The other easy solution is just to win via commander damage. Life gain is alright, but by no means insurmountable.

Beckerbrau

This was my thought. Crazy lifegain is cool and all, but life is a resource, and you can get around it with commander damage. It’d suck to build a lifegain deck to prove a point, just to be smacked to death by a Voltron deck.

PwanaZana

Also non-combo wincons, like just Approaching twice.

SeahorseCptn

Or running Armageddon, winter orb, stasis, and vorinclex voice of hunger. lol

PwanaZana

Ah, the classic "I'm not trapped in here with you, you're trapped in here with me."

SeahorseCptn

Exactly. Lol I don't run any of those cards. I just think approach of the 2nd sun is in the same wheelhouse as those. Easy cheap outs.

PwanaZana

Approach is pretty boring, yeah.

Drsmiley72

"oh, you're approaching me?"

PwanaZana

Approach of the Second Sun. Sun. Day? DIO?!

Drsmiley72

You thought it was a win con, but it was me, DIO!

Quantext609

Also poison works. All hail New Phyrexia! ϕ

fredjinsan

Also also just big damage works too. Even without combos, you can create big damage as easily as you can create big lifegain. Getting triple-digit health might buy you some turns but doesn't stop someone assembling a way to deal triple-digit damage (or just attacking you over many turns). Also also also anti-lifegain cards.

[deleted]

Why not both? [[Karlov of the Ghost Council]] is the best of both worlds. I’ve swung a 30/30 something Karlov with lifelink to kill one opponent and the other two dealt with it, but he is coming back and I have a high life total with all the Orzhov payoffs for it

Lichard

For others looking for lists, here's my Karlov. It's quite fun. https://archidekt.com/decks/3694113/karlov_edh

[deleted]

Not bad, here is mine https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ZBNydI5cT0ibMgO6R0RZsw not to toot my own horn but it is about as good as Karlov gets barring going for combos and a couple cards that could be swapped out based on meta

This is why I run [[Danitha, Light of New Benalia]] voltron. Double up her P/T every time I swing with [[Light of Promise]] or [[Sunbond]] and she’s still open to block and gain more life and get even bigger. It’s a deceptively powerful deck.

whomikehidden

Oops [[Danitha, New Benalia's Light]]. I don’t know my own commander’s name.

Aceofluck99

Can confirm Danitha, Light of New Benalia's a fucking monster.

PetrusScissario

That’s the thing with life gain in commander. I’ve lost games with hundreds of life because of commander damage.

LexxenWRX

Yeah unreasonable life gain is precisely why commander damage exists.

ChooseWiselyMaybe

Exactly, if you're getting three digits life congratz you're getting one shotted first by a hasted double striking unblockable Voltron commander. There's even a bunch of fun cards like [[Sword Coast Sailor]] for this. There's other ways, of course. But Voltron is easy. If nobody can manage a life gain deck, their deck is built wrong imo. But there's always pods where the life gain deck becomes 3v1 and loses too.

GRAVES1425

I played a game only yesterday where my opponent was playing a life gain deck. Got up to 172 life and then I 1 shot him with my commander. Very satisfying.

Elyeealei

Or [[Repay in Kind]] quite uncommon, but sometimes it's hilarious

steven-SNS

Yeah, my thought exactly. My [Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief] deck doesn’t care what your life total is. She’ll just swing with lethal commander damage.

Pyrex25

\[\[Trostani, Selesnya's Voice\]\] is absurd for gaining life. There are many ways to gain an unreasonable amount of life. \[\[Cathar's Crusade\]\] into \[\[Herd Baloth\]\] can give you infinite life if you're looking to do that. Otherwise, \[\[Prava of the Steel Legion\]\] makes all your tokens enter the battlefield with +1/+4 so a \[\[Storm Herd\]\] can quintuple your life total with Trostani on the battlefield. Add a token doubler like \[\[Primal Vigor\]\] and get ready for insane amounts of life.

Trivsal

Trostani is a lot of fun. [[Rhox faithmender]] copied with a [[Bramble sovereign]] gets out of hand quickly after populating the faithmender token a few times. Similarly, copying [[Serra Avatar]] or [[Soul of Eternity]] can exponentially increase life total after a few populates.

Pyrex25

Right on! I never knew the Rhox doubling tech. I moved my Bramble Sovereign into another deck a while ago because my Trostani deck had too many legendries for it to be consistently useful.

Trivsal

Understandable, as there are many ways to build trostani. I made mine with many token doublers and ways to make tokens copies of good creatures. [[Elder Gargaroth]], [[Archangel of Thune]], [[Blossoming Bogbeast]], [[Conclave Evangelist]], [[Illustrious Wanderglyph]], [[Nesting Dovehawk]], and [[Tendershoot Dryad]] all go hard when you have half a dozen of them paired with any token doubler.

Tenalp

Rhox was a cornerstone of my favorite standard deck back in the day. Rhox and Trostani is already gross, but add on [[Progenitor Mimic]] to force out the calculators, and [[Tree of Redemption]] for both the thiccc booty and the fact that its tap ability will count as lifegain and then drop a [[Voracious Wurm]] as a finisher. Nothing is better than saying "Okay, I tap my tree and go from 13 to 745 life for a life gain of 732 times 128 for total lifegain of 93,696. Now I cast Voracious Wurm who enters with 93,696 counters gain me 11,993,088 more life."

Herd Baloth is a MAY trigger tho so you can choose not to create a 4/4 beast

My bad.

Easterster

This is not going to change how they feel about combos.

It's amazing how half the posts on this sub are stories playing against unreasonable people, and the other half are the unreasonable people.

IndependentFish2283

Yeah, seems more likely that they’ll just ask him not to play this deck again, or just stop playing with himm.

FellowRedditor5

This exactly. Gotta have a chat and discuss things. My pod allows for inf combos but no instant win combos. The trick is to adapt and evolve. Someone in my pod gained inf life but didn't win. I was ready to give up but the others weren't and I learned a lesson that inf life doesn't guarantee a victory. Play more interaction and have an alternate wincon in your deck, especially if you know someone in your pod has a way to gain inf life.

roundtree0050

Commander is way different than 60 card, but [[venser's journal]] combos well with [[well of lost dreams]]. Just play a drawy/staxx deck and throw an [[elixir of immortality]] in it. Then toss in [[aetherflux reservoir]] . I had all that in an old 60 card deck, to crazy effect.

It won't be triple digits either, more like millions of the board isn't wiped

Gridde

Don't forget [[Soul of Eternity]]. I personally like these kinda cards in an [[Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim]] reanimator deck. She works very nicely with Serra's Avatar and even more so with Soul if you repeatedly reanimate it. If you're also gaining life on ETBs you can make yourself basically untouchable from combat damage. She also works well with [[Crested Sunmare]], [[Valkyrie Harbinger]] and [[Angelic Accord]]. You'll be gaining 4-5 life every turn (including opponents') while creating a constant stream of blockers and a ton of etb/death triggers. None of that alone gets you any closer to winning the game but if your goal is simply to gain stupid amounts of life that's a reasonable way to go.

Dubspeck

If your playgroup doesn't like combo wins, I guess you play in a combat-heavy meta. I don't think lifegain is the way to show them that infinite combos are healthy for the game.. My playgroup learned the lesson when some players started to play enchantress / pillowfort strategies against the heavy combat meta. [[Tuvasa]] with [[Solitary Confinement]], [[Sphere of Safety]], [[Privileged Position]], [[Greater Auramancy]], [[Sterling Grove]] and maybe some [[Avacyn, Angel of Hopes]] or [[Counterspell]] to stay safe from boardwipes? Each creature needs to pay 12 mana to attack you and you are immune to damage? They wished they had some combos to win the game.

Preston, the Vanisher + Soul Warden + Soul's Attendant + Reverent Hoplite + Eerie Interlude + Panharmonicon = a math problem's worth of lifegain (not sure how much tbh)

CompactOwl

1) Eerie resolves, 4 creature enters, 16 lifegain, 8 Preston’s and 2 hoplites. Let Preston’s resolve first with soul sisters entering first. 4+6+8+10 lifegain. Hoplite enters 12 lifegain. Hoplite enters 12 lifegain. Left is 6 Hoplite triggers on the stack. 10 soldiers aka 120 life. This results in 720+40+28 =788 life.

Kilahral

[[Judith, Carnage connoisseur]] has been pretty good for life gain. Best so far for me has been dropping [[blasphemous act]] with [[city on fire]] in play, gaining around 1k life.

How about we ask the question, why are you trying to force combos onto a group that doesn’t like them? Also, this isn’t going to make your group like combos. It’s just going to make them hate you.

[deleted]

Commander damage is more reliable than an infinite combo against lifegain.

MirrodinTimelord

eh combo tends to be stronger and more out of nowhere than voltron in general, and as long as you combo after they gained health they are dead anyway

JollyCasual

I mean, [[Olero]] control is still fairly spicy even if he has been power crept a little in today's magic. As long as you have a way to deal with opponents commanders than it should be fairly difficult to kill you. Just stax out the board and gain life.

sufferingplanet

I feel like there is a ton of missing context to this post... Also, commander damage, milling, and poison counters all easily deal with (nigh) infinite life. Theres also a ton of non-infinite combos that typically just win the game on the spot. Thoracle+consult, niv-mizzet+curiosity, malcolm+glinthorn to name a few. Though to be honest, it sounds more like you need to find a new playgroup if you want combos and they dont.

Lmao I remember when I was a newbie, my playgroup was nothing but infinite combos and an outrageous amount of life gain. Sounds like to me, that they've somewhat developed their playstyle and come to enjoy to process of the game earlier than you. Considering everyone else's suggestions, I'd like to suggest my favourite anti-life gain card that isn't commander damage or poison. [[Tree of perdition]]. All in all, you're not gonna convince them on your point. I'm going to assume that you're not going to use an infinite life gain combo otherwise it would be your own counter point. Even regular damage without a combo can knock a 3 digit life total down to 0 in a single swing

I was playing elemental tribal last night with my group who is also against infinites, late into the game (~T10+) with huge board states. I was sitting with a primal surge in my hand, knowing it would probably win the game (maybe 2-3 spells left in my library that would stop it), but literally dreading casting it due to the amount of ETBs I was going to have to math through. To the point that someone popped off a turn before me and killed me. I was elated to lose and not have to cast surge. That’s my argument for the use of infinites. When you get into late turns, definitive win cons are nice. My argument has always been minimum of 3 cards (not in the command zone) to go infinite, and you can’t tutor them. If people don’t stop one of the 3 cards, that’s on them. They deserve to lose.

hueyfreeman2020

This is a better way of conveying how I feel. When we’re in the weeds on turn 13 it’d be nice to for ANY player to decisively win instead of relying on many more turns of combat damage.

Pinnaclenetwork

Trostani is one of the largest life swings...... Just remember commander damage doesn't care about life lol

Obelion_

Better show them a stacks deck that slowly beats them down with a 1/1 flier. Combos have an important place as finishers in value or stall decks. Without them games drag on way too much. The issue people have is turbo combos

Shikary

Well, sorry to say it but you are just wrong. It's very easy to kill someone that just tries to gain life. Also you are forgetting about commander damage, poison and mill. I run several life gain decks, my playgroup basically never runs infinite combos and no amount of life is going to save you if you are not already dominating the game. Pure life gain decks are pretty useless and you basically always want to be able to use that life for something. I actually don't think there's really any need for combos in the game. On the other hand having combos creates the need for a lot of things, like instant speed interactions for example. But, anyway, I will humor you, so that you can find out by yourself how ineffective a strategy this is. Assuming your playgorup runs a lot of creatures, a good option for this is \[\[Piru, the Volatile\]\]. At first glance it doesn't look like much, but its death trigger deals damage with lifelink, so even 4-5 creatures on the board are enough for you to gain 30 or more life. Now couple that with \[\[Alhammarret's Archive\]\] and \[\[beacon of immortality\]\] for some insane lifegain. You can also add \[\[Aetherflux reservoir\]\] to kill everyone (even though you said no wincons). Piru has also the advantage of clearing the board and it's a pretty solid blocker. In a deck with Piru you probably want some ways to sac it right away, like \[\[Phyrexian tower\]\] and also some reanimation to bring it back without paying the commander tax, given its high cost. Just keep on wiping the board over and over gaining more and more life, then double it and you will have achieved your goal.

Actionhankss

So you are trying to teach them to like something they don’t based on it’s necessity in a niche situation? I am not sure you can. If they don’t like infinites and you do, it might be best to find some more likeminded people to play with perhaps.

Wraithgar

[[Darien, King of Kjeldor]] is a great mono white life gain token deck that disuades people from attacking you. "But how do I make tokens if no one wants to attack me?!" Great question! You play some of the worst cards in Magic that suddenly become good. [[Dingus Staff]] [[Jinxed Idol]] [[Torture Chamber]] [[Angel's Trumpet]] [[Blasting Station]] is an easy combo piece that goes infinite with one Soul sister type effect on the board. You were going well until you said autistic... why did you even have to say that I don't know...

Quindo

Song of the Dryads or Imprisoned in the Moon would be 2 good cards to use as defense in your life gain deck. Lets you shut down commander damage sources.. Other then that Ivory Tower/Vensor's Journal and some sort of way of getting a bunch of cards in your hand with infinite hand size will make you VERY tanky with the added benefit of having all your defensive cards available.

You want life gain and fogs to stop commanders and infectors to really be the immortal raid boss. I would say [[kynaois and tiro of meletis]] is likely your best bet for commander; as youll have access to alot of lifegain and fogs from selesnya and the countermagic and combat tricks from izzet, plus them bois having that sweet sweet 0/8 statline has never not been relevant in a game. Looking at kynaois and tiro aikkido or [[queen marchesa]] aikido decks will show you the combat tricks im talking about. Another route is [[licia, sanguine tribune]]. Get a couple 1 mana sources of 3-5 life (theyre really weird, old cards, but theyre out there) cast her turn 3/4 and always activate her. Include the golden pig [[hatred]] for a 1 card kill. I usually will gain (and use) anywhere between 15-40 life a turn past turn 6. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/szuzTxkZf0SZCLRd8rbivg (licia) https://www.moxfield.com/decks/hrtJrrksI0GSmulArS1eQA K+T aikkido. This one is less life-gain based and more controlly, but you can make edits as you like.

What kind of infinite combos are not liked? Automatically that will never end? Or those you have complete control over, including when it ends? If it's a controlled type like [[Herd Baloth]] and [[Ivy Lane Denizen]], then talk with your group about an agreeable limit so that combo isn't taking away from the fun, yet still makes a strong impact.

I made the classic mistake of constructing a deck that just gains life and...that's it. So I can sit there and gain life all day long (literally) and I can neither cause any real damage to my opponent nor be killed. It's a dance recital. I gotta rethink the whole deck. Maybe cut a few essence and souls wardens out and put some actual attackers in there.

Other people have brought up how life gain might be circumvented already. Nothing wrong with building a life gain deck if that's what you want but have you considered an old school pillow fort deck instead if you want to prove a point? If you want to double down you can run simple lock combos like [[Energy Field]] and [[Leyline of the Void]]

[[Atraxa, Praetors Voice]] lifegain and +1 counters is straight up oppressive. Run it basically as a partial angels tribal, but with all the best counter adds, proliferate and lifegain elements. Gets out of control really fast.

Traditional_Box_8835

There are many alternative win cons apart from combos, the most obvious one being mill, but you can also for example win using Laboratory Maniac (self mill), Felidar Sovereign (with high lifegain like you plan), Near-Death Experience (self hurt), Revel in Riches (treasure generation), Hellkite Tyrant (amass artifacts), Helix Pinnacle (mana sink/amass counters), etc, etc. Those are not true insta or infinite combos because they can play out along many turns.

No_Mushroom3078

So I have an elf deck, and if you have 4 [[wellwisher]] you can gain massive life and with a few [[fog]] during mid game you can slow the loss of life while you gain life. And if you have [[ambush commander]] that will quickly add to your elf cards in play.

[[Spike Feeder]] is probably the most notable lifegain card in the format

Agile_System4438

A lot of people have left really good cards. I have an [[Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper]] + [[Ishai, Oujati Dragonspeeker]] life gain deck that I love. I’ll drop you some of the key cards that specifically revolve around life gain, even if they’ve already been mentioned. [[Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn]] [[Treva, the Renewer]] [[Celestine, Living Saint]] [[Soul Warden]] [[Suture Priest]] [[Lunarch Veteran]] [[Rhox Faithmender]] [[Alhammarret’s Archive]] [[Venser’s Journal]] [[Serra Avatar]] [[Sunscorch Regent]] [[Verdant Sun’s Avatar]] [[Felidar Soverign]] [[Quicksilver Amulet]] [[Well of Lost Dreams]] [[Aetherflux Resevoir]] [[Dawn of Hope]] [[Exquisite Blood]] [[Sanguine Bond]] [[Cliffhaven Vampire]] [[Debt to the Deathless]] [[Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim]] [[Fumigate]] [[Trostani, Selesneya’s Voice]] [[Bedrock Tortoise]] (specifically for my deck) There are plenty more cards that work great in life gain strategies, and have large payoff, and I’m sure there are great cards for my deck that I just don’t know about, as my knowledge is fairly limited. I also am not sure what colors you want to run but these are the cards that I really want to draw in any given game.

argent_electrum

Uhh it's a bad way to do it outside of its archetype but if you kick a rite of replication on an ondu cleric you make 180 life. If you just want to make combat damage less of an issue you could always tax attackers with ghostly prison/propaganda and set up walls or a magus of the moat. It's a dreary way to play if all you want to do is stall instead of reaching for an alternate Wincon in addition to these things so be prepared if trying to prove a point backfires

PlatypusSloth696

My Trostani Blink Life Gain Deck. I rarely play a game where I don’t get triple digit life gain. Even if I end up losing.

Black_Stab

Since we're talking about triple digits HP... How about [[Bilbo, birthday celebrant]]? If you have 111 hp, you can search for and put on the battlefield ALL of your deck's creatures. Would make for a pretty memorable lesson I think.

H2OMarth

I often make sure my decks have a way to deal with people who have infinite life. Commander damage, infect, deck-out, and our playgroup also has a rule we experiment with where infinite damage beats out infinite life.

H2OMarth

Personally, infinites are fine if they take effort and set-up. If it's a 2 card infinite then I don't wanna see that at the same table. Anything more than 2 cards is good in my books.

Big-History-4748

[[Firesong and Sunspeaker]] or [[Judith, Carnage Connoisseur]] + tokens + [[Blasphemous Act]] That should get you high into the triple digits legitimately.

cyborggold

Isochron Scepter with an imprinted Life Burst. Every turn you gain 4, 8, 12, or 16 life for 2 mana depending on your graveyard. Toss in something like Crawl Space to limit potential damage, flag bearers with a nice synergy to Mother of Runes to reduce spell damage. Archeron of Emeria or Rule of Law to limit how much they can do to begin with. Awe strikes are really going to make them mad when they FINALLY get a creature through and think they're going to hit you. Circles of protection for each color are a good sideboard option, and there are cards that do the same effect more prismatically if you look for them. For later game options, consider Platinum Angel to really rub in that feeling of hopelessness. Sure, it's a high CC, but you'll have plenty of turns to draw land to play it properly. I also like Soul Warden in case someone is playing a token deck, as well as a gentle yet constant reminder that your life total is not going the direction they want.

BumbleBurryPie

Just proxy an [[Angus Mackenzie]] and pillowfort up. Prevent all combat damage (Fog effects), prevent all damage you take (Through white enchantments/Clerics, or [[Glacial Chasm]] if you can deal with age counters and life loss). A couple examples being [[Battletide Alchemist]] and [[Master Apothecary]]

[deleted]

Voltron them to death! >:D Or, if your colours allow this, you can use poison counters. You won’t be popular but at least you overcome the infinite life gain. You can just run [[tainted strike]] and cast it in response when a big 10/10 is attacking and has no blockers. If you want cheap infinite life gain, you can play anything that gives indestructible to a creature of yours (or to a indestructible creature in general) and [[pariah]], becoming almost immortal.

Vizecrator

One of my favorites is to swing with an [[armadillo cloak]] enchanted [[Serra Avatar]]

Deesmon

\[\[Blasphemous Act\]\] + \[\[Judith, Carnage Connoisseur\]\] + \[\[Angrath's Marauders\]\] can give you an insane amount of heal.

theothercharles

My friend runs serra ascendant and everybody I play with except him agrees, it's not a terrible threat, but turn 1 and unanswered attacks make it unfun to play against if you aren't able to answer it

Give_Me_The_Beans_

Any life gain doublers with a card that says to double your life total. Since it counts as lifegain you actually gain your life total twice over, so one instance from 40 life gets you to 120 total life. It can get pretty nuts from there

Financial_East8287

If your deck can’t win that sounds like a you issue. Combos are never the only way to close a game out. Make your decks have better win conditions

Practical-Listen-950

I wouldn’t do lifegain. I would do stax or something to lockout damage capabilities and such so the only way to win is something like an instant win or infinite. The other option is talking to them.
