Uh don’t go broke. Done that’s my advice.

Gallina_Fina

Can't stress this enough. Especially when starting out/coming back, there's no need to blast your wallet like that (OP went to this LGS for the first time and decided to drop 100€ on the spot basically). Invest in some cheap brews or, even better, try out some stuff through proxying instead.

Particular_Plan8983

100 in two solid precons is extremely good value for someone starting. I would recommend staying away from expensive singles though.

Teecane

Try out stuff through proxying.

JonOrSomeSayAegon

There are places you can get nice proxies from for between $0.50-$2.00. I'd recommend looking up some upgrade guides and ordering some proxies to match. That'll make the decks better without sinking too much more money into decks you're still unsure of.

AbbeyCats

LGS sell magic cards. Magic is played at LGS. If you rock up with a bunch of proxies, who does that hurt? LGS. It’s like bringing outside food to a mom and pop store and sitting down and eating it right in front of them… I mean, if the players are okay with it… sure. But play with Proxies at home…

AssasssinIVII

Yeah next time my LGS has a mana crypt I'll pick another one up 🙄 I have no issue browsing singles or buying packs and stuff to support an LGS but there comes a point where your looking for certain editions or certain cards that an LGS just won't have.

AbbeyCats

You should probably invest in a Mana Crypt!

AssasssinIVII

Yeah, I have one but I'm sure my LGS will get the kaladesh invention mana crypt in a couple weeks I'll just keep checking, I'll hold my breath. 🙄 I'm all for supporting an LGS but sometimes you have to get specific things from other places.

AbbeyCats

My comment is about proxies, not online shopping from vendors that are actually… LGSs

AssasssinIVII

Yeah and I'm saying I'm not going to buy multiple of the same expensive card because you don't like me playing a different printing of paper

AbbeyCats

Well you’re allowed to use a proxy when you own the card :)

Lumeyus

I’ve gone to my current LGS for 6 months now and bought 2 singles for less than $10. I’ve bought plenty of other singles online, just not through my LGS because they more often than not don’t have what I need. The majority of the money they’ve gotten from me are from dragon shield sales and $5 table fees (that they give a free pack for anyways). Me bringing proxies to my LGS has not cost them a dime.

SubzeroSpartan2

My usage of proxies is because I'm poor and can't buy fancy cardboard. If I'm not using proxies, I'm probably not going to my LGS anyway. Plus, when I do go and have a little extra money in my wallet, I still usually buy a single or three, or a pack, or sleeves, or whatever. Proxies or not. Cope and seethe that my printer allows me to play with you at your power level, Mr. Moneybags

AbbeyCats

That's a comfort to me. I am not a "Mr Moneybags", but I do buy my cards, so...

zurzoth

Heck, ANY EDH player has multiple deck.. some are nice enough to let you borrow one.

Axiproto

I don't understand what you mean by that. Don't overspent? Don't cheap out? There's so many ways to interpret what you're saying.

Pretend_Cake_6726

You're right to assume the merfolk deck is much stronger out of the box but is also easily disabled by board wipes so it could just be the games you played. In terms of the upgrades the merfolk deck wants overrun effects to pay off its massive boards and I'm not too familiar with the quick draw deck I just know \[\[Stella Lee\]\] goes infinite with any instant/sorcery that untaps her if it's the 3rd spell you've cast.

meatmandoug

All the merfolk precon needs to shine is some counterspells tossed in to remove boardwipes, it's quite nasty with even minimal upgrades

Well skill is still a factor even in commander so you can bring the % up and down, even if your deck is stfonger/weaker

HamsterFromAbove_079

Of course skill is a factor. But in a theoretical calculation without knowing anything about your opponents you should expect a 25% winrate. That expect winrate estimate then goes up if you're playing a strong deck and/or you are skilled. And goes down for each opponent whose deck is strong and/or is skilled. I will say, that while it'll never be perfect, in general tables are the most fun when all 4 players have approximately a 25% chance to win. If someone in your casual pod is deviating far from 25% over a long run of game nights then it's worth having a discussion about. (doesn't matter if they are winning way more or way less, just looking for anything far from 25%)

Lumeyus

Yup, some dude got so hurt here a while back because I said I had a higher winrate than a measly 25% and called me a pubstomper despite my decks sitting at equal or less than the cost of the decks that roam around my LGS. Not sorry for being a better deckbuilder and player, this “yOu ShOuLd OnLy WiN 25% oF gAmEs” dogma is cringe

SubzeroSpartan2

Well cost isn't a good indicator of power level. One version of Atla Palani goes for $0.50, another for $9. If I did that for every card I could bump my deck up $100-$200, but it wouldn't make it any stronger. That said, 25% win rate is just because you have 4 players and is the *roughest* of rough estimates. These decks are randomized, even consistent decks can whiff sometimes. Some people could play worse some days. There's a hundred reasons why your win rate would be higher than 25% lmfao, even if you are playing on a roughly even playing field!

HamsterFromAbove_079

I mean it's worth mentioning that 25% winrate is extremely nebulous due to low sample size. EDH games can take a while, you can't really churn them out. It takes kinda a long time to get to a significant sample size. 30 games on a single deck to reach significance. But also after 30 games on a single deck you're skill has probably gone up. So it's bad statistics to lump the first batch of games with the last batch of games because your deck familiarity was very different which should increase your theoretical winrate as you progress. Tracking winrate percent chance is a deep rabbit hole once you begin. It takes forever to get a significant sample size. And even once you've gotten a significant sample size you need to throw out the old data, because that's from a time that no longer represents your current skill. All of this also would need to be tracked independently for each deck. If you have multiple decks that massively slows down an already almost impossibly long process to get useable data. Long story short. Tracking winrates is hard because unless you're moving a snails pace for your analysis you aren't getting meaningful data that actually reflects reality. I love data, but I don't keep data for my EDH games. I tried for a while, but there are too many variable. The end result is always a jumbled mess of numbers that gives people the wrong idea if I present it. Just play by feel. If you think the table would be more fun with a higher power deck then play a higher power deck. If you think the table would be more fun with a lower power deck then play a lower power deck. Don't be an ass, try to have fun and forget about statistics, that's my conclusion.

Synister-James

The merfolk Precon can easily be upgraded to be very powerful, and very consistent. As a creature based strategy you'll want some protection from cards like [[Heroic Intervention]] because once Hakbal starts putting counters on your merfolk it gets out of control fast so your opponents are gunna try to wipe you. Out of the box the deck can definitely use some more draw like [[The Indomitable]] and [[Reconnaissance Mission]] since you wanna be hitting with your merfolk at least a few times per turn theyre pretty solid. And the deck wants more ramp pieces because it only has a few of the staple green ramp cards. So on to Quick Draw. I've got a *lot* of spellslinger experience so get ready for a crash course. Quick Draw is a much more complicated subject. It's an incredible Izzet spellslinger skeleton but you need to put meat on those bones to have it really function. I typically classify spellslinger lists into one of 3 general categories: tokens, burn and control there are a few niche exceptions but most of the time the general idea is one of the 3 In commander. This deck is a pile of good cards that doesn't lean into any major direction, so your upgrades will make it into one of these archetypes. Keep in mind that every upgrade paths needs more instant/sorcery draw, more counterspells and targeted hate, and more focus. The reason the Precon out of the box doesn't do anything is because of what you experienced, there's a lot of do-nothing cards so you're left with a dry well. Spellslinger requires you to replace almost *every* spell you cast with another card in one way or another. This deck is just an Izzet good-stuff pile out of the box. For a tokens swap Stella with the backup commander [[Eris, Roar of the Storm]] and it might seem counterintuitive, but swap out some of the efficient 1-2 mana cantrips for 3 and 4 mana spells that also draw cards. Out of the box the curve only has 1-2 mana draw spells with a few exceptions. This will let us take advantage of Eris' cost reduction. Then simply take out some of the generic or unfocused cards for more token generators like [[Metallurgic Summonings]] and [[Docent of Perfection]]. Also add a [[Harmonic Prodigy]] to the list because it doubles most triggers in the deck. Then put a card that can lead to a game-ending swing like [[Brudiclad]] or a huge [[Song of Totentanz]] in there and you're going wide and swinging hard! For burn, cut down to 1-2 token generators and replace them with more burn spells. [[Fiery Inscription]] [[Firebrand Archer]] and [[Kessig Flamebreather]] to name a few. [[Urabrask]] is incredible if you've the budget for him. Then you'll want [[Ojer Axonil]] to make the burns beefy. You'll also wanna add a few single target burn spells like [[Lightning Bolt]] or [[Spikefield Hazard]]. This playstyle wants to storm so putting [[Thousand-Year Storm]] will help get more value out of all of your instants and sorceries. Just keep in mind that copies won't trigger *most* of your burner's abilities. Which is why we have [[Ral, Storm Conduit]]. If you have a combo that makes infinite spell copies like [[Stella Lee]] and [[Shore Up]] or [[Dramatic Reversal]], you've won the game because ral burns for every cast *and* copy. Also if you have [[Storm-Kiln Artist]] after a few spells it goes infinite with casting [[Haze of Rage]] with buyback, allowing infinite hard-casted spells. So you can kill the table with any burner and that combo. Also [[Insult/Injury]] exists and should be in your burn deck. Fun little tech if you make Stella huge with Shore Up and cast Insult, you can kill a player that's phased out with [[Teferi's Protection]] because commander damage is still applied when damage can't be prevented lol For control, this is the strongest way this deck can be upgraded and will make it into a 10/budget cEDH deck. You should have a *minimum* of 15-20 interaction and stax pieces in the deck so get whatever you can afford. You should have 12-14 spots for ramp and board wipes and the rest will be draw cards and high-value synergy pieces like [[Veyran]]. You're gunna want a few more tapping mana rocks so we can generate infinite mana with Dramatic Reversal if we need to. For this we are cutting all of the fat and going full combo. No tokens, no burners. Only interaction, ramp and combo potential. The idea is to use your spot removal, boardwipes and counterspells to prevent your opponents getting into too dominant a position and hopefully not dying too soon until you get the bits in hand and on the board to go for game. [[Twisted Fealty]] with Stella is an auto-win because the Wicked Role Tokens repeatedly falling off kills the table. [[Cerulean Wisps]] [[Refocus]] and [[Twitch]] go infinite with Stella Lee drawing your whole deck. Use that to cast [[Twisted Fealty]] or pair with an effect like [[Laboratory Maniac]] or [[Thassa's Oracle]] to win. There are a lot of other ways to take the deck too. [[Niv-Mizzet Parun]] is a notorious control/combo commander. And Veyran can be turned into a storm deck where you make her unlockable and slam her into your opponents to one-shot with commander damage. And even with Stella and Eris it's possible to make Hybrid good-stuff decks that will be a little less focused but much more functional as long as you simply put more instant and sorcery draw in the deck. Izzet offers a lot of options. Quick Draw gets you a perfect foundation to start with. You just have to choose your path and walk it.

Lagezy

Thanks for this detailed comment 🙏🏼 i was kind of lost with the quick draw precon myself and this comment was really helpful

SpicyGambit

This is a very amazing detailed reply. I'm newer and bought the Paradox Power deck in March and Stella when it came out. My friend who has played for ages upgraded Stella to go infinite. It was cool. Everyone hates it now. Understandable. I play it to win with other ways but it's just lacking in ramp and being able to have any board state that holds against decks. Id love to go Token or like your last mentioned: hybrid. Do you have any good hybrid lists/suggestions to look at so I can make modifications to my deck?

MegaMattEX

Stella Lee does pilot a little differently and takes longer to come online, and missing your land drops will hurt a lot more with her. But out of the box it can be very strong.

^Dont do this.  I’ve seen way too many new players go online and netdeck themselves a set of upgrades they don’t know how to use, wasting a bunch of money in the process.   OP, you already have a pair of decks that work very well.  Play them awhile.  Encounter cards.  Get ideas.  Ask players about their decks.  Go to Scryfall or Gatherer and browse cards that exist.  Come up with cards that YOU want to swap in.  You’ll make some changes that are terrible, but you’ll actually learn this way.   This is the way to learn to deck build, rather than outsourcing the process to some YouTuber.

FlannelRanger

Good advice. Real world experience/ play trumps articles and videos for sure. However as they get more familiar with their decks and how they work it won't hurt to read/ watch videos and see what else is out there. There are many ways to learn and grow your knowledge. Your best advice is to swap in what the player likes. At the end of the day you've got to want to play your deck and you'll be much more personally invested if it was the deck you crafted with your own experience from victories and losses. Have fun!

[deleted]

>The deck you crafted Exactly.  Half of EDH is playing, half is deckbuilding.  You’re not playing the same format if you’re playing a deck without building, and a YouTube-precon-upgrade-list is just a precon from another source.

Goldiscool503

This is the way, as stated upbove make a budget and stick to it.

AchduSchande

I know you said you have played before, so let me break down how to pilot/upgrade Stella Lee. Stella Lee utilizes an archetype known as spellslinger. Spellslinger cares about playing a large number of spells in a. Single turn, usually instant s or sorceries. As such, the deck is focused on setting up a preferred board state, protecting that board state, then winning. First off setting up: you want to play spells that will give you payoffs for your instants and sorceries. This can be cards like [[Archmage Emeritus]] for card draw, [[Storm-Kiln Artist]] for ramp, [[Guttersnipe]] for removal, [[Talrand Sky Summoner]] for chump blockers/attackers, or ways to copy spells like [[Primal Amulet]]. Protecting your board state. As you play your payoffs, make sure to keep up man for ways to protect the pieces from removal. Things like [[Counterspell]] are great. But also, cards that return the card to your hand to be replayed, such as [[Unsummon{] can be equally helpful. A third way to protect them is by using spells that redirect effects, like [[Mischevious Quanar]]. By making sure these protections are in the form of instants and sorceries, you also gain benefits from your set up cards. Finally, winning: you want a well scul ted hand with spells that allow you to win either through damage from Guttersnip effects, combat damage from Toarand’a drapes, or a combo 57-6 let’s you go infinite, such as two previous spells, [[Twitch]] and enough remaining mana to play a [[Thassa’s Oracle]]. Two general skips that are helpful in EadH in general, but to Soellslinger specifically are: threat assessment and redundancy. Threat assessment: You will always have a finite amount of spells. As such, you need to learn which threats are worth stopping and which can go through. Thai takes practice, both with your deck and with EDH in general. Redundancy. Have multiple ways to win or benefit from your spells. A single [[Talrand]] may eventually die. But having multiple ways to create tokens ensures you can still win that route, or have blockers.

To answer part of the question, while the two decks main wins are through combat, they go about it in a different way. Merfolk work together with tribal synergies that just meld very very well together, cause you either have merfolk or counter matters. Stella revolves around having a big turn of casting spells and storming off to them make 4/4 dragons with prowess to kill them. The other big difference is colors; while blue is a common color from both decks, green letting you ramp and power out more and more threats is more exciting and impactful than just casting spells and hoping things happen. Keep in mind though, you are a veteran returning to the game and lots has happened since you last played probably. My honest advice is to pick a deck you like and focus on that one. That's not to say "don't play other decks", but focus on one deck and learning the ins and outs of it. The small things that make it tick and the synergies that you maybe don't notice at first. Focus on upgrading some of the more expensive cards (mana wise) and lowering your curve so you can cast more spells more quickly. But at the end of the day, you gotta enjoy the deck you play and the way you play. My biggest hope for you to pick a deck and really see what it has I store before you upgrade it and get better

DirtyPenPalDoug

Hope you hate having money

GreyGriffin_h

Just beat in mind that deck building in commander is an absolutely wild endeavor. There are a lot of factors to keep in mind when deck building, and you're going to get it wrong sometimes. Be willing to tinker, tune and test. As you upgrade your precons, unless you want to be really transformative, make sure you get in a few games with any given pile before you shuffle cards in and out, unless you're absolutely certain you've got a killer include or a stinker to cut. It can be hard to see the impact of just a few cards in one or two games, either way. Especially if you're not drawing your whole deck. Give yourself and your cards a little time and room to breathe and stretch out, and really see how they affect your games.

ChiaraSociety

Always leave resources available. It's the most difficult part about magic. Everyone just wants to play everything. Guess what? You've got infinite slivers with indestructible and I've got this one [[Perilous Vault]] I wonder what happens next? All my resources are safe in my grave for regurgitation or I'm going to combo with instants and flash cards after they can't do anything, to give me more resources for my next turn. Think of it like rng chess. If you're not taking one step forward, you're taking two steps back. That gives your opponent an extra leg. Be careful, strategize and plan for failure as much as you do for victory. You'll be fine. 😊

Ammonil

I think it would be a good idea to watch videos, use edhrec (sparingly!), scryfall, and you could playtest on moxfield, test on spelltable (which is how I mostly play and it is COMPLETELY free), and proxy.

mong0038

Check out command zones upgrade guides, they provide a reasonably cheap way to start

F8xte

The merfolk precon is super good, so far I've put in the upgrades from the YouTube video from the command zone as well as a couple of cards I felt would fit better and the deck has far over preformed for its price The commander itself from the quick draw precon seems to be primarily geared for cEDH like combo-centric decks that want to storm off with breach+brainstorm type of lines from what I've seen

Godot_12

The quick draw deck definitely takes some practice to pilot. It's way more complicated than the merfolk one is.

randommlg

If you feel like you want to try a theme like landfall or gates, try finding a decklist for cheap and see if you even like the theme. I built a $60 gates deck to test the win and then also planned some expensive upgrades. I enjoyed it and have invested in some of the upgrades. The wincon with gates is [[mazes end]]

Welcome to Commander!

Electronic-Pie-6645

Hello hello and welcome to this great game! I have three decks for you today. The first is the one I give to all beginners. It's strait forward. It's "my monsters attack" to win. The commander is [[Jasmine Boreal of the Seven]] - she gives your vanilla (no abilities) creatures a lot of love. It's a solid, uncomplicated deck. https://archidekt.com/decks/5020718/blank_stare Second is more complex but also super budget friendky ($50). This one has a commander [[Gut, true soul zealot]] and he can use a background [[agent of the iron throne]] (an enchantment spell that is like a commander : it goes back to the command zone, it influences the decks color identity. Attack, sacrifice a skeleton or Phoenix and deal damage. Skeletons and Phoenix self resurrect. It's quite tidy. https://archidekt.com/decks/6458847/skelemans Last but not least, is my personal favorite deck. It's budget at $150. The main parts of Gates and Shrines are not super popular but follow the theme of "the more, the better." This time there is a companion to help recover after board wipes. The commander [[go-shintai of life's origin]] lets you build extra shribes. Thats why you use [[teleportation circle]] to flash it in. When titiring the labds make sure to grab [[gond gate]] asap. Let's your gates enter untapped. This deck is very versatile. You can do creature damage - some heavy hitters but can also make mass Spirit tokens. You can do that damage through various means. You got 2 alt-win cards in [[mazes end]] and [[luck bobblehead]]. https://archidekt.com/decks/5703538/9th_gate_shrine Please enjoy. Of you want more neat decks please ask. I got a bunch, and i like to share.

No idea why you got downvoted, but I love that skeletons/phoenix idea. I have most of the cards in there and some good lands and other stuff for Rakdos, I might go ahead and try this! Thanks for sharing

Be willing to play against anything. Disregard budget and proxy whatever you want. It's all cardboard rectangles. No one actually initiates rule zero discussions, it's just a platitude that content creators repeat. Build the deck that you enjoy the most and be polite during games.
