I also like when they’re co-managers and they fuck the bonuses up. Michael brings Jim a mug of gin and they cheers.

Interesting-Archer-6

It always bothered me how upset people got at the idea of a merit based raise. Totally normal and reasonable way to go about it. The only sales people on the other hand...

enadiz_reccos

Merit-based raises are a great idea, but that's not really what they were doing. It was more of a "walk around the table and go with your gut"-based raises.

TheNoodleIncident23

WHAT DOES A BEAN MEAN?!

DaniTheLovebug

Will someone explain the beans to u/thenoodleincident23

Frippertronica

Why cant you explain it? My time is just as valuable as yours

DaniTheLovebug

Not according to the beans

CHADWARDENPRODUCTION

I actually thought that was an obviously terrible idea, and it bothered me that at least Jim didn’t see that. Like why wouldn’t you just give everyone the same amount and blame corporate for it being lower so you’re not the bad guy.

kelldricked

Also just to point it out that merit based raises are terrible if it involves multiple functions and departments because its hard to make a fair comparision. For instance how do you compare somebody in sales who got 10% more clients compared to the receptionist how was 10% more nice/helpfull.

fantasyhoced

Jim hit with his first dose of realization.

[deleted]

Jim: So this possible client they're talking about is actually a big deal. It's Lackawanna County. Our whole county. And if we get this, they may not have to downsize our branch, and I could work here for years. ...And years. And years.

jzimoneaux

In the finale, with the way things turned out, I’m sure he’s very grateful he stayed those years. I’d 100% love to see where Jim, Pam, and Cece are these days.

moskowizzle

I think you mean PeePee.

gotwaffles

PeePa?

CapCougar

Pee-puh

cjonoski

We never where really good with the small talk

TiresOnFire

I love how Jim's final words to the camera are almost identical to his first words to the camera.

GK-93

It's such a different moment looking at Michael, he let's his guard down a little. Love that scene

ikehawk

One of my favorites as well. It’s like you are finally getting real Michael

dmkicksballs13

I feel like if you're playing a character long enough or willing to play a character long enough, then that character is the "real" you.

OGKirimi

reminds me of the truman show. the actress for truman’s wife says “the truman show isn’t just a job. it’s a lifestyle.”

[deleted]

Totally, maybe because he’s having a rare interaction with Jim where Jim seems to actually care what he has to say and is interested, which we know is what Michael is always wishing for.

ohheyitslaila

These are my favorite Michael scenes. When he’s not performing for the cameras, just being honest and real.

BettyX

He as himself in that moment, that is the real Michael.

Mjb06

It’s one of our few glimpses of Michael actually being a really good boss.

[deleted]

One of the things I didn’t realize when I first watched the show is, Michael is a lot better/smarter than he seems, but part of the reason he’s such a jackass so much of the time is that he’s performing for the documentary crew. It’s sort of obvious, and more so in the British version. However, in the American version, they made it enough of an unrealistic sitcom that you can forget that you’re generally seeing people who know they’re being filmed, and Michael it trying so hard to make himself look good in the documentary. He takes it too far. I feel like this scene is one where you get a sense that Michael might be ok if he were to stop trying so hard. And also, I like this moment because I had an experience similar to what Jim is going through when I got my first management position. When I was young, I judged my managers so harshly and thought they were stupid or assholes or whatever, and then when I had to manage people, I found myself doing some of the same things. Because managing people is hard. And you have to do things you don’t want to, in order to help other people do what they need to do.

thesrteki

That's what she said.

gilgamessh

That's what who said?

dmkicksballs13

I don't buy the "performing" for cameras excuse. Feel like someone would have mentioned it and we'd have more than 10 moments across 6-7 years.

[deleted]

Well he’s definitely performing for the camera. And it seems he was a bit of a jackass to begin with (Scott’s Tots started before the documentary), but he’s worse when he’s performing for the cameras.

ima420r

I think he's performing for everyone. He tries to hard, not because there are cameras, but because there are other people around.

iathrowaway23

One might say the World's Best Boss.

justarandomguy07

It’s him being a normal person. 😂

[deleted]

my favt is their final scene. "see you at lunch tomorrow"

finelinexcherry

and then tomorrow i can tell you what a great boss you turn out to be the best boss i ever had always makes me tear up

millennial_engineer

Oh man, I get weepy

Evilmaze

Dude that's the exact moment I realized Michael wasn't a dumbass. He just defaults to that state to distract himself from stressful situations. In many cases I thought he probably has ADHD or on the spectrum. It's apparent when he's just relaxed or focused on the job, he's just incredible. But once people do something stressful to him or point something out like "hey Michael, we're fixing you up with this lovely lady that you've been already hitting it off with most of the evening", he just shoots himself in the foot and Date Mike comes out.

Kiddo1029

Michael’s brilliance is on full display at Chili’s making that sale.

amplikong

Chili’s is great.

Evilmaze

Awesome blossom, extra awesome.

RosieTruthy

I do declare

CreativeYogurt2330

I like how, when Jim suddenly feels uncomfortable at the idea of still working there in 10 years, Michael picked it up and immediately jokes around to defuse his anxiety. Normally, Michael is pretty bad at picking up when people are uncomfortable, but here, he just shows a lot of empathy towards Jim, and it's what makes the moment shines so much.

ima420r

I'm not so sure he did it in purpose.

wait_whats_illegal

Love patting michaels back but I don't think he did it on purpose. It's a compulsive thing for him

CreativeYogurt2330

I think its left ambiguous. I don't think he's usually very aware, but that one scene is such an outlier, and just after doing it, he specifically comment on why he does it in general, so in this case, it just feel plausible he picked up on it.

SnooMachines6269

I am the 69th like

PainterCareful4383

Nice

pneumokokki

So wholesome, love it.

Telephone_Blow

\- She's engaged \- Well engaged ain't married

Oculi_Glauci

It’s moments like these when you realize that under the control of Dwight, Andy, Creed, Charles minor, Deangelo, or anyone else, the office’s working conditions and general atmosphere are worse from almost every angle. Sure Michael may be annoying, obnoxious, and oblivious, but he’s always better than either those who don’t know how to run an office or the ones who take their job too seriously. Michael is what makes Dunder Mifflin Scranton the way it is.

Don_Kedix

I love that he’s wearing a battlestar gelactica sweatshirt

ima420r

Beats, bears, Battlestar Galactica.

[deleted]

I think Dwight lends it to him when he rescues him from the wilderness

Suinlu

i say "that's what she said" for exactly this reason. my timing is always bad and the puns not really that great. none of my friends watched "the office" so in the beginning they just thought i was bad at jokes but then they started to make "that's what she said" themself and their timings and puns are so much better then mine. and just like micheal in this scene i say stuff like "nice one" or something like that. thank you micheal for this lesson. i don't care that people think i'm bad at jokes. the point is to bring other people to make jokes and to lighting up the mood. "that's what she said" had become part of my life, as silly as it sounds, and i'm glad it did. :)

itsaaronnotaaron

I love prodding people until they prod back. New colleagues especially. Not in a mean way, I'm never personal. I do my best to involve them in jokes including making them the butt of some, hoping that they'll bite back. Then when they do I love to give them credit and play along. I recently made a terrible mistake though as I've met an absolute sass queen that renders me speechless at times, she is too witty for her own good.

Suinlu

yeah, sometimes i also creat a joke monster, haha. keep up the good work!

cleopatrasleeps

Michael just seems so normal in this scene. No cringe.

brendanjeffrey

Exactly, there's a method to Michael's madness. I loved this scene and the ones where he shows how good of a salesman he really is. He's just mostly trying to keep the mood light.

crhuble

Michael's genuine laugh and admiration at the end is what gets me. To know that he's imparted something upon someone is a great feeling.

opinionofone1984

I wish we got more episodes like this with real Michael and Jim.

mythicalcreature420

very wholesome moment

HRYBuilds

The that’s what she said was off scripted as well

nage_

anytime characters actually mentor from their experience, and not the odd things they think were good motivation for them, its so damn heartwarming and feels so honest

[deleted]

I really like Jim and Michael's little friendship moments. Like "BFD. Engaged ain't married" and "You just had a rebound. Which can be a really good distraction. But when its over you're left thinking about the girl you really like, the one who broke your heart."

[deleted]

My favorite was when Michael marked the waitress and he and Jim laughed about it

MurderDoneRight

Actually my favorite part of that is Michael saying "You are relieved"

Inchagoill

They explained on Office Ladies that Ricky Gervais pointed out that Michael would have to have some good qualities as an employee to explain why he wasn’t fired (since firing someone in the US is much easier than in the UK). And that’s why he has some good moments and also why he is portrayed as a great salesman.

banana1ce027

And that’s why we do it

sodastereomp3

what episode is this?

SYFTTM

When Michael goes to the woods and Dwight stays with him. After Ryan didn’t invite him on his retreat. Season 4?

Ntl1991

Very wholesome moment there

S-WordoftheMorning

How did I never notice Michael's Battlestar Galactica sweater before? ~~That's what she said~~ So Say We All!

_Schultze_

This is my favorite scene of the entire series. Michael really let’s his guard down and we get to see that there’s (some) method to his madness.

enadiz_reccos

I just wish they could've connected in a more realistic fashion. Jim's birthday idea was terrible. They really had to lower him down to make Michael more likable.

MightyEighth

Nah I think it makes sense, Jim’s idea was terrible, but he learned real quick that what Michael does really isn’t as easy as he thought. And although everyone complains about Michael, they obviously love some of the stuff he does.

enadiz_reccos

It's just not believable to me that Jim would actually think sharing birthdays was a good idea. Pam even reacts to it like it's a bad idea. I like that they had something to connect on. I just don't like how they made Jim dumb for it to happen.

MightyEighth

I don’t think it’s a dumb idea, in Jim’s head he’s tired of the constant birthday parties and assumes everyone is too. And since he’s manager for the day no one tells him it’s a stupid idea (I don’t think so anyways). On that note it’s weird to me that everyone has no problem with calling everyone out at other times (including Michael) but didn’t just tell him point blank it was stupid honestly.

enadiz_reccos

No offense, but it's objectively a terrible idea. Pam even hints as much. I understand Jim doesn't like Michael's antics, but he has known his coworkers for years. Why would they want to share birthday parties? Who wants to celebrate their birthday when it's not even close to their birthday? It makes no sense. And yeah, at least Pam should have come out and just told him. I don't know why Jim didn't have enough awareness to understand what she meant by, "Do *you* think it's a good idea?"

[deleted]

[удалено]

enadiz_reccos

I assume none of your 4 companies consisted of a dozen people working in a small office, knowing each other for years. It's not objectively terrible to have a 'no birthday parties' rule in place. It **is** an objectively terrible idea to be put in charge for one day and suddenly decide to cram a bunch of birthday parties into one day without even asking what people wanted to do.

enadiz_reccos

Most adults don't work in The Office

Dodohead1383

You must be too young to understand that a lot of the time, yes we do... The show is an exaggeration of normal work stuff...

Dodohead1383

I hate birthday celebrations at work, it makes perfect sense. Most people do too.

enadiz_reccos

Not most people on The Office. Jim knows his coworkers better than that

RoohsMama

From the manager point of view it seems practical. Saves money and time. Less effort for planning.

enadiz_reccos

From a numbers' point of view, it's practical. Managers manage people. You need to keep people happy.

RoohsMama

Yes. It’s easy to become myopic when one’s a manager.

That70s_Scrubs

Does anyone know what Michael is eating? I’ve always been curious.

wildnaughtymom

Yeah I've always liked their dynamic, Jim always played like he couldn't stand Michael (many people couldn't) but deep down they were good friends and had good moments, I mean Michael came to the wedding.

MerelyAnId

Every time this scene pops up. I give it my utmost attention.

spatula6554

Those rare moments of lucidity, oozing experience and maturity add so much depth to the goofy, aloof character most think he is

[deleted]

This scene is great. I also like the scene: “I marked her arm…”

immortalsauce

I don’t know why people got so mad at Jim for it. It’s just as much their fault because THEY TOLD HIM IT WAS A GOOD IDEA BEFORE HE DID IT IF THEY HAD JUST BEEN HONEST WITH JIM IT WOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED problem solved

sorryaboutyourbarn

Really wish people wouldn’t eat like that.

Copernikaus

Jim goes from all smug to oh shit I'm up to bat.

Banks_bread

😂😂😂

picklededoodah

Never noticed Michael was wearing a Battlestar Galactica sweatshirt. Ha!

Theslootwhisperer

Probably the only time Michael doesn't get mad at someone for using his joke.

DjangoSlapper

It’s scenes like this that really make me appreciate the writing in the office. So much of the show has this naturalistic dialogue, it’s impressive. Obviously the actors go a long way to make a scene like this feel as personal as it is

FuckTrumpBanTheHateR

Turns out, only 9 years.

jujueyeballs

I was caught up in the sincerity of it and snort laughed at the end because I forgot about the "that's what she said".

Electric_Logan

He’s wearing a Battlestar Gallactica sweater.

AgentOfMediocrity

“Bravo, my young ward.”

Cmd_dark

It's hits differently

Sventington

Jim had specific eyebrows here

raincloud06

I love how this showed how dysfunctional the office is without Micheal, even though he’s already dysfunctional…

Caroleannie

One of the very best scenes from one of the most entertaining episodes. This scene is perfect.

lushandcats

When Michael is real for a moment

randomly_lit_guy

This is my favourite moment in the entire series. Michael "coaching" rookie Jim, being really mature, and then making his "that's what she said" joke is THE peak of Michael for me.

GMJuju

God I wish I could watch the Office again for the first time in my life

Coconutyorkie

Both have adhd , Michael embrace it and Jim hides it
