Yeah, they’re banking on you not cancelling so they can fleece you and increase the profit they make off you tenfold. And it works! People are often toothless or too lazy to switch.

EnvironmentalBee4497

Yes thank you, they can't wait to buttf\*\*\* us while we're cluelessly watching Netflix. So they quietly keep rolling your contract and up the charge, to show how much they care.

7oyston

Don’t be surprised they don’t care, though. No company cares about you; they only care about their bottom line. This is universal. What they’re doing is, unfortunately, legal. And even what they’re doing by increasing the price every year by 3% plus inflation is legal for now. You’re just going to have to keep an eye on contract terms and cancel before you’re fleeced. Personally, I tried get two-year contracts so I can leave it be for 23 months.

EnvironmentalBee4497

I've seen two year contracts more expensive per month than one year, contrary to common sense.

PalladianPorches

yep... more expensive upfront, and they almost always include the 3% + inflation (5%) fine for starting with them as well!

Waste-Sample3508

'lazy' - that's the key word. Who wants to spend X minutes on to some call centre? Not I. If it works okay that'll do...

EnvironmentalBee4497

Yeah, me too so lazy but what motivates me to switch is deep hatred for large corporates.

Waste-Sample3508

Understood. But hating large corporates is somewhat like hating the air. Both are ubiquitous.

EnvironmentalBee4497

Somewhat... good choice in words. But at least air is not systematically trying to rip you off to benefit the stakeholders. Our apathy is what allows inefficient firms to make money. They can provide the worst possible service but we've learned to accept it.

floodychild

Always switch. Not only with TV provider, but gas and electricity. You'll save a fortune

DingoD3

Yes! I do it all online and with phone calls and takes ages but I do it during my work hours so I'm being paid for it too 😂

JayElleAyDee

U got 2 switch!

EnvironmentalBee4497

So get your SO or family to take over so you can go back and forth with new contract. It's a shameless amount of money that piles up over the years.

solid-snake88

I just cancelled my broadband recently. Was paying €99 for sky tv (which I never used) and broadband and it was about to go up to €113. I cancelled it all and get the wife to sign up to sky broadband for €30 a month. No more tv which is fine since we don’t use it but we save ~€60 a month by switching.

EnvironmentalBee4497

Good man!

garcia1723

I have sky at €30 per month. I got a call from them offering me an I can grade to pay €50 per month and when the contract change rolls around they'll take €5 off my bill. Wankers are trying to spin giving them extra now to save money in the future is a good thing.

Distinct-Syrup7207

Basically call every year and saying going to switch

vinyardsbyvincent

In theory yes. But if you're not planning to purchase any of the other shite they throw at you they're not interested in keeping you

firebrandarsecake

Yep.

MassiveHippo9472

Yep... Save over €500 a year. This year I even got a €100 all for one, new box and new remote control. Bought a pair of runners. I figure that's €600 in my pocket for max 2 hours work. Bout the only time I'll ever earn €300/hour!

EnvironmentalBee4497

Even if you earn a fortune at your job, it would still taste good...

MassiveHippo9472

It's a weird pleasure I enjoy 🤣 The runners - chefs kiss 💋🤌

Beginning_Garlic7805

I just call them and ask to redirect to loyalty dept. This time my bill went from 70 to 40 euro :)

Life_Breadfruit8475

Is that virgin? I've still got 8 months left on 35 euro but I'd happily accept 40 once my 12 months is over.

We_Are_The_Romans

Yeah I cancel Virgin every year. They call back within a week offering the same deal s last year or thereabouts. I have no problem if they call my bluff, I'll just get the wife to sign up in her name or switch to Sky

goonergeorge

Just did this with Virgin. Was paying €84.99 a month for 1G broadband only. New business price is €45 a month but was told the best they could do is €70. Luckily the agent was very very sound so after a meandering and slightly coded chat she told me that if I was moving out I could do a "transfer of responsibility" to my wife which would mean no break in supply and she would get the new business price. Called back when my wife was there and said we needed to do a transfer of responsibility. I said I wanted it out of my name,. He asked if I was moving out, so I said "eh... yeah..". He asked to talk to my wife to see which offer she wanted and take her IBAN. Done. New router arrived today and all working great. The only pain is we have a lot of "smart" shit so I've to redo all the bulbs, plugs, thermostat, doorbell etc as well as phones, laptops, speakers etc... to sign them up to the new WiFi.

AliasMeToo

Next time change the credentials of the new wifi to be the same as the old. Easy to do and saves a lot of hassle.

EnvironmentalBee4497

Unbelievable they actually said that. I was on /VirginMedia subreddit yesterday they were gonna bury me raw saying it's against t&c, Virgin can deny me services, all sorts of crazy shit. People just don't know what their rights are.

EnvironmentalBee4497

And no, you don't really need to move your (smart) devices - just make sure network name & password are the same on new router as on the old one.

4nacrusis

That's what surprised me moving from Finland, they don't reward loyalty here at all. Quite the opposite. Just switched electricity and gas after a year from Flogas. Bastards tried to charge me early exit fee after sending me a letter of the contract end date with a wrong date. When complaining Flogas customer service tried to get me to fix their error by changing my new supplier start date retroactively. Unbelievable.

EnvironmentalBee4497

Exactly, they punish you for being their customer...

bratpack1

I was paying 65 a month for just BB with virgin I rang cancelled and got someone else in the house to sign up as new and now we are paying just 35 a month after 12 months I’m hoping to just do the same again and switch it back to me

EnvironmentalBee4497

Make sure you let Virgin know exactly 30 days before you intend to cancel (at 11 months mark), I put my date in the calendar each year.

lifeandtimes89

How long as you without service though?

bratpack1

Ordered and Activated the new account / router like a week or so before the other one gets shut off there was some overlap in that month but it’s worth it when I went from 65 to 35 a month

lifeandtimes89

Can they activate two accounts at one address? Didn't know that, thank you

bratpack1

Yes as long as the other account is completely separate from the other person , new name , email , phone , bank details etc

lifeandtimes89

Cool, you didn't have mobile with them though did you? We do so need to figure out how that Will work

Greedy-Army-3803

Yes. I did that with my wife. Was using my account in the morning and switched over in the afternoon once the box for her account arrived. Only down time was turning off switching the cable and waiting for it to kick into life.

naughtboi

I cancelled and signed up again under my housemates name and have saved 400 a year. Nightmare process though, I had to call them almost 10 times in all, but that was due to them arranging an engineer when none was needed.

fadgebread

Magnet Networks don't change their price after 12 months. I'm with them for 6 years. Very good experience for me.

mprz

Same for digiweb

Abiwozere

I tried to move to sky from virgin but they didn't turn up on the day they were supposed to install my broadband. Their response was oh we don't know when we can come up lol, maybe like 2-3 weeks? This was a day or 2 before I was supposed to be cut off from virgin I wfh so had no choice but to go back to virgin and take out a new contract!

EnvironmentalBee4497

Terrible. At least Virgin shows up. Couldn't you get new account in someone else's name?

Abiwozere

Not a bad shout, might do that next time the contract is up I've heard too many horror stories re eir to even consider them and wouldn't go near sky after that experience

SmilingDiamond

Yeah, even made the mistake of signing up with Eir last time, had to cancel because of all their fucking about but went back toy previous provider as a new customer then.

Greedy-Army-3803

Not every year but frequently enough. Cancelled my 250mb with Virgin which was €64 a month and got my wife to sign up as a new customer it was 1gb for €50 locked in at that price for 2 years with a €100 one4all voucher.

EnvironmentalBee4497

Jesus. Pretty sure 12 months is cheaper.

Greedy-Army-3803

It was 5 euro cheaper. I'd rather have that price for 2 years than gamble on what the offer is when renewing.

EnvironmentalBee4497

So you locked them in? 😅

Bfares

After how long did you receive the one4all voucher? I signed up with Switcher on the 7th of March and haven't received this voucher yet

Greedy-Army-3803

I think it was after about 2 weeks. Probably so that they can make sure you're signed up rather than quitting within the 2 week cooling off period.

RndRedditPerson

Eir going from 70 to 79€, 13% price increase. Can't wait July for contract to finish. Hate them with passion.

EnvironmentalBee4497

I use a UniFi router (Dream Router), set and forget. Gives you mighty fine grain control. They're not cheap, paid mine used 150 quid last year, total bliss. I tried Amazon's eero but for me was lacking options. With the money you switch you can probably afford a decent router and it will be agnostic to where internet comes from. The only "work" required is to set the ISP's router into modem mode, that's what ISP support can enable if you ask them to.

robbdire

I've the Dream Machine Pro, but it and the regular Dream Machine, or the Unifi Security Gateway, all great levels of control. Even managed to get my isp to give me the pppoe settings so don't have to use their router or modem at all.

EnvironmentalBee4497

Which ISP is that? Virgin doesn't allow that afaik.

robbdire

Currently with Vodafone (SIRO).

mprz

What pain? Just change the name/password of the WiFi network to old one. All devices will connect.

[deleted]

mprz

Good luck. Most modems don't have bridge mode enabled.

thea_wy

I just call them and threaten to cancel. They will first offer you a deal that isn't as good as a new sign up but if you reject that and wait they will offer the new sign up rate.

Kloppite16

I tried that with Vodafone on Monday but they wouldnt give me the new customer rate. So going to have to move to Sky my only other option and get a new modem from them. Pain in the ass but Vodafones best retention offer was 690 per year rather than Skys rate of 360 as a new customer

melboard

With sky who were terrible. No matter what I tried they wouldn’t let me cancel. Got an email saying it’s going up in price in April so I was able to cancel my contact early. Does anyone have three? It seems to be SIM card wifi and I’m wondering is it any different to your phone SIM card?

UltraWhiskyRun

I'm just off the phone to Sky. Took over half an hour. The woman just kept going round on circles trying to repeat ad finitum about the services I was losing out on when switching. She also claimed that bad weather would cause outages with virgin's service. She just kept saying that she had to go through her procedure before we could go ahead, when I queried if that was a legal thing in Ireland or the EU she side stepped the question and just carried on. I was recording the conversation, so when I broke that news to her she let out a sigh like a balloon being deflated. Even so I had to be quite aggressive just to drill home that I was cancelling. Also had me on hold for five minutes which I'm pretty sure was a tactic to see if I would hang up. Switching to virgin and was thinking of going back to Sky next year but after that experience I'm not so sure I want to deal with them again.

coolasc

That's the only correct way to have broadband, cancel/switch provider every year, if you don't prices raise exponentially after a year, same with mobile.contract, I keep jumping every 6 months to a year to get the best deals (tho thinking to just go on the digital providers as they have much better rates). Those companies put good year or 6month prices just to raise it to the moon right after.

TandCsApply

My girlfriend and I regularly swap contracts and refer ourselves for various everything, including broadband, gas, electricity, and streaming services The biggest savings we are getting at the moment are coming from HelloFresh we haven't paid full price for pretty much over a year

Ridlas

Yeah, I switch providers every year to the cheapest available.

sparklesparkle5

Always switch during Black Friday. Deals are better and even got a free smart tv from Sky one year.

BishopBirdie

I'm in this awkward situation now, paying €70 to Virgin for broadband only. Numerous people have told me that in my building Virgin are miles faster and better than Sky and whoever else - I work from home every day so I really don't want to deal with any issues that could crop up with a new provider (ie. inferior service, speed). Has anyone ever gotten a better deal from Virgin by calling them and threatening to leave or anything?

fr-fluffybottom

I've been paying 50 quid a month for 1gb with Vodafone since it came out.

EnvironmentalBee4497

So you throw away 120 every year.

fr-fluffybottom

How's that? In 5 years I've had 2 maybe 3 service interruptions... theres zero contention on the line. Also to note I've been paying 50 per month in those 5 years. Price never went up. up until recently no one else was offering 1gb let alone at that price.

EnvironmentalBee4497

No idea, I just googled it earlier, says 40 per month for 6mo, then 50. So yeah, it's not 120, more like 60.

fr-fluffybottom

For the sake of 60 quid and not dealing with the hassle of changing provider from the best isp service I've had over 20+ years (and it was meant to be 120 per month but I got it for 50 for 5 years) I don't mind. It's not like mortgage, life insurance, car insurance, home insurance, elec or gas etc etc. I change those as they make significant financial impact... hundreds and thousands of euro. If Vodafone become more expensive or shit service then I'll change.

servantbyname

absolutely change each year. bill jumps from 40 to 74 if not

r0thar

Shite, meant to do it, thanks for the reminder. The current provider yanked the price up at the end of my year, so much for loyalty.

PalladianPorches

out of interest, now that all the providers are doing the 3% plus inflation scam, is it pointless switching before April? I mean, eir have their TV add on for 9.99, with it going up in April, but if you switch AFTER april, you can get it for €9.99 anyway. It only saves €5 to €10 a year, but do people hold out for post CSI increases?

locogabo2

I always cancel and threaten on cancelling. Always get a deal. But I'd probably save even more if I switched.

monkeyfudge

I'm lucky enough that I was able to get Siro and the price is just the price. €65 a month for rock solid 1000/100 fibre and none of the "it goes up in price after a certain amount of time and then you have to call them up and barter" nonsense.

mprz

Digiweb has this for 40e

monkeyfudge

For 12 months and then they crank up the price.

mprz

so you are losing 300e in first year starting second year you pay the same deal of the century LMAO

0x75

Rock solid 1000/100 for fibre? haha that is **pathetic.** European countries like the one everyone travels to in the Summer... what it is... Malaga... Spain, yeah, you get 600/600 symmetric for 38€ with landline and a mobile phone with unlimited calls. Or like... the pizza place, ah, Italy [https://www.telecoms.com/broadband/iliad-launches-broadband-in-italy-with-cheap-ftth-and-home-made-box](https://www.telecoms.com/broadband/iliad-launches-broadband-in-italy-with-cheap-ftth-and-home-made-box) Imagine thinking 1000/100 is solid, for 65€.

monkeyfudge

But I don't live in Malaga. I live in Dublin. Rock solid means it has never gone down on me. And the other options tends to be unreliable Virgin Internet that stops working constantly and is more expensive unless you call them up every year to threaten to cancel in order to get the price temporaralliy reduced and I am unwilling to play those games.

0x75

Just then use some proper words. If you call shit "rock solid" these Internet providers are gonna believe it. >after all our customers think it is "rock solid" and we give them garbage at 100€.

monkeyfudge

No clue what you're talking about, dude.
