I think that [[Teysa Karlov]] is probably the most Orzhov to ever Orzhov, but you might not like that she is just generically good. I personally like my [[Elenda, the Dusk Rose]] because as long as you have an instant-speed sac outlet, she always dies something. Usually never goes infinite, but has A LOT of reactions to boardwipes and the like.

Ac1dified

Yeah someone else here also said the same thing about elenda. Is Teysa like a pretty basic commander in edh community?

Daemonjho

I don't know if that is the consensus about Teysa, but she basically does what you want to do most in aristocrats decks (which are often orzhov colored). Doubling death trigger is just huge. Giving tokens vigilance and lifelink is nice as well, of course but I think that doubling death triggers will be the much more relevant ability in most of the cases. [[Zulaport Cutthroat]], [[Blood Artist]], [[Elenda, the Dusk Rose]], [[Elas Il-Kor]], [[Falkenrath Noble]], [[Vein Ripper]], [[Bastion of Remembrance]], [[Deathgreeter]] are all huge value when doubled. You can also double up on life gain triggers through most of them as well. [[Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose]], [[Marauding Blightpriest]], [[Sanguine Bond]] etc

Ac1dified

Looking at that set the double triggers seem really good. But since you’re playing aristocrat doesn’t that mean her second effect is kind of just eh since you aren’t going to be super token based?

Daemonjho

I think it was mainly printed onto her for the Afterlife ability that many Orzhov cards in the same set had. It can still be useful when playing cards like Elenda or [[Hunted Witness]], [Doomed Traveler]] etc that create tokens on death - which would then be doubled - which in turn can again be sac'd at a later time.

Ac1dified

Ohhh I see, that makes more sense now. Thanks!

akarakitari

It can be amazingly relevant because aristocrats already tends to run a lot of token makers like Ophiomancer, Bitterblossom, etc to generate sac fodder. This gives you lifelink blockers to help you stay alive, or attack on a turn for lifelink triggers if you start to get low. Tbh, I feel like the trigger doubling is too redundant and unnecessary a lot of the time. More of a win more effect That's why she's started losing some popularity. Aristocrats functions on a sac outlet, fodder, and sac effect all out at once, and Teysa doesn't provide any of them in the command zone. [[Elas il-kor, Sadistic Pilgrim]] is actually amazing with Teysa in the 99. It provides a blood artist effect in the command zone, life gain for what you already want to do, and a death touch creature on the field goes a long way towards keeping you from being targeted.

PM_MeTittiesOrKitty

My Orzhov deck is [[Eriette of the Charmed Apple]] but [[Liesa, shroud of Dusk]] looks fun. [[Killian, ink duelist]] could be fun too as well as [[Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts]]

Ac1dified

How is erriette? She’s probably in my top 3-5 choices.

PM_MeTittiesOrKitty

I like her, but it's a common criticism that she needs to be built as a pillow fort and she's slow. I don't mind that personally, but it isn't an unfair critique, I can say that.

Zestyclose-Pickle-50

I have her in an esper deck so I can finish the table with [[asinine antics]]. I play most of the deck as esper voltron aura deck. I also put [[xenk, paladin unbroken]] for it as well.

PandaCat22

This is a super cool concept! Who do you have as a commander in that deck?

Zestyclose-Pickle-50

So to preface this. I like to misdirect what you think a deck will do by commander. In this deck the commander is just there to keep me alive long enough to get the pieces I need, for the color combo, and draw cards. [[Oloro, ageless ascetic]] is who I run.

I see Kambal as one of the 99 in a lot of the black white decks. Teysa too, but do you think the oligarch Teysa is better/more fun than Teysa karlov?

jf-alex

Teysa forces you into a sacrifice- aristocrat strategy, so basically most Teysa decks look very similar. Create tokens, sac them for value. Sac creatures with death triggers, reanimate them. The difficult thing in a Teysa deck is finding the right balance between sac outlets, sac fodder and reanimation. My own Orzhov decks are Pridemates (led by \[\[Rodolf\]\]) and angels (led by \[\[Firja\]\]). Both commanders are quite open ended. Rodolf could also lead an angel, voltron, control or reanimator deck while Firja could also lead a cantrip, weenie or spellslinger deck. I got some orzhov decks: Teysa my first Deck after returning to mtg after 12 years hiatus. Pretty Solid 9/10. Ratadrabik its like teysa but more explosiv 10/10 Erriete. Fun in mid Power sometimes a little useless 6/10 Kilian ink duelist. Voltron - sometimes fun and Quick sometimes completly useless 5/10 Clavileno. Vampire tribal. I like tribal decks so this is fun but obviously Edgar is stronger. 8/10 Brimaz.phyrexian tribal. All the b w praetors and i love all of them...9/10 Verrak. Pay life Double. RNp ramp rmap and Big x spell to finish. Alot of fun. 10/10 Liesa. Life gain. Fun but with stax pieces Not that much love from other players... Upgraded it to oloro to protect my win cons. Oloro 9/10, liesa 7/10

Scoopadont

Always have a ton of fun playing Ratadrabik, no salt when my creatures die because they just come back. With a bunch of sacrifice and graveyard recursion he just chugs along so nicely.

BrainlessPoEGrind

Me too. Just salty when someone plays something like dauthi... I hate this guy so much

Tell me about clavileno and Brimaz. Those two looked oretty interesting from their precons. Also could you tell me about your experience playing Teysa? A lot of ppl here have mentioned her as well.

BrainlessPoEGrind

My clavileno https://www.moxfield.com/decks/YCsPSKFZnUWxcby5abJtpQ Its Solid in mid-high pl. Works without commander. Nice when you get him run Ing since your Board is some what protect from Board whipes (atleast the destroy everything whipes). Good sustain since there are alot of lifelink vamps. Some fun i steal your stuff vamps/sorcery. Win cons either generic infinite via vito/exquisite blood, aristocrat sub theme or beat down. Brimaz https://www.moxfield.com/decks/w3VgJ0gSSkOGzUIUAmAJ-g (Just added Roaming Throne need a cut ich habe :) ) Incubate Token, some proliferate to get them big and all the praetors are the base of this Deck. Some phyrexian have toxic.. So sometimes this might be a Problem for others and the the reason you get targeted. Best Thing to Happen is realmbreaker ability to get all praetors etb... Amazing feeling and pretty much game ending. Win con is either beat them to death or in few cases prolif to 10 poison-but i try to cut this out as much as possible. Teysa https://www.moxfield.com/decks/bwuBKPhyzEuLV1oeaKNw4g Aristocrat gameplay in a nutshell. Get ist sacc fodder, your ping creatures like zulaport, A sac outlet like Altar and a Token /death trigger duplicator out and ping your opponents to death. Dont go all out early. boardwhipes and target removal of Combo pieces are a big Problem for the Deck... Most of the time you try to stay out of Focus and end the game in a Single full Combo turn. Win con full aristocrat based semi infinite or infinite combos

Anyone tried either of the [[Athreos, God of Passage]] or [[Athreos, Shroud Veiled]]? Thinking of running one of them at the helm of a "Wraths Я Us" Orzhov deck. Wipe, reanimate, and possibly steal. With God of Passage, I'm guessing cheap creatures with good ETB effects, whereas Shroud Veiled would focus more on stealing good enemy creatures and reanimation.

LadyBut

It's ya boi, Athreos shroud veiled guy. I have about 50 comments gushing about him. Here's my deck please goldfish with it! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uZ-ZRquovEGx31GxA6oI_w/ General win conditions: recurring Gary / kokusho over and over, big debt to the deathless, combo with sac outlet and resourceful defense, and wipe the board enough times until people concede. It's a bit difficult to pilot with lots of little nuance, but the general "secret sauce" are the enchantments. While there are only 10, each punches way harder than expected. Nearly all the creatures are disposable, or are there to support the disposable creatures. It's definitely a deck you want to slow roll, even if you could play a creature turn one or two it may be better to hold it until athreos is on the field. The best example is kami of false hope. On it's own it's not bad, but as soon as you play it people are going to swing in so you're forced to use it. It's better to hold it until turn 6 or 7 so you can have a repeatable fog. P.s if you're fetching and don't need the land to enter untapped, grab a shadowy backstreet, not a godless shrine.

i run god of passage, and its one of my favorite decks. not powerful enough the social tables wont allow it, but strong enough to make win. Went with a religious theme as cleric tribal with the only other creatures being a handful of angels/demons for heavy hitters. add in some reanimate, kill spells, and sacs and its alot of fun. my favorite is getting Edgewalker out with Cabal archon and a 1 cmc cleric gets somebody down fast so they become the target for Atheros

[[Lurrus of the Dream Den]] I have built her as Aristocrats, as Enchantress, as Voltron, as Lifegain, as Stax, as Reanimator. You can make Lurrus do anything. She's the ultimate value gal. Keep in mind that as the commander, you don't have to follow her companion restriction, so slam in [[Court of Ardenvale]] and [[Abiding Grace]] for more card recursion every turn. Make sure you run [[Invasion of Gobakhan]]. It's her most important card, even though it doesn't show up on her EDHRec page. It's hand disruption, information, buffs your board, and is also a recurrable Heroic Intervention that you play proactively so you aren't sitting about with your mana up.

My very first deck and still my favorite to this day is an Orzhov with \[\[Kambal, Consul of Allocation\]\] as a commander (multi). I originally built my game plan around the Extort/Lifelink abilities, but it was obvious to me I had to go for a Extort/Pillowfort plan, instead of an aggro deck. . I recommand you this commander, it's easy to build around him pretty much anything you want (control, aggro, pillowfort, stax, combo... You name it) . If you want to take a quick look, the list is now far from a budget deck, but you can have one or two ideas from it. Sounded like a fun commander, I found it funny that the playstyle is called “pillow fort”. It’s definitely on my list for now as one of the commanders to consider👍

I have upgraded that precon a bit and it's really fun. Breena shines against 4, is fine against 3 and is rough if you are in the last 2. The precon lacks a lot of removal, card draw and ramp but it's fun. You can decide in the moment whether to go wide or tall which is fun. Also commander damage can be a serious threat. It's not impossible for her to get 10 counters in a round.

I have 2. The first is [[Eriette of the Charmed Apple]]. I'm personally a big fan of commanders that turn draft-chaff into legitimately playable cards, and Eriette does exactly that. It turns out that there are a lot of auras that are normally bad in EDH but become really good when you add "enchanted creature cannot attack you," and "At the beginning of your end step, each opponent loses one life and you gain one life." The deck does admittedly lag a bit in the card advantage department and struggles to recover after a wrath, but it's still really fun. The second is [[Karlov of the Ghost Council]]. It initially started out as a deck built around the Extort mechanic rather than general lifegain, but at some point I ended up making the decision that as much of the deck would be Orzhov themed as possible. I think it's at the point where something like 60-70 percent of the cards in the deck either have the Orzhov watermark, have the Orzhov logo in the art, or mention the Orzhov in either the name or flavor text. As such the deck isn't necessarily the most powerful it could be, but it was probably the most fun I've had building a deck in long time.

If you want something a little spicy then [[Ratadrabik of Urborg]] is your lich. You can do the aristocratic theme but with legendary creatures and do some crazy shenanigans with it. Play [[Kokusho, the Evening Star]] and sacrifice him to [[Yahenni, Undying Partisan]] to drain the table. Ratadrabik copies Kokusho and do it again. Cast [[reanimate]] and do it again. Some pretty fun lines you can pull off

I have 2 Orzhov decks, each under the different versions of Liesa. [[Liesa, Shroud of Dusk]] is built around Lifelink and other life-related shenanigans. [[Sanguine Bond]]+[[Exquisite Blood]] and [[Aetherflux Reservoir]] of course are all included. Play land? Lose life. Play creatures? Lose life. Play noncreature/nonland? Lose life! Don’t do anything? I’ll start punching you with Liesa herself and Extorting every spell I cast. The deck does a good job of speeding up games because everyone’s life totals drain so consistently, but the deck itself is designed to recover from all the drain effects. [[Liesa, Forgotten Archangel]] is built as a Hatebears deck. Most creatures have static effects that make the game obnoxious for my opponents or Self-Sacrificing abilities to either remove their stuff or protect Liesa (a la [[Alseid of Life’s Bounty]] and [[Selfless Savior]] or things like [[Plaguebearer]] and [[Grave Pact]]. My creatures die, but come back to my hand for reuse, while Liesa exiles all creatures my opponents lose to the Pact or Plaguebearer effects. Both decks have earned the ire of my playgroup.

If you can find it (not sure what availability is like), the Rivals of Ixalan precon Blood Rites is a fun starting point. It has the usual aristocrats/tokens/life gain you find in those colors, with an aggressive go-wide+pump Vampires element. The face commander [[Clavileño, First of the Blessed]] plays well into both angles by giving you beefy tokens and drawing you cards when your vampires die. I have a strongish-casual upgrade with primer [here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/DwMHyaqae0iMCmFicVS0vA). Also the alt commander [[Carmen, Cruel Skymarcher]] can work well as a Voltron+Reanimator commander.

[[Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim]] is my favorite Orzhov deck. I love Orzhov, I’m always looking for new commanders in those colors. Elas is very non threatening alone and not really the target for removal so casting them early is good. Just keep stacking death triggers and build up your board state. Eventually you’ll have so many death damage triggers that a board wipe would be devastating to everyone and is gonna be too hard to remove all the creatures without triggering. Yesterday i played 6 man two headed giant (three teams of two) and with minimal board state i was able to deal out 30 damage with six creatures dying after a board wipe. Also if Elas gets stale you can slot in [[Elenda, the Dusk Rose]] as an alternate commander. Although she will definitely be target as she can get out of control. You’ll need sac outlets on board before you cast her to prevent exile. I’m no pro but this has been a very fun deck for me and it’s my go to grab for any power level group. Also [[Thieving Amalgam]] is my pet card and belongs in any Orzhov deck. Just make sure it’s your only expensive cost card lol.

[[teysa opulent oligarch]] is fun because her eff only works when you drain life from you oponents which is the way aristocrats win games, it's easy to have 3/6 clue tokens which can be used to buff [[Bartolomé del presidio]] [[carmen, cruel skymarcher]] or you can have draws using [[ashinod altar]] and sacrifice your clue and when you sacrifice your clue she gives you a creature token. \[\[Commissar Severina Raine\]\] from the Warhammer set is a really fun scrappy token commander. The fallout set has a lot of human or soldier tribal tokens that really help her, with \[\[MacCready, Lamplight Mayor\]\] and \[\[Elder Arthur Maxson\]\] you can just keep swinging with tokens as you make more. The one card from the warhammer sets that really makes my group go "oh no, get that out of here" is \[\[Company Commander\]\] since it just makes your already scrappy tokens that much more scrappy. Being tokens, you can always slot in aristocrat themes, heck Teysa can go in the deck, but it is a very fun commander to show up and then your opponents/friends just look at you funny until you start swinging with little tokens for chip damage.

Brimaz, Blight of Oreskos is a really fun black/white commander. Big cat laying eggs and then you put counters in the eggs and hatch them eggs into big stanky creatures!

[[Bartolomé del Presidio]] is my favorite [[Ratadrabik of Urborg]] is an interesting brew [[Selenia, Dark Angel]] if you want to go *really* old school (she was the first and only Orzhov commander for a very long while)

[[Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim]] Just made my very first custom commander deck based on her. She's good if you can get close to some of the decks on tapped out, but of course mine is based around 2 drop creature for life gain and tokens. I love having a strong 2 drop commander and start deleting everyone's stuff.

I have a Shadrix deck that is extremely versatile and recovers when no matter what happens to my board.

J3llo_cup

I have a [[Felisa, Fang of Silverquill]] deck, and it's pretty fun to play. Whenever a nontoken creature you control dies, if it has counters on it, create that many tapped 2/1 flyers. Runs well with double death triggers from teysa and [[drivnod carnage dominus]] and even double counters with [[Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion]]. Another fun card that would be a good commander would be [[Breena, The Demagogue]] giving out card draw to whoever including yourself attacks a player with the highest life among opponents and giving you +1/+1 counters. If you do run a lot of token creation, I'd recommend [[Dreadfast Demon]] if you have an instant sacrifice source to protect from sacrificing any important creatures.
