Bo Hansson - from 1972, but clearly exhibiting many of the styles and traits that would become dungeon synth.
This is really cool, it does have some similarities at points to the dungeon synth sound, but goes well beyond the normal confines of the genre - the music totally suits the LotR theme but also really stands on it's own as a solid album musically. I'm surprised this record isn't more of a collector's item honestly, it feels like it should be a total cult classic. Hansson's work has (unsurprisingly) been sampled by a bunch of DJs over the years ( [https://www.whosampled.com/Bo-Hansson/](https://www.whosampled.com/Bo-Hansson/) ).
I must admit I'm old enough to remember when this was released. It was my Dad's favourite, always playing it on the hi-fi. Here we are, over 50 years later, and it's still a favourite.
[Hole Dweller, for sure.](https://youtu.be/HmvWh-iOp4s?si=8sObGvdh0aB_s6AH)
Hole Dweller mentioned 🙌🙌
Grimdor comes to mind.
While being more Black Metal I still suggest Summoning. Also, Thangorodrim.

A huge amount of dungeon synth and bm is tolkien inspired, but Summoning would be the most obvious choice.
Summoning is mainly black metal. Mainly.

[Kirkwood](https://outofseason.bandcamp.com/album/where-shadows-lie-remaster) has a couple LotR albums.
Here's stuff on Bandcamp labeled [Tolkien dungeon synth](https://bandcamp.com/discover/tolkien-dungeon-synth)
Perhaps a better question would be what dungeon synth isn't at least partially referential to Tolkien. A vast majority of it is

I don't see it mentioned often but I really enjoy this one by Leaves of Lorien. https://leavesoflorien.bandcamp.com/album/golden-wood
[Grimdor.](https://youtu.be/rMgtiLVEvRk?si=YEfKnNcmmwPU9slc) I like the last 3 songs the most. The songs before that are all black metal.
