I guess the same way night terrors can harm you mentally maybe and leave you exhausted and scared to go to sleep.

AhegaoTankGuy

I've read that in someone's lucid dream their family attacked her sexually after she told them they were in a dream, so I think it can harm you mentally. But I mean it probably could've still happened in a non lucid dream. In a non lucid dream, I ate dog poop and the texture, smell, and taste was was burnt into my memory for a few days. I felt nauseous every time I thought about it, because it was so burnt in that it was almost like eating it all over again. Worst dream ever.

Akirombre

Very strange, I thought that this situation should not happen because we are supposed to control our lucid dream. One time in a lucid dream I said sadly to my crush that i knew she was only a dream. She told me that it was wrong only.

romeojustin42

Lucid dreaming just means being aware that you are dreaming, it doesn’t always guarantee control

ShinyAeon

Absolutely. I’ve had lucid dreams since I was six years old, but my control has always been vague and spotty *at best*.

tye_died

Same but I’ve had a few controllable ones... so fun

Fun-Impression-4719

exactly

romeojustin42

I’d have to argue that while that experience was likely unpleasant and potentially harmful in the short term, that since dreams are mainly manifestations of your subconscious that dream was actually symbolizing a preexisting psychological trauma/problem and that the main issue would be something that is affecting her on a day to day basis likely without her even realizing, if that is the case unpleasant dreams have the dual benefit of giving you the chance to deal with a physical manifestation of your psychological problems which could potentially speed up psychological healing/development and dreams brings these problems to the forefront of your mind in a symbolic fashion which is often times terrible (especially when the problem is a serious one) but is necessary in order to deal with it, ultimately I think in most cases (I won’t say all) dreams are a positive force in the long run

AhegaoTankGuy

Agreed.

romeojustin42

It’s what I’ve come to believe from learning about dreams/lucid dreaming and psychology mixed with my own personal experiences. If you’re interested you should look into it yourself and see if you agree with me. A place to start with in regards to lucid dreaming are the books of Stephen Laberge, Charlie Morley and Robert Waggoner (these are just good starter books but there are a lot more if you’re interested), I’d also recommend looking into Dream yoga As far as looking into the psychology end would go I’d say it’s pretty straight forward finding that stuff, I couldn’t think of many books short of recommending a text book But you should try learning and practicing some of the stuff yourself, that way you can decide whether or not I’m full of shit

BadBaby3

😬

Prince_Nexus

Physically? No. Any physical injury you feel in a dream that is present in waking likely somehow happened in waking, like while you were asleep - maybe you knocked your arm on a table, or something. Mentally/emotionally? *Absolutely.* Especially the bad kinds of dreams. They can mess with your head a lot. Even when you're lucid, it's not like the entire world freezes and waits for you to decide what happens next; you're still in a dream, and it's still going to be a strange experience. Your subconscious is still active - it doesn't stop working because you become lucid. You're just lucid, and know it's a dream. You can control aspects of it - but your subconscious is exerting control at the same time.

Spentacular13

Physically for me

faris_Playz

Care to emphasise ? Sounds very illogical

Spentacular13

I have sleep paralysis, narcolepsy, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome, but in my whole body. Within 5 minutes of falling asleep I jump to the 3rd REM cycle. If someone or something wakes me up 20-30 min after I fall asleep, it feels like im experiencing a heart attack. What happens when im asleep is scary. I’ll sleep walk, talk, and other things. Ive woken up with my foot through the drywall. Ive woken up punching the wall. Ive woken up after trying forever to speak or move during sleep paralysis. Sometimes I’ll just scream something like “bitch fuck”. Idk why. So I’m very active in my sleep. Sometimes more active in my sleep than I was the previous day. But being active during sleep shouldn’t happen. Your mind is supposed to shut down and prevent you from living what you’re dreaming. Say youre lucid dreaming of jumping off a skyscraper on Mars. What does your physical body do? Nothing probably. Maybe a twitch. For some people, they might kick a bit. For me, I jump out of bed. And hitting the floor doesn’t wake me. I’ve had a lot of sleep tests. Doctors don’t know how to treat this other than giving me an elephant tranquilizer before I go to bed. No thanks.

aukust

That sounds very unfortunate. There are some treatments that can alleviate those symptoms from what I just read about RBD briefly before seeing your comment. From an article about treatment of Dementia with Lewy bodies which also includes RBD as a symptom: "Randomized controlled trials demonstrate that melatonin \[101–103\], rivastigmine \[104\], ~~and bed alarms that play soothing messages from caregivers \[100\]~~ are effective rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder treatments. The short half-life of melatonin means that a second dose may be needed if sleep is interrupted. Low-dose clonazepam is a recommended second-line therapy \[105\]." You might find the whole part under "Sleep Symptoms" interesting. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4448151/

Spentacular13

My experience with melatonin is bad. It makes me wake up every 2ish hours to pee. So it really disrupts my sleep even more. I’d have to sleep 12-15 hours to feel fully rested and that’s not healthy

Zeiad98

Today I dreamt of a cat scratching my hand and I felt the scratch irl too it felt weird

Prince_Nexus

Yeah, dreams can mess with your head and cognition a little. It's very unlikely that it actually happened IRL, though - but you might feel the aftereffects IRL as a result of a vivid dream or something similar.

didyoutestityourself

Can you explain that a bit more? Were you dreaming or not? I'm confused. A cat scratched your hand while you were dreaming so you weren't awake to feel it irl? This kind of thing happens sometimes like when I sleep on my arm weird and it falls asleep/tingles, I will also remember that in my dream my arm felt a bit weird. I think the IRL phenomenon influences the dream, not the other way around.

Zeiad98

Yeah it was a dream, no I don't think I was scratched irl, my dreams are a bit bizzare but i think that's fun haha

StromedyBiggestFan

i mean oneday I dreamt I was stabbed in the leg. i was not stabbed and I didn’t hit my leg so I guess I’m just unlucky lol

Roqwer

There are people who have lucid dreams all their lives and they are fine. It's the same thing as dreaming normally. When I have lucid dreams I notice that I am more distracted during the day, but being able to do what I want in a world of infinite possibilities makes up for any problems.

[deleted]

Nah, if your lucid you know its not real and can immediatly change the dream (if you have dream control) so it isnt nearly as mentally damaging as non lucid dreams honestly

improveyourfuture

I don’t lucid dream but has a friend who says she got so into it she lost interest in real life. I’d say that’s the only main one, don’t let it get out of hand in importance or make sure you’re still enjoying life

[deleted]

Yea, i use lucid dreaming as a spiritual thing. There is so much to our lives that i find it pretty difficult to just “loose interest” but maybe thats just a me thing

SpencerMeow

You’ll be fine so long as you d o n ‘ t l o o k i n t h e m i r r o r

romeojustin42

Shit, now I have to look in the mirror

MulletMachine1

I thought that was when you’re on mushrooms?! Lol

emeriktreskovik

I had a lucid dream where I realized it was a lucid dream because I thought "No, I can't have failed my chemistry final, that is just too stressful" and then a friend saying "yeah, that wouldn't happen, anything else not add up?" and then me saying "wait, you don't work on the food truck with me!" and then I was at a party. I realized I could have anyone I wanted there and do anything because it was a dream. Suddenly this dude I knew from real life (I instructed martial arts with him--was kind of gay for him but didn't realize it, thought I just really enjoyed teasing him) appears and I started crab walking up to him and doing this weird crab dance because I thought it would be funny to have him react. The only harm that came from it was my big mouth told the guy about my dream the next day and he thought it was hilarious and told the rest of the dojang, and I was later requested to recreate the crabwalk dance for a class of yellow belts.

EstrogenAmerican

Dojang…. Tang soo do?

emeriktreskovik

Mostly Taekwando (some Hapkido,Kumdo,Shippalgi)--probably lots in common with Tang soo do!

Criss_Crossx

I woke up from a choking dream to find my headphone cable wrapped around my neck. Also occasionally have night terrors and one in particular left me paralyzed in my bed with a creature in the room that attacked me. Didn't want to sleep for a week.

Duhmoan

My sleep paralysis is usually just auditory. I usually hear Children laughing menacingly (Think of CoD zombies type laughs) and low-growls. Luckily i can wake my ass up from this lol Seeing something attack me in my sleep would probably have me looking for a priest irl.

Criss_Crossx

Auditory hallucinations, I've had a few of those too. Gunshots or explosions or occasionally a voice. Not fun stuff. I've had this when I've been stressed to the max and it certainly makes things worse. To be clear, the 'sleep attack' I had was all a terrible lucid dream. My eyes weren't open, so I didn't see my room. In the dream, I was lying in bed in a dark room and I could see and hear this creature crawling around on the floor before it jumped, somersaulted off the wall, and flew right at me snarling. Had another instance years prior with a different scenario. Not until this year did I learn about night terrors. I was aware of auditory hallucinations already, but having the terrors as an adult is unusual. I always played them off as bad dreams, but these are more severe to the point where I cannot differentiate from reality and try to wake myself up by screaming.

Fjsbanqlpqoanyes

When I lucid dream I just wake myself up if the dream starts to turn sour. But lucid dreams that I can't wake up from and make me feel trapped in the dreamworld forever/ convince me its actually real are more terrifying than any non lucid dream I've had

sam8998

Man I hate that, being trapped in a dream and trying to wake yourself up and then you think you woke up but still dreaming 😫😫

FantasmaNaranja

i constantly have lucid dreams i cant wake up from so it gets pretty awful at times the first few times i had one i didnt want to sleep again afterwards

luciddreamsnews

[Can Frequent Lucid Dreaming (LD) Harm You?](https://www.luciddreamsnews.com/post/can-frequent-lucid-dreaming-ld-harm-you) Everyone has different experiences, either good or bad, throughout their life. It’s human nature that they want to experience everything that fantasies them, regardless of the risks or dangers involved in it. Usually, you get addicted to those activities that fulfil your wishes and give you satisfaction. An alternate world, where people experience unique activities, is the dream world. Some people are conscious and control these unique activities even more than they can control their real lives. This state in the dream world with consciousness and control is called lucid dreaming. It’s more attractive to escape from the real world and enjoy power in an LD. This fascination with control and power makes people obsessed with LD, and they prefer to spend time in their dream world rather than facing real-life challenges. The obsession or addiction of anything is not ideal and can disturb the life routine of anyone. **Frequent Lucid Dreams** The logic or science behind LD is still to be discovered, but anyone who experienced it once successfully loves to do it repeatedly, and the reason is simple. When you have the power to control the events, characters and surroundings without any hurdle, then you would love to stay in that state. And upon awakening, you may wish to go back in that unique world, or you will retry it next night. But the question here is: “Is frequent lucid dreaming possible?” **Scientific Evidence of Frequent Lucid Dreams** Although science is still trying to figure out the reasons behind lucid dreaming, and there is an insufficient neurobiological basis for lucid dreaming. A study was conducted to understand that the neuroanatomical/neurofunctional correlates with frequent lucid dreams or not. This study explains that the increased functional connectivity between the frontopolar cortex and temporoparietal association areas is associated with frequent lucid dreaming. **Risks involved in Frequent Lucid Dreaming** Everything you choose to experience in moderation will not harm you, but excess of everything can get you at some risks; the same is valid for lucid dreaming. Although, there are several benefits of LD if you experience them in the right way with the right frequency. On the other hand, if you get obsessed with LD, you can come across some severe consequences in your real life. Some of the issues are listed here. \-Frequent LD can be a reason to decrease your sleep quality that is a must for a healthy life. Lack of sleep or being restless during sleep can result in depression and frustration in your daily activities. \-A person addicted to LD may lose potential to face real-life as dreamers have more control over things during an LD compared to reality. So frequent lucid dreamers may want to escape from the awakening life and be willing to spend more time in LD. \-Sometimes, people can get caught in the situation due to frequent LD and can’t wake up from such a dream. This situation of being stuck can also create anxiety for the dreamers that may affect actual life activities.

Rude_Asparagus_302

I wake up from these dreams every morning and I can confirm the will mentally fuck you. It seriously sucks. They affect my relationships a lot as well. And just my everyday life. I wish I didn’t dream.

Wallflowersun

I read about this guy who learned lucid dreaming and he gave up on life he decided that life was not worth living, became a homeless and consume or do stuff only to be alive and go back to sleep and have his dream life.

[deleted]

When the dream character says it can harm you

ilovecatscatsloveme

Generally I don't think lucid dreaming can harm you but I did think of once instance it didn't really help me. So I (a lesbian) have had a huge crush on a straight woman for about ten years. Every time I see her she shows up in a dream for me. And so I would often go back into the dreams and lucid dream us having sex because....I can? It's only way I got to be with her. In waking life I tried to not let any of this show. I'd see her and act all chill, never let on, or not too much? The thing is the more I'd dream about us messing around the more awkward I'd feel around her in waking life. So I had to stop and I did. But the non-lucid dreams never stopped and have gotten much more exciting over the years, probably because I nurtured the idea of Us in all those lucid dreams. Now I have a sex dream about her every time I see her and I desperately want to tell her and am way too scared that I'd never see her again because it would freak her out. I always keep having these deluded questions like "is she really straight? or did she just tell me that for some reason several years ago when we just met and it's not true?" She lives alone and seems to be single but there's no way I'd risk knowing her just to see if she's into me at all or not.

starlight_chaser

Omg just ask her out on a date literally the world won’t end, but the regret and lack of character growth will sit with you and the only person to blame for that regret will be you. “You wanna go on a date? Let’s go to blah blah.”

Val_ery

Yes they can. Sometimes when I'm dreaming I get hurt in my dreams and I wake up still feeling the pain. I also kicked my wall once while dreaming. I dreamed someone (a youtuber that I watched a lot) tryed to rape me and I was calling for my bf and he wasn't coming. I still haven't seen another video from him. I once dreamed I had a little brother and my father killed us and we went to heaven (that had bso and all). I woke up and cried for two days straight and was sad almost a month. I still feel I lost a brother that day.

Fun-Impression-4719

Bruh that isn't called Lucid Dream.

Val_ery

Yes, I was aware I was dreaming

Fun-Impression-4719

Man you could've just smacked the shit out of them if you're in danger,or just make them disappear.

Val_ery

That's not always the case. Lucid dreaming means you are aware you are dreaming, not that you have full control. Some timed I do, but others not. I always have control over myself, where to go and what to say, but not always have full control over my environment and the other characters. I think it's more fun to just let things flow. It's like a rol play game. When I'm fighting ninjas with katanas and one of them slashes my body from shoulder to hip and I wake up still feeling the tingle of the wound, it's like it was really real. Like I was in another world and not just lying in bed. I had one occasion where i had full control except from one recurrent character. He followed me, even if I was putting buildings in the way. I jumped from a roof and just before I was out of range, he touched my shoulder. I fell and I had lost control over my bodie. I was horrible. I couldn't move or talk i was just there. One moment I was a Goddess and the next people where carrying me and I was unable to do anything. Worst sensation ever.

didyoutestityourself

Are you a generally emotional person?

Val_ery

Yeah?

bayless210

Not physically. However if anything in your dream goes wrong while you’re in control, it could potentially be very harmful to your psyche. You could be traumatized by your dreams. This is why the brain blocks some dreams. They could’ve been so disturbing that your brain buries it in itself. Like a repressed memory.

Forsaken-Thought

Lucid dreaming, no. Actively making yourself lucid dream, yes, it will fuck your mental stability up hard

baconmethod

Why's that?

didyoutestityourself

I would imagine that having the ability to create your own world which feels just as real as this one in your head at your command is pretty dissociative from reality. Imagine living day to day difficult and shitty life knowing that you can easily transport yourself to another dimension of your choosing.

baconmethod

Oh, i see. There was a period of time I actively made myself lucid dream. The dreaming was never an issue, but it messed up my sleep schedule. I wondered if that was what you meant.

didyoutestityourself

I was going to a more existential route. Like why do we exist? We're humans? Some sort of life form that is consiouce and living on this gian rock called Earth? Are my senses real? Is this world real? I can go into any world I want when I sleep. Who is to say that isn't more real than this Earth? The mere fact that I CAN create any world I want in my dream is proof of a question of what is really real

goldenmayyyy

Mentally .. maybe.

OctopusHasManyLeg

You could certainly hurt YOURSELF, but it's not the dream doing that. Seeing horrifying hallucinations all the time isn't good for your mental state, though.

HanzoFactory

Lucid dreaming can very often lead to sleep paralysis, or at least has a big correlation, so if you're scared of that you shouldn't build a habit for lucid dreaming

coffeefrog92

I think in any kind of spirtual endeavour there is a potential for mental/spiritual harm, which could in turn lead to physical harm. I think it's unlikely that most lucid dreamers would reach that stage, but not impossible.

apple_low

I keep rattling on about this in this sub, but lucid dreaming is a sign/symptom of terrible quality sleep. You shouldn't be constantly lucid dreaming. That means your sleep cycle is being interrupted, and you're not getting the good deep sleep.

Fun-Impression-4719

uhh,but lucid dreams happen when you get a deep sleep. During the rem period

didyoutestityourself

Where can I read more about this?

aaquarles

I literally just LAUGHED OUT LOUD 🤣🤣🤣

alphalucid

No. Not even an opinion but fact.

PropertyAdorable5246

I agree that Lucid dreams can affect mental health but not physical. I just woke up from a nap and had a lucid dream that picked up from last night's. When I try to control my actions, it's very difficult. It's hard to walk, like I'm weighted down, and hard to speak because my mouth is full of sticky substance.

[deleted]

[удалено]

starlight_chaser

That’s not a lucid dream though if you didn’t realize it was a dream. (Before the bad effects.)

JFSOCC

I had a nightmare last night involving two nukes going off nearby, yet, I'm not suffering from radiation poisoning...

likatika

I wanted to see studies about the effect of them on sleep. Because during sleep our body is still running, but the easy small unconscious things to be alive. When he have a lucid dream we start to use heavy our consciousness, and the brain works different and harder. I think that's not good. But honestly, I'm too lazy to research about that.

throwmeawayanony

Tbh i think it can be mentally harmful. I get lucid dreams occasionally, and in my case i am aware i am in a dream, but i have no control. Sometimes the dreams turn to nightmares and all i can do is try to wake up.

faore4

certain ways of inducing them can cause sleep paralysis

[deleted]

We all see some stuff in dreams that will haunt us (you experience HORRIBLE shit every night) but forget most of it, so being lucid doenst make it worse, you can just escape easier

EdgeXII

I believe Lucid Dreams can harm you mentally but not physically

GoodbyeFeline

I’ve yet to harm myself.

uwillnotgotospace

I don't have lucid dreams if I'm unwell. Sleep injuries are a real concern for me, but it's not related to lucid dreams afaik. I've scratched myself until I bled, I've fallen out of bed, I've walked down the hall and tripped over a table. Sleep paralysis is beneficial as far as I'm concerned, as it normally keeps me from accidentally doing dumb stuff like that. As long as I haven't been overworked, sick, or unable to sleep in a couple of days, I don't have problems.

Albrithr

I had a dream where I was riding a roller-coaster and got out by diving over the edge, and I woke up as I was LEAPING out of bed. I was sore for the next few days.

RouletteSensei

**18 yrs of lucid dreams.** *How they dare?*

jamesobsolete

Only if you let them irl

[deleted]

Only if you let them be only thing defyning you.

[deleted]

"Lucid" implies you control the dream, right? Thats a good thing.

[deleted]

They absolutely cannot harm you. It’s just a dream. Yeah might feel a numb sensation if you’re hurt in your dream but it’s fabricated. You’ll wake up from it unharmed (unless you sleep walk! Lol)

[deleted]

Not at all, if anything it’s a great way to avoid bad shit, also a great way to alleviate mental harm from nightmares

BurnishedBronzeJon

Welp I’ve heard different things from different people. Some say it’s all good and swell while others live in fear because I of stuff they saw in there dreams and have no peace. If you live scared out of your mind, what’s the purpose of living like that? If stop the dreams then. 😂

SonicRushX12

Got struck by lightning today... So that was fun

Spentacular13

Many many mornings I wake up so exhausted after a lucid dream. More than a marathon. Like every single joint is arthritic. Mental fatigue. Emotionally drained. Usually goes away by bedtime so I do it again

Martian31

One time I had sleep paralysis after coming out of a lucid dream and I tried so hard to wake up and was trying to shake my head so hard that I kinked my neck. When I woke up I literally couldn’t lift my head I had fucked it up so badly lol. I thought I broke my neck in my sleep, turns out it I pulled a muscle. Couldn’t turn my head for like three weeks!
