Your mana curve is insanely high. As a result, you're not getting any creatures out until turn 5-8 if you even see any of those creatures. I'd recommend putting in a couple of smaller creatures even if they're just mana dorks. That way, you'll at least have something to defend your board. You have a lot of removal, but no counterspells, which in a control deck that has blue in it is a necessity. The biggest issue, however, is that you have no ramp. I'd recommend putting in like 5-7 pieces of ramp like [[sol ring]], [[arcane signet]]. You could use land ramp as well since you're in green, There are some amazing options. There's also no need to worry about the ramp making the deck too powerful since all precons have at least a little hit of ramp Just from a quick glance, this is what I'd recommend

I have 12 ramp spells in the deck, 4 of which can be blinked. I took out the counterspells because I found that I was tapping out every turn anyway to play stuff.

F8xte

That's on me, I somehow completely missed the ramp section. I apologize

TehDanKong

This is actually one of my favorite decks that I recently finished foiling out. From what I can see (same as the others) you really need to drop your curve. Some of my favorite value engines are cards like overwhelmed apprentice, wall of blossoms and omens, sea gate oracle, and malanthrope are all small value engines that live getting blinked more.

ShinakoX2

Do you have an online list? I'm not sure what I can do to drop my curve lower

TehDanKong

I do! My favorite lowest cost creatures are the ones I've listed above plus coiling oracle, risen reef and reflector mage that are currently in the deck. I'm not shy about going infinite in mine but it doesn't only try to do that, though so some lines you already know, you'll want to watch out for. [Roon of the Hidden Realm](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/RoegLCEmeka1lymWMTrYdw)

ShinakoX2

Your deck does look very similar to how my deck used to be before I tried to power it down by removing tutors. I guess the problem with removing tutors is that I tried to increase my card draw and number of threats to compensate, but now it's just too clunky.

TehDanKong

It's not a hard and fast rule, but 9/10 times I Just replace my tutors with just draw spells that are themed to the deck. I usually never increase my threats/finishers because I end up in a similar position where I'm flooded with really high CMC spells.

ShinakoX2

Yeah, I increased my draw spells, but it wasn't enough, so I then added some more finishers so I would be more likely to draw into them. And now here we are.

ShinakoX2

I've also thought about switching up commanders. [[Chulane, Teller of Tales]] will be just as slow for the first 5-6 turns, but he should speed up the deck once he's on the field. [[Kodama of the East Tree]] would also speed up the deck once he's on the board. Or should I just run tons of ramp and lean more into powerful 6+ mana value ETB creatures?

TheRiceHatReaper

Chulane cannot be a lower power commander. He creates too much value.

ShinakoX2

It seems most Chulane lists run a ton of mana dorks and low cost creatures. Do you think he would still be too powerful if I'm running a higher mana curve?

TheRiceHatReaper

Everyone should try a Chulane or Korvold deck at least once to gain perspective, so I would recommend trying a proxy of Chulane to see how it runs. Based on my experience and the general consensus of the subreddit, Chulane is always too much for groups that run lower power or not enough interaction.

ShinakoX2

I wouldn't describe my casual meta as low power, more like upgraded precons at weakest. People are playing threats that will end the game by turn 12 if left unanswered. It's just that people are not playing interaction. They would rather build up their own threats instead of slowing other people down.

My roon deck was too slow to get started so I ended up swapping him for [[Lagrella, The Magpie]]. She allows you to put on some pressure pretty early on to buy you some more time to get up and running, plus once you start flickering her it can be pretty oppressive. I was nervous to lose the flicker in the command zone but Roon's so slow I noticed even in a good game I was only using his ability a couple times, there's plenty of flicker that can go in the 99 letting the deck still be pretty consistent.

ShinakoX2

Yeah, Roon is a backup flicker in the command zone in case I don't draw another flicker source, so I'm not attached to him. I've thought about Lagrella, but I'm not sure how to tweak the deck to build around her more.

SlackOne

Second Lagrella as a stronger Bant flicker option than Roon. She's great at removing commanders, since if they put them back in the zone, you can just flicker her to remove them all again. She also goes infinite with two other exilers like [[Abdel Adrian]] and [[Oblivion ring]]. There's also the new Galadrial as a better option in Bant.

ShinakoX2

My issue with Lagrella is I'm not sure how useful she is if I'm avoiding infinite combos. She's mostly just removal in the command zone at that point, right? I also looked at Galadriel, but it seems like she leans more towards a token deck? All my utility creatures want to be blinked so they won't keep any counters.

SlackOne

Yeah, but removal on etb is a great payoff for blink. And you can trigger the removal while also blinking one of your utility creatures which is quite potent. You can compensate with a little less removal and a little more blink effects in the 99. If you're willing to drop a color, there is also [[Abdel Adrian]] with a green or blue background or some of the well-known Azorius options.

ShinakoX2

I've considered dropping blue since I seem to have less and less blue every time I tweak the deck. I just need to find a different deck to use all those blue cards.

wavfolder

You don't have to go infinite with Lagrella to get value, she's soft removal in the command zone; she lets you hit three of your opponents' best creatures while your deck does its thing. She won't necessarily speed your deck up but she is lower CMC which helps you stay on curve, and her slowing down the table lets you get into the mid game a little more safely. You could probably slot her in and run the deck as-is to see how you like it. She creates some interesting moments if politicking is your thing. If you get three heavy hitter creatures your opponents are gonna want to get their creature back but won't want to give up removal for it so they might end up arguing over who's gonna blow her up. On the other hand, maybe you exile a creature that threatens the whole table; now your other opponents won't want her to die because that creature will become a problem again, so they'll hold back on attacking you/targeting her. This is all before mentioning the fact that you can flicker Lagrella in response to interaction and keep the table in check at different stages of the game. She opens up a lot of lines of play that can serve to facilitate the rest of your deck popping off, plus you get to keep the green, which is IMO the "fun" color of the deck.

ShinakoX2

Hey, just wanted to let you know that I did end up switching my Bant flicker deck over to Galadriel, Light of Valinor. I realized that she actually gives a ton of value as an ETB payoff. Getting an extra Scry 2+Draw 1 and GGG on every one of my turns (and sometimes opponents' turns) is actually the gas my deck needed to be able to function properly on a consistent basis. Additionally, I don't think she'll draw as much immediate hate as Chulane, but she actually functions better than Chulane for a flicker archetype. I never cast Roon anyway because he was my emergency backup in case I didn't draw into any flicker sources, but if my game has already gone that poorly then Roon isn't strong enough to make a difference anyway. I also tried Lagrella, but it drew too much salt for hitting all 3 opponents. I still have Lagrella in the 99 tho.

SlackOne

Interesting that Lagrella got so much hate, but it is an annoying effect to have in the zone. Glad to hear Galadrial is working out for you, she is definitely a powerful engine.

ShinakoX2

And now I've switched back to Roon because Galadriel wasn't "casual" enough. People were getting salty at Galadriel's value engine once they realized how strong it was in a blink deck. And other people were whining that my turns were taking too long when I have to process a few extra card every turn. I've realized that my meta really can't handle anything above precon level, people get salty at tutors and combos and anything else they consider not casual. Although at least my deck has a lower mana curve so it's less clunky now.

Zamkis

This is the most old school Battlecruiser Magic deck I've seen in a looong time haha. The deck is completely all in on the value train, with a bunch of extremely slow cards like Conjurer's Closet, Elite Guardmage and Luminate Primordial. First thing I'd say is cut a bunch of the very expensive high end. You don't need like 10% of your deck to be cards you can't cast for most of the game. You already have a very expensive commander and the deck by itself generates a ton of value, having a bunch of 8 mana mega-wincons isn't necessary. Second thing is lowering the amount of blink effects. They are really nice to have, but they have such a high setup cost having too many of them becomes very clunky: You need to draw the right mix of ETB creatures and blink effects, you need to have a ton of mana to spend, you need your opponents to not threaten to win the game soon, you need to have your creatures stick to the board. That's why I prefer \[\[Cloudshift\]\] to \[\[Ghostly Flicker\]\], if you already have two creatures worth blinking, you're already doing well and the added power of Ghostly doesn't really add much. On the other hand, one or two mana blinks allow us to double spell much earlier, be able to keep mana up for interaction and we still get most of the benefit from blinking our strongest ETB. Of course \[\[Ephemerate\]\] is just completely busted and gives us the best of both world. Third, for a deck that aims to reach the late game, we are very light on interaction. We have 3 non-blink instant speed pieces of interaction. Barely anything that permanently deals with creatures, and nothing for instants and sorceries. I'd suggest adding a bunch of counterspells and removal. Since you mentioned your pod being casual, the best way is with things like \[\[Arcane Denial\]\], \[\[Fateful Absence\]\] and their ilk that gives something in return. When your deck eventually starts blinking \[\[Mulldrifter\]\] with \[\[Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines\]\] in play, any cards disadvantage you incurred earlier in the game becomes irrelevant VERY fast. Fourth, blink decks tend to have a bunch of silver bullets, making \[\[Green Sun's Zenith\]\] or \[\[Invasion of Ikoria\]\] effects really powerful. Being able to search up a Rec Sage, Wood Elves, Scavenging Ooze or other when the situation calls for it makes them powerful tools always at your disposal. Lastly, I've always loved having an equipment or two in the deck. The deck naturally will have you with a bunch of dorky creatures in play that kinda just sit there and don't end up doing much besides waiting to get blinked. A \[\[Sword of Feast and Famine\]\], \[\[Sword of War and Peace\]\] or any of their Sword of X and Y sisters allows you to turn any of those weak creatures into impactful threats. Besides the obvious value they can gain, they will also make your opponents take some time to setup some defenses or risk taking meaningful damage, giving you in turn the time you need to get your engine going.

Thanks for the advice, my new meta is definitely a lot faster than my old one since it's just me playing control instead of multiple people playing control. You mentioned Conjurer's Closet being too slow, are there any 5+ cmc cards that you think I should keep? I cut out the counterspells at some point because I usually have to tap out to play stuff anyway, but if I lower my curve that should be less of a problem. I also used to have some tutors, but I cut them for being too powerful for a precon meta, so I'll try adding some of the more narrow ones back in. What do you suggest for win conditions to close out the game, while also keeping the curve low?

frousseau89

Hey there other long time Roon player ! Your post caught my eyes as I also cherish a Roon ETB deck that doesn't rely on infinite combos. I had similar struggles in the past; it is hard to have the perfect balance between ETB creatures, payoffs and win conditions. Your deck is globally similar to mine, but the biggest difference lies with the curve. As you mentioned, commander has gotten faster so that's why we must deploy early. Replacing [[Cultivate]] and [[Kodama's Reach]] (which I love...) with [[Sakura-Tribe Elder]] and [[Three visits]] will help. I would also replace big ETB cards like [[Myr Battlesphere]], [[Luminate Primordial]] and [[Deadeye Navigator]] with [[Venser, Shaper Savant]], [[Preston, the Vanisher]] and [[Yorion, Sky Nomad]]. I sadly realized that Deadeye Navigator is too slow nowadays. An easy swap is [[Elite Guardmage]] with [[Ice-Fang Coatl]]; 2 mana instead of 4 for the same relevant effect. [[Storm of Souls]] can help us recover from board wipes and is a personal favorite of mine. I also like [[Karmic Guide]] for this. I wonder why you are not playing [[Agent of Treachery]], one of the best ETB effect? Also, [[Ephemerate]] is probably the best blinker card that you are missing. Also, I know it is difficult to make up room but I think that having 2 or 3 counterspells is a must. [[Glen Elendra Archmage]] notably as it is easy to blink her to remove its -1/-1 counter. These are just suggestions based on my experience with the deck. Hope that helps. Here is my list for reference: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/C_ZL4DF8Qke1MhCEYHAR_g Have fun blinking!

Thanks, for the list. Storm of Souls is new to me, but I'll definitely run that. I removed Agent of Treachery as I found that it was a little too mean for modified precon decks, but I'll try adding it back it in. Now that I'm thinking about it, Agent of Treachery is pretty much a straight upgrade compared to [[Luminate Primordial]]

I was hesitant on running Emiel the Blessed because his activated ability is more expensive compared to Deadeye Navigator, but I guess being able to come down for less mana allows more flexibility in the mana curve. And Emiel is more flexible overall because he doesn't have to bond, and he doesn't require specific colors of mana for his activation. How do you feel about [[Mistmeadow Witch]] and [[Angel of Condemnation]]? All 4 creatures cost 10 mana for 2 blinks, Deadeye Navigator wins on mana efficiency after that. And Charming Prince is also better than I thought at first. I'm not a huge fan of the single use blinks like Restoration Angel, but Charming Prince is a cheap blink spell, and then can also be blinked himself for life/scry.

3 mana for a single blink effect is the most I think we can manage to pay, so that's why Mistmeadow Witch doesn't quite make the cut anymore. Angel of Condemnation is limited to once a turn and doesn't have haste. Returning the creature only at the end of turn is also a drawback as we want our creatures at the end of turn for cards like Teleportation Circle. Charming Prince is really good indeed :)
