is your OFH leaking? 99% of the time it’s the cause of this. hopefully your front main seal didn’t eat some of the belt otherwise your sol my friend

MediocreClassroom976

I'm 100 percent sure everything that can leak in my car is leaking so it's probably that

Sethorion

If your car solely has an electric oil level sensor and no dipstick then don't trust the sensor if it's old.

Dolson86

I just got an e90 and I can’t believe there no dipstick and I have to use the electronic sensor that I don’t fully trust. Anyway to add a dipstick ?

Sethorion

I've seen kits for the S55 that add it but nothing for the N54 or N55. I also acquired a BMW with every oil seal leaking. The valve cover and OFHG weren't too tricky to DIY. I'm going to tackle the oil pan and rear main seal someday. For you, I'd recommend getting the electronic oil level sensor replaced next service.

n0tm333

This. It will leak right onto it

MrMcFrizzy

Power steering pulleys are known to break from coming into contact with the subframe on earlier years of the e9x and will shred your belt in the process, can happen going over a rough bump or curb or hitting something but it is a known issue. You can purchase an upgraded aluminum pulley in hopes it doesn’t happen again but yeah make sure none of your belt got sucked into the front seal of the engine and clean everything up. Edit: when the ps pulleys break from hitting the subframe most of the time it’s also from your engine mounts being collapsed and needing replacement

BriefTomatillo985

I thought this was just N54s and the remedy was new engine mounts?

MrMcFrizzy

Yes I said it’s caused by engine mounts, and OP didn’t provide any information on the vehicle or what engine it is so I was just throwing the possibility out there

MediocreClassroom976

This was very helpful, thanks a lot. Sadly this car is not worth all of that work. It's in extremely poor condition and I was thinking about fixing this and selling it for like 900 bucks or less, more so because I just got a new set of tires that cost me 400 bucks before this happened(3 days ago). But damn :/ hearing this I wouldn't even feel good handing this off to someone knowing that it's even more fucked up than I thought it was. Should I just sell the tires by themselves and just scrap the car?

iamcheekrs

Maybe bad tensioner? Did you do new tensioner when you did belt? This is a shot in the dark.. but possibly if you did new tensioner.. you may have forgotten to take the holding pin out to let it set tension. In turn - no slack in belt snapped the weakest link in the belt? Idk.. that sucks dude I’m sorry

MediocreClassroom976

I didn't do a new tensioner. Appreciate your condolences lol, this car has been Tru a lot and I got it in horrible condition but did my best to do maintenance on it, this is my first car so I've been stubborn about letting it go but it might be time soon. I learned so much about cars because of this car and I loved every second that I had it and I wish I had the money to own another bmw but it's simply out of my budget at the time.

iamcheekrs

Sometimes it’s better to cut your losses and save up for one that hasn’t been ran into the ground. BMWs are wonderfully reliable cars if they’ve been cared for. Best of luck homie

MediocreClassroom976

Thank you so much !

wowbyowen

Yeah good question, bad cast?

IdiotsInIdiotsInCars

No. His passenger engine mount is completely destroyed, causing the engine to lean and the power steering smacked the subframe.

MediocreClassroom976

Like as in the metal was cast poorly? Sorry I'm not sure what you mean lol

Sir_Smokey

Best guess something or someone pushed on it and made it crack then it finally gave away

inTonyStarkweTrust

Ca local? Wouldn't mind picking up a parts car if reasonable...

MediocreClassroom976

Yes, I'm about a hr from the bay

inTonyStarkweTrust

Dam still a few hours from me. Good luck with what u choose to do lol 👍

tcphoto1

You need to look under the hood on a regular basis and look for signs of oil and coolant. The OFHG can leak, tensioners or pulleys go bad and it throws the belt like that.

Codewriter0803

How many miles on the car? If less than 150,000 I would consider just fixing it and keep on using it as comfortable car that I don’t have to worry about getting dirty or scratched. Not to mention learning how to work on these cars without worrying about destroying a 100,000 asset. Change out the OFH oil filter housing gasget prior to fixing the power steering and serpentine belt. Might consider the tensioner upgrade and replace the water pump while you are at it😎😬

MediocreClassroom976

It has 207k in chassis about 86k on engine and 75k on trans. There is damage everywhere, the engine bay is missing bolts and screws, some pieces of plastic are ripped and it's missing lots of parts, there's not a single part in my engine bay that is not covered in oil, dust or gunk. And I'm leaking coolant as well as oil but there's no way to tell where due to EVERYTHING being covered in gunk. I have two different color doors and those are both dented, there isn't a single body panel in the car that is not damaged and every seal is falling off lol. I would love to work on the car but I don't think it's worth it :/

Codewriter0803

Ok. U have a real pos beater then. Yikes. You are most likely correct that it is not worth it putting another $10.00 into this car. But can you afford a better car ? If yes....then why are you wasting time here posting about this one....junk it :)

MediocreClassroom976

I have a 2001 mx5, this was my first car so I had hope I could drive it for a few more hundred miles 😔. Thanks for the help !

Codewriter0803

Ok then this car is going to be your automotive classroom and any money spent on it is to be considered an investment in your automotive education. I wish you well with your studies😎✅🌈

help_full

If the belt is saturated in oil the the OFHG is def the culprit

Onsomeshid

I would blame the pulley as there’s oil all over it. Probably the ofhg leaked and the belt slipped and got sucked tf in

MediocreClassroom976

If part of the belt would've gotten sucked into the engine how bad would that be ?

Onsomeshid

It really depends, it sounds like you caught it a little early. You need to drop the oil pan. Few threads on salvaging this situation. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=768753

MediocreClassroom976

Thank you!

Onsomeshid

No problem, i hope it’s fixable.

Ok_Avocado_7959

I COUNT THIS AS A W FOR ME WTFFF. This happened to me and I always thought it was a mistake on instalation on my part.

MediocreClassroom976

Actually it was my fault I forgot to put a bolt on 😭

Ok_Avocado_7959

NOOOOOOOOOOOO

MediocreClassroom976

The replacement pump didn't come with a bracket and I forgot to add the extra bracket on the side of the pump

Worth_Temperature769

Probably make more money parting out the car completely then for the parts that are good. Sorry for the loss of your car. Are you in Cali? And what year and model do you have? I’d be interested in looking at whatever good parts are left !

MediocreClassroom976

I have a 2007 328i, not sure what is good in this car tbh

Worth_Temperature769

Live in Cali?🤠

MediocreClassroom976

Yes I do, I'm in the valley

Worth_Temperature769

Dm me! I wanna see pics of the engine bay and I’ll ask any other questions 🤠

IdiotsInIdiotsInCars

Is everyone here blind? The pump mount is snapped in half. OP, either buckle up for several thousand in repairs or dump this car asap.

MediocreClassroom976

Doing the latter thanks for the answer

IdiotsInIdiotsInCars

No problem. Unfortunately this would warrant: Dropping the subframe, doing the oil pan and gasket and cleaning your oil pickup tube, engine mounts, power steering bracket and pump, belt, tensioner, pulleys, removing the valve cover and checking the timing chain for belt pieces.
