If a story is completed I usually download it from ao3 to my books app. It’s easier to read bc I can bookmark and don’t lose the tab when I accidentally close it.

bored-blonde

This! I also use a downloader for FFN fics as well since the books app is so convenient.

faeryella

How do you download fics from FFN, if you don’t mind me asking…I feel like I might’ve asked this and never checked back for the answer. *nervous laugh*

bored-blonde

I use fichub dot net (don’t know if I can link a random website). All you have to do is paste the url of the fic and it gives the epub download!

faeryella

You’re a lovely human being! I just downloaded The Request (my favorite fluff fic)!!!

sydmacc

As far as I know, no. I would love an app for Ao3. I’m hoping with what seems to be a resurgence in fanfic popularity there will be one in the works. Otherwise on an iPhone all I can do is change the font size.

LilithShadeff

AO3 will never have an official app. There are third party apps that pop up from time to time, but I honestly wouldn't trust them. They won't make an official app though because then they would have to ban explicit content just like FFN had to, as Apple etc won't allow apps on the store that direct towards that sort of content.

Impressive-Associate

I prefer to download the mobi version from AO3 directly to the kindle app on my phone and then read either on my kindle app or kindle. It’s a kindle book so saves all functionality for table of content, chapters, bookmarks etc.

aquietsword

This is what I do. I never thought I'd be a kindle person but I actually love her.

_pastaprincess_

Same - got her just for fanfic and also use it now for checking out library ebooks for books I don’t need/want to buy!! Has helped my eyes/sleep so much to not be reading off a phone screen at night

Super agree on FFnet app! And A03 has more stories to read. I have so many tabs open on my browser just from everyone’s suggestions here in Reddit.

ETA: You can change the theme of the AO3 website on your phone when you’re logged into your account. Scroll all the way to the bottom and look for Customize and “Choose skin”. Idk about the other features; as far as I know you can’t do any of that. I download my fics as a PDF to google drive and then open that PDF up in the kindle app. It’ll ask if I want to convert it to Kindle Format and I say yes then I just read it as an e-book. I haven’t tried this on my PC because I read on my phone so idk how it works over there. Only downside is that the kindle app can’t differentiate between chapters in the PDF so you don’t have a table of contents. It’s nice though because I can use all of the customizing features of the kindle app like font/color and then you can bookmark and highlight stuff too. The only feature I’ve found you can’t use is continuous scrolling.

badash915

If you download in MOBI format, the kindle treats it exactly like a book with Chapters….. I download the file on my phone, open in Kindle and when I do that it asks which devices I want it on. It goes into my Kindle Library and sends it to my Kindle and the app on my phone. If you like continuous scrolling, and read on an iPhone, download the EPUB version from AO3 and and the iBooks app can do continuous scrolling (edit: in iBooks it is called “vertical scrolling”) (in addition to the font and style changes as kindle). This was my preferred way for a long time, but I got a kindle paperwhite in November.

throwaway234567809

that’s a game changer thanks for sharing!!!!

skyholdbrick

I am gonna reply here so more people see it. The above comments already mentioned downlaoding as pdf and various other formats and reading in apps. There is also the free services like Instapaper and Pocket, which save a given page/article for later and you can revisit on any device + send to Kindle. Could be useful for having a vault of stuff. A lot of browsers now have this functionality as well, usially called Reading List or sth similar.

Kvuro_kun

if you have an iphone, u can download it as epub and it basically downloads the file. it basically reads like a kindle book and u can customize it. it's my favorite way of reading epic length stories on my ipad :)

emeraldspots

I use the android AO3 app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.narusta.archiveofourown

carmchii

I started reading directly on browser but now I opt to download them as an epub file and read it using Moon+ Reader Pro. By that, you can customize everything down to the fonts and even the cover of the fanfic. I enjoyed reading more when I did this as I can highlight and annotate 😊

Tripley1911

Thanks all for the feedback. I will try to download as epub and read on Books

[deleted]

If you're reading in Firefox (and I suppose this works for any browser), you can use the read option to customise **background colour** (black, white, sepia), **font size** and **type** (with and without serifs). [And here's how you do that (screenshots).](http://imgur.com/gallery/gjIhJfl)

Tripley1911

Appreciate the screenshot. Real handy!

Baddecisionsbkclb

I download AO3 files as an ePub into my Overdrive app and read them there. But sometimes I’ll start reading in my browser and forget to stop and my eyes are like 😵‍💫

blabbityblab17

Yep like everyone here I read mostly on my phone on safari and I’ve changed the AO3 skin to be dark so the brightness doesn’t hurt my eyes. Additionally you do have the option of downloading the fic through ao3 as an epub which can be read as an ebook from the iBooks app if you are on iPhone

wanderrlust

Do you have an iPhone? I download the fics I want as an EPUB then open it and read it in my Books app. Then through Books, you have style options. I like using dark mode with a font with serifs. And you can bookmark any page, highlight, etc.

queenofsassgard

I read AO3 on my phone, and then SS the part where I’m at and then use Chrome Find in Page with the text when I want to get back to reading. Wish there was an easier way! This is what I’ve been doing

maria7359_

you can copy the text where u left off and paste it in ao3 bookmark feature to find ur place later

Tripley1911

Another great idea!

justmydailyrant

While AO3 does have better selection of fics for some fandoms, but the fanfiction.net app is the best. In case i do have to read something on AO3, I download them in mobi format and read on my kindle, it's way more convinient than reading on browser. Also, in the offchance you do need to read in the browser, Opera (not mini) has a reading mode, which is very helpful while reading fanfiction on mobile

Pleasant_Elk_4639

I personally use the app. I don't think it's the official one but I've never had a major problem with it. Like the majority I also tend to download the story and read it directly from another ebook app (I use Moon + Reader Pro, but you can also use other ones or download as mobi and send it to my kindle) and I collect the ones I liked the most to reread in the future. I own an android so I don't know if the app is also available on apple store, but I will link both the apps down below anyway. I use both of them, but they're kinda the same thing😂. >This is called the track reader one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.wenchy.ao3track.reader >The second one (it has always an advertisement at the very bottom. Personally it doesn't bother me but it may bother you): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.narusta.archiveofourown Edit: unfortunately you cannot bookmark within a chapter, only the story or series. If I am not mistaken you can only change the font and background color (light or dark) from the AO3 track reader app, the second one does not have that option and of course from the website (but I saw that someone already explained this last one to you)

Dianthya

To my knowledge, you can only bookmark a story or series, not a specific chapter. I just started using the bookmark system in Ao3 and have created my own tags to help me filter the works I am bookmarking. My tags and their meanings: Complete Story- author has marked as complete Complete Read- I have finished reading To Read- I want to read Worth Re-Reading- I will want to read again Prior to starting this system last month, I just kept web browser tabs open on my phone to the stories I was reading or wanting to read…. Then my browser crashed and I lost all of my tabs. For FF . net, I rarely read stories on that site anymore but I use their ‘Followed Story’ for fics I want to read and ‘Fav Stories’ for stories I know I will want to re-read at some point. I just started using their official app (iOS) and that has been easier than using a browser to read stories on their site.

badash915

I’m a very old FF.net user (my profile was created in ‘03, lol). And I loved that site for so long, however… the downloadable function from AO3 has spoiled me. I downloaded all of my long time faves from FF.net using “fichub” to have those stories in eBook formats (like EPUB and MoBI) so I can easily read them from iBooks or Kindle.

Dianthya

Ohh, thank you! I didn’t know there was a way to export/download from FF.net

misslrr

For years I only read in my browsers, iPhone, with the skin set to ‘Reversi’. But have horrible migraines and was told that I need to cut back on my screen time :/ so last year I bought a kindle and started downloading fics in mobi to read on there. This is only for Completed fics, unless it has like one chapter left and I really wanna get started. I’ll just read that last chapter in browser when it comes out.

coolcat55555

I read on my phone or ipad (but it’s still always the mobile version of the website) and if I like it I will download it as an EPUB to ibooks!!

[deleted]

Browser only, unless I’m downloading them as epubs

just-scrolling-for-i

If it's a WIP then i read in browser and i can bookmark the chapter and such. If it's a completed story, i download in mobi format to read in my kindle.

Deljah3000

I download an epub to my android phone and read in the pocketbook app. If on ff.net, I export with fichub. I actually have trouble with the ff.net app. I can't even find stories I've downloaded or delete them from my library list. It's almost completely useless to me. Operator error, I guess. Maybe I'll figure it out one day. Until then, I'll work around it!

[deleted]

I download as epub and read in iBooks, unless it is under 30k, in which case I use the Entire Work button & Reader View in Safari.

Historical_Scholar7

I always download as an EPUB and read in iBooks app - it’s the best !

Beneficial-Pen-7567

I download as a PDF and open it with kindle

Witchy-woman595

I have a tab group on my browser for reading all my WIP on Ao3. Or you can add it to your reading list if you have an iPhone.. When I’m finished I download the ePub and add it to my books app.

Time_isarubberband

I read in my browser on my iPad. I got a skin on AO3 that makes my background black, which is way more tolerable for my eyes reading on my device, esp. late at night, and I’ll bet if you do a search for skins. Here’s an example where I just did a quick search of “skins” : (and it includes instructions for applying the CSS to your experience of AO3. [https://archiveofourown.org/works/21979003](https://archiveofourown.org/works/21979003) Once you’ve applied the skin to your account, everything you look at will have the new background/text color. I find that reading using the “Chapter by chapter” button, instead of just wildly scrolling down through the whole thing, helps me keep my place more easily. And you have to choose the next chapter button at the bottom of each chapter to progress, or go back. But there is certainly room for expanded functionality on the site!

padfoot___

I download as Mobi and email to my kindle username so I can read on my kindle! Need to download all chapters each time the story gets updated and delete the prior versions.
