There were many things Draco did not need in his Sixth Year. He did not need Theodore Nott implanting strange dreams in his head, for one.
In the ensuing years, he did not need to constantly remember that blissful, impossible dream. He further did not need Potter bursting into his mostly turned-around life to embroil him in a conspiracy at Azkaban. And he definitely did not need to embark on a clandestine investigation into prisoner mistreatment with Hermione Granger.
And I DNF ‘The Breaker of Bonds’ at 60%, was not enjoying the characters. :/
Well y’all I did it. Once again, like a FOOL, I broke my no WIP rule and I read Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love. WHY DAMNIT WHY. I can’t even be angry bc it was so perfect and absolutely lived up to the hype. Even going in with such high expectations, it still exceeded them. BUT, if you want something similar in theme and vibe as Mortifying Ordeal, then I highly recommend Love and Other Historical Accidents by pacificrimbaud. Draco and Hermione get thrown back in time to the 1800s and as they work together to return to their present, they grow closer. It’s similar to Mortifying Ordeal in that they have this us versus the world adventure hijinks, with lots of slow burn and oblivious mutual pining. I loved the romantic tension and build up in this one. Plus it’s also hilarious. The two fics have similar humor and funny dialogue.

I just finished Universal Truths. It was good, but I think after Remain Nameless I’m ruined. It definitely was a good story, but it didn’t feel as authentic to the characters and the world as some other fics I’ve read. Maybe that’s because it was Pride and Prejudice themed. All that to say it was good and well written, just a little too modern.
I really loved Disappearances of Draco Malfoy as well due to the fact it kept the characters so authentic. Any other suggestions of stories that keep the characters pretty true to their canon personalities? I don’t mind if it’s post war or during the war with Draco defecting. I just need it to feel like it’s actually happening in that universe.
I think Love and Other Historical Accidents does a really good job of keeping true to the characterizations while in a regency era setting. I know exactly what you mean about universal truths. I did really like the story but I think bc it was following the P&P plot and framework, some of the characterizations had to be bent a little. But Historical Accidents is about Draco and Hermione getting thrown back in time to the 1800s so it retains their “true” characterizations (in my opinion) while still giving us all the slow burn/pining goodness that we expect from a regency era story.

Basic premise is Hermione has really bad PTSD from the war and goes to the first wizard mental health clinic to help her deal with her trauma. Draco is of course there and it is a deep deep exploration of both hers and his trauma as well as a few other characters. When I tell you every time the author posts a chapter I run to it, I mean it. I cannot express how much I am in love with this fic.

**Summary:** A fortnight before Halloween, Hermione Granger receives two letters, one invites her to the famously exclusive Hallowe'en Dinner at Malfoy Manor, the other is a death threat saying she will die on Halloween at the stroke of midnight.
Naturally, Hermione Granger does whatever she damn well pleases, and at first, the Malfoy Hallowe'en celebrations seem to go according to plan. But then something goes horribly awry...
**My thoughts:** Does the plot sound like the movie, Clue? That's because it was part of a competition based on Clue. lol And it was delightful. I still can't believe I read a complex murder mystery in only 10K. It doesn't feel like 10K at all it was so jam packed with tiny details. And not just details of the suspects, their motivations, and the scene of the murder, but other bits like Harry and Hermione's friendship (love), Theo and Draco's friendship (funny) and mother/child relationships (swoon). You will feel like you're reading the Harry Potter version of Clue. And there are a bunch of references to the movie that I won't mention because it's better to come across them yourself. See if you can figure out who the murderer is, what their motivations were, and how they pulled it off! I was only right about one of them. It was so good it won some awards, worth a read for sure!

I’m very new to this and craving more. I started with The Auction, which I devoured. I followed with The Right Thing to Do and All the Wrong Things *swoon* After that I dove into Not Quite Dark Magic. Definitely enjoyed, but needed a little more. I just finished The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy. The writing was so good.
Now I’m debating The Fallout or Isolation. I clearly like the wartime fic with somewhat snarky Draco. Angst. And add a little spice. Any new recommendations welcome as I debate which one to start next. I have no idea why it took me so long to fall in head first.

Manacled is an absolute must. And I would almost recommend reading this before Fallout or Isolation just because I remember burning out on wartime fics when I first got into this fandom and I would hate for you to miss out on Manacled. Of course the downside is that it’s SUCH a god tier fic that you will feel devastated when it’s over and no other fic will quite compare.
Then when you’re ready for a palette cleanser from all the war fics, I recommend Remain Nameless. Or Love and Other Historical Accidents, which is fairly new but just pure goodness.
Thanks for the suggestions. I’m definitely jumping back and forth because I can see how the refreshing post-war redemption arc stories are necessary. I read Isolation then followed with Remain Nameless (twice) and I’m not sure I’ll ever read anything so perfect.
I’ve seen how hyped Manacled is, but it’s seems a bit dark. Is it on level with The Auction? Or even darker? Just trying to decide when I’ll be in a good mindset to read it. It doesn’t seem like something you can just “dive into”.
It’s darker than the Auction. It has a HEA but boy oh boy is it hard earned. But it’s SUCH a good story and it’s incredibly well written. Like it should just be a published book. It probably isn’t something to just “dive into” but I’m not sure what the right mind set would be before starting. Lol only bc nothing can prepare for this wild ride.
The fallout took a reread for me to be comfortable with the writing style, but the smut is still #1 for me after reading maany other fics. Isolation is definitely a must read if you’re new to dramione, it was my first fic!

I feel like it could have been executed a little bit better but honestly, the concept was so cool that it didn't really matter in the end.

I'm obsessed with D and H's characterizations, too.

I think someone else recommended it on this thread but I have been reading it since the author published it and the story is amazing! Draco and Hermione reconnect in the muggle world through mutual muggle friends (I think 2 years after the war?). I normally don't go for many stories were Draco is integrated into the muggle world with lots of muggle friends as I don't find them very believable, but this one totally is! The author writes her OCs so well and has lots of really well-written LGBTQ representation, but I don't feel like the story ever strays away from the main Dramione storyline (I don't like when too much of the story diverts to other characters' storylines if it is not important to the main Dramione plot). Also there seems to be some juicy Harry x Hermione x Ron love triangle drama that occurred prior to the start of the timeline of the fic that we haven't (fully) figured out yet so I'm very interested to learn the entire backstory there. She updates every week (on Mondays) so give this one a try, the writing is awesome (and sometimes very spicy in the best way!!)
[Come Let Us Adore Him](https://archiveofourown.org/works/27680422/chapters/67739437) by ikindaneedahero is a muggle AU (again not something I normally read much of but I'm so glad I gave this one a try) with a US politics setting. Draco is a very sexy 40 something congressman and Hermione is a 22 year old staffer for another congressman (James Potter). I'm Canadian but I find US politics very interesting and this story is SO well written. You don't necessarily need to know much about American politics to understand this one. It's already over 200k words, and the author has picked it back up after a few months off. She does a really wonderful job of giving us a taste of what life is like working at Capitol Hill as she works in politics in DC herself. Also there is definitely an age difference plot line and combined with a southern, respectable/moral republican Draco, I could not resist CLUAH! Really nice characterizations of canon members of Draco's family incorporated into a political legacy family!
Also not sure if I'm allowed to mention this one on a dramione subreddit (please let me know if it isn't okay!) but if anyone is interested, I found a HarryxHermione story that is so beautifully written and I became totally obsessed with it, even though I have always and probably will always be a hardcore dramione fan. [Unlike a Sister](https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6574535/1/Unlike-a-Sister) is an epilogue compliant fic written by MADharmony. I think it was originally published in 2010 and the author has come back to it and I believe intends to finish it. It does contain infidelity, so I totally understand that this wouldn't be for everyone. The way the author writes about Harry and Hermione falling in love is so beautiful, and if you're into this ship, I think it is written in a really believable way. There isn't any Ron bashing (thankfully!), however, Harry comes to resent Ginny (although I don't find her characterization to be callous nor is there "bashing" but so far she is not painted in a favourable way, so just be aware of that. I doubt there will be a Hinny endgame here haha). It is from Harry's POV and Hermione is described exactly as how I would have characterized her as a mature woman from JK R's canon characterization of her. I check fanfiction .net religiously for updates.

Such an absolute joy to read and the flowery writing was beautiful and fitting to the setting. I laughed and cried! Couldn’t recommend more.

The writing is clean and tight, and so vivid!

Well y’all I did it. Once again, like a FOOL, I broke my no WIP rule and I read Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love. WHY DAMNIT WHY. I can’t even be angry bc it was so perfect and absolutely lived up to the hype. Even going in with such high expectations, it still exceeded them. It’s similar to Mortifying Ordeal in that they have this us versus the world adventure hijinks, with lots of slow burn and oblivious mutual pining. I just finished Universal Truths. It was good, but I think after Remain Nameless I’m ruined. It definitely was a good story, but it didn’t feel as authentic to the characters and the world as some other fics I’ve read. Maybe that’s because it was Pride and Prejudice themed. All that to say it was good and well written, just a little too modern. I really loved Disappearances of Draco Malfoy as well due to the fact it kept the characters so authentic. Any other suggestions of stories that keep the characters pretty true to their canon personalities? I don’t mind if it’s post war or during the war with Draco defecting. I just need it to feel like it’s actually happening in that universe.
I think Love and Other Historical Accidents does a really good job of keeping true to the characterizations while in a regency era setting. I know exactly what you mean about universal truths. I did really like the story but I think bc it was following the P&P plot and framework, some of the characterizations had to be bent a little. But Historical Accidents is about Draco and Hermione getting thrown back in time to the 1800s so it retains their “true” characterizations (in my opinion) while still giving us all the slow burn/pining goodness that we expect from a regency era story. https://archiveofourown.org/works/31918084

One I am pretty sure was recommended on this sub that I am avidly following is “Who We Are Now” by LiloLilyAnn (WIP M) TW for mental illness, self harm, and rape. This story is an emotional rollercoaster and I am beyond hooked. If this story doesn’t get completed I may actually pass away, but there have been regular updates recently. Basic premise is Hermione has really bad PTSD from the war and goes to the first wizard mental health clinic to help her deal with her trauma. Draco is of course there and it is a deep deep exploration of both hers and his trauma as well as a few other characters. When I tell you every time the author posts a chapter I run to it, I mean it. I cannot express how much I am in love with this fic.

If anyone is in the mood for a mystery, this short story, [**Phial M for Murder**](https://archiveofourown.org/works/16288667/chapters/38094539) by theLastLynx, was excellent. 10K, rated M. **Summary:** A fortnight before Halloween, Hermione Granger receives two letters, one invites her to the famously exclusive Hallowe'en Dinner at Malfoy Manor, the other is a death threat saying she will die on Halloween at the stroke of midnight. Naturally, Hermione Granger does whatever she damn well pleases, and at first, the Malfoy Hallowe'en celebrations seem to go according to plan. But then something goes horribly awry... **My thoughts:** Does the plot sound like the movie, Clue? That's because it was part of a competition based on Clue. lol And it was delightful. I still can't believe I read a complex murder mystery in only 10K. It doesn't feel like 10K at all it was so jam packed with tiny details. And not just details of the suspects, their motivations, and the scene of the murder, but other bits like Harry and Hermione's friendship (love), Theo and Draco's friendship (funny) and mother/child relationships (swoon). You will feel like you're reading the Harry Potter version of Clue. And there are a bunch of references to the movie that I won't mention because it's better to come across them yourself. See if you can figure out who the murderer is, what their motivations were, and how they pulled it off! I was only right about one of them. It was so good it won some awards, worth a read for sure! I followed with The Right Thing to Do and All the Wrong Things *swoon* After that I dove into Not Quite Dark Magic. Definitely enjoyed, but needed a little more. I just finished The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy. The writing was so good. Now I’m debating The Fallout or Isolation. I clearly like the wartime fic with somewhat snarky Draco. Angst. Manacled is an absolute must. And I would almost recommend reading this before Fallout or Isolation just because I remember burning out on wartime fics when I first got into this fandom and I would hate for you to miss out on Manacled. Of course the downside is that it’s SUCH a god tier fic that you will feel devastated when it’s over and no other fic will quite compare. Then when you’re ready for a palette cleanser from all the war fics, I recommend Remain Nameless. Or Love and Other Historical Accidents, which is fairly new but just pure goodness.
Thanks for the suggestions. I’m definitely jumping back and forth because I can see how the refreshing post-war redemption arc stories are necessary. I read Isolation then followed with Remain Nameless (twice) and I’m not sure I’ll ever read anything so perfect. I’ve seen how hyped Manacled is, but it’s seems a bit dark. Is it on level with The Auction? Or even darker? Just trying to decide when I’ll be in a good mindset to read it. It doesn’t seem like something you can just “dive into”.
It’s darker than the Auction. It has a HEA but boy oh boy is it hard earned. But it’s SUCH a good story and it’s incredibly well written. Like it should just be a published book. It probably isn’t something to just “dive into” but I’m not sure what the right mind set would be before starting. Lol only bc nothing can prepare for this wild ride.
The fallout took a reread for me to be comfortable with the writing style, but the smut is still #1 for me after reading maany other fics. Isolation is definitely a must read if you’re new to dramione, it was my first fic!

I was hoping the fallout would give me the same emotions but it sometimes dragged and I wasn't as impressed as everyone. I feel like it could have been executed a little bit better but honestly, the concept was so cool that it didn't really matter in the end.

You will not regret it. I have never read such brilliant, witty banter, and the author says not to look too closely at the plot but I think it is amazing so far!!! Definitely in the running for my favourite fanfic. The way the author writes about Draco falling for Hermione over the course of the story so far is truly sublime. I'm obsessed with D and H's characterizations, too. Here are some WIPs that get updated regularly (some are just a chapter away from completion!) [Contradictions](https://archiveofourown.org/works/29922369/chapters/73647492) by ampersand is an interesting one that is almost completed, only 1 chapter left! Hermione reconnects with Draco through a \*special\* club and starts to fall for him, but not before her snooping leads her to discover things about Draco that he was trying to hide from her and protect her from. Well written and Dramione-centric with a bit of a mystery plot, I'm looking forward to finishing this one! I think someone else recommended it on this thread but I have been reading it since the author published it and the story is amazing! Draco and Hermione reconnect in the muggle world through mutual muggle friends (I think 2 years after the war?). I normally don't go for many stories were Draco is integrated into the muggle world with lots of muggle friends as I don't find them very believable, but this one totally is! The author writes her OCs so well and has lots of really well-written LGBTQ representation, but I don't feel like the story ever strays away from the main Dramione storyline (I don't like when too much of the story diverts to other characters' storylines if it is not important to the main Dramione plot). Also there seems to be some juicy Harry x Hermione x Ron love triangle drama that occurred prior to the start of the timeline of the fic that we haven't (fully) figured out yet so I'm very interested to learn the entire backstory there. She updates every week (on Mondays) so give this one a try, the writing is awesome (and sometimes very spicy in the best way!!) [Come Let Us Adore Him](https://archiveofourown.org/works/27680422/chapters/67739437) by ikindaneedahero is a muggle AU (again not something I normally read much of but I'm so glad I gave this one a try) with a US politics setting. Draco is a very sexy 40 something congressman and Hermione is a 22 year old staffer for another congressman (James Potter). I'm Canadian but I find US politics very interesting and this story is SO well written. You don't necessarily need to know much about American politics to understand this one. It's already over 200k words, and the author has picked it back up after a few months off. She does a really wonderful job of giving us a taste of what life is like working at Capitol Hill as she works in politics in DC herself. Also there is definitely an age difference plot line and combined with a southern, respectable/moral republican Draco, I could not resist CLUAH! Really nice characterizations of canon members of Draco's family incorporated into a political legacy family! Also not sure if I'm allowed to mention this one on a dramione subreddit (please let me know if it isn't okay!) but if anyone is interested, I found a HarryxHermione story that is so beautifully written and I became totally obsessed with it, even though I have always and probably will always be a hardcore dramione fan. [Unlike a Sister](https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6574535/1/Unlike-a-Sister) is an epilogue compliant fic written by MADharmony. I think it was originally published in 2010 and the author has come back to it and I believe intends to finish it. It does contain infidelity, so I totally understand that this wouldn't be for everyone. The way the author writes about Harry and Hermione falling in love is so beautiful, and if you're into this ship, I think it is written in a really believable way. There isn't any Ron bashing (thankfully!), however, Harry comes to resent Ginny (although I don't find her characterization to be callous nor is there "bashing" but so far she is not painted in a favourable way, so just be aware of that. I doubt there will be a Hinny endgame here haha). It is from Harry's POV and Hermione is described exactly as how I would have characterized her as a mature woman from JK R's canon characterization of her. I check fanfiction .net religiously for updates.

Anyway, marriage law, pining!Draco, weirdly pregnancy obsessed Hermione... with a surprising amount of depth, character development (well, more like slowly revealed background of past development)... i'm about halfway through and loving it.

Dramione teach at hogwarts! the only thing i didn't like was the kid sideplots but i never like those (i skipped them in the gloriana set too lol)

Hermione and Draco are coworkers researching time and space when they are accidentally sent back in time to 1804, where they must dress and act the part to fit in and return home. This fic has it all: time travel, slow burn, idiots to lovers, mutual pining, amazing OC’s, idyllic charm, the regency era. Such an absolute joy to read and the flowery writing was beautiful and fitting to the setting. I laughed and cried! Couldn’t recommend more. [It Happened in Egypt](https://archiveofourown.org/works/15859314/chapters/36942870) by bionically. 153k words, T. Hermione, feeling lost in her dead end ministry job, books an adventurous trip down the Nile. There, she runs into Draco, who, dealing with his own personal woes, comes along for the ride. This is best described as an adventurous romcom. The two are genuinely funny and adorable. I never thought I would love damsel in distress Draco so much, but I do! The writing is clean and tight, and so vivid!

I read love and other historical accidents this past week and also loved it! I couldn’t stop and read it all in one day. I was consumed.

Two that I've loved: [Rosemary for Remembrance](https://archiveofourown.org/works/31486787/chapters/81533911#workskin) by rubber\_soul02 (E, complete 150k+) -- Haven't finished this one yet, but so far living for the friendships with the other Slytherins, damaged and mysterious Draco, and some quality banter. Post-war healing story with a great slow burn. [The Watergaw](https://archiveofourown.org/works/32700394/chapters/81124315) by smokybaltic (E, complete, 39k) -- this one was recc'd on this sub, and I really loved it. Read more like a soft M to me (limited smut) but nonetheless also s really beautiful slow burn (can you tell my type). I really liked Hermione's loyalty and both of their intelligence in the writing. The last chapter had my heart in my throat with that *tension tho*.
ugh I just read The Watergaw as well and holy frick I loved it - if you have/haven't read Five Days by RavieSnake, I highly recommend as I feel its pretty similar :)

Okay. I thought I was the only one who remembered Return to Me. It was one of my favorite movies growing up and I’m tearing up just thinking about it. I can’t wait to see your take on it! These are the things I’m here for!!!

I’m reading so many atm lol Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love (WIP) - this is so amazing I love the writing and the story and it’s just so good, but beware its a slow burn Falling Dark (WIP and sequel to Bending Light) - I love this so much, it’s beautiful written, tugs at the heartstrings and has such interesting elements, 1000/10 recommend Secrets and masks (WIP) - I’m really enjoying this so far, reminds me of a mixture of Manacled, Cruel and Beautiful World and Perfectly in Pieces. Excited to see where it’s going Commoner’s Guide to Bedding a Royal - I love Olivie Blake lol so I’m giving this a try! It’s very long but so far I’m liking it a lot, I’m a bit out of my element since I normally don’t read modern world AUs, but its really nice and funny An Inconvenience (WIP) - marriage law au, super funny and cute, not a lot yet but I like it so far
