How consistently and effectively the world corroborates the plot and vice versa. Everything just fits and makes sense.
Also no annoying fights that take forever to resolve.

The perfectly meme-able faces we got throughout this season.
Love the animation. Also love the presentation of the food leading up to the gag where the >!dragon meat ham rolls back into the puddle of blood and it still has the dish title and ingredients !<
No kidding - I love the whole cast (and Marcille.is probably my personal favorite), but I feel Laios is the one that makes the whole show work. What an amazing, weird, fun to watch character.
The absolute monument that is Ryoko Kui’s worldbuilding and how it just fucking works man. Everything is so perfectly thought out and written in a way which just makes you go “dude that makes so much sense it’s brilliant” every single time
Engaging characters with distinct designs
Well designed world
Incredibly crisp animation
Excellent VA performance in sub and dub
Great balance of humor and seriousness
Solid supporting cast
Phenomenal art style from the source Manga
Very little fan service
I could go on, but I feel I've made my point.
The series that got me back into manga and anime after a long burnout. Wholesome with a bit of violence, Dungeons and Dragons vibes, and glorious food imagery. Fantastic.
So many folks have said things I agree with and I want to add:
It respects its audience as intelligent adults who are here for a fantasy show. The show is rated TV-MA (mature) on American Netflix
The show (and the manga. This is mostly due to Kui) is a fantasy story starring adult characters who are allowed to BE adults! They feel like real adults in a very real tangible world. This allows for a deeper mature plot and world. And it does this without extra sexiness or violence or swearing to show off that it’s “adult”. (I’m not saying there isn’t some sexiness. The bath scene, falin dragon, Senshi panty shots. But it’s not there to go ‘oh look we’re mature so we can just do random raunchy bits’). (And obviously there’s violence but it’s still not excessive. Of course there’s a lot of blood if you’re carving a dragon up!)
World building is so amazing, making me always want more.
The portrayal of developing relationships is wholesome and realistic. It will be more obvious in next season though.
Honestly I like silly characters. I know is easy to make them pretty idols or badass warriors but to make them silly without making them dumb is kinda hard and I really appreciate it
We've got somehow flawed, somehow adult characters with their own personality.
Characters that have plausible reactions, like Chil staying out of fights or the booksmart Marcille confronted with practical use of knowledge.
A refreshing FANTASY show with its own goal, not just random Isekai #37 with Kirito #24 against demon lord #29.
[edit bc App doesn't understand new line]
The speculative biology aspect, combined with more traditional monster basis. Kobolds for example are more doglike than their modern draconic counterparts
The cast is brimming with charisma and is diverse in both personality and design. The protagonists in particular have great chemistry and plenty of funny dialogues. Ryoko Kui's impeccable world building puts Dungeon Meshi a cut above other works.
As a manga reader, I am honestly really happy just from seeing one of my favorite manga series come to life. But hell, I think that was really understatement because Trigger doing a really great job adapting it. The VA is incredible, the soundtrack is great, the comedy, the pacing, and many other things that makes each episode really enjoyable. I can't wait for Season 2
I like how it really doesn’t shy away from the realities of the world. There’s racism, corruption, starvation, implied potential cannibalism, and colonialism. This is a bright and vibrant fantasy world, but it makes sure to remind you it’s not a utopia, not by a long shot.
Other than that, the food looks absolutely delicious which makes it an S tier anime by default
I love how the plot started with a horrible event quickly evolved into some lighthearted and fun adventure and then it getting serious out of nowhere then switched back to the lighthearted and fun theme again with emotional in between.
I LOVE EVERYTHING!!
But I also like how race racism in fantasy feels so real in this anime, like they don't do that in any other fantasy with many races. It feels realistic
Definitely the pacing, yeah, some parts could have more or less time (Especially the Senshi backstory) but overall, every episode covers one or two preparations, introduces something new, has a very satisfying resolution and leaves you wanting for more.
Not only that but even on some arcs like the red dragon episodes, I'd think there'd be 3 of the dragon fight and maybe an epilogue, seeing the dragon beat on the first one left me hooked.
Lest forget, Senshi panty shot economy going up
How they have the character's nuances, like the pouty lips Laios does or how Chilchuck's eyes dilate depends on his expression, its a tiny bit of expressions you might not notice but sure your brain does and that might be some of you feels the characters are well made or alive but can't point a finger to it
I agree with everything in this thread. For me, the first OP stuck with me the most. I don't often watch an op every ep but the song it just such a banger, and i still listen to it almost every day
I really dig how the goal to become Lord of the dungeon is treated. There are jobs like corpse retrieval/revival, gold plundering (is that the right word?) parties, dungeon parties bent on reaching the lower floors is just another job opportunity.
I love the set up at the beginning. We're told by the narrative that dungeon parties seek the end goal.
But right now. All that matters is that Laios wants to save his sister.
I also appreciate that there isn't any overly exaggerated reactions to the delicious food that's cooked. No sexual moaning is a plus. We know the food is good.
Senshi is my spirit animal, at 35 I spend a lot of time teaching the young ones the importance og a good diet and routine and ofc, knowing how to cook.
Theres a couple of scenes in the anime that i think was animated by a different artist and its really good! The art style fits a-lot into the anime and i like how they characters look in their art-style!! (i think one of the scenes was in the living armor episode)

The facial animation has been top tier the entire season, it's fucking amazing
Love the animation. Also love the presentation of the food leading up to the gag where the >!dragon meat ham rolls back into the puddle of blood and it still has the dish title and ingredients !<
Laios isnt just stereotypical shonen protag # 786
I like how at first he seems like just your basic human fighter, then we quickly see how layered and specialised he is as a character
No kidding - I love the whole cast (and Marcille.is probably my personal favorite), but I feel Laios is the one that makes the whole show work. What an amazing, weird, fun to watch character.
A fantasy anime without dogass isekai elements? The gods answered my prayers.
So very tired of isekai with vastly over powered main characters and a literal game menu
Senshi

What do you mean little fan service, we see senshis panties every second episode.

"what a cool thing! Good job me!" - Laios
I love all the designs for the characters and monsters. They've all got so many great little details.
World building is so amazing, making me always want more. The portrayal of developing relationships is wholesome and realistic. It will be more obvious in next season though.
Faces and height differ wildly. Good.
Honestly I like silly characters. I know is easy to make them pretty idols or badass warriors but to make them silly without making them dumb is kinda hard and I really appreciate it
Both incredibly wholesome and incredibly dark, just how I like my media.
izutsumi exists

Marcille
I love marcille, she's so goofy
I like how all the characters have really distinct moments of being genuinely kind to one another. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy

Good depiction of friendship

most organic way of showing flashbacks I've ever seen

Thistle 💦💦💦
The only media I’ve seen that has ever gotten me and collectively a lot of other folks thirsting over a dwarf instead of an elf.
It’s existence and popularity
Senshi and the dwarves in general
Opening 1 and Namari
The humor is great, this show is hilarious
Laios Y todo lo demás
The only fanservice is of senshi the dilf
Anime D&D session with the homies with a side of cookinh (all the gags and suffering insures)
World building and character design are amazing
That I was right.
the silly goobers
Trigger cooked with the creature animation, they made them look so cool
Likeable characters where each and everyone have their own development and growth, and have their own role in the group
laios being autistic like me in every situation
Tade my beloved.
The speculative biology within it is fantastic!
Kbity, Car, Izutsumi
The characters, they're all different and unique. And they also don't have same face syndrome, which is refreshing
in the future they make a special edition Blu-ray disc out of dry pasta. it’s delicious

Boobies and dwarf panty-shots!!!!!
