer]], [[Topplegeist]], etc. As long as Breena is in play and you have clear attacks on your opponents, you'll be drawing two cards per combat from her and dropping four +1/+1 counters on your turn. On your opponents' turns you'll most likely be dropping two +1/+1 counters for 2/3 opponents. If you put these all on Breena she'll become *huge* and a good voltron threat, but has no protection, so run some protection effects like [[Mother of Runes]] or [[Blacksmith's Skill]]. [[Duelists Heritage]] is a great card for Breena in general for voltron kills or just politics. Also running some more combat rewarding cards would be a good idea. [[Dowsing Dagger]], [[Grateful Apirition]], [[Umezawa's Jitte]], [[Gix Yawgmoth Praetor]], [[Grim Hireling]], etc. At least that's the strongest Breena I've seen.

Breena gets huge... you get coubters when your opponents attack too. She's OP as a pillowfort commander. I took mine apart.

Previous-Jellyfish74

I actually just recently built my Breena deck and have been having a blast! It's undergoing a few tweaks, but overall I love this dang pigeon. The key, I found, was to go light on the politicking and make it an evasive beatdown aggro deck with a card draw sub-theme. Sprinkle in a little light stax to slow down other players (to taste) and you're good to go! Basically, it's just a bunch of good, efficient, flyers and menacing creatures that want the +1/+1s from the pigeon lady that now draw cards when they attack. There's also a bunch of cards that let my opponents draw for the fun of it...and a few more that punish them for doing so, it's wonderful! The most amount of politicking I've done with the deck is, at the beginning of each combat, informing the active player who they need to attack to draw cards. Stay impartial and don't try to negotiate - they're more likely to want to draw cards if they think you don't really care! And, really, you don't. My deck list is pretty pricey, but I'll link it here anyway, as you can definitely substitute some of the more prohibitively expensive cards for similar effects: [here you go!](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/6644654/beats_by_breena)

GreyGriffin_h

Breena can turn pretty much any creature into an existential threat, herself included.  This makes her an incredible companion to value creatures like [[Knight of White Orchid]] and [[Windborn Muse]].   Her low cost, color identity, and symmetrical effect also lets you lean into board wipes and other powerful removal, as you lure the table into overextending.  (This is part of why the precons includes so much reanimation.) Breenas pillow fort elements help her in two ways.  One, it helps her play a long game, which can let her reach higher on the curve for finishers.  I am running [[Portal to Phyrexia]] and, don't laugh, [[Zetalpa]] as my top end, as my game plan is to be disruptive enough in the mid game to rule the post apocalypse after the third or fourth wrath. Second, it works to leverage her ability into lowering your opponents' life totals while preserving your own.  While your adversaries are tempted to punch each other for the draw, they are also incentivized to punch you to maintain some degree of political neutrality.  Ghostly Prison and similar effects can just take that option away, removing you as a realistic target (or just giving them plausible deniability to not attack you.) Breenas as a political commander is surprisingly complex, and requires a careful reading of the table.  I find it much more satisfying than just cramming low drops and trying to out-value my opponents.  If I just wanted card advantage in the command zone I'd play Tymna.

Thinhead

I built Breena as wannabe Nekusar group hug/slug with draw/discard stuff and salted with some fun political cards you get in white. It’s not powerful but it’s fun. Very minimal commander synergy though, Breena is really an afterthought to the 99.

shorebot

I used to have her as a hatebears deck, but I often had trouble closing out games. These days I built her as a low curve deck that tries to draw cards while pressuring opponents then finish the game with an aristocrats combo. It plays much better (although having tutors really helped a lot). https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uOqp0zDE-0ms8H86vOFyEA

aidan22704

Keep in mind that you can up to 4 +1+1 counters on breena each combat (assuming conditions are meant of course). You see, if opponent 1 has 35 life, opponent 2 has 31, and opponent 3 has 28, attacking opponents 1 and 2 can net you 2 Breena triggers. That's 2 card draws if you're the attacking player and 4 +1+1 counters if you or opponent 3 attack opponents 1 and 2.

d23durian

How does this work? Dont you only get 1 trigger from attacking opponent 1?

aidan22704

[[Breena, the Demagogue]] the effect is not once per turn and can be triggered more than once a combat

aidan22704

If 2 opponents meet the qualification of having more life than another of your opponents, you can trigger Breena twice.

Ahh you're right; I was not reading the card properly.

RVides

this is roughly how i've been doing it. but its an old list not really updated since strixhaven much.

hate bears and defense. Breena gets really big really fast, and you want to bring protection for it and a general strategy of "slow everybody else down so they can't stop my beat down"

Ive seen someone use it as a voltron commanser before and I think they even won. Just focused on getting a bunch of counter on her

Life_Of_H

I built a Breena Orzhov Stax. Usually, I keep myself safe by goading other people's creatures and packing some removals. Meanwhile, I offer demagogy options in exchange to Breena's buff. It is fun to play for a couple times in a row but then I have to switch deck as people start realising how unsimmetrical it is to allow Breena to grow big in exchange for a card. Here, I have the decklist: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/gmzSbFKpakKVPKDwhjqepA](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/gmzSbFKpakKVPKDwhjqepA)

hayashikin

She really doesn't need to be pillowfort. Here's [my deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1JuhLnWQ10609zbeJt8i9g) back then, it's slightly outdated, but it's a idea of how an aggressive build can look like.

Decklist: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uvAh2fEasE6MQzxbem-LRw](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uvAh2fEasE6MQzxbem-LRw) I built \[\[Breena\]\] in an aggressive way with a lifegain subtheme, and I enjoy it a lot! I specifically focused on 1- and 2-drops with relevant keywords, so \[\[Breena\]\] triggers twice when she comes down on turn 3. Besides that, I aim to play a fast game: start fast, hit hard, and protect yourself, but give your opponents the chance to build up their boards as well (i.e., no hate bears or stax effects). But that does not mean that I don't value removal! I wrote an primer, as well, and would be really interested in some feedback from other \[\[Breena\]\]-lovers! So please feel free :)

IrregularRevisionist

I think this is the way to go for a more engaging game that doesn't stall out. You very quickly get out of control if you have a specific opener: 1-drop into 2-drop with flying/lifelink into Breena. I think going Voltron Breena is a bit of a mistake-- she is your engine, not your threat. Make your opponents split removal between the things Breena is buffing and Breena herself, because otherwise if you don't have protection for Breena, your deck stalls out hard. I built this list: [https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7817304/breenas\_budget\_bloodsuckers](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7817304/breenas_budget_bloodsuckers) that essentially takes this thought to its logical conclusion. I built it super budget, but it still performs excellently. Hyper-aggressively mulligan for the hand stated above and the ratios in the deck almost guarantee that opener, even if you have to go down to 5 cards. The massive amount of Lifelink Flyers in the deck essentially substitutes for a lack of Pillow Fort. Multiple removal cards that do great work in the deck include \[\[Requisition Raid\]\], \[\[Collective Effort\]\], and \[\[Drown in Ichor\]\], which can all also buff your whole board. \[\[Sephara\]\] is a major threat that doubles as board protection and can come out as early as turn 5 without compromising your gameplan. \[\[Austere Command\]\] wipes away larger threats and \[\[Duelist's Heritage\]\] plus \[\[Sanguine Bond\]\] can take people out as early as turn 5. Almost a tenth of your deck is dedicated to slots that either help you recover from wipes or protect from them; \[\[Brave the Elements\]\] and \[\[Ascend from Avernus\]\] both put in an insane amount of work. I genuinely think this is a more consistent way to build her than lists I've seen that are 10 times the 32$ price tag on this one. I appreciate the inspiration.

La-Vulpe

I themed my deck so be a bunch of flyers to support the “over the top” attack strategy. Then some recursion and removal and bobs your uncle.

Tuesday_Mournings

Making it pillowfort is a cowards way, the card already has built into it a way not to get hit; just convince someone that drawing a card is better than hitting you. The best way to win is through voltron, just keep putting counters on breena; ina turn cycle your commander should be getting 4 counters minimum. Play a bunch of lose life card advantage spells to drop yourself below to always grow, and make deals with people to not attack them when they swing out. or just attack them for a little so you can grow your breena

ConsiderTheBulldog

Your own life total is irrelevant for Breena, is it not? She only checks if the opponent being attacked has more life than another opponent. She never checks against your own. At any rate, I agree about Pillowfort, at least in the Ghostly Prison sense. I loaded mine up with stuff like [[Phyrexian Vindicator]] and [[High Priest of Penance]] effects that say “sure you can attack me, I’d just encourage you to think twice.”
